"The reason we are losing the battle of information and ideas is because the coherent religious and ideological position that al-Qa’ida represents has an extraordinary degree of support within the Muslim world"

The truth will out, eventually. "Extremists winning war of words, too," by Greg Sheridan in The Australian, with thanks to JE:

SIX years after the 9/11 terror attacks that destroyed the World Trade Centre in New York and killed almost 3000 people, a majority of American Muslims do not believe the attacks were carried out by Arabs. And more than one-quarter of young US Muslims believe suicide bombings can be justified in some circumstances.

These shocking and tragic findings, which come from the Pew Research Centre, tell us much about why the war against Islamist terror is going to last for generations.

The West is losing the information and propaganda war against Islamist extremism. It is not losing because it is being insufficiently kind to Muslims at home or in the Middle East.

As Britain’s Tony Blair wrote in The Sunday Times: “Extremism will be defeated only by recognising that we have not created it ... pandering to its sense of grievance will only encourage it.”

Blair confronted the argument that Muslims hate the West because it has taken military action in Afghanistan and Iraq: “Tell me what exactly they feel angry about? We remove two utterly brutal and dictatorial regimes; we replace them with a UN-supervised democratic process. And the only reason it is difficult still is because other Muslims are using terrorism to try to destroy the fledgling democracy and, in doing so, are killing fellow Muslims. Why aren’t they angry about the people doing the killing?”

The reason we are losing the battle of information and ideas is because the coherent religious and ideological position that al-Qa’ida represents has an extraordinary degree of support within the Muslim world. Even sentiments that don’t finally endorse al-Qa’ida often adopt a similar world outlook that embraces much of al-Qa’ida’s historical narrative and paranoid world view.

Most Muslims are moderates and abhor terrorism. But the minority that is extremist is a big one.

The flipside of al-Qa’ida’s success in the information war is our own dismal effort in this field. This does not mean endlessly telling Muslims how much we love them. Although in principle a bit of that is OK, as Blair implies it can be counterproductive by feeding an unjustified sense of grievance....

In many nations, moderate Muslims have been intimidated or even killed....

The Danish imams who campaigned successfully to turn a few cartoons into a worldwide jihad had previously been wrongly identified as moderates and benefited from state travel grants and the like....

One of the many disturbing features of the US Pew survey on the attitudes of American Muslims is that younger Muslims are substantially more extreme than their parents or grandparents. This reflects the experience in Europe, and probably Australia, that far from the second generation being more integrated, as has happened with every other migrant group, it is becoming more prey to the appeal of extremist ideologies and more alienated from its host society.

It is important to emphasise that the US survey does show that most American Muslims are moderate and reject extremism, and that American Muslims tend to be more moderate than European Muslims or Muslim populations in most majority Muslim nations.

But the US poll is merely the latest from across the world to show that the extremist minority is a very big, and therefore dangerous, one. A poll by the British think tank Policy Exchange showed similar results. Although most British Muslims are moderate, among 16 to 24-year-olds, 37 per cent would prefer to live under sharia law than British law, while 36per cent believe a Muslim changing their religion to something else should be punishable by death and 13per cent support al-Qa’ida.

Similarly, a joint Asia-Europe Foundation and University of Malaya poll found that 98 per cent of Malay Muslims believe Muslims should not be allowed by law to change their religion, 31 per cent want sharia law to replace the Malaysian constitution, 12 per cent support suicide bombings and a clear majority dislike or hate Europe, the US and Australia.

And in Australia, Taj Din al-Hilali, after all his extremist statements, remains the mufti. After everything, the national imams council still has not dismissed him. To equate this with Christian fundamentalism is utterly absurd. The widespread presence of extremist views in large minorities among Muslim communities poses acute dilemmas for a liberal society that no one has yet begun to face up to.

Indeed not.

Bush's plan does not have the needed component of truth, he never made a coherent argument for any action that will ever bear fruit that preserves western ideals freedom or liberty. His argument that Islam has been hijacked by terrorist doesnt get the job done, unless the job is human shield for jihad.

