Sunni-Shi'ite Jihad Update. Don't these people listen to Condoleeza Rice? By Kim Gamel for Associated Press:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide truck bomber struck a market in a predominantly Shiite area of Baghdad on Saturday, killing at least 121 people and wounding scores among the crowd buying food for evening meals, the most devastating strike in the capital in more than two months. The attacker was driving a truck carrying food when he detonated his explosives, destroying stores and stalls that had been set up in the busy outdoor Sadriyah market, police said.
The late-afternoon explosion was the latest in a series of attacks against mainly Shiite commercial targets in the capital. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but it appeared to be part of a bid by Sunni insurgents to provoke retaliatory violence and kill as many people as possible ahead of a planned U.S.-Iraqi security sweep.
Mortars reportedly struck predominantly Sunni areas hours after the attack.

Is it just my imagination, or are the arabs kicking ass in this saudi-iran proxy war? Not that I really care, mind you. Just an observation.

Good Lord. Shouldn't they start running out of Iraqis soon? What's the last guy standing going to do, with no-one to kill to grease his way to Paradise?

What I've learned from watching jihadwatch: 9.111 of the Koran: sacred duty to kill and be killed for Allah.
I guess this guy was just practising his religion. Can't blame him...

He must have needed the explosives to cook all the food.
Of course if we look at the DNC (meeting this weekend), the answer is to remove all US and coalition troops and then there will be no more violence!!! Don't we realize that these Sunni and Shia wouldn't be killing one another if we weren't there planning our surge? Good grief!!!

Let the Shi'a in Iraq defend themselves. They will do it, in the only way they know how. It will not be the way the Americans would do it, or will let them do it now. But it will be effective. It will be in a way that the Sunnis will understand -- after all, they share the same belief-system, and from that many important likenesses flow. Including endemic aggression, inability to compromise, meretriciousness with one's enemies, refusal to abide by solemn agreements, and so on. The Americans are incapable even of understanding, it seems, this world. They should get out, and derive not anguish but cold satisfaction from the spectacle of the Camp of Islam being weakened, incalculably weakened. The sectarian fight will spill over, will attract aid from co-religionists on each side, will cause many unafraid of the West at long last to beg that West for protection -- and that begging should be allowed, as well, to go on for a very long time. Let the Saudis pay for retaining control of the oilfields -- not "their" oilfields but the oilfields, in the Eastern Province populated by Shi'a. Pay well. We need to recoup about a half-trillion dollars for that Iraq misadventure.
Start recouping.

I know that anyone having been in combat knows that the landscape of that magnitude of death and carnage cannot be forgotten.
All of our MSM should run the most graphic images of this event. Blood, gore and guts.
THAT picture would absolutly be worth a 1000 words! That would jerk some heads out of the sand. What a wake up call that would be!

This is true!
Whenever an Islamic suicide bomber is about to complete his, "mission", they are instructed to make sure there is at least one underage female child within the bomb's killing zone. That way, she'll be one of his mindless virgins in Islamic Matrydom heaven.

Sorry, but a murder rate of 120/day doesn't have much effect on a population the size of Iraq's. That's an annual rate of ca. 44000. Iraq's natural population growth is ca. 700,000/yr. So that murder rate only very slightly slows down the population growth. They'll have to step it up a couple of notches before they begin to halt the population growth. Maybe once we leave, and the Shi'ites start pouring in from Iran, and the Sunnis from the Arabian countries, we'll begin to see some real action. So far, they're only sparring.
at February 3, 2007 1:59 PM
Mass murdering 120 Shiites is easy when your religion is built around a "prophet" who ordered assassinations and boasted that terror made him victorious. When your religion demands that you model your life after this "prophet" who is praised as the most perfect man who ever lived, thus worthy of emulation by all mankind. Even by non Muslims
This is Islam, the Master Race

Islam seems to be some sort of a perpetual misery producing machine. Muslims continuously create by themselves conditions which make life in Muslim countries unbearable and make them ultimately flee from their homelands - Palestine,Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan - you name it. Yet, once they have settled down somewhere - preferrebily in the West - they seem eager to start the same thing all over again, calling for the installation of the very same islamic societies they fled. Which will ultimatley produce the known unbearable conditions and make them move on again.. for that the cycle may start all over in a new place.
It's their religion that haunts them - and us.

How do you cause a Muslim cilvil war? Answer: Sell them an even number of guns.
How do you cause a Muslim massacre? Answer: Sell them an odd number of guns.

Very good post.
But a Muslim living in the West would reply that what they had in their home countries was not "True Islam", that it was a dictatorship and a puppet regime of the Americans. That we dont understand what the Koran is really all about. Etc etc

On the bright side, we now have 121 less muslim enemies to fight later. I have as much sympathy for the Shias as I do for the Sunnis, which is none. In the end, they are all the same. A muslim is a muslim.

Hugh,
The idea that the Shiites are going to beat up on the Sunnis once the Americans leave is widespread and seems obvious on one level.
But if they are so capable of defending themselves (using Geneva Convention-mocking tactics), how is it that they found themselves under the boot of the minority Sunnis for so long?

