Israeli deputy defense minister: Strike on Iran possible

Unfortunately, a government spokeswoman was quick to note that Sneh's comments "did not necessarily reflect the view of Israel's government or of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert." Perhaps with more minds like that of Ephraim Sneh in the Israeli government, Iran would not be so sure that its enemies would not do a "damn thing" to stop its nuclear program. "Israel official: Strike on Iran possible," by Amy Teibel for The Associated Press:

JERUSALEM - The deputy defense minister suggested Friday that Israel might be forced to launch a military strike against Iran's disputed nuclear program — the clearest statement yet of such a possibility from a high-ranking official.
"I am not advocating an Israeli pre-emptive military action against Iran and I am aware of its possible repercussions," Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh, a former general, said in comments published Friday in The Jerusalem Post. "I consider it a last resort. But even the last resort is sometimes the only resort."
Sneh's comments did not necessarily reflect the view of Israel's government or of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said government spokeswoman Miri Eisin.
Olmert, who was arriving in Washington on Sunday, said he was confident in the U.S. handling of the international standoff over Iran's nuclear program. The Bush administration and other nations say is a cover for developing atomic weapons, but Tehran says the program is peaceful.
"I have enormous respect for President Bush. He is absolutely committed," Olmert said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. "I know that America will not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons because this is a danger to the whole Western world."
[...]
Israel crippled Iraq's atomic program 25 years ago with an airstrike on its unfinished nuclear reactor. Experts say Iran has learned from Iraq's mistakes, scattering its nuclear facilities and building some underground.
Sneh's tough talk is the boldest to date by a high-ranking Israeli official. Olmert and other Israeli leaders frequently discuss the Iranian threat in grave terms, but stop short of threatening military action.

Too bad someone had to make this statement. Time was when Israel would just go and do what needed to be done-no blabbing necessary.

I'm delighted that Olmert places so much faith in Bush. Not.

I can only hope Olmert comes to a decision before an Iranian nuke arrives in Hezbollah hands through Syrian smugglers.

Isn't it amazing-after Demonizing Israel for fighting for its survival among millions of Jihardists sworn to its destruction-cowardly E.U,America,Britain are secretly hoping this tiny nation will administer the coup de grace to
Iran's nuclear ambitions!Difference is the Jews know what it is to FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL-we'd better learn the same IN A HURRY...

Morgane, I for one believe the United States will soon enough be in it's own fight for survival. With the left in control it's just a matter of time.

government spokeswoman Miri Eisin should shut up, in fact I wish all of the rhetoric would stop and they would just start taking action. The U.S. should just ship a few of the huge bunker-busters that they weren't allowed to test in the desert of Nevada descreetly to Israel and a nice little mission should take place without my ever knowing about it UNTIL it is accomplished. Then President Bush can make a "Mission Accomplished" speech and I'll cheer all the way to CostCo to store up for the coming retaliation strikes. That is a shopping trip I will enjoy!
Less talk more action and I'll shut up now too!

In order for Israel to survive it really has no option but to strike at Iran... again. To get a good understanding why, perhaps you should read - Moshe Dayan: Story of my Life. Historical but a really good read imo. Try finding it in your local library, amazon will ask a nifty price for 2nd hand if you can find it there.

Israel says, "Strike on Iran possible"

POSSIBLE?

How about IMMINENT!!

I doubt a pre-emptive strike is forthcoming with Olmert in Office. However, a strike WILL happen if Olmert is voted out of office, as he should be for his failed war with Lebanon and Hizbullah.

Olmert will be ousted for a right winger who understands the Islamist threat. The only eight winger who can bring victory to Israel, Ben Netanyahu.

Iran and Lebanon would be nothing more than smoking craters if Netanyahu were in office. Let's hope he returns in time to save them.

And of course, do not count in the UN, UK or USA to stop Iranian ambitions. It didn't work on the DPRK.

The Russians are so smug in helping the iranians with their nuclear technology. It is only a matter of time when the iranians sell a nuke to the chechynians. Pay back is hell, Russia!

Israel doing this is about our best hope of it happening.

I asked this in another forum- for those who know more about Sharone than I do- how do you think he would be handling all this in Israel today? How do you think he would have responded to the kidnapping of his soldiers? Would he have caved in to U.N demands? Or waged all out war against Lebanon? Just curious- I didn't really follow Sharone's policies before- so don't really know how he would have responded- I think he would have shown strength, but don't know.

Israel has promised that they would not be the first to detonate nukes in the region, but they have armed them once before in 1973 Yom/Kippur war that they thought they were going to lose.
I would bet that their estimated 300+ warheads are already being prepared on their subs and launchers, aircraft in case. I think they have to use conventional wepaons to try and take out the facilities first. Iran is not going to just "allow" them to fly in, so I suspect that some advanced Cruise missiles would be the choice.

Either way the situation doesn't look good for Israel and no matter what it does the muslims are going to go "ballistic" so to speak. The US is in an equally unpleasant situation trying to keep a lid on things without losing face- a huge problem with the Islamists on the rise. They believe that Israel lost the war in Lebanon, and are now vulnerable, as well as the Iraq situation puts them in the drivers seat.

I just heard on FOXNEWS that Hamas has agreed to "talks" for peace with Israel. No doubt it will go as far as Oslo and then be pulled at the last minute like before.
(Personal opinion)