Great article. I will optimistic about the West surviving this conflict when articles like this are common throughout the media. What will happen first, an article like this in the NYTimes, or the NYTimes disappearing under a mushroom cloud?

Most Muslims are moderates and abhor terrorism.

I stopped reading at this sentence. Most Moslems, all observant Moslems, embrace terrorism and worship it. It's in the book, as they say. Maybe this Oz reporter should crack the book.

Extremism will be defeated only by recognising that we have not created it ... pandering to its sense of grievance will only encourage it.

Speaking of turnspeak hypocrisy, isn't this the same clown who said Islam is progressive?

98 per cent of Malay Muslims believe Muslims should not be allowed by law to change their religion,

Why is this and why is it prevelent everywhere?

Apostates dont pay any jakat. Apostates are no longer under control. Successful apostates are role models for future apostates.
When Mohammad died many muslims jumped ship, prompting Abu Bakr to remind the Mohammad worshipers, that Allah was still in charge, stay muslims, and keep paying that tax. Then he launched the 'War of Compulsion', which was probably done to increase the tax base, and get more muslim fighters, for more ambitious undertakings.
It's all about money and power, it always has been and it always will.

I am sick of hearing that name Bush/Arbusto whatever I’m sick of it and him and all, yes all of his advisors, ok so I do like Cheney but only because he unloaded on a lawyer. That’s right, that is my prerogative being an American, to disagree or start a fuss. I don’t follow any card board cut out any where and neither should you. Its not unpatriotic to think for yourself, to use the brain that God gave you. I mean, what the heck would God put you in America at this time for, surely not for picken strawberries? To become one of the sheeple, I don’t think so. Be advised any doubters we will be victorious, and afterward we will be compassionate, as always. Wanna bet? Anyone?

LMAO...what?
"The reason we are losing the battle of information and ideas is because the coherent religious and ideological position that al-Qa’ida represents has an extraordinary degree of support within the Muslim world"

...ummm, just within the MOSLEM world??????
They've ALWAYS had the support from "within", so the only thing that works so well for them NOW is the fact they have support from out here in the rest of the world...by the naive nabobs, and the willfully malicious 5th column from within right here in our own respective nations.

Someone up there needs a clue.

It is natural that Muslims will self-radicalize over time within host countries. Life is not an easy thing, and when something goes poorly for a person, it is a natural self-defense reaction to try to shift the emotional blame to others. Us infidels usually blame co-workers, childhood, weird uncles, or dependencies.

For whatever reason, Muslims seem to struggle more than most. And they can blame their struggles on us.

And once that blame is squarely assigned, the emotional self-defense reaction first falls back on the purity of Sharia, especially for those who have never lived under it. Didn’t get the promotion? It’s OK because your lifestyle is more righteous than the Infidel who is your new boss. You can remain morally superior despite the personal failures. Jihad is the next logical step in the process. The whole process is laid out, word-by-word, in the Qu'ran.

Islam is a brilliant, self-purifying system of regression.

Blair does have a few good points about us not creating terrorist, but he misses the point about the true nature of the islamic terrorists, those that follow the koran, the "pious muslim" can become a terrorists or at least supportive of islamic terrorists.

Let me ask you this. If Al Qaeda and their ilk were suddenly and spectacularly successful at bringing the West, particularly America to its knees there would be an EXPLOSION of fanatic Muslim pride and millenial expectation. How many of those 'moderates' would be dancing and laughing and passing out candy over their fellow American's radioactive corpses? Wanna bet most of them?

Islam is Evil.

Ultimately winning the war against Islamic expansionism and terror will depend on how well the western world communicates several key realities to the remainder of the world (Islamic or otherwise).

It is really unfair to place the burden of succeeding with this problem on any government especially in the timeframe of a few years; with regards to Bush and Company, they didn't have any cohesive precedent to follow on this issue (the Clinton or Reagan Administrations?)and have been stuck with a trial-and-error situation (though admittedly more error than trial). America was not prepared for this challenge in 2001; thus it is no surprise that so far it has come up short.

There is one reality that clearly trumps all other arguments put together on either side of the pro-terrorism or anti-terrorism sides of this war: Islam teaches first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and puts these concepts into action and does so without any real limits or constraints.

