Shiraz Syed Qazi, 26, one of four Muslim men charged in the so-called Houston Taliban case, was sentenced today to 10 months in prison.The men were arrested in November and accused of training to join the Taliban's fight against U.S.-led forces overseas.
Qazi was convicted in January of unlawful possession of a firearm. He waived his right to a jury trial, opting for a decision from U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal. She found him guilty in 15 minutes.
A July 2005 camping trip in Willis, north of Conroe, was part of a government set-up using two informants to nab men who talked of fighting with the terrorist group. FBI agents used Qazi's acknowledgment that "he overheard statements over that weekend" to connect him to the plot.
Qazi, a Pakistani, appears in photographs with a semi-automatic weapon. At the time, he was attending Houston Community College on a student visa.
While prosecutors contend that federal law prohibits someone who is not a U.S. citizen from possessing a firearm, federal public defender Brent Newton argued that his client was not criminally liable because he didn't know he could not hold or shoot a gun.
Qazi's supporters say he simply went on a weekend shooting trip, which is common recreation in Texas.

Sorry, if this is a but OT, but another person on a student visa!
Anyone have an idea the length of visas from other countries? I've heard that Pakistani citizens get three-year student visas, while countries seen as a greater risk, such as Russia, gets only one-year. I wonder how many years our "ally" the Suadi's get? Does any one know where such information is posted for Muslim countries?

Another Pakistani.
I am Pakistani Christian and would like to inform you that not a single Pakistani muslim has loyalty to USA. Muslims have loyalty to Islam and Quran. Please stop giving them immigration and visit visas.
In 1988, an amnesty was issued for farm workers who had worked on farms in USA for at least 90 days. Basically meant to legalize Mexicans. Instead of Mexicans, it was Arabs and Pakistanis that got excepted under this amnesty. Pakistanis flew in from Pakistan in droves when they heard about this amnesty and received green cards. Majority of these Pakistanis are living in Brooklyn.
They make fool of you and laugh. Being Canadian now, it makes my blood boil when they call Canadians the most stupid white people because they are easiest people to cheat when it comes to immigration.
Many Pakistanis who are not even high school graduates, came to Canada on false documents posing as Computer engineers and other high end professions under Skilled labour category.
My two cents.

There were number of Pakistani Students that got amnesty meant for farmers. I know at least 3 of them.
Depends on which degree they have applied for. For Bachelor its usually 4.5 years. Not sure about Masters.

The way to get student visa is to make false bank statements in Pakistan which is a requirement to apply for student and it shows that you will covers student fee and living costs for 4.5 years as you are not allowed to work if you are on student.
Now when they arrive in USA, they switch to Community colleges because now the fees is less and they sign up for 1 or 2 courses so they can extend stay. As long as you are registered meaning you have valid I-20 document you will not be deported from USA.

This article says the perp didn't know he could hold or shoot a gun since he wasn't a citizen. Excuse me!! But what happened to ignorance is no excuse?!!
And this is why letting all these cases go to civil courts is not a good idea. 10 MONTHS
10 months is only a break for these guys. 10 months is nothing. He will be back and trying to kill our guys and gals as soon as he can - he is a muslim on a jihad.

Thanks a bunch Crusader for your prompt response. So the Pakistani student visa will not expire for 4.5 years? I wish our visa policies were more nuanced, such as Muslim UK-ers would have to have visas (unlike their non-Muslim fellow UK citizens) or Pakistani Muslims only have a one-year visa, while Christian/Hindu/etc. get the 4.5 years.

Thank God for brain dead public defenders claiming ignorance of the law as a defense.
It reminds me of the Judge Roy Bean line of one of his criminals stating, "There is no place in the law saying it is illegal to shoot a Chinaman so shooting one is not illegal".
If that type of lawyer thought would prevail, then bin Laden having planes flown into buildings was not a crime as there is not a law on the books against it.

It's the result of deacde after decade of neglgence by our "leaders".
However if they passed the laws they were talking about,nothing will change.
Just more elctoral platform.They pull the immigration problem out from under the congressional carpet (one of their many lumps),dust it off and talk about what needs to be done.Once the elections are over,back under the carpet with nothing of worth or value accomplished.
The next time it will be brought up the "estimate" will be 20 million ILLEGAL aliens.
Maybe we should all work harder while the rest of the jelous world pisses and moans about what we have while they do nothing for change in thier own hells.

Houston's awful...if it's not illegal Hispanic gangs, it's OTM Jihadists or Katrina criminals.
In less than 4 years that city went to sh*t, and it's all floating to the surface.
When my brother-in-law was murdered in Jan, the detectives said they believe it's one of the Katrina gangs based on the MO.

Crusader is Correct. Those of us who practice real law down at the courthouse see this knd of thing every day. It plays out in divorce court, and it is always interesting to watch.
On a slow day, you can hang out in the front row in court and listen to the "dumpy blond" describe how the tall, dark and handsome Syrian, Saudi, Iranian or Yemeni gave them flowers, whispered all those words of love, and hinted at a wealthy family who would just adore her. That promised trip to the homeland didn't quite happen, mostly because he had to quit his job because of discrimination, and opened a halal market with her (and her father's) money.
Well, the business was supposed to be in their joint names, but he "forgot" and there never was a note signed for the loan. The wife never discovers the second set of books, and then it turns out that his cousin has a majority interest anyway, and, besides, according to the records he has produced the business looses money. The only reason he manages to drive a Mercedes is because his brother knew a mechanic who had a client, and, well, he got it real cheap. She drives an old Ford.
The sex was never very good. She didn't even want to have any after a while, but, well, he insisted. And when the second child came, a boy, he just started playing around with some other women very openly. He threatened to take the children, so she didn't file for divorce sooner.
If it weren't for the poor girl's father, who became genuinely concerned for his daughter's mental health and the safety of his grandchildren, there never would have been a divorce case.
But two kids and six years is enough to prove that the marriage was not a sham, so the muslim qualifies for citizenship.
Since the business is "losing money" his child support is based on the minimum wage. He will have a new Mercedes in a year or two.
