The UN admits that it is completely ineffectual, or worse. "UN Admits Syria Arming Hizbullah, UNIFIL Takes Nights Off," by Ezra HaLevi for Israel National News, with thanks to A Girl Scout:
Despite the 20,000 troops deployed in southern Lebanon, the United Nations admits that weapons smuggling from Syria continues unhindered. A German report finds UNIFIL does not patrol after dark.Hizbullah terrorists are free to roam at night without fear of being identified by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to a report by the German paper Der Spiegel.
UNIFIL commanders were interviewed by the paper, saying their function is to "observe changes in the behavior of the local population," with Spanish UNIFIL official Richard Ortax admitting that no patrols are carried out at night “because of the danger involved.”
One junior officer told Der Spiegel he was glad that his battalion only left their camp once. "It's absurd," he said. "We landed here and set up our tent city, but since then we've only left the camp to drive around and to make sure that we're seen."
The report cites a long tradition of UNIFIL inaction, which it says allowed time for a Finnish contingent to construct a giant sauna and an Indian contingent to decorate its base with tradition Indian artwork.

It has long been established that the UN has been hijacked by Islamic distators and is now a well-respected jihadist enabling institution.
None of this should surprise us. The only surprise should come when the sane countries decide to stop paying UN dues (and maybe bomb Syria and Venezuela).

I can't help but agree here, I will only be surprised if the UN actually did its job.
We pay a lot of money for this league of terror that only seems to support dictators and food for oil scandals.

This is the another step in what will be a growing trend. Five billion people in the world have personal income levels lower than the average person in Mexico. And when organizations like the UN allow popular votes, the result will always be for income redistribution and things that weaken the powers that be. Between the excesses of the West, and natural human instinct of envy, these trends will continue. Islam is taking advantage of situation. Israel is paying the price today. We all are, actually.
The UN needs to be re-located to Lebanon or Venezuela. A new organization of freedom-loving democracies need to be set up in its place. The sooner the better.

If the UN is not going to keep up it's part of the bargain, then there is no reason for Israel to. Why the hell is Israel not resuming it's bombing of these hezbo positions, that are being rebuilt and rearmed?

I'm astounded that the UN could or would let this happen. After all UNIFIL is being headed up by the French.
Sarcasm off.
What a crock.

Probably we should Vote Republican so we can keep John Bolton in front of the UN.
BTW, have you seen the picture of the military guys in Iraq with their message to John Kerry. It's pretty good. Some of the politicans need to be taken down a notch.
God willing, of course.

StillFedUp: Are you 100% sure Kofi ISN'T a Muslim? If not, then he's done a helluva job abdicating whatever it was he belonged to and providing international support for the Islamic cause. (It is NOT possible to believe, for example, that the man could be a Christian... now that's for SURE!!).
In short, Kofi couldn't have done more for the jihadists of the world if he HAD been a Muslim...

Limes: As long as any international organization includes Islamic dictatorships, corrupt Third World regimes (that never lived up to ANY religious ethical codes), Communist-bloc nations, or any other ideological states (like the EU) there is no hope for democracy. But there is hope--we just have to start all over.
I recently faxed a missive to the White House (the lady at the Comment Line was enthused about my idea) to share my idea: the United States could look into the possibility of retooling the Commonwealth and bringing it into the twenty-first century as a means of defending democracy against Islam, Communist China, selling out by the EU and other threats it faces.
In my view, a new commonwealth of democratic nations could be an antidote to the nightmare scenario facing the democracies that Mark Steyn has laid before us. Democracy is facing unprecedented threats. Americans are going to have use their inventive talents to the max to find a way out of this.
An anglosphere has been suggested by international relations experts for a long time and has gotten nowhere. But it occurred to me, as Granny Weatherwax (she no longer posts on this site, alas) once mentioned on this thread that the Commonwealth once fulfilled this (although the United States was never included in it, possibly by its own choice). However, the Commmonwealth may have left us a key to surviving the present decline of democracy worldwide and the rise of barbaric ideological states (like Venezuela). That key is a democratic political infrastructure. Whether or not the parliamentary system is approved of by Americans at this blog is less important than the fact that the parliamentary system of government is both DEMOCRATIC and sane--two qualities that are in short supply indeed in much of the developing world (and it could be retooled anyway). Japan and India could be added to an anglosphere-twenty-first century commonwealth of democratic nations (Americans would probably need to relinquish at least some of their hard power, but that may prove to be a disguised blessing: defenders of democracy might be more willing to shoulder more of the burdens of defending democracy, so Americans wouldn't automatically be forced to carry the majority of wartime casualties). And in anglosphere, those pesky French and Germansand continental Europeans wouldn't be invited in anyway (their commmitment to democracy is too weak anyway for them to qualify).
No more UN! May the anglosphere of twenty-first century democratic nations rise in its place.

UN serves ONE purpose in S. Lebanon. They are a convenient 'dhimmi shield' - just as good as if not better than a woman and children shield.
I just had a good marketing idea: sell live baby vests for brave Hezbollah terrorists to wear.

UNIFIL official ... admitting that no patrols are carried out at night “because of the danger involved.”
Scaredy cats.
UNIFIL commanders ... saying their function is to "observe changes in the behavior of the local population"
You mean like when the local Moslem population flips that secret switch in their backs from Inactive Moslem to Active Moslem.
Betcha the "observe the local population mission" cop out was not what Condi and the EU elites were telling Olmert before Israel stupidly agreed to the pullout.
The only question left unanswered now is, did the Indians decorate the Finnish saunas, or just the tents and the rec center?

