Top British Army aide accused of spying for Iran

"James is of Iranian descent..."

"Top British Army aide accused of spying," by Duncan Gardham, Philip Johnston and Thomas Harding for the Telegraph, with thanks to DFS:

A military aide to the commander of British forces in Afghanistan appeared in court yesterday accused of spying. Cpl Daniel James, 44, is charged under the 1911 Official Secrets Act with "prejudicing the safety of the state" by passing information "calculated to be directly or indirectly useful to the enemy".

It was said he had communicated with a "foreign power" in the incident on Nov 2, believed to be Iran....

James is of Iranian descent and speaks fluent Pashtun, the main language in Afghanistan, making him invaluable to the Army which is very short of translators.

Neighbours at his £800,000 house in Brighton, said his mother speaks only Farsi, the main language of Iran.

Hmmm. I wonder what's in it for Daniel James

My bet - He has Muslim friends and is semi-Muslim himself. Entranced by the cult. He may have a sister or realitve who married a Muslim and was reached this way. I doubt it was for the money or because of any leftist ideology

Posted by: dennisw [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 21, 2006 6:54 AM

Hmmm... Globe and Mail says he was a translating.

These types can go native on ya! They become a little too "immersed" in the culture whose language they are translating

CORRECTION --->> Hmmm... Globe and Mail says he was a translator.

This looks really serious:

"But The Daily Telegraph has learned that he acts as an interpreter for Gen David Richards, the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan and one of the most senior officers in the Army."

and the reason for such treason is?
"James is of Iranian descent and speaks fluent Pashtun, the main language in Afghanistan, making him invaluable to the Army which is very short of translators."

The only mitigating factor is that the Iranians don't like the Taliban. In fact, going by the disparaging comments they make about their vids on youtube, most Iranians seem to loathe Pashtuns.

So Daniel James was as Iranian as Freddy Mercury? LOL

A Muslim soldier passing info to the enemy? Noooooooo! Say it ain't so! And here we all thought loyalty to nation came above loyalty to ummah for these guys. Well shut my mouth and call me racist!

Possibly this soldier's mother was one of many Iranians who fled after the Shah was deposed. I understand that some may have managed to get out with some of their wealth in tact, but not that many so one is left to wonder about how the family managed to acquire an £800,000 house. I'd have to guess that's rather beyond the average corporal's pay.

As for relations between the Taliban and the Iranian regime, well, the Taliban are Sunni and, of course, the Iranian regime is Shia. They don't like each other much, but when push comes to shove, hasn't Iran doled out money to the very Sunni Hamas?

Greetings all,

When the English are in charge of our own territory again, the first law to be re-instated will be Capital Punishment for Treason.

No EU Funded appeals dragging on & on, no years of waiting to see if we have hurt the prisoners feelings by convicting him, just a firing squad.

Iran would definately support any other Muslim death sect that was actively engaged in killing British Soldiers.

They know we have no leaders, & a left wing fifth column supported by the Guardianista & Al BBCeera.

I hope at our next election we do get a strong right wing nationalist Government. I also hope that Iran continues to provoke us - I long for the day when I see the smile of Irans President wiped off the the face of his face.

The United State too, has had unworthy soldiers in its ranks. When caught, the punishment should be severe and immediate.

It baffles ones mind to think your own countrymen think the enemy has a better life or a better plan than what your great country offers.

I stand ready to defend the liberties paid for with the blood of my ancestors.

"After less than three hours of deliberation Thursday, a military jury in North Carolina found Army Sergeant Hasan Akbar guilty of murdering fellow comrades, including Major Gregg Stone of Boise.

"I hope it brings closure for the family - it's been tough for them," Major Bill Iulianno, a friend of Gregg Stone.

This is the first time since the Vietnam era that an American has been convicted of killing fellow soldiers during a time of war.

The attack happened two years ago in Kuwait, as U.S. troops were preparing to move into Iraq.

It marked the first Idaho casualty of the Iraq war.

It's been almost exactly two years since Major Gregg Stone was murdered.

Thursday his killer's conviction was welcomed news to friends and comrades at Gowen Field.

"We were co-workers about ten years. I met Gregg at Mountain Home, we were stationed on active duty together and he flew B1’s, I flew F-15’s and we worked together in a wing weapons shop," said Major Iulianno.

Major Iulianno considered Gregg Stone a friend and a tough airman, but military training didn't prepare Major Stone for an attack from within.

"It's a dangerous job we do and we all accept the responsibilities involved, but when it comes from a fellow American in your own country, it's a tough thing to handle," Iulianno said.

Two years ago, in Kuwait, Army Sergeant Hasan Akbar used grenades and rifles to kill and wound his fellow soldiers. Captain Christopher Seifert died immediately. Major Stone died a couple days later. It was Iulianno who broke the news to Stone's family.

"I actually was the family liaison officer to Gregg's mom, and so I was there for notification and assisted her and her family through the funeral process, and was at Arlington for the burial at Arlington National Cemetery. It was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done in my life, to go through that," Iulianno said.

A military jury at Fort Bragg convicted Akbar of murder and attempted murder."

"The Lebanon-born Muslim Marine who was reportedly taken "hostage" in Iraq in July, was feared beheaded, and then mysteriously turned up in Lebanon safe and with his head still on, has now been charged with desertion.

