1938 Alert? "UK forces say 'incident' in Gulf waterway near Iran," from Reuters, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - British forces said on Friday there had been "an incident" in the northern Gulf after an Iraqi fisherman reported seeing up to seven British or American military personnel being seized by an Iranian ship."There has been an incident somewhere in the north of the Persian Gulf," British military spokesman Major David Gell said in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, without elaborating.
He said he did not know whether any British or American servicemen were involved.
The fisherman said the incident took place early on Friday in the Shatt al-Arab waterway that marks the southern stretch of Iraq's border with Iran. His account could not be immediately confirmed.

We'll know soon enough if there is any US or British military personel involved. If anyone is reported missing in the next hours...

If true, this sounds a lot like what happened between Israel and Hizbollah last year. This time, let those who kidnap really feel the consequences.

This from Sky News:
“They were taking part in a routine operation boarding merchant ships in Iraqi territorial waters when they were seized by Iranian naval vessels.
The sailors and Marines had completed a successful inspection of one ship, reportedly a dhow, when the group and their two boats were surrounded.
They were then escorted by Iranian vessels into its territorial waters.
The forces, who were from the Type 22 frigate HMS Cornwall, are believed to have been seized in the Shatt Al Arab waterway.
The Royal Navy are insistent they were operating in Iraqi waters and not Iranian territory.”

Iranian Vessels Seize 15 British Navy Personnel in Iraqi Waters
Friday, March 23, 2007
WASHINGTON — Iranian naval vessels seized 15 British sailors and marines Friday in Iraqi waters, the Ministry of Defense said.
The British personnel from the frigate HMS Cornwall were "engaged in routine boarding operations of merchant shipping in Iraqi territorial waters," and had completed their inspection of a merchant ship when they were accosted by Iranian vessels, the ministry said in a statement.
"We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level and ... the Iranian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office," the ministry said.
"The British government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."

These would not have happened if the Iranians where given a thrashing the last time they pulled this stunt a few years backs
Such restraint will prolong this conflict, and cost lives.

AndI hope - but I do not expect - that the world in general, but particularly the Muslim world, notices. The world, and particularly the Moslem world, notices, and the world – particularly the Moslem world #150; sneers.
How many more innocent must be sacrificed, in the foolish attempt to placate implacable enemies within and without, and to maintain pc goverment policies.

Sounds like there could be the beginning incident to flare up a much more serious circumstance while the nut job is in NY.
Let it be.

Some gentlemen from Hereford will probably be retrieving the Royal Marines if necessary. I would not want to be the one holding the Marines in captivity.

Indignant reaction to this sort of thing is understandable - but think about it. Iran is not a united country. There are different power factions. Even their armed forces show allegiance to different elements within the Government. Many people, particularly amongst the younger generation (and they are in the majority in Iran) either disagree or have significant doubts about the way things are going. There are ethnic minorities who feel threatened. There is inflation; there is - incredibly - fuel rationing, due to the lack of refining capacity. They are governed by a paradise seeking nut case who got into power on an unpopular, fixed election. The list is quite extensive. The solution to a situation like this for an unpopular government is as old as time - invoke national unity (patriotism) by provoking an "incident". That's what happened in Cyprus 1974 and Argentina 1982.
There are many ways to skin a cat.