I AM AMAZED THAT SO MANY OF US WOULD BE AMAZED AT THIS.
I am amazed that anyone that knows anything about the UN really expected it to be different this time than any other time. Perhaps the most amazing thing is that these incompetent morons are ADMITTING for the record that they are ignoring half of the basic premise for being there. (Oh and incidentally--Israel gets screwed again while their enemies gain from another international sellout).
The Israelies may have an advantage in the end over every other country--THEY HAVE BEEN SHAFTED SO MANY TIMES THAT THEY KNOW BETTER THAN TO DEPEND ON THE USA OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THEIR SECURITY. They KNOW that they can't depend on other countries to cover their back, so I am sure to them it just another sellout.
I am sure the Israelies knew this would happen I look for them to do some serious house cleaning in the region in the near future. OH BOY, I can hardly wait.

Yes BB-
This is OUR sellout the U.S. via Condi pushed for this and I am ashamed, ashamed, ashamed of my country who acts as though this travesty is 'normal'.

Pythagoras; Here here. But my vote is for some sort of criteria that could be set to make the screen for front-line players less cultural and more on a per capita income and some kind of a freedom index. A second tier of Countries that embrace freedom but have lower per capita incomes should also be welcomed but with some limits on voting rights. The Polands, Romanias, and Belizes of the world all have similar interests to the ‘West’ and can contribute.
In any case, we should be looking for an excuse to stop giving the UN credibility by way of our presence. It is working against our own interests.
at November 1, 2006 9:07 PM
Yet another example of why UN stands for Useless Nations.
By the way, would anyone be shocked if the UN not only lets this smuggling go on but probably has a finger in this pie as well? Someone's probably raking in the bribes to let this happen.
Once the shooting starts up again it sure would be awful if Israel "accidently" hits a few UN positions. Thing is, I might feel a little sorry-the UN forces probably face Israel and since the Islamaniacs excel at attacking from behind they're liable to shoot these UN guys in the back-accidently or otherwise. One thing will be certain-Syria will laugh itself silly at all this.

And so, when this conflagration starts up again, (and you're crazy if you think it won't); and Condi tells the Israelies to stop just as they start to win; the Israelies should tell her what?
"Yes Condi! Thank our lucky stars that the UN is here to save us! Okay everybody, we can all go home now -- UNIFIL is here!"
Just why is YOUR tax money going to the UN?
John Birch was right and correct; "get US out of the UN."

Well, if the UN is arming Hizbullah; I suppose the US government should get into the act also, right?
Between Bush's IQ and Kerry's -- we're screwed but more so is Israel!

Well, well, can't say I'm surprised. Afterall, it is very likely that the UN will be one of the instruments al-Mahdi will use in the future to bring about an invasion of Israel. Ahmadinejad, Assad, Hamas, all want Israel to disappear from the world map.

Pythagoras and Limes
Good ideas, both. Here in NZ politicians have been scoffing at the old commonwealth concept and telling business to cuddle up to Asia/Pacific, since that is closer. There is some point there, and regarding countries with the right 'freedom index' as Limes put it, I'd be willing to consider it.

So, UNIFIL has returned to its role of protecting Hizbollah and later acting as human shields whenever Hizbollah decides its time kill some Israelis. The next time, I hope that Israel does not give advance warning before they attack an area. Please, Israel, just bomb it to the ground but make sure to secure that area with ground troops afterwards.

I just finished viewing the DVD Islam, What the West Needs to Know. We should be sending this DVD to everybody we know, as well as our senators and representatives. It is an extremely powerful presentation, perhaps more powerful than any book could be. It shows Robert Spencer speaking very directly about Islam. Also shows Walid Shoebat, the PLO terrorist who converted to Christianity, and Serge Trifkovic, author of Sword of the Prophet, and Bat Ye'or, famous for her works on Eurabia and the history of dhimmitude. Interspersed throughout this DVD's 98 minutes is fascinating TV and news footage from the Arab world, and also of American presidents and government officials. Toward the end of the DVD, there is some horrifying 2002 footage of an Iraqi Muslim cleric threatening America, preaching decapitation of Jews, and unsheathing a scimitar. The cleric yells in a bizarre mesmeric voice of frenzy reminiscent of Hitler's hypnotically furious harangues. In response, a frenzied crowd of Muslims chant Allahu Akbar. And this DVD contains other shocking footage from the Arab world. You won't believe it. Folks, you gotta get this DVD and spread it around.
I can't recommend it enough. But because people naturally associate DVDs with effortless fun and entertainment, I here add a caveat -- this is not effortless infotainment. A significant portion of it consists of camera shots of one or another expert talking about Islam, and if that doesn't appeal to you, this DVD might not be for you, despite the fact that it's leavened by news footage and many interesting visuals, and moves pretty well.
It's divided into six parts, and quite packed with essential information, so you might need to watch half and then take a break before going on.
Subtitles written in the main European languages should be added to this DVD so non-English-speaking Europeans can easily absorb it.

One more thing: the "shocking" footage I mentioned does not show any violence. There is a scene of an American or Western military vehicle being blown up as a jihadi chants Allahu Akbar and films the explosion. But the exploding vehicle is sufficiently distant that no human beings can be seen getting blown up. This DVD is suitable for anyone to watch.
