Three years ago today, in a climate-controlled vault sealed with three feet of concrete, located somewhere in the vicinity of the Jefferson Memorial and the Golden Gate Bridge and accessible only by helicopter and bungee rope, I began Jihad Watch. I hoped to raise general awareness of the nature of the jihad ideology, the activities of jihadists around the world, and the ways in which both of these were being obscured by academic apologists and the mainstream media.
It has been a tumultuous three years. The site has grown considerably, such that we now average over 30,000 unique visitors daily, and about 600,000 to a million hits each day. ("Hits," as far as I understand it, refers to files viewed. If you look at the front page, it's a hit. If you open an article, it's a hit. If you go back to the front page and open up another article, that's two more hits. Hits also multiply if picture files are involved. There are about 20 to 30, or more, hits per person. Some have charged that by noting that we receive about 30 million hits per month, we are claiming 30 million different visitors. That is not in fact the case.)
Largely, I believe, because this site has captured attention, I have spoken about the jihad ideology on the BBC, the VOA, numerous other radio and television outlets, and to audiences all over this country, as well as in Europe and Israel. I've spoken at a workshop sponsored by the U.S. State Department and the German Foreign Ministry, given presentations to U.S. Central Command and to a Joint Terrorism Task Force group, and also addressed influential fora that I am not at liberty to name. I've given information on jihadist activity to media outlets on which (or in which, as the case may be) I've never appeared personally, including ABC News, the Washington Post, and the O'Reilly Factor. And I've written two books that made the New York Times Bestseller List. All this is personally gratifying, but it is all much more important as an indication that, increasingly, word is getting out. The truth is getting out.
Much of this I attribute to this site. Hugh Fitzgerald and I, with immense help from Marisol Seibold and others over the last three years, have endeavored to present the facts, no matter how politically incorrect and uncomfortable those facts may be. Although there is the expected drumbeat of calumnies and falsehoods about what we stand for and what we are doing, we have also seen that many people of good will have come to respect this site as a trustworthy and reliable source of information and commentary. We offer rational analysis, while those who tell others to slit the throats of their children lecture us about spreading "hate."
Of course, the fog of misinformation and propaganda still blankets the West and largely strangles public discourse about the nature of the jihad threat and what can be done about it. And for that reason, Year Four of The Jihad Watch Era hereby begins.

This is an extraordinary time in American history – nothing quite like it has come before. As a 30-year analyst of events in the Middle East, I am convinced that the U.S. and her allies face a hazardous global crisis.

Robert, Hugh and Marisol thanks for the great and courageous work. This site has changed history. Its given people access to accurate and unbiased reporting on current and past events and a PC free discussion of Islam.
When one thinks of how important that is, and what else exists with that opportunity, one realizes the importance of what you've done.
After 9-11, we all should have studied what's been on your site at libraries, etc, but most of us didn't. At some point along the way, the readers and occaisonal bloggers have had some event jar them to an awakening that what we were told by President Bush after 9-11 can't be the whole story.
For many of us, the Danish cartoons was a critical event that jarred us to question what we were being told. Obviously, we shouldn't have waited that long. This site was here for those who needed a place for honest answers after the Danish cartoons.
The reaction to Franklin Graham's comments after 9-11 was that he was the criminal. Jihadwatch now fills a void that obviously existed after 9-11.
Service men give their lives or limbs in Afghanistan or Iraq. We may see them on TV or trying to reintegrate into local life with a mechanical arm or leg.
The fight you make is just as important, and also is essential if their sacrifice has meaning. The meaning of their sacrifice has to be more than just a politician's need, but for the West to survive. Many politicians, sadly, will let soldiers be wounded or maimed, but without it resulting in the West surviving.
Keep up the good fight and look at how far the discussion has come since 9-11. It may seem at times that its still a part of society that sees the truth and speaks the truth. But information is nonlinear. One day its arrived and almost everyone knows it. But penetration picks up towards the end.
So the progress you have made has to be seen almost on a log scale. You are more than half way there towards the public's awakening to what needs to be done to preserve the West.

I think one of the best aspects of JW is that it's professional and respectable, not just because of it's content and the way it's designed, but because the person running it has some credentials. Of course, this doesn't stop certain people from denouncing JW as a hate speech site or a "biased" right-wing nuthouse.

