How did they find out? Probably through contact with people who work with the Americans -- in other words, this is likely another indication of the fact that there is no firewall within Muslim communities between jihadists and peaceful Muslims. Jihadists have never been expelled from Islamic communities, but rather move freely within them. And so things like this are virtually impossible to prevent.
An update on this story from AFP, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
Islamabad - A suicide attack at an Afghan air base where US vice-president Dick Cheney was staying shows that the Taliban and al-Qaeda have penetrated local intelligence agencies, analysts and officials said. The blast early on Tuesday at Bagram air base near Kabul also highlights the increasing sophistication of the extremist outfits as they prepare for a feared spring offensive against Western troops, they said.
[...]
"This shows how much the militants have penetrated the intelligence of the Afghan security forces. It is a most shocking attack," retired Pakistani general turned analyst Talat Masood told AFP.
Visit unannounced
Cheney's visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan were unannounced and shrouded in even tighter secrecy than when US President George W Bush travelled to the two countries in March 2006.
[...]
A senior Pakistani counter-terrorism official said the "sophisticated" attack "indicates the militants' preparedness and the quality of their intelligence collection in the run-up to the so-called spring offensive".
He added: "They must have had information (a) few days before that the US vice-president would be in town and stay at Bagram. This is not something you can plan with 12 hours notice."

Besides the obvious that Pakistani Intelligence and Muslim operatives shared information which caused this attack. There are others just as culpable in this all across Europe and inside America.
It is time with the attempted assassination Vice President Dick Cheney, 23 people murdered and our ambassador to Sri Lanka being wounded in an attack today for the list of accomplices to be made public who helped these al Qaeda terrorists according to the laws of every nation in the world.
David Letterman of CBS, the comedian has gone out of his way to "do his part" in aiding leftist democrats by mocking President Bush nightly in order to weaken him to change policy which aids terrorists.
Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Ted Koppel, Charlie Gibson, Seymour Hersh, CNN, PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS, Newsweek, Time all have either been engaged in coup plots from Rathergate, Abu Gahrib, Plamegate to the current whisper campaign of "Iran Contra" which has weakened the war effort, the President and emboldened the Taliban and al Qaeda to carry out attacks which murdered people today.
John Stewart for his mocking President Bush, Elvis Costello for kicking a George Bush doll across the floor on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, Barbara Striesand for her rants, George Clooney for his idiot meanderings, Al Franken for his calls for assassination of American leaders all are guilty in aiding the terrorists who murdered 23 people today.
George Soros for his comments that America is run by Nazi's, Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame for their mini coup, the Rockefeller CFR with their implanted flunkies in "think tanks" spreading Iraq failure propaganda in order to gain another Saddam so they can syphon money in the billions again to the host of Republicans in the House and Senate who joined Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in their Cindy Sheehan aid the terrorist agenda are all guilty of the 23 dead people today.
Jeff Rense, Alex Jones, Steve Quayle, Keith Olberman in their anarchist profit my show, but spread the Capitol Hill Blue lies of the left are all guilty of tearing down the United States government with their "neocon" racism and spreading the idiocy that George Bush is a bigger threat than terrorists.....are all guilty of the murder of 23 people today.
Finally looking in the mirror, the Americans who bought the Dixie Chics music, went to the Hollywood films, watched the Ugly Betty program, watched the main stream media, voted for those Democrats which al Qaeda said was a victory for them over President Bush all are guilty today in world laws of aiding the enemies of the United States which murdered 23 people in Afghanistan, the attempted assassination of the Vice President of the United States and the ambassador to Sri Lanka.
All the above abandoned the United States, President Bush and have caused not just the murder of 23 people in Afghanistan, but the last 2800 dead US service people and the tens of thousand wounded.
It is no different than if you told a stranger that your neighbor was bad, mocked them and said they deserved to die and the stranger went over and murdered them.
The police would arrest you.....so when are the Patrick Fitzgerald indictments coming down for all of the above?

Security Ops had to have been given to the islamists; what other choice do we have?
After all real Americans don't want the job and are too damn stupid; right Dick?
Well, well, well, the chickens have come home to roost; maybe giving CAIR access to all the nations security details wasn't the smartest thing to do after all.
Dick heard a loud "boom;" and how many Americans were murdered exactly?

