Iran's former President Khatami blames West for nuclear standoff

But of course. How could it be the fault of anyone else? From The Associated Press, with thanks to Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi:

OSLO, Norway: Iran's reform-minded former president on Tuesday blamed the West for failing to resolve a standoff over the Islamic republic's nuclear program and said mounting pressure on Tehran would only make things worse.

Mohammad Khatami said that during his time as president, between 1997 and 2005, he came close to reaching an agreement with European nations that would have allowed Iran to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes. But U.S. pressure forced the Europeans to back off, he said.

"I think our European friends made a mistake and the problem has become more complicated," Khatami told reporters at a conference in Oslo....

"If more pressure is brought on Iran it will be more difficult for both sides," Khatami said.

Khatami blamed the United States for fueling the spread of terrorism in the Muslim world and compared U.S. neo-conservative leaders to Islamic fundamentalists.

"Extremism has been strengthened in the Muslim world. If terrorism only existed in Afghanistan, it has been spread to Iraq because of the actions of the United States," Khatami said. "Violence and extremism are dangerous whether followed by al-Qaida or hardline politicians like the neo-conservatives in the United States."...

When asked whether he agreed with Ahmadinejad's calls for Israel to be wiped off the map, he said: "Personally I don't think any people or nation should be wiped out. But I do believe sometimes facts, what has happened in history, has to be taken into account."

And we all know the facts....that the bad that has happened in history IS THE FAULT OF THE Jews. Yeah, right.

Look how they LIE! What a LIE! They were well doing their dirty work way before we caught on!
3 centri fuses to go . .. and still lieing!!!

This would seem to be merely another exercise in taqiyya. I never listen to anything a Muslim says publicly as it ususally false anyway.

By the way, underneath the facade of 'reformism', Khatami is himself a known Islamic 'fundamentalist'. The man is almost certainly a wolf in sheep's clothing. Even the Iranians have stated publicly Khatami is "just another mullah."

Someone I knew some years back who came from Iran (a Christian) told me point-blank Khatami masterminded the Oklahoma City bombing in the 1990s; although I cannot vouch for the truth of that statement, I suspect his character of Khatami's character is accurate enough.

"Khatami blamed the United States for fueling the spread of terrorism in the Muslim world "

...ha, what a lie....there certainly is a worldwide spread of Islamic (muslim)terror..and it is the Muslims doing it....

..this 7th century moron is typical Muslim...blame the Non Christians and the Jews for the misery of the Muslims....when, in fact, it it Muslims who instigate over 90% of the violence in the world....Islam is choking in its own blood...

Personally, I don't believe all muslims and their countries shlould be removed from the planet BUT I can't help to think that history does repeat itself and the world will be better without them.

And this years MPV for playing the "Blame Game" goes to.....of course they won it last year, and the year before that. Wait a minute -- appears they've won it for 1000 consecutive years!

I'll let you figure out who "they" are.

man, the muslims sure are masters of double speak...how can there be a BUT about agreeing or disagreeing with ahmanassholes calles to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. simply materful and I always thought if I had these skills I would go far in corporate life. I guess you have to lie if you have some sort of authoritative position.

Posted by: PissBeUponHim [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 17, 2007 3:18 PM

i was just about to exclaim, "what??!? the u.s. to blame AGAIN???"...

when i realized we'd only been around 231 years, so i breathed a sigh of relief.

When asked whether he agreed with Ahmadinejad's calls for Israel to be wiped off the map, he said: "Personally I don't think any people or nation should be wiped out. But I do believe sometimes facts, what has happened in history, has to be taken into account."
Which very well explains why the media regard him as a moderate. And what passes for moderation these days.

Actually, if we here had the same standard, we'd all be classified as moderates, albeit on the other side.

It is amusing to watch the Persians jerk the chain and the western mind jumps to exactly the debate in which they have to defend themselves. No wonder they think people here are stupid.

