TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday told delegates at an international conference questioning the Holocaust that Israel's days were numbered.Ahmadinejad, who has sparked international outcry by referring to the killing of six million Jews in World War Two as a "myth" and calling for Israel to be "wiped off the map", launched another verbal attack on the Jewish state.
"Thanks to people's wishes and God's will the trend for the existence of the Zionist regime is downwards and this is what God has promised and what all nations want," he said.
"Just as the Soviet Union was wiped out and today does not exist, so will the Zionist regime soon be wiped out," he added.
His words received warm applause from delegates at the Holocaust conference, who included ultra-Orthodox anti-Israel Jews and European and American writers who argue the Holocaust was either fabricated or exaggerated.
The Vatican, Germany and the European Commission added their voices on Tuesday to others -- such as the United States and Israel -- who have condemned the Tehran meeting.
Iran says it organized the conference to shed light on the reasons behind the formation of the state of Israel after World War Two and to allow researchers from countries where it is a crime to question the Holocaust to speak freely.
"Iran is your home and is the home of all freedom seekers of the world," Ahmadinejad said. "Here you can express your views and exchange opinions in a friendly, brotherly and free atmosphere."
"The home of all freedom seekers of the world." Yes, that's Iran to a T -- as long as you're not Jewish, Christian, Baha'i, or female. The Thug-In-Chief's statement here reminds me of the words of another notorious antisemite: you can have any color car you like, as long as it's black.

Increasingly brazen in his words and actions. Any thoughts as to the following characterizations:
(1) Something is scheduled to happen in the short-term to medium-term event horizon
(2) Iran already has a nuke so he doesn't care and in fact wants to provoke something
(3) Pure distraction in the course of buying time
(4) He enjoys seeing how far he can push before Western leaders push back
(5) The guy is insane
I guess what I am asking is, what is Iran's next big move? and when?
On a lesser note, I remember some reference to either WWII or the cold war where some mob-type said something to the extent of "hey, we are all Americans." To the extent that David Duke could actually disappoint low expectations, I would have hoped that as a racist, he would treat the Iranians with less respect than an American black. He wasn't even able to live up to being a consistent racist.

Good point Hugh. I feel so inclined. The US should state that it will support Israel militarily and otherwise in case of an attack. Just like, and more than NATO. It is clear that those who oppose Israel are (either knowingly or not) aiding and abetting the jihad. The tactics of modern jihad are practiced on Israel and then brought to the rest of the world (I almost made that common mistake of writing the west but we all know that the jihad is global even if the response to it is for the most part selfishly local and only when ones own interests are attacked. This is why your point is so important). Israel is on one of the major front lines in the war.
The supporters of Israel often have their motives scrutinized (such as the dual loyalty canard of Mearshimer and Walt). It is time to do the same to the attackers of Israel.

I suppose it is accurate to say that Carter is financially supported by bin Laden. Why would these guys be so interested in supporting the Carter Center? Carter's connections to this source of funging go back at least to his connections with his buddy Bert Lance. To be fair, it should be noted that former presidents since at least Ford have taken Arab money it buckets full. So have many other well known people (does the name Jim Baker ring a bell).
How about the hypocracy of Michael Moore making a huge point of the inuendo that Gerogge W. But, I think that hatred of Jews is too narrow a definition of the prime issue. Hatred of anyone or any group that is not in line with their cultish, Islamic religion seems, at least to me, to be the primary issue.

I do not agree that the president of Iran is insane. He knows that he can get away with his comments about the Holocaust because the West will do nothing. A bipartisan commission just advocated holding talks with this individual who participated in taking the American Embassy staff hostage for over a year. Iran should be isolated in every way possible.
If an airline flies to Iran they must lose landing rights in the US.Any nation that trades with Iran should lose all trade rights with the US. This includes EU, China, Russia or anyone else. If they buy Iran's oil, we buy nothing from them or sell them nothing.Any nation that has an embassy in Iran should have their diplomats expelled from the US. Give them a choice, have relations with Iran or the US. Not both.
We need to accept severe sacrifices, rationing and other hardships to defeat this enemy that is the heart and soul of the terrorists who are trying to destroy our country.

That's an excellent idea! It wouldn't matter where it's done, just as long as there's enough media there to let the Islamo-fascist folk know what's going on, and what we're saying.
Note that our response to the "holocaust hoax" balderdash is that of sensible people calling it "balderdash." Ahmadinejad's clownish antics are rather like those of a boy taunting other boys who are throwing stones at him when he is just out of range. He knows the Americans have their hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan and that cutting off Iran's oil exports would cause a world economic slow-down.
Putin may be a putz but anyone taking a close look at the way he's handled the Chechnyan situation will notice how many of the leaders and commanders in that war have been hunted down and assassinated by his secret service, even when they've withdrawn to live quietly abroad. That sort of thing has been recently legalised by the Russian assembly.In fact he's been getting quite blatant about it lately
Perhaps the US should take a leaf out of his book and change that law forbidding assassinations by the CIA. Nut-job would be my first candidate for the Polonium 210 Award of 2007.

While I find this denial offensive and against historical facts, and the speakers needing to be marginalized, not covered by the media, I do not think that those who speak such denials and claims should be in jail.
I can't believe I can agree with him (and Dukes) on anything, but in a free society with free speech, opinions spoken and thoughts expressed should not be cause for jail.

