Don’t Get Too Excited about the President’s Warning to Iran and Syria

Andrew C. McCarthy explains at NR why the President's warning to Iran and Syria amounts to less than meets the eye.

In any event, most telling was one administration official’s sense that our forces in Iraq had “sure sent a signal to the Iranians” by detaining the Iranian military officials who were captured in raids in mid-December. Yet, even as the president was preparing his new strategy, even as he was readying the words of warning he uttered so forcefully last night, those Iranians were released by the Maliki government and sent back to Iran after about a week in custody.

What signal can this have sent? This one: If you’re an Iranian in Iraq helping to kill American troops, the comeuppance is that we’ll hold you for a few days and then send you back home.

Couldn't just explain they were found run over by a truck along the roadside while setting out IEDs? Or it's an awful big country, lots of lawlessness, just don't be stupid and use an American bullet on them. Or drug them and implant a bug/gps locator, or just send them back and credit them with spilling the beans about Iranian operations a week or two later, that would take care of them.

during Bush's speech, US military took over Iranian consulate near the border of Iraq/iran and captured the office's computers, files, and iranian office people. hopefully they will be fully interigated before they are handed over. so dont totally write off the US military. l hope the changes in command produces better results, and less restrictions on the US military.

I am not about to "get excited" about anything in terms of our government doing the right thing regarding policies against those who would destroy all of civilization as we know it. Our nation's capital is populated by dumkoffs and traitors. If I could have my way with Washington DC for one year, I'd purge the whole lot of them and start over. The hundreds of idiots in our congress and the current administration are going to be the death of us all. Nary a one of them have the slightest clue of what is really going on in the world.

RONN CANTU: All I really want to say, because I shouldn’t be doing this -- all I want to say is, right now American soldiers are dying in a Sunni-Shiite civil war, a sectarian civil war -- that’s a fact, based on my personal observations. Soldiers’ hands are tied to defend themselves. Every time a soldier fires his weapon, he has to sign paperwork making sure it was justified. I want to stress that soldiers want to go on the offensive, but everything we’re doing here is on the defense. And it’s a belief of the soldiers I’ve talked to that any troop increase over here, it’s just going to be more sitting ducks, more targets.

Everything we’re doing is reactive. People go out on patrols, and they're sitting ducks until somebody strikes first. There was a story relayed to me by somebody I know -- I don’t want to give his name -- a soldier was shot in the face, and nobody fired back, because they couldn’t see where it was coming from. That’s what this has come down to, and that’s just plain fact. I’m sorry, [inaudible] --

AMY GOODMAN: Sergeant Cantu, can you explain the Appeal for Redress that you’ve signed?

SGT. RONN CANTU: All it is is a -- it’s just that one of the rights that soldiers have is the right to communicate unfettered with their elected member of Congress, and it’s just about a troop withdrawal. I mean, the Appeal for Redress website is pretty straightforward. If anybody’s in there, very straightforward.

And from Sami Rasoul, an Iraqi American in Najaf, more troops mean more resistance, and given the testimony of Sergeant Cantu, more dead Americans because our troops hands are tied and they can't shoot back, because it upsets the Iraqi government of al Maliki/al Sadr/al Hakim/al Sistani (all of whom, incidentally are Shi'ite.

This does not make sense Bush is wasting America to defend and support an Iranian regime (the Government of Iraq).

In other new Hamas appeared to break new ground Wednesday over its stance on recognizing Israel. In an interview with the Reuters news agency, exiled Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal said Hamas sees Israel as a ‘reality’ that exists. Meshal suggested formal recognition of Israel would come if Israel agreed to recognize a Palestinian state.

Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal: “This is reality but I do not deal with it from the point of view of recognizing or admitting it. It is a fact that was the result of historical factors. We today are talking of Arab and Palestinian readiness to accept a state on 1967 borders on the assumption that this will provide an important amount of stability and peace in the region. The question is: Is there Israeli, American and international readiness to admit this Palestinian demand?"

Of course this is all an obfuscating ploy as Hamas still refuses to recognizing Israel, all Meshal said is that they accept a historical fact, and why should Israel accept a 1967 border. The Arabs attacked in 1973 and lost, and Israel needs the 1973 borders to ensure it's tenuous security.

Okay, I get it. We fight with everyone at once! The Sunnis hate our plan and hate us and the Shiites hate us and our plan but we can fight them indefinitely.

We can just fight and fight and if it becomes a regional conflagration with a nuclear dimension, well that's good because the 2008 Presidential election will be called off and our "WAR PRESIDENT" will get a third term.

President George Bush has undertaken an epoch-old problem of suppressing the barbarian invasion of a new dark age, an age darker than centuries past when the crusaders under Pope Urban II advanced against the Islamic tribes of the middle east. Actually no, I think there is something on the cards now, you work on the basis of trying not to be seen as the bad guy to that mythical beast the moderate Muslims, we catch them red handed, though we could have done it ages ago, even the left is aware of Iranian involvement, you pull their tail a bit and put a little pressure on, they either blink or make that mistake, the pressure is on. Also the Saudi's almost seem to be begging the USA to do something about Iran. Oil prices are down, marvellous.

I think that a number of attacks on the West will occur soon.

Although, actions do speak louder than words, I was encouraged that Bush used the term "radical Islam" more than "terror" last night.

It appears that Bush will force Maliki's hand to disarm Sadr or else get out of our way. Exactly what will be done to Syria and especially Iran remains to be seen. The less specific tactical information the better. We don't need the weepy media setting up shop to relay all the "atrocities" that will most assuredly be committed by the US in the near future. In their eyes we're supposed to win a war without actually killing anyone.

In reality, the war stretches well outside Iraq's borders as we already know. The Islamists are everywhere you look. The specific short-term gains of a decisive US military victory in Iraq is speculative. The long-term gain of finally beginning to properly identify the enemy, is invaluable. You cannot wage a successful military campaign against an undefined enemy. The war against the tactic known as "terror" just isn't up to snuff.

Don't know if this specific communication is real; but I do know of people in forward positions right now, that say the same kinds of things.


I do not believe our combat forces should face courtmarshalls for trying to defend themselves when they get home. Twist, and turn, and spin around, and re-define; I say it's WRONG!


I also believe that this individual will probably be brought up on some kind of charges for his attempted redress; the extra "twenty" ain't gonna cut it.

There will never be any democracy in the Middle east or any other part of Islamia because Islam fundamentally opposes democratic principles. So Bush is losing on this one before he even started.

Bush may finally have figured this out--finally (we hope).

Saddam was toppled three years ago. But there was never ANY reason to believe that Iraqis would welcome America and of course they have NOT.

Muslims do not believe in freedom. Therefore it is NOT possible to liberate them unless they are de-Isalamized.

Unfortunately, there is no reason to believe the Bush adminstration has progressed this far in thei rthinking; I doubt even the pentagon understands that Islam and democracy don't mix.

So America is trapped in an unwinnable situation: trying to make a democracy out of a staunchly Islamic society where totalitarian beliefs have held the human mind captive for over 15 centuries and show no sign of fading away anytime soon.

So, yes. Bush is going to continue banging his head against the wall all the while making it look politically palatable to cover his derriere. And by staying in that Middle East hellhole we may avert another terror attack here (but not necessarily).

ps-Saddam DID have WMDs. However, ALL Islamic countries are potentially very, very dangerous which is something most of us didn't know in 2003.