How attractive can any ideology that devalues human life to such a degree really be? Can such an ideology really deliver aynthing to the masses other than propaganda? And indeed can ANY ideology really deliver anything positive to the world other than propaganda? (Democracy really isn't an ideology anyway; it is more like an absence of any all-embracing ideology; the individual is free to determine his or her own ideology in life).

How well does the institutionaliztion of first degree murder serve any (Islamified ones are the only ones I know of that have regularly institutionalized first degree murder)society? For an answer to this question all one need do is travel to any Islamified country and spend a little time there and get to know the locals. It is difficult to imagine anyone coming up with an answer other than the obvious one-- which would be something akin to "not well."

The value of human life cannot be explained in words or ideas; it surpasses them. Life itself is more important than any idea or verbalization of them can convey.

How many people would WANT to move to Pakistan or Saudi Arabia from the western democracies? or even from a second or third world nation like Mexico or Brazil? Could anyone in their right mind ever expect an Islamified state to draft a document akin to the US Constitution of Magna Carta? Can anyone name ANY positive contributions by Islam to the world since, say, 1900?

And how many people REALLY want to live under the omni-present threat of beheadings, amputations, stonings, whippings and beatings (which is what living under Islam translates to)??? Most would take a western democracy any day. no amount of propaganda can totally obscure that.

Posted by: pythagoras [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 30, 2007 10:57 PM

islam is gaining ground in Latin America nowadays too. So now here is another front that democracy will be forced to defend itself. (Latin America and the caribbean make a convenient jihad base to attack America from).

Ultimately winning the war against Islamic expansionism and terror will depend on how well the western world communicates several key realities to the remainder of the world (Islamic or otherwise).

Mmost of the world does not enjoy the educational, human rights, and economic advantages of any western democracy and sees things very differently than does, say, an American so this is not going to be as aeasy as it sounds. I think we need to stay focused on the value of human life first and foremost; freedom and human rights are often seen as disposible to the majority of the world's population. Abstractions may not cut it with these folk (if we ARE trying to win their hearts and minds). Life means more in any democracy than in any Islamic dictatorship. That has weight that propaganda inherently lacks.

Can such an ideology really deliver anything to the masses other than propaganda? And indeed can ANY ideology really deliver anything positive to the world other than propaganda? (Democracy really isn't an ideology anyway; it is more like an absence of any all-embracing ideology; the individual is free to determine his or her own ideology in life).

Breaking through the propaganda used by Islam to get a lock on the human mind in the poorer, uneducated nations will prove essential. I don't know if the USA ever did well in its handling of the twin problems of ignorance in third world nations and the role it plays in the expansion of malignant ideologies (for example Communism and fascism besides of course Islam).

"Moderate" Muslims, like jihadist Muslims, are both minorities within the body of Islam. The millions and millions of Muslims who are 'in the middle' give their tacit consent and tacit approval to the discrimination, bigotry, violence and murder that takes place in the Islamic world. Until the true majority, who are not the moderates but approving bystanders, change their attitude, Islam will continue to shed blood all over the world. And, I don't have much hope for the 'middle' majority, no matter what the West does to try to win their hearts and minds.

What you wrote there is exactly how I see it!

They need generations to come totally clean from islam.. our investment in innocent crime victims.. in money.. in effort.. in thought.. in emotion..

We simply CANNOT AFFORD these simple and dangerously pre-programmed [for failure] mahometans in our midst!!!

our POLOticians are simply INSANE!!

They are hopelessly liberal. That includes the repubes.

Can ANYONE ever SPEAK UP??!!!

Thank you, Pez, for concisely breaking it down.

It's an Extremists' world, the Moderates just live in it...

Posted by: objective1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 31, 2007 12:28 AM

So far it is only a *tiny minority of extremists* in the West who are clear on the concept of Islam's threat to modern civilization, a threat that grows more obvious each day. When the fight is not even properly defined none of us should be surprised we are losing it.

As the environmentalists say, the question is What will the world look like when we finally do come to our senses? We cannot overlook the fact that the Islamists are working hard to leverage nuclear-armed, traditional enemies against each other. In such a complex situation it may not be at all clear who is the proxy of whom.