Here's what Wassef Ali Hassoun said at his news conference on July 19:

CPL. WASSEF ALI HASSOUN, U.S. MARINE CORPS: Good afternoon.
'In the name of God, I'm glad to come home. And thanks -- thanks for everybody who prayed and support me. I understand that there are too many questions, and respectfully, I ask that the media respect my need to spend time with my family.

I did not desert my post. I was captured and held against my will by anti-coalition forces for 19 days. This was a very difficult and challenging time for me. Since my release, I have been fully participating in the repatriation process.

I thank everyone. I thank everyone who was looking for me and give thanks for god for everything. I would like to tell all the Marines, as well as those others who are serving in Iraq, to keep their heads up and spirits high. Once a Marine, always a Marine. Semper Fi.

Thank you.'

He has now been charged following a five-month investigation with taking unauthorized leave from the unit where he served as an Arabic interpreter; loss of government property; theft of a military firearm for allegedly leaving the Marine camp while still in possession of his 9 mm service pistol; and theft and wrongful appropriation of a government vehicle."

StrategyPage publish : "October 3, 2005: France has been detecting, or at least fearing, loyalty problems among the fifteen percent of its soldiers who are Moslem. The military insists that these second and third generation soldiers of, for the most part, Arab descent, are loyal. But many Christian soldiers, NCOs and officers are not so sure. Harassment of Moslem troops by Christian soldiers is common. There have been no major incidents of soldiers turned terrorists, but the abuse from paranoid soldiers, NCOs and officers might push Moslem soldiers to go bad. This is believed more likely because there are no Moslem chaplains. Thus Moslem soldiers seek spiritual advice from clerics with no military experience, and possible a radical agenda. More worrisome is that radicalized soldiers will leave the army equipped with skills they can use for terrorist attacks."

Hugh-

Good thing the French haven't fought a war in ages- the casualties suffered by the French at the hands of their "countrymen" would probably exceed those suffered at the hands of their enemy!

"From a counterintelligence perspective, the Soviet military, and the KGB did not foresee the mass defection from Soviet Muslim soldiers to the mujahideen. Because of the ideological views of the KGB, the primitive view held of the Afghani culture, and derivatively that of the mujahideen, the preparation for such a mass defection was nonexistent. This mass defection led to the withdrawal of Soviet Muslim soldiers from the Afghani front and the insertion of Russian soldiers. This move was a double edged sword for the Soviets; while bringing in qualified and trustworthy troops, the insertion of Russian soldiers brought the war home to ethnic Russians and with it, disapproval of the war."

The abdullahs of the world can't serve two masters.

Abd'allah = Slave of Allah

Collectively we need to promote an understanding of this.

albion-

Checked out your link. Pretty funny stuff! Looks like France needs to be more like Iran-shoot off their big mouths, then get proxies to do the dirty work. I don't think the US is interested in that job anymore and they have all of Europe going along with their foolishness. Time to create a French styled Hamas.

If found guilty, cpl. James should face a firing squad. The same punishment should be meted out to ex-sgt. Akbar. Ex-cpl. Hassoun needs 10 years in Portsmouth Naval prison follwed by revocation of citizenship and deportation.

It would be interesting to know how he came by a British name. I thought it strange that someone with a British name should help the Iranians but of course the BBC did not think it was worth mentioning his background. Was his father British or did he change his name?

They are not saying much but it is unusual in the British army to have 44 year old Corporals in headquarters positions requiring special skills. Is he a volunteer reservist or was he specially recruited for his language?

.....Let us keep ourselves aware of where the Muslims true alliance lies. A recent survey shows the majority of Muslims in America consider themselves Muslims First, Americans Second......I believe the survey.

Moslem US Marine: an oxymoron; an aberration permitted by morons

The BBC are saying that military sources have informed them that this could be a potential disaster for NATO in Afghanistan.
Apparently initial reports that he wss a Pashtu speaker were erroneous and he is in fact speaks Dari, an Afghan language closely related to Farsi spoken by many of the non-Pashtun ethnic groups in Afghanistan. Apparently this language rather than Pashtu is used when people from different parts of the country wish to converse.
The Shiite Hazaras speak Dari - they massacrd 2500 Taliban prisoners at Mazar-i-Sharif in 1997 (it says in wikipedia).Eleven Iranian diplomats were murdered by Taliban soldiers, acting without orders, when they captured Mazar-i-Sharaf in 1998. As many as 2000 Hazara Shiite civilians were killed at the same time.
I get the impression that Iranian / Taliban relations are not particularly cordial. What everybody is waiting for at the moment is a large scale Taliban offensive against mainly British forces in Helmund province, which they are preparing for in the spring when the weather improves. I suppose it would be too much to hope that the Iranians won't pass on any useful info they've gained to their Sunni pals.

Posted by: wallyUK [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 21, 2006 6:21 PM

WallyUK - I'm afraid you are correct in not looking for any help from the Iranians. While the sunnis and shias hate each other, they hate the Crusader more. Happy Christmas to you and all Britons of good will!

Posted by: MP [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 21, 2006 6:47 PM

It was just on TV, he is not really British, he is Iranian, they said he came here 'over 20 years ago' and only 'recently' changed his name to an English sounding name.

Posted by: EnglishBlondie [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 21, 2006 7:13 PM

If this man has caused the loss of life of coalition troops by his actions there is only one fit punishment.
In correct military tradition for a spy, he should face a firing squad at dawn.
I am sure the British Army could find more than enough willing volunteers to form the firing party.
