Last jihadist stronghold in Somalia captured

Ras Kamboni, at the southernmost tip of Somalia, has been a stronghold for jihadist activity and a conduit for al-Qaeda for a number of years, as illustrated by this BBC report from December, 2001. Its capture is a significant victory.

"Islamic hideout in Somalia said captured," by Mohamed Olad Hassan for AP:

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Ethiopian-backed government forces captured the last remaining stronghold of the Islamic movement in southern Somalia, the Somali defense minister said Friday, hours after warlords met with the president and promised to enlist their militiamen in the army.
The southern town of Ras Kamboni fell after five days of heavy fighting, Defense Minister Col. Barre "Hirale" Aden Shire told The Associated Press. He said government troops backed by Ethiopian forces and MiG fighter jets chased fleeing Islamic fighters into nearby forests and the fighting would continue. He did not give casualty figures.
Ras Kamboni is in a rugged coastal area a few miles from the Kenyan border. It is not far from the site of a U.S. airstrike Monday targeting suspected al-Qaida militants — the first U.S. offensive in Somalia since 18 American soldiers were killed here in 1993.
The report of the town's fall came after Somalia's warlords met with President Abdullahi Yusuf in the capital of Mogadishu and pledged to disarm their militias, a major step toward bringing calm to this city after years of chaos.

These Ethiopeans have achieved in just a few days that the whole of international community has failed to achieve in years.

Hey maybe, once they're done here, they can give us a hand in Afghanistan! I bet they'll be far cheaper and loyal than the pakistanis!

"These Ethiopeans have achieved in just a few days that the whole of international community has failed to achieve in years."

This could be one more good product that Ethiopia can export. GREAT JOB Ethopia! :)

It sounds like they're staying in contact with the mujahideen and pursuing to prevent them from concealment in the civilian population. Good work, and explains why the UN, European media, and leftist groups are in such an uproar. Their precious jihadis are in trouble.

I second that! The money we are spending on the "Palestinians" would be much better spent on aid to Ethiopia. I only wish our own Forces could fight under the same Rules of Engagement as the Ethiopians. :-) If the were allowed to fight as they should in a war I don't think we'd need the Ethiopians giving us a hand there.

Let's be glad they're keeping things on the up and up in the immediate sphere of influence.

And God help us if Hillary gets elected in '08. She'll kick out Bill from the White House and move in Keith Ellison.

There will be kuftar and iftar and halal and amdihulla and whatevaah dinners there. Nazeem will romp around the White House Lawn..

.. I thing I am about to be SICK!!!!

When are Australia, UK, Canada and maybe USA going to help these Ethiopians out with resources? These people have severe economic and infrastructure problems themselves and all our words about how impressed we are , are just that, words.

Every Australian gave Indonesia $50 each through the government to help them out with their Tsunami. Wasted money. If all of the above governments gave $50 a head to Ethiopia that would be $205 Bn. Maybe too much actually but heck words are so cheap aren't they?

And yeah how about renting the Ethiopian Army for Afghanistan and Iraq? Bit of outsourcing can't hurt.

Jihadists are difficult to defeat if you are a paper tiger. The Ethiopians and Somalis are no paper tigers.
Last weekend I saw the U.S. take credit for the strong action against the terrorists when we struck a building with a C-130 gunship.
We claimed to have cut the head off the snake but apparently we missed the targeted Al Qaida after all.
Why can't we give credit where it is due? This was not some CIA or Defense Department success story. The Africans did it. They know how to fight in a language that militant islam can understand. We could learn a lot from them but we're too damned PC to do it.

Posted by: Paper Tiger [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 12, 2007 6:51 PM

Crumbs who would have thought the Americans would take credit where it was not due? We need to believe in Superman apparently.

"buy Ethiopian Coffee!" - squire

Ethiopian coffee is good, and it tends to be very strong. I think coffee originates from Ethiopia too. I'll make a point of sticking to it.

I presume that the jihadists will find no sanctuary in Kenya. I guess they will learn to swim.

The jihadists are isolated, there is no friendly country with a border to the south. I'm going to guess that Kenya's army is on high alert.

I, too think we owe them more than merely a dept of gratitude. Buying Ethiopian products is one way we can do our little part.

Politically speaking we have here a country more than deserving of Preferred Nation status for trade purposes.

I am sure Ted [the Red] Kennedy would disagree.

Take the last train to Boston,
You can meet me at the station,
If were lucky we won’t worry bout no
Infidel occupation,
Oh oh oh,
Oh oh oh, oh…
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Don't worry cause I'm never cummin home.

It's not just the coffee. The couple of times I ate at an Ethiopian restaurant, the food, particularly the vegetables, had a rich flavor that one doesn't normally get in food here. Somehow, the layout is unique, and involves eating the injera - the crepe like flat bread that doubles as the plate.

We used to get the same feeling with Chinese food, back in the day when Chinese was made by Chinese not American Chinese. Same with Thai or Japanese. Now a days it all seems like American chop suey. Unless of course you do what we do, make it yourself, it’s easy and delicious.

