Congress blocks aid to Palestinian militias

Finally, some sense from Washington. By Aaron Klein for WorldNetDaily.com, with thanks to D. C. Watson:

JERUSALEM – The U.S. Congress yesterday blocked the transfer of $86 million to security forces associated with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party following the objection of several lawmakers.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last month told reporters the U.S. is working with Fatah to create a unified Palestinian security force. The Bush administration had pledged $86.4 million to strengthen the Fatah forces, including Force 17, Abbas' security detail, which also serves as de facto police units in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

But yesterday, Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., who also heads the foreign appropriations subcommittee, informed the State Department the funding pledge required clarifications.

According to congressional sources, Lowey acted at the behest of her Republican colleague, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., the ranking minority member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Only committee chairmen are allowed to place information-related holds on foreign operations funding.

Ros-Lehtinen's office had raised a number of questions regarding Fatah militias and whether some of the money could be used to support terrorism.

The move comes after Hamas and Fatah last week signed a unity government that includes a clause for Hamas' 20,000-member Special Forces unit to be incorporated into the Palestinian government's main militias, which are controlled by Fatah. But according to congressional sources, Ros-Lehtinen's objections preceded the unity government deal by several weeks.

While the aid is being temporarily blocked, it wasn't immediately clear if U.S. weapons would continue to be transferred to Fatah. The U.S. has been regularly shipping convoys of weapons to Fatah security forces in Gaza and the West Bank.

WND reported the U.S. in recent weeks transferred 7,000 assault rifles and more than 1 million rounds of ammunition to Fatah militias.

Unconscionable.

Somewhat OT, but has anyone heard about the plane hijacking in the Canary Islands?

I just heard on Fox News that Spanish authorities report that an Air Mauretania passenger jet was hijacked while refueling in Western Sahara.

Apparently now the hijacker has been captured in the Canary Islands. There are reports of shooting victims on board--hopefully no fatalities.

I don't know for sure if this is a Jihad-related story. But given the location--Western Sahara, Spain--and the tactics, it does seem quite likely.

What is the difference between Iran sending weapons to Iraq and the US sending weapons to Palestine?

Posted by: MadMom [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 4:06 PM

The fact that a democrat put on the "hold" is the good news of the day. If we can get more democrats to seriously engage in war-time foreign policy, the country would be far better off.

What is the difference between Iran sending weapons to Iraq and the US sending weapons to Palestine?

Posted by: MadMom at February 15, 2007 04:06 PM

Quite right! There really is no difference between the two except, perhaps, that in the first case there is a well-thought out war plan (by Iran) whereas in the second case its based on an age-old crazy appeasement policy that is totally suicidal.

Posted by: Razdan [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 4:23 PM

Perhaps the only reason why this Democrat did this is because Bush wanted the money sent there. so if it makes sense to stop the money who cares who did it.

Posted by: ZenaWarriorPrincess [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 4:33 PM

A good start if it holds, intitiated by a Democrat no less.

Why stop there. Let's invest in the Hugh Fitzgerald philosophy of reducing all foreign monetary aid to absolute zero for any country that does not completely prescribe to US doctrine, not only in words but in actions as well.

How long before these countries line up to kiss our collective ass? Reward for the first ass-kissing?...a tribute of 1 US dollar, with similar increments for all subsequent capitulation, once again, in words and actions, to the US doctrine.

Is there any down-side to that?

Posted by: awake [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 4:34 PM

Wow how long did that take to figure out it's 2007 and they only realised? Are the Saudi's giving the USA money to keep it up all these years as the Muslims keep saying the jews are with the America? It's about time to think logically instead of political blindness, if they US helps them they may aswell be called terrorists of Palistine them selves.

"Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice . . . told reporters the U.S. is working with Fatah to create a unified Palestinian security force."

That "fatah," "PA," "PLO" security force has been tried before. M-16 rifles were provided, CIA taught them sniper tactics, which were used to shoot and kill Isareli Jews.

What these "Fatah" or whatever "securoty forces" need is to be disarmed. they never were used to stop Arabs from attacking Israel.

The Congress is doing what the people of the US want--not the Secy of State, the Arabists in the State Dept., nor the Arabs.

"...philosophy of reducing all foreign monetary aid to absolute zero for any country that does not completely prescribe to US doctrine, not only in words but in actions as well."
-- from a posting above

No, not aid only to countries that "completely prescribe [sic]to Us doctrine, not only in words but in actions as well," for that would leave out all kinds of states, including Bulgaria, and Italy, and Czechoslovakia, and Uruguay, and Thailand, and all kinds of places that deserve our support. The countries that are closest to the world view of the Americans are Australia, and Israel. The former does not need aid, the latter does, in order to defend itself against the long-running (endless) Lesser Jihad against it, but so do other countries. Aid is not always and everywhere wrong, but it should be limited to a very few recipients, countries that have proven themselves to be of real, not feigned, practical help against the Jihad.

That was in addition to tons of weaponry the CIA has been "training" the PLO and then Palestinian Authority for years with.
No one seems to understand that the State Department did this same thing with the American Indians. They gave them food and weapons to which Indians then murdered the civilians to which the "nasty" Army then had to go out and blow up the Indians.

