Al Qaeda claims deadly Algiers bombings

An update on this story. By William Maclean and Lamine Chikhi for Reuters:

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Bombs killed 30 people in Algeria's capital on Wednesday, attacks claimed by al Qaeda that raised fears the north African oil exporter was slipping back into the intense political violence of the 1990s.
One of the blasts, believed to be a suicide bombing, ripped part of the facade off the prime minister's headquarters in the centre of Algiers. A second bomb hit Bab Ezzouar on its eastern outskirts, the official APS news agency said.
The Al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the bombings in an Internet statement, which also included a claim of responsibility for attacks in neighboring Morocco and pictures of three "martyrs."
The claim could not be immediately verified but the group, formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), has taken responsibility for a number of deadly attacks on security forces and foreigners in Algeria since January.
Hospital sources put the toll from the two bombings at 30. Earlier, APS put the toll at 23 dead with 162 wounded.
Leila Aissaoui, 25, stood crying near the government palace.
"I thought explosions in Algiers were over," she said. "I made a big mistake and I can't accept this."
[...]
Residents said Wednesday was the first time since the 1990s that a powerful bomb targeted the centre of the Mediterranean city where police had stepped up security following a rise in attacks by insurgents in the countryside.
GAPING HOLE
The blast at the prime minister's headquarters gouged a gaping hole in the six-story building, shattering windows and showering rubble on to cars for blocks around.
Police sources said the attack was a suicide bombing.
[...]
One Algerian analyst said the operation appeared to be a reply to stepped-up attacks by the army on Islamist insurgents in the Bejaia region in mountains east of Algiers.

The former GSPC has been increasingly active over the past year. It seems more likely that this attack was in the works for quite a while, rather than only in response to something recent.

"This is a violent reaction to Bejaia operation where important leaders of al Qaeda in the Maghreb are surrounded," said security expert Anis Rahmani.
"I do believe though, that that group has no capability to topple the government but obviously it has the means to disturb the life of peaceful people in Algiers."

'"This is a violent reaction to Bejaia operation where important leaders of al Qaeda in the Maghreb are surrounded," said security expert Anis Rahmani.'

Why is it that everyone seems to think that these bombings are always in retaliation for something? Does Al-Qaeda always need a reason to kill infidels???

Answering your rhetorical question Doctor Bulldog:

Rational folks have a difficult time wrapping their heads around the actions and statements of the deranged. It takes some time to come to the conclusion that these acts are NOT reactionary but rather intended to terrorize opponents into NOT reacting for fear of worse to come.

I don't thinh this action would've taken place if there wasn't a high degree of confidence that its outcome would be favorable for AQ in Algeria.

Muslims keep pushing the world into a world war....one day soon, it will not be safe for a Muslim to walk the streets....

Posted by: exsgtbrown [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2007 2:17 PM

It's a quagmire. The French ought to end their occupation of Algeria ..... ah, the French AREN'T occupying Algeria? Well, who the heck is occupying Algeria? Isn't occupation always the reason for mass murder of human beings by Mohammedans (PBUH)? In any case, somewhere ought to leave Algeria to bring peace to the aggrieved Brothers.

Posted by: Jabba the Tutt [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2007 2:23 PM

I think the Muslims are the occupying force in Algeria...

Posted by: exsgtbrown [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2007 3:07 PM

The Presbyterian Group for Preaching and Combat (PGPC) maintains that it was NOT involved.

Posted by: MP [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2007 3:15 PM

"Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC)"

The name is surreal; Python-esque even.

What next? The Zionist Militia for Total World Domination Through Matzos, Terror and Prayer?

Preaching and combat...? Mutually exclusive, surely? Islam is peaceful.

Moderate Muslims must be up in arms that their Great Religion has been hijacked in this way. Appalled. Disgusted.

Or are the lobby groups too preoccupied with bacon hate crimes to worry about things like this?

My rendition of a recent Danish cartoon .. like?

Posted by: Ameriki [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2007 4:01 PM

Oh man that didn't turn out, but my point is so why were Muslims so mad when a Danish cartoon depicted Mohammed with a bomb in his turban? Truth hurts.

"We won't rest until every inch of Islamic land is liberated from foreign forces," the spokesman said in a recording of the phone call played on Al-Jazeera.

From the AP article

So, can someone tell me, what foreign forces (other than AQ of course) are controlling Algeria? Was the country invaded while no one was looking? Thanks.

Some Berbers in the Kabyle, and in France, are apparently finding Christianity to their liking. Let that spread. Let the awareness of Islam as a morbid cult of death, which things like this Al Qaeda attack help to make clear, go a step further, and among the Berbers of the Maghreb, including odd-man-out Morocco, let the view of Islam as a vehicle for Arab imperialism be made a theme, possibly starting with the Berber websites, demanding an end to Arab cultural and linguistic imperialism, and then for political and economic rights, and a return of the Berbers (and how many of those maghrebin Arabs are in fact Berbers, and perhaps DNA testing might cause some of the "Arabs" -- includinig those most determiined to suppress the Berbers in the name of Islam or Arab supremacy (they ovelap), to find their Berber identity.

