Kidnapping of Americans Linked to al Sadr

Al-Sadr can wage jihad against the U.S. with impunity, since he knows a decisive strike against him is virtually inconceivable. And it also seems clear that Al-Sadr has friends among the new Iraqi police force. "Kidnapping of Americans Linked to al Sadr: Four Contractors Taken Prisoner When Convoy Was Ambushed, Military Officials Say," by Luis Martinez for ABCNews, with thanks to Twostellas:

WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2006 — A senior Defense Department official told ABC News that Shiite militiamen tied to anti-American cleric Moqtada al Sadr were behind the abduction of four American security contractors and an Austrian co-worker seized in a brazen attack on a supply convoy near the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

The search for the missing contractors resulted in a raid by coalition forces earlier today near the Kuwait border that resulted in the deaths of two Iraqi gunmen, but no hostages were found.

Throughout the day, statements from Iraqi officials — later discounted — led to reports that some of the hostages had been released or found dead. However, their employer, Crescent Security Group, said there had been no claim of responsibility, no demand for ransom and no communication of any kind from the hijackers.

Despite the confusion, new details emerged about the incident Thursday that took place 20 kilometers north of the Iraqi city of Safwan, located near the border with Kuwait.

A senior defense official said it was believed that the gunmen who ambushed the convoy were wearing newly issued Iraqi police uniforms that are supposed to be tightly controlled, hard to duplicate and were issued only last month.

Only a month ago, the coalition began distributing the digitally altered blue camouflage uniforms to National Police Brigades. The uniforms are also tied to the mass kidnapping earlier this week in Baghdad at the Education Ministry.

I was reflecting on why these people act the way they do in the name of their religion. The Japanese had their Kamikazes, but Kamikazes made sense as the approaching American forces threatened the mainland. Suicide planes were a logical last line of defense for patriotic young men.

But where is the logic in blowing yourself up at a fruit stand for Al Sadr?

The thought process must be at least partly genetic, and might be explained by looking at Muslim breeding. The rule of having four wives at once, and the ability to swap them out when they get tiresome (or no longer bear children) allows a relatively small number of males to influence the genetic makeup of the next generation. And in an authoritarian, male dominated society, the decision as to who will be awarded wives would have been made by religious leaders. The most obedient followers of Islamic teachings would have been the most efficient at passing on their genetic traits, including the propensity to sacrifice oneself for the faith. Which, after seventy or so generations in the shadow of the Qu’ran, explains why so many Muslims are willing to do acts like this for people like Mookie. They’re tribal.

Had al-Sadr been arrested for the death of the other rival religious leader early in the game when the arrest warrant was issued, things would no doubt be a lot different...the militia tied to him may not even have developed. Why on earth was he not taken into custody then?

The United States must take a much tougher stance towards Al Sadr and his militia or else more of this will occur again. Al Sadr is a major instigator and supporter of violence against Americans.

Al Sadr gets his strongest support from the poor and uneducated masses in Baghdad's slums. He is also popular in many circles of the Shia community throughout Iraq and Iran.

Unless the U.S. confronts Al Sadr with a strong arm, he will continue his bloodshed against Americans and take Iraq down the perilous path towards sharia.

eve_anne_gelical,

My thoughts on it are that the United States didn't want to kill a Cleric, who they thought would eventually settle down and get with the program... But, good news, lately the US Military has been conducting operations around his neighborhood, without notification of the Iraqi government... So, I suspect that the U.S. has put a price tag on his head...

Again, just my thoughts and analysis on it...

al Sadr has a cat's nine lives, sooner than later it will run out. the US made a huge mistake when they did not finish him off. one of the reasons this war is fast becoming a farce is the lack of leadership and williness to fight pc style.

Mookie is yer typical false prophet worshiping savage. He would have remained obscure except that his daddy was high ranking Shiite mullah. Who Saddam killed. We did in Saddam and of course the Shiites were ungrateful. The first President Bush had it right when he let Saddam have his way with them post war

... the gunmen who ambushed the convoy were wearing newly issued Iraqi police uniforms that are supposed to be tightly controlled, hard to duplicate and were issued only last month.

Ain't it a damned shame that the Arabs inhabiting those uniforms are uncontrollable, are all too easy to duplicate, and are issued by the tens of thousands each month.

Every additional story like this reveals the dual-faced nature of Muslims.

An iron fist approach is past due in Iraq.

Instead, we have a President that is talking about "moderation" in hopes of curbing the likes of Indonesian radicals and still not understanding that it doesn't take "radicals" in the world of Islam to eventually destroy the West -- all it takes is the perpetuation of Islam as an ideology across international boundries, its continued massive birthrate advantage and our own stupidity and pandering, to allow Islam to succeed in world domination.

We need an iron first approach all around.

Once more with feeling...'Bush should have won the war when he won it'...

How long must we continue trying this insane experiment of turning sows' ears into silk purses?
These people are not interested in building a nation or being peaceful. How hard is that to fathom?

The only way to effectively deal with a threat like al-Sadr is to find him and kill him. Destroy the place you found him in. Destroy the mosque he used as refuge. Destroy all and every fighter that wants to 'avenge' him. Destroy his propoganda network. Destroy every link to this blight you can identify with extreme prejudice.

"Unless the U.S. confronts Al Sadr with a strong arm, he will continue his bloodshed against Americans and take Iraq down the perilous path towards sharia."
-- from a posting above

Too late. And who cares? Let Moqtada al Sadr be forced to deal, without the Americans to do the fighting for the Shi'a, with those stout-hearted Sunni yeomen of Fallujah, Ramadi, and Tikrit.

That will be fun. That will make it pleasant, and not disturbing, to get up in the morning, and read the latest despatches from "Iraq."

The US has waited too long to deal with al-Sadr. And now it is too late. # years ago when al-Sadr had his assasins kill the cleric Khoui (or something like that) the US tried to arrest al-sadr but backed off. many other incidences since that killing have been attibuted to the al-sadr army with little or no follow up. when we had him trapped south of baghdad in the holy city?(ain't they all holy) of Najaf we simply shud have snuffed him and his group. we backed off, now it is too late.

Alarmed Pig Farmer, that is classic.

Sorry for going OT, but here is an AP story about a train-bombing in India that killed at least 5 people.

Of course, I don't know why I'm posting it at JihadWatch, since the article makes it clear that the "youths" that carried out this attack are "separatists", and their motivation is completely unrelated to the "I" word.

Funny how in every case ("Palestine", Thailand, Chechnya, Sudan, Indonesia, Kashmir, etc.) what they seem to really want to "separate" is the infidels' body from their head, whether by explosive or by knife.