The State Department arms enemies like the PA and then Congress wakes up and says NOT GOOD, but it is too late as now the neo Syrians and Philistines have all those weapons to retaliate on Americans in Judea and in America.

(Oh and in case people missed it, the State Department had sanctioned the repair of Iranian airliners by Americans.)
All makes perfect sense, help the enemy and keep them in power.

Well, this is a step in the right direction. There is just one small problem. What about the weapons and ammunition we already gave them? Just how do they propose we get it back? Cast a spell on them?

If Congress has to rein in ignorant, or crazed, or deeply malevolent members of the State Department, that cannot begin, even now, even more than five years after the attacks on the World Trade Center, after the knowledge we all now have of the campaigns of Da'wa and demographic conquest which threaten the continued existence of the legal and political institutions of the nation-states of Western Europe and certainly have unsettled and demoralized so many of their indigenous Infidels, after the colossal mistake of remaining in Iraq, after having scoured that country for weapons, in order to create a Light Unto the Muslim Nations that was the creation of those who had a fantasy about Islam, and a fantasy about "democracy," and a fantasy about "ordinary moms and dads in the Middle East" who just wanted, according to the Geaet Hallucinator, the unusually limited and unusually inflexible George Bush, "freedom" (the same "freedom" we presumably all want), after all this, we still have those who do not recognize that the whole "two-state solution" business is the kind of nonsense that could only be believed in by those who ignore Islam, or alternatively, do not care, very much, about whether Israel lives or dies, or perhaps secretly take pleasure in its being erased from the world, and have no conception of what that would do to Muslim appetites elsewhere, for other lands to conquer -- whetting and not sating them.

Powerful fools have to be constrained. If it takes Congress to do it, fine. And all the better if Congress is doing it because it, or members in it, have come to some intelligent comprehension of Islam -- and not the nonsense peddled by this Administration, or by many of this Administration's stupider opponents.

What I see is America feeding the monster with one hand and beating it with the other. It has been the same in Afganisthan. It is good business for the weapon factories anyway.

Posted by: Swissy [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 9:03 PM

While the stoppage of these funds to the PLO is a positive development, we should not lose sight of the hypocrisy Bush has demonstrated by treating Mahmoud Abbas as a "partner for peace" even though he denies the holocaust and wants to wipe Israel off the map like some other moslem president named Mahmoud you may have heard of.

Posted by: Madzionist [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 9:17 PM

But -- isn't this how we would maintain the divisions among the jihadis and fan the violence between their factions? By aiding the weaker side? Sure, efforts need to be undertaken to contain this violence lest it is directed against us kuffrs but isn't this arming of the weaker jihadis what e.g. Mr. Hugh Fitzgerald advocates? Else Hamas (in this instance) wipes out Fatah and continues with jihad?

Any aid, if at all ,given to the PA should be household and medical goods and food. No cash, no weapons!

I am ashamed to admit that I once believed George Bush was serious about going after terrorists wherever they might be. What a joke! Now he is arming Israel's avowed enemies, the Palestinian terrorists.

I know that things are not always what they appear to be and "diplomacy" works in mysterious, inexplicable ways, but this is simply unbelievable. Until the Palestinian "government", such as it is, recognizes Israel's right to exist, it should be ostracized, ignored, blacklisted, and denied any and all financial or material aid. The entire world has gone stark, raving mad and just when you think it couldn't possibly get any crazier, Condi has another brainstorm.

susanp: "I am ashamed to admit that I once believed George Bush was serious about going after terrorists wherever they might be. What a joke!"

Yeah - I had my own epiphany in the last few days over Bush's oft-repeated canard, "We're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here". That's pretty rich considering that Bush now wants to bring thousands of Iraqi's OVER HERE. If he were only considering bringing over the likes of the brothers who run the pro-American site, "Iraq the Model", I'd chip in personally. (How will those blatantly pro-American Sunni brothers ever possibly survive if we don't bring them here?) But it's pretty obvious that there will be no serious vetting process for those 7,000 (or more). Which probably means that tons of them will be pro Shia who will join the ranks of our disgruntled citizens in Dearborn and Minneapolis. Great. Thanks Bush! What a lie that turned out to be about fighting them over there! Who do you work for anyway, cause I'm starting to get the distinct feeling that it ain't the American people?

Posted by: Caroline [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 15, 2007 11:24 PM

P. S Hugh - Let me take this moment to bring up one HUGE flaw in your argument about letting all hell break loose in Muslims lands. The major thing is that for your basic argument to work (and I agree with it in theory completely), US policy would have to already come to an agreement about ceasing Muslim immigration. Apparently we're a long way from that, however. Which means that your advocacy for creating chaos in Muslim lands is quite mistaken in the short run because in the short run, it will merely have the opposite effect you intend - namely, bringing more Muslim asylum seekers, who can and will, unleash demographic jihad on our shores.

