Chicago cousins were seeking "training in jihad"

Chicago Jihad Update. "Cousins sought `training in Jihad,' prosecutors say," by Jeff Coen in the Chicago Tribune, via the KRT Wire, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:

CHICAGO - Two Chicago-area cousins linked to a terrorism conspiracy last week traveled to Egypt in 2004 and planned to head to Pakistan for military training, federal prosecutors told a judge Monday.

Zubair A. Ahmed, 27, and Khaleel Ahmed, 26, were seeking "training in Jihad," prosecutors said during a detention hearing on whether Khaleel Ahmed should be kept in custody as he is transferred to Ohio to face the charges.

The trip was not a vacation as the Ahmeds have maintained, Assistant U.S. Attorney Vickie Peters said.

"It was intended as the first stop of a trip that would land him on the battlefield of Iraq fighting U.S. servicemen," Peters told U.S. Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown.

As one of the posters here always says: BAN MUSLIM IMMIGRATION NOW!

It's the honest to God truth-it needs to be done.

I do not envision Pakistan a tourist destination....certainly not on my list of places I want to see...

...these yo-yos should have gone directly to Iran for immediate transportation to the "front," they would have been welcomed, armed, and transported directly to Iraq....

...Ban Muslim Immigration now...

From article:
“Khaleel Ahmed's defense attorney, Brian Sieve, argued his client is NOT A DANGER, is employed and has been living with his family. Ahmed has NO CRIMINAL HISTORY and NO USE OF DRUGS in his past, Sieve said.

The trip to Egypt allegedly took place more than two years ago, and the government did not see any urgency to arrest him, he said. Instead the government is relying on the "emotional appeal of the charges" to detain Ahmed now, Sieve said.

"Mr. Khaleel Ahmed is barely mentioned in the indictment and certainly is NOT A KEY PLAYER in the conspiracy," he told the judge.”
About the attorney:

Brian D. Sieve (Other Distinctions)
Named an "Illinois Super Lawyer" in intellectual property law for 2005 by Chicago magazine.

Named an Illinois "Leading Lawyer" in 2004 (awarded to fewer than five percent of Illinois attorneys).

There is quite a trend for these “Jihadists in training” that they always retain the most reputable and costly defense attorneys where ever they are. The same can be said for the terrorist in MO that was preparing for ‘war’:

Tried to purchase 30 hand grenades for $15,000
He is free on $50,000 bond
He has retained defense attorney Scott Rosenblum whom many have dubbed the area's top criminal defense attorney (He doesn't come cheap)

I really need to get a job at a gas station like this guy. I guess those high gas revenues go right into the pockets of the gas station attendants!

The names and affiliations of their financiers need to be made public. NOT A DANGER, my *$$!

I think this is indicative of a major weakness in the strategy. These type of cases don't belong in civil court.

In general, muslim extremists in the US should not be allowed to get off on videos of Humvees getting blown up, issuing death threats to Hirsi Ali, spewing anti-infidel hate. That is not a freedom of speecy, freedom of assembly issue, because of the context. We are at war with an organization even now using combatants out of uniform to kill US citizens, and the above activity demonstrate both loyalty to this organization and intent to aid or carry out such attacks. These people are jihadis massing before an opportunity to strike, so they need to be neutralized before they do so.

True, we can't really control most of what goes on in Pakistan. But we can certainly control what goes on in the US. That Hirsi Ali should be worried about some muslim in the US issuing a death threat is totally @ssbackwards. Instead, that US muslim issuing the death threat should be worried about the US army kicking down his door and neutralizing him as a threat to Hirsi Ali. Because, in this context a death threat is not just a death threat, but it flags the guy as an enemy combatant, and he needs to be neutralized before he hurts somebody.

Because once the enemy lands combatants in your country looking to kill your people, you cannot neutralize the combatants while upholding their "constitutional rights". Whether the enemy slips the combatants in through visas, or recruits them from traitorous individuals in the country is irrelevant. The end effect is that your country has now become a battlefield, and the armed forces need to be allowed to neutralize the enemy forces militarily. The US Supreme Court delusion that an enemy covertly landing out of uniform combatants in the American homeland somehow succeds in endowing these combatants with constitutional rights, and thereby immunity form US military action, or that a US citizen that renounces his US citizenship by joining the enemy in the war against US retains his constitutional rights, is ridiculous.

The governmennt needs to stop worrying about all those social programe, but get back to the basic things a government is supposed to do; securing borders and protecting the people from enemies, foreign and domestic.

XRDC, Thanks for the attorney background. Kirklend & Ellis is a $$$$ firm. Either someone with deep pockets is bankrolling the defense. It would be interesting to find out who.

It still begs the question, Why is in intellectual property attorney and former lead counsel for Motorola Corporation doing criminal defense work?

All persons traveling to nations that sponsor terrorism or Muslim majority countries must be monitored on a case by case basis. Not one individual must escape scrutiny for why and when they travel to such places. If such a policy curtails tourism to Egypt or Jordan and other supposed "allies" of America, I can only say this: My heart pumps piss.