WHY HAS NOT ONE person challenged these nuclear people with one simple statement:

Mr. President, if you invested several billion dollars in SOLAR CELLS to generate electricity you would have clean and equal power to nuclear with no one challenging.
Iran HAS VAST WASTE areas of mountains and deserts with sun which could provide energy not only for Iran but run power lines into China.

Now if you want electric power why not just build solar to exceed your needs.....OR IS IT NUCLEAR POWER IS FOR MALEVOLENT PURPOSES????

Wise up someone and start making them react to our intelligent questions.

Yes we feel the same way when it comes to ISLAM.

Thats why we don't want the psychos to have nukes.

The idea "terrrorism" or "extremism" only lived in Afghanastan is about as delusional as one can get.

The good news is that these people think we are stupider than they are.WRONG

Arrogance has caused many a "hero" to fall.

Khatami can shove his double speak down the well. The truth is that my so called fellow Europeans are that soft that they would probably offer their own missiles to keep Iran from spitting its dummy out.

Thankfully America vetoed the idea, and now instead of Iran inheriting the Middle East by default, they are forced to play a ‘who blinks first’ game that they didn’t want with the 'Great Satan'.

More smoke and mirrors stuff. Truth, is Muslims don't need to blame the US for fomenting violence. What are they doing in Gaza and Iraq? Oh yes, killing each other.

The US is just a convenient scapegoat for people who are incapable of rational dialogue.

Personally I don't think any people or nation should be wiped out. But I do believe sometimes facts, what has happened in history, has to be taken into account."

In other words, Israel is a special case and needs to be wiped out. This is what passes for the oft quoted "reform-minded Mohammad Khatami".

I would think the greatest obstacle in dealing with Iran is simply Europe/Russia. Between this new power hegemony, they conduct a great deal of business with Iran...despite their own issues with Muslims, they don't see or recognize the threat that a nuclear Iran poses...is it the almighty "euro" that blinds them?

The root meaning of the word "dysfunction" must come from Islam.

Posted by: champ [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 17, 2007 4:38 PM

Also, what facts does Khatami refer to? The Holocaust? The suicide bombings? The Yom Kippur War? The Six-Day War?

I'm confused...typical rhetoric from a Muslim; they possess no recollection to think or act introspectively...

Sorry for the generalizatin, but g-damn, this is ridiculous...

On my blog, I was told by a absent-minded Left-leaner that I was deluded by my fixation on Islam, essentially implying that the threat of militant Islam is either overblown or completed fabricated...

Mohammad Khatami's fear is that the West is finging out the facts about islam, and that is why the US and others do not want a nuclear armed iran. hope this is the year that iran will be sent up to the stone age.

A typical 1950s ICBM carried a 3.6 megaton (3600 kiloton) warhead. In the early 1960s, the Russians lit off a 56 megaton warhead (56,000 kilotons). The Iranians are striving to get a 15 kiloton weapon. Pakistan’s weapons are similar.

It’s all based on the binding energy per nucleon per nucleon curve:

http://www.tpub.com/content/doe/h1019v1/css/h1019v1_77.htm

When the universe finally consists of atoms around the atomic weight of 80, everything will be cold and dead as the atoms will all have peak stability. Until then, the sun will continue to force hydrogen atoms together, giving off energy. This is how you make big bombs (‘H-Bomb’). The trouble is, the process is complicated and tough to do, even for smart people.

It’s much easier to make a fission bomb; all you need is some Uranium-235. But there’s a far smaller binding energy per nucleon per nucleon differential between 235 and mid-weight atoms (see linked chart). The threat from Iran’s would-be bombs is really over-rated. You’d need several to take out a city like Reno. Most of the death would be from radioactive fallout, which would fall on the Middle East if Israel gets hit. Divine geography?

And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

Be careful what you wish for, Khatami. Soon enough, you will see the West RESOLVE this issue (but it might not be the result you wanted).