I doubt even this treachery will finally get it through the Bush administration's skull that Pakistan is not our friend.
There can be only one culprit responsible for this serious and telling security breach. Pakistan's ISI is a nexus of terrorist activity. Their continued incursions on India should have resulted in Pakistan being a smoking hole in the ground long ago. This latest incident should serve as final notice that Musharraf must dismantle this nest of terrorist vermin. Unfortunately, Musharraf's fortunes are far too closely tied to supportive military personnel who staff the ISI.
Pakistan has long been one of the most significant players in world terrorism. Their creation and initial support of the Taleban assisted al Qaeda's plots against the United States, including 9-11. There will come a time when we must enter Pakistan and confiscate its nuclear arsenal. Even a single Islamic country possessing atomic weapons is far too many.

What was that the Administration was telling us, about the Religion of Peace(tm)? That Noble Religion? Would Bush and Cheney, based on their deep understanding of the peacefulness of Islam, care to walk around, sans Secret Service, in the neighborhoods of Baghdad? Would they care to take a self-guided tour of Mecca? How about Pakistan? And I hear southern Thailand is very beautiful this time of year. (remember, according to the Administration, these are all our "staunch allies" in the Global War on Terror). Yes, Bush and Cheney (maybe Condi could tag along) could be strolling carefree, no escorts needed, on the beaches and streets, knowing that they are completely safe, surrounded by those peaceful practitioners of the Religion of Peace(tm); surrounded by their staunch allies.

Islamic jihad does not revolve around American liberal or conservative opinions or TV shows or American foreign policy, this site should have made that fact very clear, unless you have not been paying attention.

Take your pick who told these guys. I'm sure it could be anyone from Pakistani Intelligence, Afghan Allies, Saudi Princes, or someone from within the political power base in Washington.
The point here is the US needs to wake up and realize they have no friends in Islam, bottom line. I'm sure many are tired of reading the same thing over and over again, but stop supporting those who want you dead. It's really that simple.

So what's the difference between a friendly muslim and a terrorist? Answer: there is none. The friendly muslim is simply one who has yet to obey the commands in the qu'ran. Why are we wasting our time? You can't democratize a muslim because his beliefs will not allow a non-Sharia government. Let's face it. It is war. They declared such on us to the peril of their own people. It is time for the peril. Not one US soldier KIA is worth letting these demons continue to avoid the consequences of attacking the US of A. Were the citizens of Germany spared? Japan? It is time to annihilate and subjugate. These people do not deserve to be trusted because their values and world view are not only different, but they are CLEARLY EVIL. It is time for the full-court press. Time to go after the safe-havens in Pakistan and level each and every single village where a single terrorist is even rumored to have entered. Who cares if Pakistan objects...they can be next. Why are we NOT going for the absolute kill? If a terrorist is found in the village, pull back and flatten the village. Remember, it is the muslims who attacked us. Why should non-muslims be the only ones to not be protected? Let Osama and all the militant muslims answer to the crying widows. Maybe the message will get out that you don't let a terrorist in your village because your village will be wiped out. Maybe we don't work with any muslims in Afghanistan since we can't trust any of them, instead, we go where we want and if attacked call in the B-52's to make a new parking lot....or are we just going to let them kill our troops????

"My thinking is going to the brink here... but I am thinking that when a very, high politician is killed by these freaks - maybe our government will wake up."
Bingo, s_sgt7! Not even a "dirty bomb" attack on American soil that killed 1,000s of civilians would motivate our politicians like one of their own private club members getting snuffed. The self-interest being demonstrated by this current crop of American politicians quite simply borders upon treason. Only when their own heads, or their childrens', are chopped off by jihadis will they suddenly come to their senses.
Norm Mineta has no problem passing legislation prohibiting the search of more than three people of similar ethnic origin (read: Arab) on a give plane flight. I say, it is time that all of our politicians, save those in the very highest echalons, be obliged to fly on commercial passenger aircraft flights. Let them bump people out of first class, I care not. But it is time for our overly-insulated senators and congressional representatives to begin sharing the risks that so many of us are forced to take due to the unbelievable stupidity of these eliteists.

