Will this raise an eyebrow at any of the colleges and universities nationwide, which, attracted by the possible windfall of out-of-state tuition, have looked to places like Saudi Arabia for prospective students?

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22, 2007 — Mimicking the hijackers who executed the Sept. 11 attacks, insurgents reportedly tied to al Qaeda in Iraq considered using student visas to slip terrorists into the United States to orchestrate a new attack on American soil.
Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, recently testified that documents captured by coalition forces during a raid of a safe house believed to house Iraqi members of al Qaeda six months ago "revealed [AQI] was planning terrorist operations in the U.S."
At the time, Maples offered little additional insight into the possible terror plot. ABC News, however, has learned new details of what remains a classified incident that has been dealt with at the highest levels of government.
Sources tell ABC News that the plot may have involved moving between 10 and 20 suspects believed to be affiliated with al Qaeda in Iraq into the United States with student visas — the same method used by the 19 al Qaeda terrorists who struck American targets on Sept. 11.
U.S. officials now require universities to closely track foreign nationals who use student visas to study in the United States. University officials must report international students who fail to arrive on campus or miss class regularly.
In August, the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement alerted intelligence agencies and state and local law enforcement about 11 Egyptian students who had failed to report to their classes at Montana State University. The students were ultimately apprehended.
Still, despite the heightened precautions, some security analysts fear that skilled terrorists — handpicked because of their clean records and because they are carefully trained — could still slip through an academic setting.
The plot was discovered six months ago, roughly the same time that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed by coalition forces. Sources tell ABC News that the suspects involved in the effort to launch the U.S. attack were closely associated with Zarqawi.
The plan also came only months after Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda's No. 2, had requested that Zarqawi attempt an attack inside the United States.
"This appears to be the first hard evidence al Qaeda in Iraq was trying to attack us here at home," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, former chief counterterrorism adviser on the U.S. National Security Council.
The plan was uncovered in its early stages, and sources say there is no indication that the suspects made it into the United States. Officials also emphasize that there is no evidence of an imminent attack.
The hunt for suspects continues, however, and some fear that al Qaeda recruits in Iraq could be easily redirected.
"Anyone willing to go to Iraq to fight American troops is probably willing to try to come to the United States," Clarke said.

Hi All,
A consistent and sustained perusal of academic job openings will show you that there are numerous colleges in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States looking for faculty. A number of these have been recently created and are in a growth phase.
Why the dickens we have to let these "students" into the country is beyond reason. They can get their degrees while enjoying the benefits of their Sharia law.

Yea right. The same with Pear Harbor, and 911, oh we had no idea.
If the Gov. knows we are going to be hit they wont say a thing to us. But I guarantee they will be in their bunkers ahead of time.
People have been screaming for years to stop letting these Muslims into our country and to secure our southern border for national security reasons. So what does the Gov. do, turn it into a immigration issue and call everyone a racist.
This whole thing makes me sick. If our Gov. was conducting this war against Islam properly I would be 100% behind them, as it stands now the Govs learning curve has been dead flat for the last 30 years. In fact it seems to be slipping into negative territory.

I wish I had an answer-it seems both parties are in thrall of this ridiculous program. It should be evident to these politicians that having these "students" here is not a good idea, nor is it a good idea to train legit students in such things as nuclear technology that they can use back in the ummah for "peaceful purposes".

I like the student who wanted his Hazmat endorsement on his driving license, but he didn't want to learn how to back-up a truck....what an idiot.
I believe the 9-11 days are behind us, and I'm sure we're prepared for idiots trying to invade our country too. Take it from me, I married a woman from China, and the paperwork and inspections don't stop! I'm more married to the INS and the State Department then I am to her ?

Like the Guiness beer comercial, the plan is "brilliant". Unlike flight schools and trucker schools, once in college, nobody will be watching to see that they actually attend class. Moreover some students in our universities have access to nuclear and other sensitive technology and facilities. With the right major, they could do some serious damage
Two years ago my daughter, qualified for guaranteed admission to the University of California based on her academic achievements (GPA and class standing) in her California high school, but the state failed to meet their promise to admit her under their own criteria. Turns out that in the interest of state overspending and diversity, they admit a great number of foreign students amounting to approximately 15 to 20% of the student body.Even though their tuition is higher, the cost of their eduction is still subsidized.
What is even more interesting is that diversity really is a red herring, as over 40% of the student body of the UC system are Asian, while only about 8% of the state population is Asian.
While they are recruiting Saudi's, my daughter is denied guaranteed admission. While they are offering in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens, my daughter is denied her due.
Maybe there will be poetic justice and the Jihadists that the Regents will admit and professors will coddle, will end up biting the hand of their benefactors.