"We haven't gotten the bomb yet!...
...and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!"
LOL

Looking at it from another angle...if our efforts have, indeed, thwarted such lunatics from getting the bomb, then we consider that a badge of honor.
If it IS our "fault" they can't get the bomb, GOOD!
If there is any other way we can stop the lunatics, I'd be even MORE proud to oblige that as well.

Posted by: jcom972 [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 17, 2007 7:27 PM

Predictable shite from Shiite.

"We haven't gotten the bomb yet!...
...and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!"
LOL

That is kind of funny, but it is the way these lunartics think. Anything at all that gets in Islams way is the fault of Joo's and Americans.
Do you realise how liberal that is. Never take responsibility for anything if you can get out of it. Always blame another for your wrong doings...do liberal's go outside at night and howle at the moon, or is it only muslims?

Posted by: duh_swami [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 17, 2007 8:20 PM

Well , maybe their is some truth to his reasoning. When just men sit idley by and watch evil happen, all will reap evil done.

A most interesting post from pez. My recollection is that Hiroshima was a fission bomb. 100,000 casualties. I do not know the kiloton equivalent of the WW II bombs, but I hope Iran does not produce one of these. It could cause some serious damage if it came into NY harbor on a ship or yacht or were smuggled into the country.

Posted by: Alek [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 17, 2007 10:19 PM

Alex;

Didn’t mean to understate the human suffering that a bomb blast would cause. It would be terrible and change the way we think. The Hiroshima bomb was 15 kilotons.

But strategically, the ‘footprint’ of a 15-kiloton weapon is not that big. The link allows you to ‘nuke’ a city near you and see the affects. If a bomb went off downtown, buildings would absorb much of the blast energy and the footprint would be smaller. Most of the dead people would be downwind of the blast from radioactive fallout. Tel Aviv is in the narrow strip of Israel, immediately upwind of the West Bank.

Posted by: pez [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 17, 2007 11:40 PM

It's ok pez...
I think ,ost of us gave ya the benefit of the doubt,
(we know the suffering degrees are a "given") as you were merely speaking academically & how it applies, so no biggie there (besides, they'll probably blame the fallout on the "eeeevilll" jews, too...sheesh).

I think everyone's a little uptight about the notion of those lunatics getting their hands on a nuke, so it's perfectly understandable by all of us.

Posted by: pythagoras [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 18, 2007 4:20 PM

Yep, it’s my fault, I’ll take the heat, I’m at fault, I’m an American.

My country is responsible for so many things… let’s see what we can recall…

We are responsible for envigorating if not creating slavery, even though we ended the practice years ago, we still owe the black population reperations, even though the only practicing slave owners today are muslims (or so I hear).

We are responsible for wanting to be able to afford things, thus we have funded thousands of dirty third world factories that improve the quality of life for their workers yet pollute the atmosphere… dirty Americans

We are responsible for ending WWII… and responsible for changing the tide of it. Yes, Poland and France would look quite different today if we had not.

We are responsible for bringing down Communism in the former Soviet Union… we’re sorry, we know how they loved oppression.

We are responsible (somehow if you ask the environmentalists) for causing Chernobyl… we’re sorry, those pesky Russians don’t build them like we do.

We are responsible for having a society that is so advanced, so beneficial, that people will break the law to get here… and continue to break the law to stay here.

We are responsible for falling behind the world in education, because we have gotten a bit lazy in our superiority… we’re sorry, we’ll try to challenge you more.

We are responsbile for trashing the moon with footprints and discarded equipment.

We are responsible for Paris Hilton (ok, I’m not taking the blame on that one), Rosie O’Doughnut, Al Gore and Elvis… we are sorry.

We are responsible for poor management of our country, causing us to spend billions in buying resources from other lands, enriching their peoples and helping their countries grow, we’re sorry.

We’re responsible for helping a society vote democratically for the first time in it’s history, whether they are educated enough to handle it or not.

We’re sorry for all of these things we have caused or brought the world. We’ll gladly take them back. Just repay the loans, drop off the technology, send back the jobs and the education, send back the grain, etc. etc. etc. and we’ll call it even.

Good Luck.