RESPONSE: I faced such similar dismissal all through the 90s. At parties and family gatherings, the minute I'd bring up Islam, eyes would role and folks would walk off to refresh their drinks.
After 9-11, things changed. Suddenly family and friends were more deferential and began asking all the right questions. But that only lasted awhile.
I was incredulous when I heard my brother - whom I love dearly - say about six months ago that "something really bad has to happen to wake people up."
What the fuck was 9-11?

Despite the serious and often depressing nature of the material, Spencer's humor (oh dear, should that be humour?) and of the contributors to this site often have given me to fits of laughter requiring the replacement of at least one keyboard. I hope this site continues, and I hope you will never be short of articles to put, or never short of comments to write because it shows that Muslims all over the world will no longer go under the oppression that the US and the west is putting them under, they will no longer bow down to the wishes of the arrogants, they will no longer sit and watch, and be massacred. This site shows that Islam is reviving, it is returning, and Muslims are awakening from their slumber. By this I do not mean Al Qaeda, or other such wahabi groups which are proxies of the US, and who carry out the dirty work of the US to provide scape goats for US offensives on Muslims, I mean the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hezbollah, Mahdi army and other such groups and nations who are fighting back.
We will not submit to the will of the US or Israel. We will not let America or Israel steal the wealth of our nations, and we will not allow them to rule the Islamic Ummah, and to place puppets and dictators to quell and defeat Islam.
The US is failing, and it will fail in the middle east and in regards to Israel. Just as Hezbollah defeated Israel, just as Iraq is defeating the occupying army, just as through the relentless jihad of Hamas and Islamic Jihad Israel was defeated in Gaza, the US will fail in its policies in the middle east, and it will face serious repurcussions for them.
Al Qaeda, september 11th, and many other so called terrorist attacks across the world are orchestrated and funded by the US government. The US is constantly seeking for reasons to attack Islam, and they will stop at nothing to provide justifications for their attacks. Imam Khomeini (ra) was right to lable US as the Great Satan, because now when you look at it, you can see that in almost every corner of the world they are stirring hate and violence. They are atacking countries, killing innocent people on a daily basis, and their is no end to thier hypocrisy. When Saddam's dictatorship was favourable to them, they supported it, when Osama Bin Laden was fighting the soviets, they supported him and gave him money and weapons, when the tyrants of oil rich nations give them money (such as Saudi Arabia)they support them.
America is the mother of all terrorists, they seek to rule the world through domination and fear. Just look at the members on this site. You are all terrified by the concept of jihad, and Islam, but you never stop and think to see what your own government is doing to this world, and that maybe, just maybe, the reason why those 'jihadis' in Iran are calling for Death to America is because of what the American government has done to them. The stealing of Iran's wealth during the shah era, making Iran industrial in the 'white revolution' so that Iran would be dependant on US food imports, placing sanctions on Iran after the revolution, blocking vital aeroplane spare parts sales to Iran which has caused the death of thousands of innocent Iranians.
The crimes of the US government are endless, and finally the Islamic Ummah is waking up to them. We will not be oppressed, and nor will we oppress. This is our motto, and we are striving towards it and one day we will reach it with the retun of our Imam Mahdi (aj).

Thank you Robert. JW/DW is a great place for honest debate about Jihad. Many of the posters here give excellent contributions to the understanding of this ongoing threat to the western world. I myself have woken up to the menace, not only because of the articles here on JW/DW, but also to a large extent inspired by other peopel, often in faraway countries, who share my concern. F.ex. peopel such as many of those who post here regularly.
Keep fighting. You're not alone. I found out that I wasn't alone after coming to this place and I'm sure that many other peopel here feel the same way.

Jesus Christ Supercop... the funny thing about that is I used to work for an Israeli software company with offices here in the United States... I noticed alot of middle managers or project managers from Israel who didn't involve themselves directly in the projects... at first I thought they were lazy or something, but, hmmmm? We also had a cadre of road warriors who'd come and go for weeks at a time... HMMMMMMM
Now are customers were mainly the Baby Bells, some wireless companies and the like. We had maybe 6 primary clients and maybe 6 or 7 secondaries.... why did we need to 'sell' them like we did.
I began to think our software development center could be used as a cooling off place for various agents.... just for fun.
Then about a year after I left the company I saw a news report that members of the company had been implicated in wiretapping the white house and other places. So they had been watching me probably.... who knows? I used to snoop around on the network for fun. We all had to take a psycological profile & intelligence test as a condition of employment. I went out to try and find it on the network and noticed it was all wide-open... I did find my boss' evaluation on one of the HR pcs... but I began to wonder.. are they watching to see who's snooping around?
One never knows. Reality is a long, strange trip brutha.

