An update on this story. "Official leading polio drive killed," by Masood Khan for the Daily Times:
KHAR: A senior government official was killed on Friday when a remote-controlled roadside bomb exploded in Salarzai, a village about 50 kilometres northeast of Khar, the main town in Bajur Agency, when he was returning from a jirga (tribal council) to convince people to immunise their children against polio, local administration officials said.
The blast killed Dr Abdul Ghani Khan, chief surgeon at the main government hospital in Bajur, at the scene and injured three others in his car, the officials said. One of the injured is critical, they added. “The surgeon was killed and three others injured in the blast in the Salarzai area at 3:30pm.”
Dr Amir Khan, medical superintendent (MS) at Khar District Headquarters Hospital, said that residents of Mullah Said Banda in the Salarzai area had earlier refused to get their children vaccinated against polio and added that Dr Ghani was visiting the area to allay misperceptions about the vaccination. “The locals had also warned polio teams against visiting the area,” the MS said.
Paramedic Hazrat Jamal, who is one of the three injured in the explosion, said that the residents of Mullah Said Banda were against the polio campaign. “As soon as we reached there, an armed prayer leader warned us against visiting the area. Some locals said: ‘On one hand, our enemy (a reference to the United States) is bombing us for no reason while on the other hand you are coming here disguised as polio campaigners to spread vulgarity,” he told Daily Times at the hospital.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, but local tribal militants are suspected to be behind the attack. The Friday’s attack is the second since February 5 when a pro-government elder was killed in a similar fashion.

If it was not for the fact that Polio can spread I would say "leave Pakistan alone". Let them deal with their child growing up with polio.

It can spread, but it can only spread here if we continue to let them come here. We shouldn't. Let them serve as the new "Light Unto the Islamic Nations" project. Let them show everyone the benefits of sharia.

"an armed prayer leader"??
I thought prayer, when properly delivered, would eliminate the need for firearms.
This indicates there is no faith resident in their prayers as they believe firearms and firearms alone are necessary to further their "cause".
Like the whole Anna Nicole "affair", and what Islam does, is, and believes, AS WRITTEN AS A FICTIONAL SCRIPT, would never be believed! way too outlandish to be believed, people would say.
This bespeaks of an almost total lack of education as most peoples and nations know what polio is and what the Salk vaccine does.

I agree with you.
Frankly I dont want to see a single Muslim emigrating to the USA, Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand. They are nothing but problems due to Islamic ideology. In Europe, they are always bottom of the pile in terms of integration with the host community - no wonder their children dont do well. Evenif they are moderate (whatever that means), it does not mean that their children will be.
Our big problem is convincing the liberals to "see" this.

The CIA should spread the rumor that polio and other vaccines are poisoned by the Israelis and the Americans. It's great to see these evil savages self-destruct.

Polio is transmitted through a virus in fecal matter (aka shit). Even in the US where sanitary conditions are as good as can be, polio in 1952 infected more than 60,000 people (mostly children). My mother would not allow me to go to a public swimming pool. When I got the Salk vaccine, I was liberated. President Franklin Roosevelt nearly died from it, and it left him paralyzed. The common name back then was infantile paralysis.
Considering sanitary conditions in Muslimdom, polio should spread like a California brush fire.
Should we complain, get all teary-eyed, wring our hands, damand something be done? I know what to do.

This may be occurring in Pakistan but this effects us. I'm too young to remember anything about Polio epidemics but I still had to take the vaccine as a child. Why? Because polio still exists in the world. It came very close to going the way of smallpox but it's going to go through a resurgence, all thanks to Islam and the paranoia it causes.

Every time there is a natural disaster in an Islamic country, we pour money, personnel, and materials in there. When a polio epidemic hits in Pakistan, there will be hand-wringing and collections. Americans will open their hearts and bank accounts again.
It is preferable to let nature take its course in these Islamic lands--whether dealing with natural disasters or diseases caused by Islamic idiocy.

What about muslims in Britain who go back and forth to Pakistan, and who then attend public swimming pools?