I'd like to see the Ethiopian population in Minneapolis grow robustly.

I use to love Chinese food in India. In US, I find it "different" and so, yes, I make my own too.

By the way, tgusa, joined 910 group yet?

By the way, tgusa, joined 910 group yet?

No, is it important? How do I join? What are the motivations, my views are all over the place, not the standard(of today)conservative, will they accept me, should I accept them?
What do you think?

All of you are giving sole credit to the Ethiopians, but they did not begin to win this war until our special forces arrived there. This moment, we've got 5 warships sitting off the coast of Somalia. None of you seem to have any comprehension of just how much we are involved there. Give some credit to our soldiers please, after all they're the ones doing all the dirty work for us. Shame on you!

And yes, I have Ethiopian coffee in my refrigerator. It is quite good and rich.

P.S. If you've ever wondered how such a sizable enclave of Christianity (Ethiopia) survived in northeastern Africa, so close to the evil empire of Muhammad's Arabia, look no further than a good topographical map.

It's the same reason the Kurds in Iraq have managed to maintain so much of their pre-Islamized identity though nominally Muslims.

And it's the main reason that the mostly Tajik Northern Alliance, commanded by the very able Ahmed Shah Masood (pbuh; seriously), were able to hold off the ruthless Taliban in Afghanistan for so many years leading up to 9-11.

Mountains!

Mountains are a strategic bastion for defenders in every case. Not only are they ideal for defense (laying ambushes, holding the high ground, stone walls, etc.) but attackers also get lost in them, are hard to supply, suffer from harsh weather, etc. Thank God for Mountains.

Seriously, look at Ethiopia on a topo map. It's a vast maze of high ground surrounded by flat plains and desert. Must have caused Muslim would-be subjugators much difficulty and many casualties over the last 13 Centuries. Good!

What on Gods green Earth are you talking about Bonneia? Sleep it off before you embarrass yourself any further. Do you think we are a bunch of kerrys or murthas here at JW? Pay attention and you will see that we are Pro America anti jihadists here.

Posted by: tgusa [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 12, 2007 9:25 PM

Oh, and in addition to mountains, the other reason that Ethiopians appears to have survived despite being largely Christian is that evidently they are willing to fight when necessary.

God Bless Them.

Alert,
I browsed the 9-10 site, are they bloggers linked together? I can’t imagine any one would be interested in my vision of America much less words from me. At any rate I would sign up if I knew how. But I don’t think I am anywhere near the good bloggers of today. Heck we didn’t even have computers for most of my life. So yes, I thank God for this invention(the internet) every day.

Tgusa, I'm on here every day and very aware of my fellow commentors. You're all very bright, that's why I'm surprised nobody on this posting gave any credit to our military and instead seemed to criticize them. The Ethiopians weren't winning anything until we arrived. One soldier I know has gone from the horrors of Iraq, to the freezing cold of Afghanistan, and now to the slums of Somalia. I feel bad for what our troops endure and just want them to receive credit due.

It also explains how Nepal, despite being so close to Islamic empires in India, never fell to the Mohammedans, and remained staunchly Hindu, until recently, when they went secular. The Muslims were too busy raping the Indo-Gangetic plains and the Deccan plateau.

Back to the food - Alert & tgusa - is it the cooking, or is it the difference in the types of food used? Take cauliflowers for instance: in India, when I used to have it, it had a rich flavor, which I also experienced at the Ethiopian restaurant I cited above. However, when I eat elsewhere, I don't get it, and even at home, while it can be good, it still seems bland. One of my colleagues once complained to me that his wife, a Filipino, insisted on buying her groceries from the local Filipino store, and wondering on the difference between that, and normal (i.e. non ethnic) chains here. I'd think it's due to such differences.

Of course, I don't know how food in the US tasted in the 70's and 80's, but it seems to me that bio-engineering, while great for productivity and alleviating world hunger, has altered the taste of a lot of foods. Won't comment on whether for better or worse, since that's subjective.

Yep. You'll find a version of Green Mountain Boys wherever there is mountains. I think their acclimation to the mountains gives them an edge when any flatlanders come to get them.

It made food that can withstand shipping and long storage. This doesn't necessarily improve it's flavor.
Maybe the folks at the Filipino market grew their own.
Homegrown kicks butt!

I'm sure binLadin is shedding crockadile tears as he beds himself down beside his goats tonight.
The Ethiopian Infidels have scattered his holy warriors and his brand of Islam doesn't seem to sell well in Africa. Perhaps France would be a better site for his machinery of Death.

indonesia's muslim government is asking the U.N. to "deal with human rights violations in Myannmar". The "human rights" that are being demanded involve the basic right to wage jihad against infidels. muslims started the jihad over there some time back, and are now yelping at the hammering they got.

Dont mess with hillbillies, Ethiopian or otherwise!!

Of course our troops are there. Dont forget the lights are still on at the White House. How about the five naval battle groups off the coasts of the Middle East. Thank God for a strong global air power.