I find myself checking your site 2-3 times a day. All of us who are now tuned in to pay attention to this would really lose if you JW wasn't there. I wonder if you yourself had any idea 3 years that Jihad/terror is going on in as many places everyday as we actually see.
You have gained the great honor of being called out recently by the threats of the terrorists -- this shows that they really don't enjoy operating in the light of day--and also that you are a man among men--I can't tell you how much I respect you for the balanced way you do the site.
You even give our enemies the opportunity to respond on the site--that in itself shows so much: We see the bankruptcy/twistedness of their warped minds--and we see that TRUTH speaks for itself--all their distortions vs. the facts that are written and docutmented for record and the whole world to see.
JW will see continue to see multiplicative type growth in unique visitors because many of us are turning others on to JW everyday. We never lack for current examples of what the jihadis are doing

I have been with you since the beginning of your site. I have always tried to look at what I have learned about Islam objectively as possible over the past three years to try and make sure that I do not mislead myself, as well as others that I have shared my gathering knowledge with.
Time and time again I continue to see behaviors in the Islamic world that reflect so obviously clear the teachings found in the surahs', and the hadiths of Islam.
Also noting the Islamist JihadJihad11 from his or her comments shown above how such incredible ignorance flows through the fields of their propaganda.
Truly this is a clash of civilizations!
May your knowledge and this website continue to open the eyes of not only infidels but also Moderate Muslims who take the time to look at the big picture in a more peaceful way as well.

Thank you Robert for your hard work please keep it up and know you have a growing number of people from all nations who have as Samual Jackson said in Pulp Fiction, their eyes now "wide #$@#$ open" thanks to you. I am still reading the Qur'an and the hadiths I can honestly say that this should be required reading for any socalled Chamberlin like head in the sand types out there.
We are in a War --not just my beloved friends in America (I love you guys) but every other freedom loving country based on democratic ideals. Europe, Canada and the others who will wake up slowly --the old Allies who fought because they had too in WWII, reluctant warriors who did it bravely and to the last ounce of power in them.
The Islam threat is real as we all know. And as Robert Spencer has said in the past once a country gets a certain number of people who follow Islam then they agitate to take over or separate. Its happening right now in the mostly catholic country of the Philipines where OIC Islam groups have called for a autonomous muslim govt in the South --"just because" there are so many muslims there now.
I believe we WILL win this war though tough times might be ahead... As Winston Churchil said "DESERVE victory!"

We owe a debt of thanks to Robert, Hugh and everybody connected with this website. This website has really increased my knowledge and awareness of Islam and it's retards.
A lot of the facts I have picked up have been from people's comments so the success of the website has been partly to the quality of the information contained in the comments people have passed. I consider myself to still be in the beginning to learn about Islam stage so doubt if I have contributed anything of much value. It has to be said this website and everybody who contribute to it are doing a great job. Long may it and it's contributors continue.

AQ has recently ordered their minions to ramp up a campaign targeting inet chat rooms, that’s what they think JW is, a chat room. Notice the recent increase in jihazi posters we have had lately? I have listened to talk radio for decades and I have been heartened (over the past year) as the anti-jihad crescendo builds, day by day we get stronger. Entire 3 hour shows are now being dedicated to AJ topics. The people are not stupid, they can see what is happening and they do not like it. I once said that Roberts’s reputation would continue to grow, while the msm would sink deeper into the abyss of moral/intellectual irrelevance. The truth makes the enemy go berserk, but they do that over cartoons or upon seeing a tiny patch of women’s skin exposed. Keep poking and prodding, it is having the desired effect. Great job everyone.

hi, just want to say this is a great site! I get most of my news from here. now when i read/listen/watch MSM i can't stomach the lies they spew out. I try to spread the good news, which is jihad watch, to all my friends and colleagues. However, it is difficult to convince them since most of them are left leaning bleeding hearts. But after a year and a half on harping on the subject i feel a few of them are coming to realize the truth!!!

Thanks for all you do Robert, Hugh, and the JW/DW staff. I've learned a great deal here and at one point several years ago you confirmed that my interpretations of Osama Bin Laden's messages were not crackpot theories and bigotry. All I did was read what he had to say and compare it to the available Islamic texts online. But that changed my entire worldview and perceptions of what "religion" could mean. Nothing I read in the media came anywhere near what I'd concluded.
I'd like to thank Islam for giving me a first-hand view of the medieval mindset. I studied it in college and never thought I'd see it in real life.
But don't take "medieval" as meaning weak. Islam is a powerful, pragmatic way of maniupulating human nature for combat, subjugation of the "other," and conquest of territory. As a spiritual religion Islam is weak, but as military strategy and means of conquest it's very strong. Islam has proven Milgram's 37% true, in spades.