OK so does this mean that millions of Muslims will be cripples in the next generation incapable of carrying out jihad and will be such a burden on Muslim cultures that those governments will have to spend money on healthcare finally instead of bombs?
Sounds like a better 10 year solution than the 50 year war the War College attributed this bleeding out.
Never considered Muslims were there worst enemy in defeating jihad.

"It can spread, but it can only spread here if we continue to let them come here."
Excuse me.
When Muslims come to our country and enroll their kids into our public school system, they have to have their kids vaccinated. I moved from one state to the one I'm presently in and got nothing but grief from my kids' public school because of problems with their shot records. They would not let my kids enroll in school until everything was straightened out. So how are Muslims getting into our country's schools without being vaccinated?

Well, this is stupid. How is this Jihad or Islamic? I read the whole article and I don't see anyone mentioning that this person was killed because of Islam? Are you just blaming random bombings killings on Islam as well? If this is the case I'm sure I can find more cases of Christian violence than you can of Islam and more brutal ones as well. I can start with Hitler and go on to mention the weird American and British serial killers that have become popular due to movies and books even though the killings weren't motivated by religion they still followed it and so why not put the blame on the religion? Which is what you're doing.
"In Europe, they are always bottom of the pile in terms of integration with the host community - no wonder their children dont do well"
I think you need to go back and look at some of the contributions muslims have made in the modern world and also take a look at a list of western muslims and see if they are doing well or not. You'll be surprised.
And again, let me mention this story has nothing to do with religion. There is nothing in Islam about getting vaccinated against Polio. If someone killed a doctor in some backward village stop blaming it on the religion. People are killed all over the world. No one goes around blaming the religion for any of these murders. Why do it here? It makes no sense.
As for why this person was killed. Here is the reason :
Pakistan clerics say polio vaccine is US plot
News – The parents of 24,000 children in northern Pakistan refused to allow health workers to administer polio vaccinations last month, mostly due to rumours that the harmless vaccine was an American plot to sterilise innocent Muslim children. The disinformation has caused a sharp jump in polio cases in Pakistan.
The aid workers are going around vaccinated people in villages and most of these people are uneducated and when a rumor, as crazy as it is, they are going to react. As would the uneducated people of any country. The polio vaccination in cities with educated people carries on without any problems. Hopefully by educated people about the disease and about the vaccination we will be able to rid Pakistan of Polio soon.

Polio doesn't worry me so much because most of us are vaccinated against it. But I wonder about Smallpox. I'm old enough to have been vaccinated back in the seventies, and the last "official case" was in 1977...in Somalia...but if there should ever be a resurgence of that, we'd be in trouble. Even those of us who were vaccinated have probably outgrown our resistance.
@Isabellathecrusader: It is possible to conscientiously object to vaccinations - parents have to fill out a special form so the district knows which kids aren't vaccinated.(unless they've changed that law)

Awais, the reason that this is seen as a religious (Muslim) problem is that it is the Muslim (religious) leadership spreading this falsehood. It is a religious problem because Islamic preachers, or clerics or whatever these witchdoctors are called, rule every aspect of a Muslim's life. Their pronouncements are not to be questioned. It is a Muslim problem.
In the US in the 1950s there was a movement against flouridation of water based on the premise that it was a communist plot. That falsehood was not spread by religious leadership.

Well, this is stupid. How is this Jihad or Islamic?
Awais,
Go back and read the ORIGINAL story. Here are just a few excerpts. Educate YOURSELF.
1. The parents of 24,000 children in northern Pakistan refused to allow health workers to administer polio vaccinations last month, mostly due to rumours that the harmless vaccine was an American plot to sterilise innocent Muslim children.
The disinformation - spread by extremist clerics using mosque loudspeakers and illegal radio stations, and by word of mouth - has caused a sharp jump in polio cases in Pakistan and hit global efforts to eradicate the debilitating disease.
---- Why are clerics denouncing vaccinations if this is NOT an Islamic issue? They're the ones putting it in religious terms. It's innocent "Muslim" children, not "Pakistani" children.
2. The disease is concentrated in North-West Frontier Province, where 60% of the refusals were attributed to "religious reasons".
---- What do you think is meant by "religious reasons"? Talk about STUPID.
3. In nearby Swat Valley, a young firebrand cleric, Maulana Fazlullah, denounced the polio campaign through a local FM radio station.
---- See number 1.
4. Some linked the attack to a fatwa issued in Dara Adam Khel, a lawless town famous for its gunsmiths, just before Christmas. A cleric named Mufti Khalid Shah declared a fatwa on employees of the UN, WHO and all other foreign organisations. "Killing their employees is in line with the teachings of jihad in Islam," said a notice.
---- Killing UN employees is in line with the teachings of jihad in Islam. THERE'S YOUR JIHAD FOR YOU.

