PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) - A suicide bomber killed at least 42 soldiers at an army base in northwest Pakistan, in what appears to be a revenge attack for a missile strike against an Al-Qaeda training camp, officials said.
Witnesses said the huge explosion at Dargai in North West Frontier Province sowed panic, and left body parts and shredded clothing scattered across a parade ground where trainee soldiers had gathered for morning assembly.
"Forty-two recruits died in the attack and others are hospitalized, some are in critical condition," military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told AFP.
The spokesman condemned the bombing, the deadliest since the Pakistan army was deployed in the tribal region about five years ago to hunt down Al-Qaeda militants.
He described it a terrorist attack and warned the death toll could rise. Other security officials said 20 people were wounded.
Sultan said the investigations were ongoing, but the attack appeared to be an act by militants whose training school was destroyed by the military raid at in Bajaur last week.
"We strongly suspect the attack on the army center was done by the people trained in Bajaur in the madrassa run by Al-Qaeda facilitators Maulvi Liaqat and Maulvi Faqir," Sultan said.
Suspicion has fallen on Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Mohammadi (TNSM), a group which has widespread presence in the area and is known for its links to Afghanistan's Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
Both Faqir and Liaqat, who was among 80 militants killed in the airstrike, were members of TNSM group President Pervez Musharraf banned in January 2002 for sending some 10,000 armed tribesmen into Afghanistan to fight the US-led invasion.
Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said the attack was a suicide bombing and vowed there would be no let up in the anti-terror hunt launched by the key US ally, Pakistan.
An interior ministry official said the bomber targetted recruits on a parade ground next to the regiment's main training center.
"The bomber was clad in a shawl and he blew himself up in the middle of the assembly causing large scale casualties," the official told AFP.
Hidayatullah Khan, who saw the explosion from his newspaper stall just a few hundred metres (yards) from the parade ground, described the grisly aftermath.
"Human limbs, army caps and shoes were scattered all around the blood-splashed ground," he said.
A local official said the military cordoned off the area around the base and put up barricades to prevent people leaving or entering the tribal district, some 160 kilometres (100 miles) northwest of the capital Islamabad.
He said investigators have found a torso which appeared to be that of the bomber and were examining it.
The area had until now not been touched by the fighting between Al-Qaeda-backed militants and the Pakistani military, but it is only 80 kilometres southeast of Bajaur.

Hours after the bombing an unknown caller claimed that Pakistani Taliban carried out Wednesday's suicide attack.
The man, who refused to give his name in a telephone call to a prominent journalist Rahimullah Yousafzai of local daily The News, vowed that he would himself be the next suicide bomber.
The caller said the attack was launched by Pakistani Taliban, identifying the group's leader as Abu Kalim Mohammad Ansari, Yousafzai told AFP.

At least, it would have given the Indian Nation something to be proud of in a long, long time, in place of rancid appeasement.
Now watch Islamic jihad engulf Islamic jihad, as was foretold in the beginning! This is a cleansing of Muslim souls that they have ardently prayed for. Time to change the name of Hindu Kush. What ideology will the jihadis use to protect themselves against jihad?
My only prayer is that the NATO forces, the Western nations, and the US especially, don't rush in to rescue the jihadis being victimised by the jihadis!
And the rats, scurrying to the sinking ship of jihad, will sink together. No right-minded person would invite them to reconvert! And I also pray that the Left goes down with them in eternal embrace of cowards who thought they would take over the earth by terrorising the defenceless, the women and the children.
The first sign will be the drying out of funding sources. And this battle will have been won for the free world by the Americans, once again. (Provided the Left hand knows not what the Right hand does, and is not permitted to circumvent it in the midst of it all).
We need to keep vigilant, but I think now that it has begun in earnest, it will be over sooner than expected. Better them than us.

Hoist, more or less, by their own I.S.I.-created petard. For the Taliban were raised and cultivated as a deadly crop in madrasas for Afghanis inside Pakistan. The Pakistani military then sent them back into Afghanistan, with its every good wish and a good deal more, and no country, not even Saudi Arabia, was more eager to have the Taliban win, and more instrumental in its coming to power and setting up its monstrous regime, and extending not only diplomatic recognition (Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the U.A.E. were the only countries to do so), but to help it in so many other ways, including the supply of war materiel.

Well Mushy Raff, what do you think of your erstwhile pals now? Once the Taliban decides you're no longer useful you're a goner. Should have snashed them like the stupid Americans told you instead of sucking up to them. Now you're receiving some gratitude, Islam style.
Note to JW fans-everytime something like this happens in Pakistan we get a little closer to the end of the most famous of the trolls on this site. Better get your licks in when that troll appears because the Taliban are not likely to allow too many computers, especially to the "meat", covered or otherwise.

Absolutely, pagandkapitat. However, the plaintively miaowing madmoron PM of India in tandem with communists would be ready to supply all "healing touches and aid". Might even fly our flag at half mast;) all for "peace process". God forsaken, sanctimonious, priggish, *estranged brother(sic) bug* bitten zombie India, always finger pointing at the West for its own slothful inaction...let us see what it does.

The Taliban are the Creation of Pakistan & Pakistani Intelligence agency ISI.
Talib means Religious and baan means student
So if Religious students are so cruel so what to say about the normal students?
If a Christian is a religious student then he becomes a Priest or an Evangelical Pastor:)
If a Jew is a religious student then he becomes a Rabbi or whatever:)
If a Hindu is a religious student then he becomes a Yogi or Sanyasi:)

It is very sad to see Pak Jawans needlessly scythed down like this...I was choked.
You see it was military Jawans who rescued my trapped Anwer from the Earthquake in Pak. They have a special place im my heart.
Thay also protect us from Zia terrible invention...the Taliban. The Amerike/British are doing a good job in Afgan keeping their numbers down!

what Naseem you are now glad that the West are in Afganistan to keep the numbers down? of what numbers down. you have a whole lot of killers right in your pakistan! do you mind if the US /Brits.. and there are Cdns there.. are blondes? do you appreciate blondes that keep the numbers down? But the Taliban are majority Pxxxxxxxi (thanks Crow&Cows) recruits! So Musharraf is not doing such a good job in keeping their numbers down in Pakistan in the first place!

Blown up into body parts like the Kufr with a Brother using their own Ammo too, shouting Allah-O-Akbar. At that rate, there's gonna be a shortage of 72+28 in Jannat, the Shahid streaming in from both sides. 'Twould be enough to choke any believer! Mo's not gonna be able to enjoy too many cartoons if he's kept busy interceding for all his flock / pack at one go!!!
