Yusuf Islam and Salman Rushdie

Yesterday I expressed skepticism at Yusuf Islam's claim that he never supported the death fatwa against Salman Rushdie. Jihad Watch reader Tex emailed me this late last night:

Mr. Islam is lying through his teeth. I saw him on at least two separate occasions around '89/90 openly advocating the death penalty against Rushdie.

The most telling was his appearance on the 'Geoffrey Robertson's Hypotheticals' program, a sort-of round table discussion/debate dealing with the fatwah.

Islam was asked specifically what he would do if he came upon Rushdie. He said he would telephone the ayatollah and make sure Rushdie's whereabouts were made known to people "who would do more damage to him than I could".

Tex is right: see this New York Times story from May 23, 1989: "Cat Stevens Gives Support To Call for Death of Rushdie," by Craig R. Whitney (thanks to all who sent this in):

LONDON, May 22 -- The musician known as Cat Stevens said in a British television program to be broadcast next week that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ''I would have hoped that it'd be the real thing.''

The singer, who adopted the name Yusuf Islam when he converted to Islam, made the remark during a panel discussion of British reactions to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's call for Mr. Rushdie to be killed for allegedly blaspheming Islam in his best-selling novel ''The Satanic Verses.'' He also said that if Mr. Rushdie turned up at his doorstep looking for help, ''I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like.''

''I'd try to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is,'' said Mr. Islam, who watched a preview of the program today and said in an interview that he stood by his comments.

Yes, whatever you want to call this creep, he is also a liar and a very dangerous bigot. A few years back, when he was barred from entering the US, a female British journalist whose name escapes me at the moment recalled meeting him in either Israel or the territorites a decade or more earlier, and found him in the company of young Muslim men preparing for suicide attacks on Israelis. Stevens/Y. Islam/Yusef was not only supporting the cause financially, he was also engaged in shaking down others.

Let's all get on the peace train now, eh?

Cat Stevens is just another example to show that ordinary Islam tends to turn even once gentle people into dangerous prevaricating zombies willing to murder or be an accomplice to murder.

Yet another radical tries to whitewash his radical ties. In yet another effort, Yusuf Islam the Wahhabi with the Wahhabi beard and the Wahhabi crocheted hat -- WHO REFUSED FOR YEARS TO HAVE ANY MUSIC (ONLY DRUMS) BEHIND HIS BAD VOICE ... FOLLOWING THE WAHHABI DICTUM AGAINST MUSIC -- has now finally released a real musical album for the first time in a couple of DECADES.

These lying creep is Wahhabi to the core, but now may want out. If so, he's probably dead, and it won't be anybody in the decadent West who'll have killed him. It'll be the radicals who feel "betrayed" ... yet another act of these poor, victimized people.

Nobody should think about letting Yusuf Islam back into the United States -- EVER. He's lost the right.

Given his celebrity status, critics of Islam should try and make his bare-faced mendacity as much as well known possible to the public. A Yusuf Islam is a liar campaign ought to be launched and persisted with - he could hardly sue anyone, after all .

The idea that the adherents of one religion are habitual liars, something sanctioned and, indeed, encouraged, by the ethical system of that religion, is something people find difficult to believe.

Because of his relatively high profile in popular culture, as well as his pose as a spiritual kind of guy, drawing attention to his dishonesty would be an excellent example for displaying this ugly trait of Mohammedanism.

Question: "How do you know if a Muslim is lying?"

Answer: "His lips are moving."

sigh i really used to LIKE this guy too before he converted. "where do the children play" used to be one of my favorite songs. But now, where do they play indeed since Islamic militants have plans even now to take over US schools in the spirit of Beslan. where will those children play, Cat? i mean Yusuf? Just goes to show how Islam can turn even a peacenik like Cat into a murderous hater

Yeah, I thought he was a true spirit when I was growing up, I guess senility has set in on his part, because it just doesn't sound like it's really Cat Stevens ?

Richard Thompson of fairport convention etc..is another hippie wingnut who got hypnotised by a few Sufi poets and tesalated tiles in the 70's.

It's what happens when you let bad intelects loose on spiritual concerns.
They seem to be immune to islamic history and it's bloody conquests.
They are so selective and subjective I could never take there art seriously.

A true Artist should be objective and an impartial observer and only report.
It is the artists job to hold up a mirror to the world not to join groups sects and cults.

I would look into cat steven's professional position around the time of his conversion.
Was he about to be dropped by his record label?
Was there any legal and financial troubles?
There usually is..even at the top level the music buisness can be a ferocious battle of wills and I suspect he just lost his will felt bereft and empty and the spiritual vacuum was filled with islam as it's predetory fashion is likely to do.

Just my take.
