By unidentified gunmen. Hmmm. Who could they be?
"Darfur gunmen slay peacekeepers," from Reuters, with thanks to JE:
Unidentified gunmen have killed five African Union (AU) peacekeepers in the Darfur region of western Sudan. It is the heaviest death toll suffered by the African force in one day since late 2004.
AU spokesman Noureddine Mezni says the five were guarding a water point near the Sudanese border with Chad when they came under fire from gunmen.
Four soldiers were killed in the shooting and the fifth died of his wounds this morning.
Mr Mezni says three gunmen were also killed.

"Mr Mezni says three gunmen were also killed."
...at least, the peacekeepers did fire back....the only sensible course of action when being attacked....

Tell that to the Brits
at April 2, 2007 8:56 AM
In watching the films of the "capture" of the British Navy men, I noticed a couple of helicopters flying around....I wondered if these were British helicopters....
.....If not, then where was the air cover for the Navy....
.....From now on... it would be sensible to provide air cover for the Navy personell inspecting the ships....then use the air cover if any boats approach the military.....
....This whole affairs smells foul.... something is not right...

No matter how many times it happens, it never ceases to amaze how much islamic countries get away with that not only western but even such kaffir nations as India and China and Ethiopia and Vietnam could never hope to get away with under UN supervision.
Though the people of Darfur may be msulims, (in a liberal sense), I still don't see how it's remotely appropriate for the civilized world to ignore their situation. Darfur not only represents a gigantic opportunity to help save a chunk of humanity from islamic obliteration but a chance to offer a significantly large population of people freedom from physical and mental from islamization. Would they all leave islam if we intervened and tried to convert them? Not likely, but some would, and the rest would still be largely freed from the mental trappings of arabization and jihad, at start to figure out that perhaps islam, or at least militant, politicized islam, is what brings about their struggles.
The same goes for Persians, Moroccan and Algerian Amazigh, Indian and SE Asian muslims (esp those being severely mistreated as foreign workers in the middle east), and the Pak provinces of Balochistan Sindh and PoK, (Pak held kashmir). The kurds can be included as well, but debatable as some of them are tragically still jihadist prone. This isn't opportunity knocking, it's opportunity banging on the door as hard as it can, trying to break in with an axe. The U.S. needs to let it enter now.

5 peacekeepers in Darfur is like saying 5 virgins who dated Bill Clinton or 5 righteous men in hell.
Just does not compute Mr. Spoc.

Ah, sadly, a peacekeepers lot is never a happy one. What are needed are "peacemakers" not keepers--because there is no peace, so what's to keep?
Now peacemakers, that's a diffrent story. But let's not go there. The only place peacekeepers are also completely useless is where they are supposed to keep Israel from properly responding to Hezbollah attacks and some that recently left the Gaza-Egypt border are (I vaguely remember) invested with a similar useless task.