It is being reported by the press, that the reason for the attack, was the curfew. The CURFEW caused the attack. I have to wonder, what was the reason for the attacks before the curfew, AND, what is the reason for the curfew?

Sure they would. They've been killing each other long before the U.S. or modern Israel or the U.K. existed. Our "surge" has nothing to do with it.

If the DNC has any brains, they are not claiming that there will be no violence after our pullout. They should be claiming that there will be no more coalition casualties after our pullout. Who cares about Muslim-on-Muslim fighting. My give-a-d*mn is done broke, apparently it was badly damaged in the 9/11 attacks.
But no leading politician has the brains or the honesty to understand what our goals there should be, or how we could best exploit the situation to our advantage.

Shiite versus Sunni, it will never end. These people have no other worldview beyond their religous beliefs. To understand the people of the middle east, one must understand their religions. Everything is motivated by religion there.

Guide inside, Graphic pictures of dead Iraqis and weeping mothers will not have the result that you expect. All that will do is rouse the teary-eyed, psuedo-humanitarians to protest that the US caused this and we must stop it. Also, the antisemites who walk among us will claim that somehow if Israel gives up some more territory, it will stop.
Those of us who really, really want to see more disunion in Islam are looked down on by these haughty, smarter-than-all-the-rest liberals because we are not as gifted as they are in the grey matter department. If we were truly intelligent beings, we would see life just like they do. I have actually had a liberal arts major say something similar to my face. A bachelor's degree in engineering is not really an education.
I have become so cynical that I do not believe that there are any people who are truly altruistic. They use the suffering of others for their own self-gratification and to manipulate others. It's all about feeling good.

Yeah, it's like their holy day: Ashoura; they strike their heads for blood. Anyone knows this is surely painful; as if to say, they love pain; they also love death. So, when we see a weeping mother over her child who has been slain, is she really happy or is she really grieving?
Hum, surely is a weird religion ?

With all due respect, religion is a big part of the picture but an even larger part of the picture is Arabic culture. Arabic culture shapes their practice of islam and almost everything else. The shame-honor approach to life can be explained (although few westerners can understand) by a book, "The Closed Circle" by David Pryce Jones. Although it makes your head spin (as it does the Arabs too) I heartily recommend the book, although it gives little hope for a peaceful future.
at February 3, 2007 11:04 PM
Lame Cherry--My view is exactly the same!!
Pelayo--Your right of course. I was thinking the shock of it all would bring SOME out of this MSM induced coma they seem to be in. However, after the videos of 9/11 it seems our nation has gotten very drowsey.
Hey, I got an idea, lets call the Nanny and put all the Sunnies in one giant naughty chair and the Shit-ites in another for a looooong time out.---------------------------------------------------
Nah,they would just blow up each others chairs.
Calling themselves "the religion of peace" is the very pinnacle of hyprocracy! What a contradiction of terms! Why not just go ahead and call themselves "the religion of murder, rape, beheadings, and HATRED of every body else in the world". At least, we all would give them a grudging recognition for speaking the truth about themselves.
I know you all have noticed the complete lack of joy in their faces. All you see is rage and a seething, burning underlying hatred. Have you ever noticed that they are crazy when they look out their face! Ever see Al-sadr's face of hatred. Man, that sure compels me to join up. How about you??
LOL

Why are we there? To allow this, or to end the threat to us, our way of life? Allowing this in the hope that the "camp of islam" will be weaker is misplaced. Is it really weaker, or just a pause, a thinning of the ranks of the fighters? Islam stands intact, the faith is not scratched. The rock of mecca will still have it's bows, and the lost will be remembered as heros.
To do nothing and watch is to kick the can down the road, and we will be held to this focus, the reason for the killing, revenge will be the victor's scream, and all the while Iran is pushing forward with it's project, other groups of followers will reach for other weppons.
And the lost are replaced as fast as they fall.
How about..
Give Iraq a chance to end this civil war, or we should take control . Rip up the current law, replace it with a true law for a free people. Remove islam from the country, it had a chance to move forward, but islam only allows itself.
Level anything that will not allow the free to live, perhaps even give all of iraq over to the kurds, or how about grow the size of Israel with this land mass?
Will we loose there? Not if we want victory. Can we loose? If we don't want to win, we should leave. The dems and others want the troops home, to them the war (the U.S. started) is over.
I do not think they are close to being right, I hope others stay away from their camp.

Arabic culture is influenced by their religion. Is their culture producing suicide bombers or is it their religion? Their religion is what I find troubling.

Suicide bomber kills…
Maybe its time our media start being more specific when they report stories such as this one. Just who are these bombers? Most, if not all, are muslim, they’re Islamists and jihadists who kill in the name of their religion. I understand that they look upon these activities as some kind of honour. They should be called for what they are, murderous muslim terrorists, murderous Islamic terrorist, homicidal jihadist terrorist. When they go and kill themselves, they also make sure they murder a whole lot more people too. our definition of suicide is “one who kills himself”, somehow I don’t think that is what they have in mind , that instead they go with the intent to kill and maim as many people as possible, with a clear intention of what in our society is called first degree murder.