I blame the Algerian People's Front, splitters.

ABDUL:
They've bled us white, the bastards. They've taken everything we had, and not just from us, from our fathers, and from our fathers' fathers.
MAHOUD:
And from our fathers' fathers' fathers.
ABDUL:
Yeah.
MAHOUD:
And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers.
ABDUL:
Yeah. All right, Mahoud. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?!
MOHAMMED:
Clean drinking water?

ABDUL:
What?
RASOOL:
Plumbing and clean water.
ABDUL:
Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.
MUJAHADEEN #3:
And the sanitation.
MAHOUD:
Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Abdul. Remember what the city used to be like?
ABDUL:
Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the clean drinking water and the sanitation are two things that the French have done.
TAYYIB:
And the roads.
ABDUL:
Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, clean drinking water, and the roads--
MUJAHADEEN #1:
Irrigation.
QAYYIM:
Medicine.
MUJAHADEEN:
Huh? Heh? Huh...
MUJAHADEEN #2:
Education.
MUJAHADEEN:
Ohh...
ABDUL:
Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
MUJAHADEEN #1:
And the wine.
MUJAHADEEN:
Oh, yes. Yeah...
RASOOL:
Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Abdul, if the French left. Huh.
MUJAHADEEN #3:
Swimming pools.
MAHOUD:
And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Abdul.
RASOOL:
Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
MUJAHADEEN:
Heh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
ABDUL:
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the French ever done for us?
JAAMI:
Brought peace.
ABDUL:
Oh. Peace? Shut up!

With apologies to Monty Python.

Don't confuse 'slammi preaching with the Christian variety. Their preaching has everything to do with combat--it's how they justify doing what every civilized person would not do.

Someday we're going to have to truly take the fight to them or we'll perish. At some point, brave Christian leaders will have to take to the pulpit and enforce the doctrine that Christians are not going to lay down our lives for someone else's faith but that we'll fight for our own. And for our Jewish brothers and sisters.

It's not going to be over until at lteast the Amazigh, by which I mean Amazigh ethnically and in state of mind, not Amazigh by bloodline who believe themselves Arabists, become the dominant group in that nation. Same for Morocco and Tunisia and Libya. It may not likely that all AMazigh will ended up apoastates, most will still end up referring to themselves as non-practicing muslims simialar to the Persians, but at the very least they won't be slaves to the Arab League anymore and they won't be pressured to appease the Islamist insurgents in hopes they'll be civil. Even in the West the difference between the Amazigh and Arabists is clear; the AMazigh migrants, the Kabyles, Chawis, Rif-Amazigh and others, are often known to become way more succesful, become doctors, lawyers, business managers, politicians and other such positions, whereas the Arabists from the maghreb are mor elikely to be the ones abusing the welfare systems, breeding jihadis like rabbits and rioting over their inability to find jobs that out of all immigrants only they have.

I suspect that among Amazighs themselves and anyone else who views the situation objectively, this is becoming harder to deny as fact. I suspect the Amazigh tribes know that if they were running the show in the Mahgreb their countries would be like India, Western Europe, China, SE Asia and Southern Nigeria in the 60s in terms of the progression and sophistication of their civilization. There is no doubt millions of them who don't want their lands sterotypes as more backward arab lands, be forced to have arab names, live with jihadists wanting more concessions and don't even want to be part of the Arab League anymore.

what is "al Qaeda" but a muslim terrorist. People get too tied up in knots over claims by so called "al qaeda", when islamist terrorist are all the same, use same ammo, bomb belts, etc. their aim is the same, and so it should noted "al Qaeda" is but another name for muslim terrorist.

Al-Qaeda is alive and well all over the place. Algiers now... Well some of them are alive anyway, suicide bombers don't have a lot of longevity.

Thomas Crapper, the inventor of the modern flush toilet, is an alias, an AKA, (also known as), of the greatest inventor of all time, Algore. Algore not only invented the flush, but also radio, television,
air travel, the hamburger, hot dog...and beer.
Muslims have yet to discover he also invented Islam.
Algore is Allah.
While muslims may have dug a hole in the ground and covered stuff up, any dog can do that. It took Algore to refine the process by adding water and a flush. Only a geneous would have thought of that.

You're quite right, I did not realise he was a suicide bomber. He will not want refuge in another country and he's too busy with his virgins in paradise anyway. The post was an exasperated initial reaction.

I was thinking of the Algerian who was wanted for bombing the Paris underground in the 1990s. He lived comfortably and openly in London on welfare for 10 years and avoided extradition with the help of lawyer's who were probably paid for by the British taxpayer. The interesting thing about his case is that it was 10 years before it became public knowledge and then only because of a chance remark on a radio interview.

BTW remember the Sandgatte transit camp near Calais? It was closed about the time this Algerian was finally sent back to France. I cannot help wondering if there was a connection between the two, the French saying “Give us back the bomber and we will stop these refugees storming the Eurostar train to London every night”.

Also - I see abudulla the "moderate" is showing his true colours.
