Not a shot was fired yet the Somali jihad was suddenly over...

Yes. It was sweet -- although many among the Western elites would prefer a "stable" Sharia-ruled Somalia. By Xan Rice in The Guardian:

Their fortress fell without a shot. After just nine days of clashes in Somalia's hinterland, the Islamists who had vowed to fight to the death abandoned Mogadishu, the city they had governed since June. From having controlled most of southern and central Somalia, they were holed up yesterday in the southern port city of Kismaayo, facing annihilation by Ethiopian troops.

Ali Mohamed Ghedi, Prime Minister in Somalia's transitional government - an irrelevance until last week - rode triumphantly into Mogadishu on Friday, announcing the end of 'terrorism' in the country. Ethiopia, which together with the US has stoked fears about the rise of a terrorist state in the Horn of Africa, was basking in the success of a campaign that was swifter and more successful than anyone had predicted.

'Nobody expected the Islamists to show this little political resilience,' said Matt Bryden, a consultant to the conflict-monitoring body, International Crisis Group. 'They were the first movement to pacify southern Somalia for 16 years, yet they crumbled like a pack of cards.'

The Guardian also recently published an article entitled "International lawlessness: The US-backed invasion of Somalia to topple its Islamists is a dangerous, illegal act of aggression," by Salim Lone, UN spokesman in Iraq in 2003 and a columnist for the Daily Nation in Kenya (thanks to Douglas Murray).

I think it is wildly premature to say the Somali jihad is over, just cos they didnt stand and fight.

I hope I am wrong but isnt this what iSlumic 'fighters' do? running and hiding, then using the civilian infrastructure to wage a long, drawn-out and costly resistance?

There hasnt been a stable government in Somalia for 15 years, if the Ethiopian backed Somali forces cant restore order i fear a return to the iSlumic ways, hmm sound familiar?

these muslim terrorists cannot face an armed military, as these muslim terrorists cowards get their strenght by attacking unarmed civilians. these muslims terrorist are cowards to the core and only can achieve their dominance from ambush as stated in their war manual "koran".

Well Matt, a lot of regular visitors to this site could have told you that the "Islamists" would not stand and fight a conventional war,as two out of the three previous posts indicate.

Have the self proclaimed experts at the International Crisis Group ever managed to forsee anything?

Aren't these the geniuses who stated - just prior to the Bali bombing - that Indonesia would, in the forseeable future, see no major terrorist action?

Underwhelmed.

The Guardian believes that the U.S. backed the invasion of Somolia? Is this the same paper that believes that the Lebanese government is a puppet government, also set up by the U.S.? Is there something toxic in the water in the U.K.? Shouldn't they be taking some sort of medication?

What is the government’s official position on the whole Ethiopia/Somalia thing? I'm under the impression that most Americans are rooting for Ethiopia but as far as I know we never gave any official aid or even a thumbs up towards Ethiopia, so the could hardly call the whole thing "US backed."

The expulsion of the Islamists from Mogadishu was due to:
1) The Islamists couldn't find enough women and children to hide behind.

or
2) The Ethiopian Army didn't have reporters from CNN, NBC, The New York Times, and other MSM embedded in their troops.

Hiding behind women and children is a tactic that only works when fighting Jews and Christians, it doesn't work anywhere else in the world..

If the west wasn't Christianized, and humanized by Christian values and attitudes, the muslims would not have got past square one.

The main reason the muslims conquered India is because the Indians had a different mindset and informal rules as to when and how to fight.. kind of the same situation that the Celts ran into when confronting the Romans.

Know thy enemy and adjust accordingly.. as they do, so must you.. give them their own Khaybar and Banu Qurayza at Yathrib.

Give them the Abu Afak and Asma bint Marwan treatment, give them the Pearl.Berg treatment.

Our leaders need to learn that, but that means abandoning Christian and Jewish attitudes towards the "weak and helpless".

And FYI, for those who don't like bleeding heart liberals..(and I don't respect them at all) they are the children and the logical consequence of the influence of Christianity, family values, and love thy neighbor tolerance and patience.

Sorry, but them is facts.

Some jihadwatchers can't seem to enjoy good news.

Of course nothing is completely finished and solved, it never is. The Islamists may yet recover and make a comeback of sorts.

But for the sake of all of us who are battling this scourge of militant Islam, just for now, for this day, for this week, ENJOY the sight of those threatening thugs scattering like little mice in every direction when confronted by decisive and resolute counterforce.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The latest from A.P. wire:

"An Associated Press reporter saw hundreds of Islamic fighters, many of them Arabs and South Asians, fleeing in heavily armed trucks toward the Kenyan border, 100 miles to the south.

The Islamic forces have a base near the border on a small peninsula called Ras Kamboni, where there is a pier and traditional oceangoing boats known as dhows.

Ethiopian MiG fighter jets flew low over the ocean looking for boats that might be carrying the escaping Islamic fighters.

The Islamic forces began to disintegrate after a night of artillery attacks at the front line and following a mutiny within its ranks, witnesses said. Government spokesman Abdirahman Dinari said he had information that Islamic forces were moving south toward the Kenyan border."