In addition to the various reasons I've seen guessed at so far in the media, Ahmadinejad might have others. For example:
1) Isn't it true that Ahmadinejad does not have the authority within the the Iranian legal system to launch missiles or mobilize armies? Could it be there is some resistance within the Iranian government to starting a war, and that Ahmadinejad, thus unable on his own to initiate war, is seeking to provoke a first attack on Iran by Israel or the U.S.? Perhaps Ahmadinejad thinks a preemptive attack on Iran would create within the Iranian ruling clique sufficient support for launching a nuke at Israel?
One might ask why, if the hypothesis is true that the ruling clique in Iran leans for now against war and prevents Ahmadinejad from mobilizing armies and launching missiles -- why then does the ruling clique not also stop Ahmadinejad's bellicose words? An answer might be that the Iranian government is little liked and supported by the Iranian populace, and that a significant part of the little support the government gets comes from those who support Ahmadinejad, who was elected. Yes, he was elected from an extremely narrow candidate slate dictatorially defined by the ruling clerics of Iran. But however little Ahmadinejad's support might be, it probably counts for a bit more than the unelected clerical rulers can count on from the populace. There could be another reason the ruling clique, even if it leans against war, is not removing Ahmadinejad despite his bellicosity: maybe the Iranian constitution doesn't quite give them the legal authority to remove him from office? Apparently Iran is not a one-man dictatorship. It's a religious oligarchy, and seems to be quasi law-based.
2) Could another reason he's repeatedly and publicly threatening to nuke Israel be to "soften up" the resistance in the world to nuking Israel? A kind of psy-ops-warfare to prepare the ground?
3) Could yet another reason for the repeated public announcements be that he is testing the international water to see what kind of reaction there is to his words, since that reaction might tell him a bit about what the world would do if Iran actually goes beyond talk and nukes Israel?
So far, the most plausible speculation I've heard is that he is seeking to provoke chaos on earth because he believes such chaos will bring back the Shite Muslim messiah, the twelfth (?) imam.

If the US preempts Iran militarily. There won't be much left of the Their Government to give the order to mobilize.
Iran would be pretty much rendered dysfunctional as a nation within about 30 days of non stop Aerial and Naval action.
We will suffer losses that the press will twist into losing, like they always do.

My money’s on the fact that he really, really hates the Jews and intends to nuke Israel. Because of the ribbing he must have taken in school, he probably enjoys mocking the ‘Great Satan’, which is why he does it repeatedly. It may be as simple as that.

Our dollar would be worthless. Gold would go to 3000 dollars an ounce overnight and silver to 100 an ounce.

We get 20% of our oil imports from Venezuela. If
Venezuela went 100% to Euro OR stopped Imports to U.S. the result would be the same as China.
Now if China and Venezuela Both did this we would be the worlds newest Bannana Republic.
In fact this may happen anyway without Iran.
If Iran stopped selling us oil and went to the Euro and Venezuela stopped selling us oil and went to the Euro and China dumped the Dollar and went with the Euro and they did it all at once we would be starving to death in less than a month.
This may already be in the works and its one of the ways in which the commies and islamists who are working together are planning to destroy the west. At least in my opinion.
Any way you look at it we are in a tough spot. And if we dont do everything just right we are toast. And from the Gov.s tract record of the last five years they dont have a clue.

You make great points. If these things come to pass we will have a lot of company. If the US economy collapses it will bring the rest of the world with it, triggering a worse depression than that of the 1930's. It is in the interest of even our enemies that this mess be sorted out somewhat cleanly-any attempt to destroy the US will make the instability in Iraq look like child's play by comparison.
But I do see a silver lining in such a disaster-the US will be cleansed of Islamania and its lapdogs once and for all because the reaction against them resulting from a depression will be quite ugly. Hopefully these things will not come to pass.

I agree with most of Hugh and Papa Bear comments. Their vision and suggestions are quite well and firm. But I don't think Israel will wait to see if she is to be attacked by the Iranians. I think that the Iranians already took lot of steps quite further and beyond any severe hint about their thoughts and real intentions. Israel had been left with no choice but to hold them back in not by will by force. As a matter of fact it is not just an Israeli concern. Iran might use nukes against Europe and/or US too at the same and first time they launch it. Shihab-4 and 5 missiles' creation are on progress and while finished they can alarm the red light of the US too.
The real and realistic solution for the threat is attacking the varied A-priority nuke complex sites in Iran (about 10 sites) at the same tactical time. The other sites' nuke structure can be tackled on further days. It is not important who the attackers will be – It can be the US forces, the Israeli forces or combined forces including NATO plans. The main importance is that it should be done at full understanding and cooperation.
Firm reaction now will prevent other totalitarian states to come into such an adventure again.

I understand that there are two levels of elections to be held in Iran this Friday, including to the "Experts" council that not only controls who may run for office, but can also pull the plug on the allegedly ailing Ayatola Khameini.
My point is that Ahmadinejad isn't quite as secure in his "office" as was Saddam Hussein. His supporters, outside of his milenialist Hidden Imam circle are primarily the extremely poor and they haven't fared any better under Ahmadinejad than they did under Ahmadinejad's predecessor.
Who knows what kind of "palace coup" could be going on while Mahmoud hosts his little conference.
As for disgusting conduct, what could be more disgusting than the representation from the Jewish nutbar Natura Kuerti contingent, who travelled to Iran to happily applaud the destruction of the "man-made" State of Israel, despite the promoted purpose of the conference -- to deny the Holocaust.

The problem with our country is that we the people are being worked to death and used by Corporate World. WE are overworked, overstressed, underpaid and lack adequate holiday rest breaks. When Corporate World is finished with us, they will take their money and split.
