In Saddam's last thoughts
UPDATE: The cellphone execution video that is making the rounds does not seem to bear this out. (Thanks to Jesse Petrilla.)
SECOND UPDATE: The incident does seem to have occurred. The shouts of "Muqtada" can clearly be heard on the video, as well as what is apparently the voice of Saddam responding derisively by saying "Muqtada" and possibly laughing. The New York Times has this:
The room was quiet as everyone began to pray, including Mr. Hussein. “Peace be upon Mohammed and his holy family.”Two guards added, “Supporting his son Moktada, Moktada, Moktada.”
Mr. Hussein seemed a bit stunned, swinging his head in their direction.
They were talking about Moktada al-Sadr, the firebrand cleric whose militia is now committing some of the worst violence in the sectarian fighting; he is the son of a revered Shiite cleric, Muhammad Sadiq al-Sadr, whom many believe Mr. Hussein ordered murdered.
“Moktada?” he spat out, mixing sarcasm and disbelief.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps an unwitting nod to Iraq's new masters. From CNN, with thanks to Ray:
As the noose was tightened around Hussein's neck, one of the executioners yelled, "long live Muqtada al-Sadr," Haddad said.Hussein mockingly uttered one last phrase before he died: "Muqtada al-Sadr," according to Haddad.

It goes on to say
An executioner read from the Quran and then carried out the hanging.Wonder which one that was?
The other interesting thing was that the hangmen were masked, but the convict wasn't. Normally it's the other way around, so that the witnesses don't need to see the contortion on the convict's face.

Interesting that he should say that... Was he mocking al Sadr and the Shi'ites? Maybe it was his own private joke that went to the grave with him...

He was also supposed to have said long live Palestine and Palestine is Arab. Although, the guy who actually filmed it didn’t record it or mention it. I am thinking it never happened this is just spin. I bet he never heard of sadr.

From the photo it appears that terrorists double as executioners -- judging by their masks.

I expect to see many more claims that saddam blessed them over the next few days. The Sunnis lost their hero and can’t handle the loss. Expect to see claims he escaped and is safe, his double died in his place. The best will be claims that so and so predicted it in a vision. Sit back and watch the fun, this is just starting.

Iraq and the rest of the world would be better off without saddam and sadr. One is in hell now and hopefully the other will soon follow.

Is Sadr guy going to be any better than Sadam? I'll doubt it. I really don't know how we ever going to conclude this war?
World is now less safe than it would have been if we didn't go to war in Iraq, because Iran is threatening and we are no longer enabled to fight Iran.
Pakistan could become our next nightmare after Iraq. IT HAS more than twice as many people as Iran, six times more than Iraq, many primed for Islamic extremism by a legacy of poverty and illiteracy left by decades of misrule by corrupt secular leaders, civilian and military.
It already has nuclear weapons, and ballistic missiles made with North Korean help. It shelters jihadists battling Western forces across its border, and fanatical cells training Muslim youth in Western countries to put bombs on buses and metros.
If Iraq has turned into a nightmare for the US President, George Bush, think about Islamists gaining power in Pakistan, population 166 million, and their hands on its nuclear arsenal.

"Hussein mockingly uttered one last phrase before he died: "Muqtada al-Sadr," according to Haddad."
Identifying the next most important target for us is always helpful, isn't it?
Like I said, and will continue to say Stay on topic and stay on target. Robert and Hugh have a funny knack of turning predication into fact.
Hopefully the Saudi backed Sunnis whittle their numbers a bit before all is said and done.

I hope someone does a transcript of the video, which, as HistorianTheologian noted above, is available from FoxNews or Drudge (and probably a gazillion other places by now). In citing time frames below, I'm referring to the version linked by Fox as of 8:30ish EST:
I think this incident takes place from about :50 to 1:05 on the video: The chanting sounds like it includes an invocation of Ali, followed by someone off-camera calling out what sounds like "Muqtada!" three times, and then Saddam says something (the audio quality is about on the level of a cell phone video). It seems like they point the camera to catch his reaction.
If you're curious about this, but not inclined to watch the actual execution, just stop the video after that. On the version I downloaded, the moment of execution is after the 1:30 mark.