"And I will bless those who bless you,. And the one who curses you I will curse " Genesis (12:3)

Giving weapons, money and an on going support of those who are determined to see Israel drven into the sea falls into cursing Israel. Not to mention pressuring her to give up more land and submit to the folly of living "peacefully, side by side " with her enemies whose charter states she must be annihilated. The US has played fast and loose, two faced, forked tongued, and bipolar in her dealings with Israel. It will and is coming back to bite this nation. The curse is already upon the US, look around and it cannot be denied. Every US president froths at the mouth to be the One who finally brought "peace" to the middle east so he can claim it for his legacy, glory be, what an ego award that would be. Their own pride decieves and blinds them to the folly of the venture.

Posted by: benedick [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 16, 2007 12:48 AM

SalaciousCrumb refers to the Bible. I’m not a member of an organized Church but would like to offer a passage from Isaiah that I think of every time this Anna Nichole Smith (or pick your alternative) train-wreck is plastered over the airwaves. It may have something to do with current events, or maybe I’m losing my mind. Apologies for being off-topic.

Therefore the Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tingling with their feet. Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.

And that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon. The chains, the bracelets, and the mufflers, the bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earings, the rings and the toes jewels. The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantels, and the wimples, and the crisping pins. The glasses and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.

And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink… and burning instead of beauty.

I agree with Old Sarge in that"all foreign aid leaving this country should be voted on by the people that provide the money."

Now for an unrelatred thought. If we cannot stop the immigration of only Muslims into our country, perhahps we should call a halt to all immigration for one year (or more) and reopen our doors with new rules. Simplistic? Yes, but what are our alternatives?

Posted by: lokelau [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 16, 2007 1:55 AM

Caroline, don't forget the Somalis he dumped in Minneapolis and Pennsylvania (I think it was Pennsylvania, maybe New Jersey), or the 10,000 Saudi "exchange" students/terror cell organizers, or the Russian rejects of Turkic descent that nobody wanted and had no country to call their own. I don't remember where they were collectively dumped. Isn't it strange that Russia just had to get rid of these people? Why in the hell didn't they ship them to Turkey, their ancestral homeland? Why here? All of them whisked into the U.S. with generous welfare benefits, no strings attached.

I know some of the savage Somalis wound up in Tennessee and they are definitely NOT adjusting or making any attempt to adjust and assimilate. Of all the incongruous, tribal barbarians in the world, these animals are beneath the primitive level. They barely qualify as humans but of course, their culture is not in any way inferior to ours, it's probably superior. I have always yearned to live next door to a noble savage. Ted Kennedy only wants the best for the third world so I think the next shipload should dock at his Mass. estate. Kennebunkport needs a few thousand of them too, as well as Martha's Vineyard. Hillary and Bill and the Bush clan can bond with them while they're enjoying their summer retreat.

I have almost concluded that George Bush allows his trusted aides to conduct business as they see fit and while he calls the shots on some issues, he doesn't even pay attention to what they're doing. Or they have convinced him that the best way to "win the hearts and minds" of islamist totalitarians is by importing millions of them and exposing them to our wonderful people and culture. Then they'll love us and tell all their fellow muslims back home that we're a-ok. How is it possible that we, the American people, have absolutely no voice or control over who comes to our country and is gratuitously granted American citizenship? Why do they continue to import people who are incapable of appreciating the value and honor of American citizenship? Has it become that cheap, or completely worthless?

It is good--amazing that this Democrat congress did something right. It is so sickening to hear that Bush/Rice keep pandering to Abbas and co.

Someone wisely oberved that at least Hamas openly says they want to destroy Israel-while Abbas in the taqqiya-Arafat tradition believes in the pretense mode--say peace to the camera--call for jihad and intifada to their populace. Why do we choose to help any of these devils? We should destroy these bastards.

I had read recently (perhaps someone can confirm or refute) that Abbas wrote a major paper during his "education" denying the facts of the holocaust. Is that true?

What the he__ is wrong with Bush/Rice? Unconscionable is the exact right word Robert.

I am not going to give the details on the web, but I think there is more to this than meets the eye.
I think that there is a sub-plot so to speak and hope we all stay tuned to see how this plays out in a rather surprising way. Nuff said.

That 'terribly stupid' surge of troops or whatever you want to label it that has gotten so many people hot has already shown some results. Check out the death toll of "wasted" (quote; Obama) American lives since the crackdown in Baghdad.

86 million dollars! Why don't we just capitulate now and save ourselves some money? What igorance and treachery. What treasonous behavior. Send the adherents of the religion of peace millions to buy arms to kill Americans & our allies. All of the bums should be run out of DC on a rail.
Old Sarge, we do vote about money being sent out of our nation, in the form of voting for our elected representatives. That is why it is so important that the electorate be educated on the issues and the candidates. People don't take it seriously enough and elect the candidate with the whitest smile, the pretties wife or the one "giving away the farm".
Here we are spending billions fighting the enemy of our nation and yet subsidizing the bastards at the same time. Arafat would be proud of the PA leadership. They must sit back & just laugh at us. They must think it is absolutely hilarious (oops, that is awfully close to Hillary). The PA needs nothing more than a complete and total whipping by the IDF. That will solve most if not all of their problems.
Vote the bastards out, all of those who vote for spending our money to support our enemies.