With any luck at all, Robert's and Hugh's work will reach those many Muslims who are ignorant of their own scriptures and the Sunnah. If they go off the reservation and manage to look at it dispassionately (if possible)it will open their eyes. In that moment they will truly make a decision to turn away or to "fight in the way of Allah."
We live in times when people are going to have to make critical decisions about where their loyalties lie.

On this anniversary for Jihad Watch, the question arises from other websites , "does Robert Spencer go to far?"
They worry that the well-intentioned moderate muslims are getting pushed out of the way, and have no room to operate because of Spencer's website. Its a fair question, and an important one.
Please take a moment to consider: If there was a fire, the firemen yell and push people out of the way. Do they go too far? Not at all. And if some 'helpful' people with squirt guns were thinking that their trivial squirts were putting out the inferno, the firemen would not thank them, but would push them out of the way too. This would seem rude to the gathering crowd, who would like to imagine that any well-intentioned person is qualified to fight the fire merely by having good intentions.
More than anything i wish it were true that the well-intentioned people could prevail. The problem is that we have been well-intentioned now for some time.(I will humbly admit that well-intentioned Muslims have existed for an even longer time) Has this helped? Isnt the fire worse now than it was before? Or will you only become serious about it when its your own house that is burning?
If anyone steps up who understands the seriousness of the blaze, and has a serious approach to fighting it, the fireman readily acknowledges a fellow fire fighter.(whether atheist, Muslim, Jew, Christian, etc)
But the well-intentioned crowd is cluttering up the scene and they are unintentionally aiding the fire's spread.(whether athiest, Muslim, Jew, Christian, etc)
The fireman has to push them back. They are offended at the fireman's seeming rudeness, they are angry at not having enough room to 'help'.
If Robert Spencer seems rude to you, remember it is the same rudeness that firemen have at an inferno. If he doesnt give you room to operate, its because the inferno is laughing at your little squirt gun and by standing there you are preventing the firemen from bringing the hose up.
I will keep reading Jihad Watch and I encourage you, my friends, to do the same. Its time for everyone to be well-informed instead of merely well-intentioned.

Today really is MY birthday. October 28th is also the feast of St. Jude Thaddeus, patron saint of hopeless causes. It certainly can appear that the Islamic problem is a hopeless cause, and without Robert, Hugh, and Jihad Watch it possibly would be one, so it is certainly fitting, if fortuitous, that JW is coincident with the celebration of the saint of desperate cases, whose amazing appeal cuts across denominational lines.
This "community of hate," as the detractors have it, is anything but. I've been here long enough to know that even the most vitriolic posters wish there were no need for this site, so I must disagree with those who wish JW many more birthdays to come. Wish me many more birthdays if you want; wish many more to Robert and Hugh, our heroes; wish more for all of us in this community of hate.
But it is not a hopeless cause we fight, and I for one am hoping that Jihad Watch ceases to exist because there is no longer any need for it.
I'm betting Robert and Hugh feel the same way, and I'm sure they have other things they wish they could do with their lives and their time.

THe web has become the recluse of the anitjihadist as well as the jihadist. The truth shines brightly from JW/DW and this is hurting the deviates who are trying to obscure it. I wish you all the perseverance and determination required in your endeavours to uncover and highlight this evil abomination threatening the freedom of all good people. 9/11 displayed the unspeakably perverse depths to which they will sink. Every time I see the Twin Towers going down I curse them with all my heart. The angry response to the Danish cartoons and the Pope stirred my indignation and made me realise that something dark and dangerous was happening. Far too many people who should know, don't know, or even care about this problem and that is troubling. The deadly intent of this devilish excuse for a religion must be exposed for what it is and combated at all costs. The struggle against jihad must prevail.

