Islamic leader vows to stay in Somalia

The jihad will continue. By Les Neuhaus for Associated Press, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

AFGOYE, Somalia - The U.N.-backed Somali government on Friday moved swiftly to assert authority over the capital city Islamic fighters abandoned the day before, though the leader of the insurgents vowed they would continue to fight.

Somalia's prime minister was preparing to enter the capital, Mogadishu, which Islamic forces held for six months before a string of defeats in the last 10 days to government troops backed by Ethiopian soldiers and jets.

Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, the executive leader of the Council of Islamic Courts, told The Associated Press Friday that his fighters would not be pushed out of Somalia.

"We will not run away from our enemies. We will never depart from Somalia. We will stay in our homeland," he said from the southern coastal port of Kismayo, where his forces retreated from Mogadishu.

Maybe they prefer the "slow Jihad"

As much as I hate to say it, I think that this has all the makings of another Afghanistan or Iraq. A quick victory, followed by years of terrorist attacks on the occupying forces. Maybe the Somalian government has a different angle on keeping the insurgents under control, but short of mass killings, I just don't see it.

Don't celebrate too much. This is only a battle.

The fanatics have only fled to another location like cockroaches and likely temporarily. This isn't finished.

They'll be back.

Wonderful though it is to hear some good news for a change, I'm not at all convinced it will last for long. They will just re-group and re-arm.

I think that it is important that the United Nations and/or other countries move rapidly to support the Somali government so that the Islamists cannot make it look like a purely religious issue or an occupation by Ethiopia. Ethiopia has done a great service here, but there is a history of territorial disputes between Ethiopia and Somalia, so giving Ethiopia a large role runs the risk of attracting anti-Ethiopian support for the Islamic Courts movement. Eritrea, which like Ethiopia is majority Christian, has been supporting the Islamic Courts movement (apparently just diplomatically, not with arms), as far as one can tell purely out of hatred for Ethiopia.

The UN and other countries need to reinforce the government militarily, make it clear that they stand behind the secular government, and help to maintain order and restore basic services.

hierophant,

Thanks for the news link. Now I'm a little bit confused, though. The islamic courts movement declared jihad against Ethiopia, right? To me, I'm not an islamic scholar, that means war. So when Ethiopia invades to help support the internationally recognized government of Somalia, what's the problem? Were we not supposed to invade Germany during WWII after they declared war on us? To me, if a country declares war on us, they are fair game.
Getting up on my soap box now:
It's why I think Israel has every justification to attack the Palestinians for launching rockets at them, and if they are doing it from civilian packed locations, then too bad about the collateral damage. The Israelis are following the Geneva Conventions and get beat up in the UN about it. The Palestinians are the ones violating all the rules of war and have no compassion for human life. We need to stand up for them in the UN!!! Too bad Bolton is gone. Hopefully our next Ambassador will also have a spine and not be like our pseudo-Dhimmi Condi.

Why stop with the liberation of Mogadishu?

Keep going to Kismayo and finish them off there!

Go Ethiopia!! If you don't muslims will allways be able to claim that this is muslim land and then
start agitating for special needs
and then
special laws
and then
driving away of non-muslims
and then declaring the land as part of a greater Calipahate
and then
you must cede or you will have a fatwa placed on your ass.
Never surrender.
NEVER surrender.
NEVER SURRENDER!

Eithiopians are great fighters. They had a batallion in Korea in 52-53 -maybe 1000-1500. minimum height between 6.5 and 8 feet (maybe a slight exageration). In training, they ran everywhere doubletime with full packs and rifles.

The rumor was they all swore to fight to the death and never come back. I guess that was abborgated when the peace accord was signed.

Their kids /grandkids seem to be cut from the same stock.