You are completely right. Many people say that africa is in a much worse state now precisely because of the decades of recieving economic aid.
And many here have stated the fact that the middle east relies on western expertise for its technology. If we ceased to provide it there countries would revert back to...you guessed it, the 7th century.
Im reading a book called 'The meaning of the 21st century' by James Martin and he explains that many of the so called 'developing nations' are in fact 'failed states' in that they will never recover from the condition they are in.
We should withdraw all our armed forces from the middle east, dont give them any valid excuse to hate us. And if they still want us dead then hopfully the liberal/lefties will see islam is the problem. Close all our borders to them and outlaw islam.

But I do like the suggestiion that all western medicines should be withheld so as to prevent future jihadi attacks, cause these trogs will be too sick to fight.

The first time I heard about this idiocy was about ten years ago in Nigeria. The culture and region have little in common with Pakistan except for one thing--Islam.
It was just the same--rumors sprang up about the Polio vaccines, and were spread mainly through the Mosques. The exact nature of the rumors varied, including the claim that the vaccinations included pork products, that the vaccinations caused AIDS, and most commonly, that the vaccinations sterilized innocent Muslim children.
Likewise, the exact plotters varied--mostly the UN, the US or the "Zionists".
Also identically, health workers were physically threatened by Islamic mobs. Many health-care charities had to pull out of certain villages, and finally whole regions.
You can imagine what happened. There has been an ugly resurgence of this--by now--easily cured disease. At first the disease spread mostly to Muslim kids, but later started showing up in primarily Animist areas too remote to have been visited by health care workers. What a needless waste!
Most Christian kids in Nigeria are fine, because their parents accepted the vaccinations.
Before this, the World Health Organization was hoping that Polio could be conquered world-wide in a generation, just like Smallpox before it. That this willful ignorance has spread to Pakistan does no surprise me, but it is depressing and alarming.

Dear Pureevil,
So you are our judge now and what you think must be obviously correct. At least you think so. We, the regular posters of JW, are saying these things which you find "disgusting" because we have been studying about islam and muslims for a long time now. Most of us have read the koran, and most of us have interacted with muslims for years. We have also read the 1400 years of jihad history, we have read about genocides that were committed in the name of islam, jihad and the prophet. We know that entire cultures were wiped out in the name of islam, jihad and the prophet. We have also seen pictures, whole lots of them, of human beings that were ripped apart by islamic mobs. Of women and children who were raped, sodomized and then hacked to death. We have seen piles of bodies of infidels. We have read accounts written by muslim historians themselves who mention "hills of bodies of infidels", "mountains of skulls of infidels" and "rivers of blood". We know that this took place in Mesopotamia, Persia, Byzantium, Europe, India, and Africa. We know that hundreds of millions were killed by muslims over the past 14 centuries and it has not stopped even now. We know that at least 3 genocides of the twentieth century were commited by muslims involving Armenians (early twentieth century), Hindus of West Punjab (mid twentieth century), and the natives of Africa (late twentieth century). In Africa, in Kosovo, in Kashmir and even where we live, we see jihad violence taking place. We see our societies slowly turning islamic and we see our states falling in the near future thanks to the 4 wives and 5 children/wife motto of the muslims. We, the regular posters, know islam for what it is, know the fate our countries face if this ideology is not stopped, know that only extreme solutions can ensure the survival of Civilization as we know and respect and love it. Most of us here won't harm a fly, though a muslim is another matter to us altogether due to our knowledge of jihad history. That is why Sir, sometimes we come across as "disgusting" and even "bigoted". You are cordially invited to study the jihad history for yourself. There are lots of sites where you can do so, I do not insist that you educate yourself on JW. It would take you about a couple of months to come to your own conclusions. Looking forward to hearing from you then.

