The nature of the incident is surprising. The utter contempt for Queen and country, and the sense of entitlement ("I am a Muslim, I am fasting, I needed to eat.") is not. "Muslim jailed for killing British queen's swan to break Ramadan fast," from AFP:
LONDON -- A Muslim man who was so hungry while fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that he killed a swan to eat was jailed for two months at a court in Britain Wednesday.
Shamsu Miah, 52, killed the mute swan at a boating pond in the north Welsh seaside resort of Llandudno September 25 - only the second day of fasting in Britain.
All mute swans in Britain belong to the sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II, an historical quirk dating from the twelfth century.
When challenged by police, Miah said: "I am a Muslim, I am fasting, I needed to eat."
Llandudno Magistrates Court heard that Miah had blood on his shirt and white feathers in his beard.
Prosecutor Jim Neary said: "When interviewed he said, 'I was hungry, I had to eat the swan so I killed it, I stabbed it. I did nothing wrong, it was just a bird, I needed to eat'."
"The officers told him the swan was the property of the queen and he replied, 'I hate the queen, I hate this country'."
Judge Andrew Shaw told Miah: "You killed a swan at night. It was a cruel and reprehensible act.
"I don't know how it died; there seems to be some speculation that you bit it but I accept you killed it with a knife.
"It is a taboo act and the only sentence I can pass is one of imprisonment."
Miah had pleaded guilty to intentionally killing a wild bird and possessing a bladed article.
He was released from custody having already served his two-month sentence while on remand.

This story is a candidate for this week's compilation of "News of the Weird." There is something here that doesn't make sense to me. If the guy was that hungry, why didn't he just go to McDonald's for a Happy Meal? What exactly compelled him to kill the swan? Maybe he thought the swan was an infidel.

There may not be a 7-11 on every corner in the UK, but it wouldn't have been too difficult for him to find a fish 'n chips joint; or a market; or a restaurant.

Explaining that "fasting entails not eating" might be a little harder ...
anyhow - aren't there "fast food" restaurants to cater for these tastes? don't they do "halal fast food" for people in a hurry and fasting?

this is too funny...in Llandudno (Wales) as well. When the police scanned the area for suspects, their eyes were inexplicably drawn to the wild eyed Muslim standing on the sea front with white feathers in his beard, and blood on his shirt.

I hope this little story doesn't bore anybody too much but it is a personal experience which just about sums up the mess New Labour has made of this country.
My neigbours are Brazillians, they are Baptists.
They invited us to a little party, where we met all their other Brazilian friends.
They all talked about how wonderfull this country is, how polite and fair everyone was, how well they were treated etc
They especially admired the public library service, the educational and business opportunities, infact everything about this country.
Anyway one of them leans over to me and asks me if I was a moslem (my parents are from India).
When I told him I wasn't his reply was "all they ever do is moan and say how much they hate this country, if they don't like it why don't they just leave"
And that just about sums up political correctness doesn't it ??

We invoke the UN charter re. Protection and Special Status of Indiginous peoples as guarnteed and put forth by the UN. Our governments are failing us so this may be the legal avenue we've been looking for.

I did a search and quickly found two other BBC news stories about the killing of swans - one by a Devon man, another an Aberdeen man. The point is, I think, that only the guy discussed here tried to justify his behaviour by saying 'I am a muslim, etc., etc.' As far as I am aware anyway most Muslims make perfectly sure they have ready access to a good meal as soon as the sun goes down during Ramadan. Incidentally, I am British and it widely believed that all swans in the UK are property of her Majesty. Apparently this is not so. Only some swans on some stretches of the Thames are. But all wild birds are protected by act of parliament.

Let's hope the swan had a few good bugs that it transmitted to him. It's been two months, but maybe the swan will have the last laugh, anyway.
Ramadan isn't holy enough to preclude him carrying a "bladed article"? What does that mean, anyway? Are people not allowed to carry sharp objects in Britain?
As for why the guy didn't head to a restaurant: it was late and he couldn't cash his welfare check. THAT was why he hated queen and country. They didn't make it easy for him to do as he pleased. And to top it off, they had the gall to hold him in jail because of his religion? Allah is not happy!!!

Anyone who's ever lived in the Middle East knows as Iftar approaches, the locals are so desperate to get home to eat that the roads turn into racetracks!
So his excuse that he was fasting and hungry at that time of night is almost certainly untrue. Yet, however implausible, he still offered it as an excuse, presumably expecting that the Islamic aspect would get him off the hook.
