Evidently they did this in response to the new allegations that he gave charity money to Al-Qaeda and Hizballah. Enterprising Australian reporters ought to be asking now if those who fired him reject his Islamic supremacist views, or just favor a slower, less controversial, lower-profile route to dominance.
"Sheik up as mufti axed and role is abolished," by Taghred Chandab for the Sydney Morning Herald, with thanks to David:
CONTROVERSIAL Muslim leader Sheik Taj el-Din al Hilaly has been sacked by the peak Islamic body and the role of mufti has been abolished. The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC), which employed the mufti for more than 15 years, has severed all ties with him.
But the sheik has retaliated by registering the title of mufti for himself and has vowed to carry on speaking on behalf of the Muslim community - even though no organisation wants him to represent them.
The move comes as the Australian Federal Police widens its probe into allegations that the sheik gave charity funds to supporters of the al-Qaeda and Hezbollah terrorist groups.
The Egyptian-born imam had been plagued by problems throughout his term as mufti. During a Ramadan sermon last year he likened scantily-clad women to uncovered meat, and earlier this year he said Muslims had more right to be in Australia than Europeans.
AFIC president Ikebal Patel said the organisation had stopped paying the sheik's salary and had no intention of keeping him on as mufti. He also said the organisation owned the title of mufti.
AFIC's decision comes as the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) decided to make the role of mufti redundant and create a group of imams, the Australian Council of Jurisprudence and Research, to deal with community issues. A chairman or president would be selected to act as spokesman.
ANIC spokesman Mohamad Abdalla said Sheik al Hilaly would not be the mufti once his three-month grace period ended. He said 39 of the 50 clerics who attended the ANIC conference last month voted against reappointing him.
"Muslims don't want al Hilaly as mufti," Dr Abdalla said.
"The Turkish community, for example, does not recognise him as their leader. Having one person lead the community is problematic."
In what way?

Islamic officials take baby from mother living as a Hindu
Islamic authorities took away the baby of a Muslim woman who is living as a Hindu in defiance of the law in the latest case of religious conflict straining ties in multiethnic Malaysia, officials said Friday.
Revathi Masoosai's 15-month-old daughter was taken by the Islamic Religious Department in southern Malacca state on March 26 and handed to Revathi's Muslim mother, said department enforcement officer Mohamad Imran Ahmad.
"The baby's grandmother has custody of her for now," Mohamad Imran told The Associated Press.
Revathi, an ethnic Indian, is being held in a rehabilitation center run by Islamic authorities for her religious transgression. The baby was with Revathi's husband when she was seized.
He has filed a police complaint, but it was not clear if he plans to take the case to court. Meanwhile, the baby will stay with her grandmother. "When the baby's mother is released, she can try to regain custody if she wants to," said Mohamad Imran without elaborating.
The case, which was made public by the opposition Democratic Action Party on Thursday, highlights an increasing number of spats affecting the religious and family rights of the ethnic Indian and Chinese minorities.
Indians, who form about 8 percent of Malaysia's 26 million people, are mostly Hindus while some are Christians, Muslims and Sikhs.
Activists say a string of recent disputes have ended in favor of Muslims -- who comprise nearly 60 percent of the population -- and strained ethnic relations in this multicultural nation, which has enjoyed racial peace for nearly four decades.
Revathi, 29, was born to Indian Muslim parents who gave her a Muslim name, Siti Fatimah. However, Revathi claims she was raised as a Hindu by her grandmother and changed her name in 2001, said Chong Eng, an opposition member of Parliament.
Revathi married Suresh Veerappan in 2004 according to Hindu rites. The marriage has not been legally registered because Suresh would have had to convert to Islam first.

From the article
The Turkish community, for example, does not recognise him as their leader. Having one person lead the community is problematic.
To which Robert asked "In what way?" I'm not sure I understand the inference. Is it because the Islamic community is full of fractures and internal differences (ethnic, regional, and religious), and it is not easy to find a single leader who can unify them, and be accepted by all the clans and sects? If so, it is a vulnerability that Islamic leaders are well aware of, even if our leaders continue to not be.

Some Australian reporters have figured out that all they have to do for a story is stake out Hilaly and accurately report his words when he preaches. There's no denying he has represented Australia's Muslims (with the top title and massive support from the faithful keeping him from being deported), and he lacks the gift for sugar-coating his poison. Just listen a while, and he'll tell you what he wants to tell you, because he's proud of it.
Now reporters won't know where to go for the best quotes, and no matter who you quote and how amazing it is, it can be dismissed as unrepresentative. So the reporter problem should go away.

As time goes by there will be more skeletons found in the closet of sheik Hillarius and he will soon leave the country before he gets locked up.....he's probably visiting real estate people in the ME as I write.
We in Oz will miss him though, he's been a "laugh a minute" with his attempts to fool the human beings and some islamics as well but his time is up because he is regarded as a buffoon by us Aussies and thats not what being a feared muslim is all about so the mohammadans are giving him the flick.

Considering the content of Hilalys Allah filled mind. And his propensity for profound concepts like the 'meat' idea, he should be 'kicked upstairs', until like the Peter principal, he reaches his level of incompetence. An Abdallah of his credentials should be made supreme commander in chief of all muslim's everywhere. The first world wide Caliph. He will begin his reign as soon as he wakes up. Maybe he is Mahdi...no I guess not, Nancy Pelosi is Mahdi.
She came out of the well, and appeared to the Syrian Gov in a big blast of world wide publicity. I know she is Mahdi because she was wearing that same pale green top to visit the Syrians, and then the Saudis.
She may have been wearing that jacket for weeks. Mahdi has never been known to change his jacket either. Don't you think that is just a little toooo coincidental???

"Sheik up"
I don't come to jihadwatch.org for laughs but this did give me a chuckle.
As opposed to:
"Sheik down"
As with the Flying Imams.

Pelayo, a deportation is a long way off because under aus law, once you have been granted citizenship it can't be revoked.
Sad, but true.
What will need to happen, I think, is ratcheting up the public pressure on him.
Make him want to leave. He already seems to be spending more time away than home, which suits us fine.