Saudi Arabia is paying for 10,000 scholarships to send their students to college in the US this year. And 10,000 to Canada.
How many parents are aware that their children are having daily dawa?
How many unsuspecting college girls are being groomed to be islamic converts and brides?
Don't you think Saudi Arabia has an "available female" shortage? What do you do with your young men when there are not enough females to go around because the older men have more than their share? Send them off somewhere or have a war.
And each one is doing his dawa duty. Proselytizing.

I keep repeating eventhough I am not a citizen of your country and in the past was a hopeful migrant wanting to migrate to a gret IT programmers job in USA/UK and help in progress of your country and to get a better quality of life and a great career for myself.
But now I dont plan to come to USA/UK ever.
The reason is simple and practical.
These Muslims will get/use student visa, work visa and all kinds of visa to come to your country and conduct terorrist activities.Then all brown skinned people will have to bear the backlash
I have brown skin and although I am Hindu(Indian) ,I dont blame the westerner for not bieng able to distinguish between us and the Islamic radicals.
Even though we are hindus, and have nothing to do ever with terrism ,our bad luck is we look like these m.....fing terorists. They have not only spoilt the name of their religion but also made things difficult for us.

he wrote a report stating there was absolutely no evidence of Iraqi involvement in the 9/11 attack.
....He must have been absent when Osama Bin Laden (of Al Qaeda fame) broadcast a video praising the hijackers and was seen personally sitting with them toasting the future attack.
....He must not have been paying attention to other Muslim clerics and leaders within the Iraqi leadership at the time praising the hijackers...
....He must not have been aware that Al Qaeda had training camps in Iraq which were both funded and equipped by Sadaam Hussein...
...He must have been absent when videos surfaced where the terrorists at these camps openly declared they intended to bring Death to America...
....He just simply turned a blind eye to the truth...a tactic we all must avoid....

Rajesh_singh , You sound like an intelligent person, you shouldn't let the terrorist win over you like that. America is a great melting pot of culture. Unfortunately the terrorist for the most part have had darker complexions. I'm sure there are terror minded light skinned folk plotting and conspiring. If you want to come to America to work. Especially if you have special skills that would be an attribute to our society, you should go through the necessary means. You sound like you'd be a good neighbor. Americans know this isn't about skin color, we're all humans.

Yes I agree,Americans know this is not about skin colour. And Becasue I have so many of my friends working in Silicon valley,I do get information from them that they are enjoying their job and life in USA.
But frankly speaking ,human nature is influenced by events.
And as of the events today
1) Muslims have started taking students visa and will soon become part of your society to strike later on. I read somwhere the Saudi Arabia is sponsoring 10,000 students to Canada. Ditto for USA .God knows how many so called students are there in America. An atack is bound to happen sooner or later. And I dont blame if Americans get angry and retaliate becasue that again would be human nature.
After 9/11, Sikhs from India were targetted and one was shot dead in Texas i think. Well i dont blame the man who shot him for mistaking him as someone from the Muslim community especially the Osama bin laden group ,because sikhs do wear a turban(towel on their head) and grow a beard.
To us, we can identify the differencee between the style of turban and style of the beard. But I really did not expect the American who shot him to be aware of the differnce becasue the differnce is minor.
Anyway what I am trying to say is , The action of these Muslim terorists will someday probably break the patience of some americans and make them retaliate and hey it takes just a bullet and one person driven by hate due to mis-identification to get me killed.

STOP GIVING VISA to MUSLIM STUDENTS,IMAMS and other suspicious characters.
Giving them VISA is like giving them permission to come here and set up a base here.
Later on when their Saudi and Pakistani masters ask them to do what the Koran say, they will blow themsleves up on a subway or a bus killing innnoncent people.
Giving them the visa is like giving them visa to kill and signing death warrant of few innoncent civilians.
As it is the will use the nuclear/cheimcal technology they learn here to create bombs and not for peace.