I had been growing increasingly disturbed by radical Islam for years, but like so many, it was 9/11 that really woke me up. I set out to learn as much as i could about this hateful creed. I discovered JW about a year and a half, maybe two years ago.
Often I read articles here that take days or weeks longer to hit the MSM (if at all). Your analysis is almost always clear and enlightening. I admire the way you let the atrocities speak for themselves in most cases--they often don't need any editorializing. Although this site is often accused of promoting wild-eyed hate, nothing could be further from the truth. It is almost always reasoned and low-key, especially considering its frequently horrifying subject matter.
This is a lesser point, but I also like Robert's dry sense of humor, which is much needed.
I might not have sought out the writings of Oriana Fallaci, Melanie Phillips, Fjordman, Bat Ye'or, or many others if I had not first heard about them on this site. The same is true of other sites such as Faithfreedom, Gatesof Vienna, WesternResistance and many others. The amount of information here is staggering.
Knowledge is the most important first step if we are to successfully fight the Jihad, and I don't think there is a better site than JW.
This is often the first site i check out in the morning. You have educated a huge number of people, and I can only hope you reach more and more people as time goes on.

Banning Doublejihad is not the answer, let him rant and rave to his heart's content. He is obviously deranged, a typical specimen of the muslim male. I'm sure he's very sincere and believes every ridiculous statement he made; islam causes insanity.
I can't believe it's been three years! I still feel like 9-11 happened just yesterday, not five years ago. It is still so vivid in my mind and I will never forget being paralyzed in front of the television, unable to move. It took five years for me to wean myself from cable news because I was afraid if I turned it off, something horrible would happen again and I wouldn't hear about it. I have not watched anything on television for the last five years but continuous news. When I worked in my garden, I turned on the outside speakers. If I wasn't near a television, I listened to Fox News on satellite radio in my car. I'm sick of the news.
Although I have been well acquainted with islam and related subjects for many years, I never dreamed it would become a primary focus in my life, literally a life and death issue. I never thought I would become almost addicted to a website dedicated to islamic jihad, but now I cannot imagine how I would cope without it.
Maybe we'll all see the day when JihadWatch is no longer needed. Somebody will figure out a way to slip Prozac or LSD into the food of all the islamic clerics in world, and they will start preaching love and brotherhood instead of hate and jihad. The jihadists will all blow themselves up before they reach their targets, and the next generation of muslims will be secular.

Yeah, gotta agree, this is a great site for information. Wow I found out about those Aussie 'jihadis' in Yemen, may they rest in peace in jail, which hadn't hit the Aussie news.
Believe we have got to make more people aware of what is going on.
But I've started trying to understand what is happening, so over on one of my blogs took up a discussion with myself. I'm leaning towards an axis of evil so to speak that we are up against -
- the radical extremist Islamists
- Orientalism's effect on Western Universities humanities departments
- 'Whiteness Studies' (probably linked to Orientalism) in our humanities departments.
Seems we are teaching our youth to hate themselves, at the very least be very very confused, so while our current social policy engineers are building the foundations of us lying down and dying, they are ensuring the next generation will continue the process.
Is this being covered anywhere as part of our problem with radical Islam?

Congrats on the 3rd anniversity of Jihad Watch. I have learned so much on this site. I enjoy reading all the comments and sometimes it takes several hours to read all the articles and comments but I AM ADDICTED and come here everyday. I try to catch all your tv appearances and am frustrasted by the short time that you have and would love to see a Jihad Watch program on a news channel. Keep on keeping on, I will continue to spread the news, WAKE UP AMERICA!

Congratulations and thank you for being a good teacher. I still hope that one day I will be able to find in my country some of your books in an ordinary bookstore, instead of being forced to order them from Amazon.
Your views are not yet mainstream, but they are becoming more and more popular within the ordinary population that is not blind like the politicians that sold their alliegence to Eurabia long ago.
Congratulations to Hugh as well. "Douce France" is still my favorite of his articles.

Last night I was with several business associates, who I count as friends, at one of their homes for some R&R. We discussed all sorts of issues and laughed and had a good time. When the subject came around to Islamic terrorism and Islamic influence in America, the party really got started. It was heartening to hear their concerns and their intelligent thoughts about what we all have been contemplating, namely, that Islam is making inroads into our society and it is bent on taking it over. I was able to tell my friends stories about everyday, normal atrocities that occur in Islamic countries, now in Europe and even in the US. I was able to direct them to this site and they all took down the information eagerly.
Thank you Robert, for your website that is a beacon of light in a dark, dark world.

Thanks to the integrity of your approach to argument, and to your presenting of the facts from Islamic sources, you have established a site which has well-deserved credibility to which we can point people. Likewise with your books, which I love giving out.

I have used the daily info on this fabulous site, the very first one I check every day, to reach out to so many others about the truth of islam. Through this site, Mr. Spencers books and other recommended readings and 9/11 I sometimes amaze myself at just how much I did not know before.