@allat
Thanks for the two interesting links about islamic "inventions".
In the first link the - obviously - Muslim author seems to follow Mohammed's example and declares as islamic whatever he seems to like (like Mmo didn't bother to declare Abraham and Jesus as muslim prophets .. both having lived hundreds of years before him). I suppose that he truely thinks that by submitting the original inventors or their heirs to islam their inventions become automatically islamic.
Regarding the scientific history of a religion and society that existed for 1400 years, took over the most savvient populations of its time - the Byzntines, Persians and Indians and now composes nearly a fifth of world population it's a very very sad record. (Even if we'd accept all muslim claimed inventions - soap seems to be the only justified one by the way).
Look at today's patents f.e. I guess that probably already a state like Finland with roughly 4 million inhabitants produces more scientific output than the whole muslim society with 1,2 billion muslims..
Anyone ever thought that it might simply be so because of their religion - regarding the qu'ran as the only and ultimate revelation??
Here's what supposedly happened to the library of Alexandria, the place where Egypts,Greeks and Romans had stored all the knowledge of their times.
'The legend has it that the caliph Umar posed to commander Amr bin al 'Ass the following dilemma: "Touching the books you mention, if what is written in them agrees with the Book of God, they are not required; if it disagrees, they are not desired. Destroy them therefore." '
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Alexandria
Whether true or not - the fact is that the islamic world didn't make any invention worth its name- for 1400 long years. Compass, gunpowder, paper,
algebra, automobile, computer, telefone, television - whatever technology or science comes to your mind, the possibility it has been invented by an Arab comes to a close 0%. In some, mainly military ones they were great users yet..
at February 18, 2007 4:18 AM
Hey now, c'mon guys, aren't you being too hard on Awais. Aren't we, for example, forgetting the greatest invention of muslims, i.e. the use of taqiya in the art of warfare. Islam has got to be the most advanced warrior creed in history wherein its adherents have been so thoroughly brainwashed and so completely conditioned to mindlessly follow authority for the sake of the ummah. Which other religion can boast of so routinely using their own children as cannon-feed for holy warfare?

Vaccines are a gift to mankind that have saved millions from crippling disease, disfigurement and death. So its not surprising that Muslims would view lifesaving vaccines as something "evil".Muslims are so ignorant and arrogant its hard to feel sorry for them anymore.
In Nigeria when the Muslims refused the Polio vaccine the disease spread among the "umma" crippling several Muslim children. In contrast, non-Muslim Nigerian children who took the vaccine were not infected with the disease. Other Nigerian Muslims carried the disease on their pilgrimage during the Hajj infecting still more members of the "umma".Scientists know the disease came from Nigeria because of the genetic strain carried by those who were infected. My parents loved me enough to vaccinate me from polio and I will vaccinate my children. If infidels continue to be vaccinate then the disease will spread only among the Muslims.Let them reap what they sow.

Not sure about the connection between the polio vaccine and vulgarity. When I got the shot in third grade, I think they doctors were handing out lollipops to assuage our third-grade grief. But perhaps I have misremembered. Perhaps they were handing out pictures of Britney Spears, or tapes of Howard Stern, or their equivalent in those innocent, easily-shockable, antediluvian days.

'.....That is correct..Disinformation spread by crazed, bearded, finger pointing, ignorant Islamic clerics...These are the same clerics teaching and training the fighters in the region...These are the same clerics who dictate who, when, and where to attack....
....It is these same crazed, bearded, finger pointing, ignorant Islamic clerics who share a great deal of the responsibility for the deaths of innocent hard working people, they are also the same crazed, bearded, finger pointing, ignorant Islamic clerics who are undeniably responsible for children who contract the polio virus...and suffer because of it...
It is Islam stupid....

"Thanks for the two interesting links about islamic "inventions"."
Yeah, the 1st link was hilarous.
Oh, yeah, I know, I know. The Invenntions came from the Ancient Egyptians (who know frm where before than, could be Atlan) - the Ancient Greeks and Hind, and then the Chin.
I was mocking the islamics - they don't deserve respect, have no sense of humor and are thin skinned. And I say, laugh at their expense whenever you can.
