Judge in Internet Jihad trial: "I don't really understand what a Web site is"

And don't even think about trying to talk to him about "jihad."

Keystone Kops Alert: "'Web site' baffles Internet terrorism trial judge," by Mark Trevelyan for Reuters (thanks to Sr. Soph):

LONDON (Reuters) - A British judge admitted on Wednesday he was struggling to cope with basic terms like "Web site" in the trial of three men accused of inciting terrorism via the Internet.

Judge Peter Openshaw broke into the questioning of a witness about a Web forum used by alleged Islamist radicals.

"The trouble is I don't understand the language. I don't really understand what a Web site is," he told a London court during the trial of three men charged under anti-terrorism laws.

Prosecutor Mark Ellison briefly set aside his questioning to explain the terms "Web site" and "forum." An exchange followed in which the 59-year-old judge acknowledged: "I haven't quite grasped the concepts."

Violent Islamist material posted on the Internet, including beheadings of Western hostages, is central to the case....

Younes Tsouli, 23, Waseem Mughal, 24, and Tariq al-Daour, 21, deny a range of charges under Britain's Terrorism Act, including inciting another person to commit an act of terrorism "wholly or partly" outside Britain.

I wonder what fraction of judges understand web sites AND Islam? Can one be located anywhere?

We are all doomed.

Unbelievable or is it? Let’s face it half the judiciary in the UK and elsewhere are incompetent. This judge, however, should be tossed from his lofty perch. I’m sure he rushes home to listen to BBC’s latest drivel on his crystal set (homemade radio).
I have a year on this legal wig-nut and, at least, somewhat understand the internet.
If this judge isn’t removed from this case, and used for, only, traffic infractions, once again, the terrorists have the last laugh.

Thankfully I’m M’lud stupidity proof thanks to the Interweb.

I have learned that a backyard earthen shelter capable of providing 15 psi integrity is survivable as close as two miles from a one mega ton surface blast. Now all I need is some land mines, a pack of dogs and lots of family pictures and I may survive the stupidity that is the judiciary.

No Bugger that, I’ll move to Australia instead.

Be fair to the man; at least he was awake.

Completely incompetent! Ancient as judges tend to be, they must have, and keep up, their marbles. Keeping in touch with widely-used technology should be part of their responsibilities.

You're right Phximan: just bring up the laptop and show him a few sites.

Well this certainly gives confidence in Brits Legal System-add Prince Charlie & rest of Dim Dhimmis and Al Quaeda must be laughing.
Thank goodness for Sarkozy & Angela Merkel-both united against Turkey's admission to Western Civilization.
Keep praying for a STRONG,INTELLIGENT leader to emerge from Britain-there's gotta be someone there with more brainpower than a gnat...

There is here a fitting parable of the problem of leadership in our age.

If someone were to sleep from 1972 to this year and wake up this year, he could be excused for not knowing what a web site is.

Most of the leaders and policymakers of the world think that the Cold War is still being waged; that the West still has a lot of decolonization ("justice, addressing the grievances of the other") ahead of it; that Iraq is the same as Vietnam in all but geographic location, including an enemy that is confined to there and not to be found in the US; that the Cuba Missiles Crisis is the best model for conflict resolution, and proof of the proposition that everything can be solved through negotiations and concessions, "War is not the answer", etc.

In short, most of the leaders and policymakers of the world act as if they had slept through the entire period from 1972 to this year. But like the judge here, they don't have that excuse, and they're in positions of power, harming all of us.

The Old Order must go. The Sixties Hippies must be replaced by people who have sobered out of, or never got into, their now utterly outmoded, anachronistic, outdated, irrelevant way of viewing the world. For the good of us all, they must go.

Dont laugh. We had one puzzled judge inquiring what a "Britney Spears" was. They dont get out much.

Posted by: UK Infidel Lover [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 16, 2007 8:30 PM

LOL

perhaps we should suggest to the esteemed judge to redirect his nose from the vertical to the horizontal-that way he would be able to SEE.

Oh, MAN! LOL

One judge wanted to fix that problem! He wanted to get out more so he did something about it!

In my state we actually have computer training for judges. A whole department of state employees creates software and websites for judges!!! (taxes have to go somewhere, right??) The department's seminar is part of the basic training for all judges, updated as needed. Sounds like it was sorely needed in this case...

Even an old man like Hugh can figure out the Internet, why can't this judge?

It is a wonderful feeling knowing the fate of the West is held in the hands of people such as this Judge.

The good news: he's acknowledging his lack of understanding.

Now someone just needs to sling a laptop into the courtroom and google his name and he'll get a picture of the 'net in a hurry.

"Your Honor, this is a laptop computer. This piece of software is called a 'web browser', it allows you to look at information others have created. Tghose are called 'web sites'. High school students, British Airways, Russian Mafia, they're all out there. Now, we'll go to a special web site called a 'search engine'. And if we just click...uh, oh my..."

"THAT'S MY DAUGHTER! WHERE THE HELL DID THAT COME FROM?"

"I'm very sorry, Your Honor."
