A car bomb has killed at least 55 people and injured about 70 in the Iraqi city of Karbala, in the second such attack in two weeks.The city houses two of Shia Islam's holiest shrines and reports say the bomb went off on a busy street as people headed to pray.
The bomb exploded near the golden-domed mosque of the Imam Abbas shrine.
Meanwhile, nine US soldiers were killed in Iraq in the past two days, the US military said.

Iraqi television images from Karbala showed a man running down a smoke-filled street holding a lifeless baby above his head.
Ambulances had rushed to the scene, in a crowded area full of shops and restaurants in the city, 100km (70 miles) south-west of Baghdad.
Angry people gathered at the blast site, many of them searching frantically for missing relatives, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Some began to throw stones at the police, accusing them of failing to protect the people.
Police fired weapons in the air to disperse the crowds, the agency says.
Karbala is the second most important shrine city for the Shia, the BBC's Andrew North reports from Baghdad.
He notes that attacks on shrines have become a hallmark of extremist Sunni Muslim groups, particularly al-Qaeda.
The group claimed responsibility for the bombing last year of another major Shia shrine, in Samarra, which sparked the sectarian violence that has torn through the country ever since, our correspondent adds.
A suicide bomber killed at least 42 people in Karbala on 14 April.
Earlier, the powerful Shia cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, criticised US President George W Bush for refusing to establish a timetable for a US troop withdrawal from Iraq.
In a statement read out on his behalf in the Iraqi parliament, the cleric said the situation in Iraq could not be any worse following an American pull-out than it was already.
The news is grim, as usual, but it's the last two sentences that bother me. They make Sadr sound like a disinterested statesman whose criticism of the President of the United States merits the attention of the august BBC. Yes, he is a "powerful Shia cleric," but he is also a thug and a terrorist who has a vested interest in the US leaving. Worth mentioning, I'd say.

Sadr's a shi'te, this is suspected sunni act, although it wouldn't surprise me to find this is revenge because his own shi'ite peers ran him off...where he sits today, in iran, same country who's been aiding and abetting him from the start (lest this terrorism not have lasted nearly as long as it has). How convenient.

well let me get this straight....Saddam and his evil sons are thrown out. No more midnight knock by governement to slaughter anyone opposing him, incuding an extensive secretive spying on one another for perks by iraqis against each other...for good ol saddam???

if the usa pulls out it will mean complete and total breakdown of civil law and order, and irans take over of the wealth and oil.

Call me crazy but this is exactly where world war 3 was predicted by the BIBLE and Nostradamus, and other seers in history.
I predict that Iran will launch absolutely a nuke against Israel and it will not be Israel which starts the war.The palestinians shoud be sent holus bolus to iran and forced to leave so called palestinians areas and go to the muslim brothers in Iran.
if Israel will not defend its own territory and people and evict the pallies and force them to leave the entire land of Israel, then it will be overthrown within 15-20 yrs at most.
The Jewish are being destroyed by dhimmitude and gutless Jews politicians who never went through the Holocaust and whom are so left wing they are pathetic and facile.
The current crop of Jewish govt leaders are such a sad lot, so weakened and mentally dhimmitude attitude not understanding the mentality of the people they have whom want to kill and destroy every jew in Israel.
They have no vision, no strength, no courage and no determination to save Israel from the rotting politicans within, the pallies will win within 15 yrs or so at most and destroy and kill majority of Jews.
The world is against Israel due to the superb ability of well funded terroorists whom now are legitimate as far as condi rice and other world leaders in Europe think- Hitler has returned mentally in the europeans whom are thinly veiled anti semites historically anyway...but the usa gives money and arms to israelis enemy...no doubt as to what side usa is on then is there? they are assisting the destruction of Israel.
I predict the entire world will be at a truly WW3 similar to ww2, within 5-10 yrs at most.
And Australia has neither the ability or will to call up all women and men over 18 to national service and to prepare its people for the eventual certainty of an all out world war soon. We are undefendable and unarmed civilian people and we also will end up in slavery of dhimmitude if all things remain the same. Israel will be nuked by islamics, and nothign we can do can stop it whilst anti semetism is alive and well in europe and the u.n.
If Israel is not supported, whatever will happen to Israel shall happen within our own lifetimes to our own nations. This is my prediction.

if WW3 begins, the only good thing about it will be the destruction of muslim holy sites, ie mecca would be the bonus. l will dance in the streets when that place goes down and pass out biscuits to my dogs... ps of course dogs dont need mecca to come down for biscuit time, but this time l will give it with hotdogs!

Zena, as I read this I felt thrilled. Somehow I have never thought about what I would do if we won and these evil places of islam were destroyed. I guess I just keep seeing the world systems slowly crumbling, our leaders bending over backwards to accomodate their unreasonable demands and handing out territory after territory to islam. I have never thought about victory. Anyway, thanks a lot for some moments of sheer joy that I cannot begin to describe in words.

It will leave terrible devastation in many many places. But vaporization of Mecca Medina Qom will be the only bright spot. Jews were dispersed and meek guests in the nations after the Temple was destroyed. The wind was taken out of their sails. Same will happen to Islam
Jews only really fought again, could fight again when Israel was founded about 20 centuries later. Warsaw uprising notwithstanding

While I know the following comment has been made many times before, especially on JW, it bears repeating, over and over.....
..Where is the global outcry within the Umma, decrying the murderous acts committed by Muslims against other Muslims, and the destruction of mosques and shrines? Where are the fatwas issued in this regard? Where are the voices of the Ulema - the jurists, the clerics, the scholars - declaring that such acts are reprehensible and intolerable, being un-Islamic, and in violation of the Sunna? Where? The silence is deafening.
But while no significant protests are heard about the killings of Muslims by other Muslims, who murder each other in the hundreds every week, and destroy each others' mosques and shrines, universal condemnations are issued against the American troops, who are scapegoated and despised.
No - not a peep from the Umma, and the Ulema, concerning mass murders of Muslims committed by other Muslims. What will, then, rouse those within dar al-Islam into ferocious protest, calling for blood, for retribution over insults to Islam? Why, cartoons representing the figure of Muhammed, of course.

....HAVE these 7th century morons ever heard of a neighborhood watch program....
....they rarely call the police to report suspicious activity (I am sure they know the activities occuring in their neighborhoods), but are quick to blame the police and the government when someone dies....hmmmm...kind of like dhimmicrats....blaming deaths of innocent civilians on the government instead of blaming the terrorists....yep, just like dhimmicrats...