The neo-con element in Government has already bought into the lie of the "moderate-peaceful muslim" hook-line-sinker. Its nothing but a less confrontational method of getting Islam's foot in the door...and once its jammed open you'll see the same progression everywhere like we do at the moment in Dearbornani, Al-Michigkistan with brazen public pro terrorist rallies complete with swaskitas and death to Israel chants IN THE GOOD OLE U.S of A. Just a matter of time before what we see happening in around Paris where enough muslims gather to form large enough communities, then the clerics and imams come in & apply the true fundamentalist face in the mosques there... they stake the neighborhood as their "terroritory"...then the pickings is ripe for Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda, Hamas [take your pic] in establishing sleeper cells to attack the great satan from within when the confrontation with Iran comes to arms. Just a matter of time, count on it.

The looming evil strike on Iran
Monday February 26, 2007 (1832 PST)
a.stag@shaw.ca
Never mind about the world’s men of peace and peace feelers as they don’t matter any more for the bellicose belligerents. Never mind about the moral grounds as money buys it all, right or wrong, in today’s world of sin. Never mind about your own expression of supporting the right in the media as this media may not be even read by ignore it all masters of the world. Never mind about the right peace path directed to America by the Democrats and sensible Republicans as one robot Bush, whose keys lie in Tel Aviv, is powerless. Never mind about giving any value to your wishful thoughts about peace and expecting change of heart in Tel Aviv or Washington D.C as the things may have already gone to the stage of no return. Never mind about reading even American media as it belongs to the dustbins of Tel Aviv. This media has already been dangerously brain washed to talk freely about dropping hydrogen bombs on a non nuclear Islamic Iran as if they were toys.
The decision making about strike on Iran, including the sinful nuclear strikes on a non nuclear Islamic nation lies in Israel and there is restlessness in that world controlling media about why the strike was not done yesterday and why it has not been done so far.
The world is very dangerous and is on the doorstep of world war three or Armageddon if the Shanghai accord steps in to save Iran as well as its own survival. Other wise it will be the slaughter of an innocent Islamic nation for now and later followed by finishing off of Shanghai accord along with the slightest possession of nukes by any Islamic nation. Russia and China must kiss their own survival off few years down the road if the looming strike on Iran does get carried through. The Armeda of carriers and firepower sailing in Persian gulf and around Iran is very formidable and can be poised for even nuclear provocation.
Israel prodded actions of Bush have passed the threshold where only a miracle can bring us back to where we were and aspire for peace again. The world faces a very grim Armageddon and some how the innocent weak had seen the other powerful to their rescue after tremendous damage. I would’nt want to live in or near Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman or even Abu Dhabi due to their very close proximity to strait of Harmouz. All these areas will be toast if things get too ugly.
And Pakistan, please hide your nukes as deep as you can where a nuclear strike cannot even damage them. Musharraf need not think that his buttressing with America or Israel will cause any sympathy with those Islamic nukes, which are the most undesired even for their existence in the eyes of the disguised friends.
The world faces grim dangers, even its survival, as result of nuclear strike. The world may die of financial crash beyond repair. The world’s economies may even become dysfunctional with wide spread death, economic collapse, famine, starvation and dog eat dog culture with doomsday scenario.
But, who cares as you can burry this planet to save one Israel, which already is overly saved from any dangers.
Pakistan, please embrace China for peace reasons. Invigorate your peace and normalization efforts with India as there is too much in common to compromise.
Try to save as much of Asia’s east and north of you along with self, if the west of you starts burning. Pakistan, please take your nukes as deep as you can under the most protective mountains in the world of yours.
The world will be lucky if it can reverse the shape of things to come as the threshold has already passed what it was before first or Second World War.
There is not much the world can do as the elected president of the world’s most powerful nation is just a robot with keys in Tel Aviv.
THE VERY WORD PEACE HAS BEEN BURRIED MERCILESSLY.
Attack on Iran will be crime against humanity only to feel sorry by all with sighs by surviving, if any, as such:

Tom Clancy's "canary" system springs to mind, whereby memos distributed regarding a sensitive topic each contain slightly different text keywords or numerical values (e.g., schedules, quantities, costs).
We need to do the same thing with Musharraf, Karzai and suspect American politicians. Send them announcements of a high profile dignitary's arrival, send in a body double, and look for who responded to what version of the notification. This is a no-brainer and should have been done ages ago to ferret out the traitors here and abroad.
