UK: Absconded jihadists want to kill British and American troops

More on this story. "Terror Suspects Want to 'Wage Jihad,'" by Julia White for the Daily Express, with thanks to all who sent this in:

THREE men on the run after breaching anti-terrorism control orders wanted to wage jihad against the West.

Lord Carlile, the independent reviewer of anti-terrorism laws, said there is "solid intelligence" that the trio were a danger to British troops stationed abroad.

He said: "These three men were the subject of solid intelligence that they intended to damage our national security by going as insurgents to kill British and other allied troops abroad."

It emerged earlier today that the suspects, who were held under "control orders", had absconded this week.

Scotland Yard named Lamine Adam, 26, his brother Ibrahim, 20, and Cerie Bullivant, 24, last night after they failed to report to police.

Police said the men, two of whom are brothers of a man jailed last month for plotting al Qaeda-inspired bomb attacks across Britain, had violated anti-terrorism "control orders" and failed to check in with authorities last week.

The announcement, following the disappearances of at least two other suspects last year, means that more than a quarter of those subject to the controversial orders -- imposed on suspects who are not charged with a crime -- are now missing.

Under control orders suspects are frequently confined to their homes for much of the day, required to wear electronic tags, obliged to check in with police, forbidden to use computers or telephones and banned from meeting people without permission....

Shadow home secretary David Davis said the news was “shocking” and said that Home Secretary John Reid had failed in his duty to protect the public.

He said: “People are placed on control orders on the basis they are terror suspects who pose a serious risk to the public.”

Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg called for a “wholesale review” of the Government’s strategy.

“This is yet another hammer blow for the increasingly discredited system of control orders,” he said.

Yes.

home secretary David Davis said the news was “shocking”

the only thing that is shocking is that these gov't elites are still clueless about who and what they are dealing with. here is clue, read the koran, hadiths,suras..that should answer the questions.

What is shocking is that after many months of painstaking investigation, the terrorists are arrested , only to be released under a "control order."

Are there no secure jail/prison cells with locks and bars to hold dangerous people?..

I suspect too many people complained that holding "suspects" behind bars was cruel....I futher suspect the same people are now the ones crying for investigations of the people who released the "suspects" under a "control order."

...You cannot have it both ways.....

...one thing is certain, the immigration laws must be tightened and Muslim Immigration must be banned...

When I read the data from the Pew report I noticed that British muslims seem to have attitudes that correlate strongly with muslims in Islamic countries ( Pakistan very much so )

You have my sympathy, since the French muslims answering the survey don't seem to hold as extreme nor strong views reflective of the Islamic world. I thought that France would be the place that would ignite... but now I wonder, since Muslim attitudes are reported doubly worse and the PC attitudes and statements of the British government persist to this day.

Britain, Sweden and Netherlands? Say it ain't so!!! The thought of witnessing a Lebanese-style insurrection in the heart of Britain, even from across the ocean, makes me cringe.

This incident illustrates a very basic and difficult problem the U.S. has in protecting ourselves against potentialy violent jihadist. Our constitution creates some basic legal rights (against self -incrimination and to presumption of innocence) (thinking of those 26% young muslims approving suicide bombs) that limit the controls we can impose on persons more likely to commit acts of violence but have not yet done so.

One hundred jihadist can assemble on a street corner in downtown USA every day with signs and bull horns chanting and raging against us "Death to America" "Death to the Great Satan" "Allah is Great" "Kill all the Jews" and we cannot do anything about it. We may believe they are dangerous and will commit great acts of violence against innocents when and if the opportunity presents itself. But until they commit some act in furtherance of a crime, they get to wail and rant all they want.

These control orders are used in the UK against "potential" criminals. They (control orders) attempt to restrict and contain behavior ( aka restrict the liberty) of some very potentially dangerous people where the government lacks sufficient evidence to convict and imprison. There is nothing analogous in U.S law that I know. The threat we face is going to require dramatic change to our legal system. We may have to add an amendment to the constitution if we are to survive. We should not have to wait for an avowed jihadist to commit his/her first atrocity before taking action to defnd ourselves. Control orders would not survive consitutional challenges in the U.S.

We need a consitutional amendment that recognizes Islam is as dangerous threat to our freedom the same way communism threatened it during the cold war years.

I am all for it, but consitutional amendments require enormous public support (ratification by the states). Unfortunatly, that public support would only probably come after some other great tragedy(ies) such as 9/11.

Let's hope they have extra tracking devices added that the "absconders" don't know about.

(Otherwise, this is a total failure of security.)

They did not abscond. The security forces knew very well what these 3 would do is run. A bigger scenario of a crackdown is being set up.

It is a good thing as long as it leaves the real British and American citizen alone.