MusHuntCowboy said, "Pakistan could become...many primed for Islamic extremism by a legacy of poverty and illiteracy left by decades of misrule..."
Absolutely not. Lack of education and poverty has nothing to do with extremism. In fact, most "extremists are well educated and financially stable and in a well supported network.
This is a Bush/Blair/PC/Liberal idea to excuse Islam and absolve it of any liability. Basically, because the West hasn't spent more money on their education and curing their poverty, blame the West for their extremism. Blame the West for their terrorist acts. Each time an extremist strikes, it is our fault for not doing more to cure their societal ills. Along the same lines, blame the victim.
On the topic of Pakistan, their former leader said, "Our people will eat grass but we will have the Islamic bomb" (Nukes). So, they invest money in WMD's and it is our job to send MY tax money to Pakistan to feed their kids. If we don't, they are gonna grow up to kill us cuz we didn't.

The audio for the video is quite echoey. Are you sure he didn't say, "Muqtada!, Floss your teeth!"???
I know I'd say that if I ever met Muqtada!
Sorry, I digressed a little... I'm hopeful that the, "professional" video will have better audio on it, because it will put this issue to bed.
Cheers,

I almost felt sorry for the poor bastard. Well, almost. Maybe compassionate. He could have had the world by the nuts on several occasions. He blew all of them, too cocky, I suppose. It was like a Zen chess match with America, this eccentric little murderous man called Hussein joviantly played. Now he has broken neck. Chess anyone?

Never fear. Al Sadr is like a squirrel with one tooth. Seldome does he have the finest nuts. Chasing squirrels is tiresome. We must wait for the two tooth squirrel with the finest of nuts! My assesment would be to have a little faith in the good guys, wait and see what more troops mean, and check in. Same bat time, same bat channel.

So, he was cuffed with the Quran in his hand. Does that mean that the Quran went with him to hxll? - that would solve all the problems with Islam.

The invocation of Muqtada al-Sadr's name leads credence that this is a Shia trial. Next the Sunis will get their revenge with some dead, Shiites. Later the Shiites will extract some revenge with a bomb in a market place. Then the Sunnis will . . . etc etc ad infinitum.
Move our soldiers where they can do some good (New Kurdistan?) and someone pop some popcorn.
If only someone in the US administration could make this understandable. Bush is about as articulate as Rocky Balboa. (the character, not necessarily the actor)

There have been so many conflicting reports on who said what during the hanging. Sure wish there had been a Western reporter there, fluent in Arabic, who could hash it all out.

He was reciting from the Quran and said Mohammed, not Al Sadr, this according to translators on CNN.

Message to Robert and others, I just watched the video of Saddam's hanging from some whitness' cell phone that's circulating which was quite good quality with good audio for being from a cell phone, he was in the middle of a prayer when they dropped him. While he may have muttered something about him earlier, the bit about Sadr isn't true for his final words.

I cant help but wonder where this big brave muqtada dood was for the two + decades sadaam was raping, torturing, and murdering his people.
It seems he borrowed a pair of testicles from his sister after america defeated the baath party regime and captured sadaam.
at December 31, 2006 6:45 AM
Why would Saddam say the name of Muqtada al-Sadr just before he died???, was it a message to Muqtada al-Sadr knowing that the gravest danger to Iraq is posed by forces of Muqtada al-Sadr. These forces surpass Sunni extremists and even al-Qaida terrorists as the greatest obstacle to stability, according to a new Defense Department report to Congress.

this is off topic but i had to post it.
im used to hearing the cause of all of islams problems, illnesses and failures is because of the jews. But i was shocked to find it is jews fault muslims circumcize their women!
>>>Sarah circumcised Hagar
Tabari II:72 Sarah swore to cut something off of Hagar. “ I shall cut off her nose, I shall cut off her ear-but no, that would deform her. I will circumcise her instead.” So she did that, and Hagar took a piece of cloth to wipe the blood away. For that reason women have been circumcised and have taken pieces of cloth down to today.
TABARI: Muhammad Ibni Jarir Abu Jafar Al-Tabari (838-923 AD), was one of the highest intellectuals luminaries of Islamic learning and is today recognized as the father of Islamic History and one of the greatest historians that the world has produced.
Among his works, the two most outstanding which influenced the later writers are (1) "The Exhaustive Commentary on the Qur'an" and (2) "Tarikh-ur-Rasul wal Maluk" (Annals of Apostles and Kings) which is his universal history. His commentary on the Qur'an comprising about 3,000 leaves is a standard book, have the largest collection of exegetical traditions.
Thus Abu Jafar Al-Tabari, known as `Livy of Arabs' and the father of Islamic History is one of the greatest historians of the Mediaeval times who paved the way for the gigantic growth of Muslim Historiography in the world.