We all know that everything will change the next time Alkaida pulls off a spectacular attack. Their whole reason for existing is to promote, cause and elicit maximum destruction of human life for the promotion of Islam. Whether they be Muslim or infidel lives is unimportant, so long as the cause advances. To speak of the value of human life under the current conditions is immaterial. A cult that worships only Death will be satisfied only when they have been dealt a final blow. Our survival instinct is the only thing they need fear, but they do not fear because they do not understand. When we get to that point "political will" is irrelevant.

There is no penetrating or understanding "Muslim thinking". Please abandon this idea! If we must have something to hope for, something that might avert global genocide, it is that a few rays of light will get through from the infidel West or the East, and these will allow some Muslims to free themselves.

Even the hope that things will turn out somewhere inbetween an ideal solution and a horrific scenario, as things usually do, is little solace. The article from The Australian helps a little, though.

All my good intentioned Americans.

Look, all of us have to agree that we will now go the next level. We will give 15 to 30 minutes a day to manufacture and publish and distribute tracts, or articles to our local citizens about the danger ahead of us.

Your level of intolerance is a form of suffering that can only be remedied by actual physcial action.

Thirdly, Western Civilization will only survive this onslaught as a group. Any effort to strengthen our ideology face to face with each other is the only way to bring the nation together. Leadership only can lead when there is consensus, it doesn't happen the other way around. We are living the effect of low consensus, lets try another route.

Lastly, Have deep faith in your actions and convictions, guess who has some faith of their own? hmmm..

There is no such thing as a 'Moderate Muslim' to be a muslim you have to believe in the eventual aim of Islamic rule over all. If you do not believe this then you are NOT a Muslim. So the question then comes down to 'fast Jihad' i.e. violence or 'slow Jihad' ie outbreeding, deceit and lies. Either way the ultimate aim is the same so therefore NO Muslim can be called moderate.

The 98% of Malay Muslims who are violently opposed to apostates are not only doctrinally consistent, they also show the enormous psychological weight that apostates have. Believers hate and fear them.
I love Ali Sina's website, Faith Freedom International, and reading the apostate postings is like getting a glimpse into the hopeful world that could one day redeem many countries now shackled by Islam.

Assalamau Laikum all,

A few interesting and impressive posts here today. A few points I'd like to raise too.

1) Many infedel here think that Islam simply wants to "do one" over the infedel ...Many muslims think that he (the infedel)has had it "a long time coming"....to deny that many muslims thinks like this is folly...ofcourse many simple minded muslims think like this.

By some muslims...the West will never be forgiven for creating an Israel...and giving half of Kashmir to India....what did you do that for?

This has directly led to problems in Lebonan, Jordon, Syria and Palestine....and my Pak.

The frustration is that they cannot get the peoples of Israel (or India) outta their backyard...

Many in reality ofcourse are jealous of what the West has managed to achieve...of why Islam no longer has the creative edge that it used to at the start....

2) Equally many infedel think that Islam has had coming for a long time...

but you will not be able to do this....you see most muslims believe that on judgement day every muslim...even those that have been dead and buried for generation will rise from their graves and take up issue with you...This is one of the reasons why muslims procreate so readily....to have the numbers with them on judgement day

Jesus will side up with us...and you won't have a leg to stand on...whether this is all true...and will come to pass ....only Allah SWT knows..

Peoples who burn their dead..e.g hindoos, Sikhs...will not have the capacity to call up their dead breathern on that day...they have burned them....this is why Islam buries theirs....ready for that day...

It is also I think that on both sides factions of peoples want to take it to the next level. There will be three drivers for this.

a) The next hugh terror attack in the Amerike,
b) Oil reserves in the ME starting to run out and
c) A new fuel development reducing the need of export of oil from the ME

Points b & c in particular are important as oil IS the economy of the ME. Take that away...and the ME could collapse...and Allah will never allow that.

For me none of this is as important as the purity of Ahmadi Islam.

We want global islam to purify the world....it may or may not happen...but it cannot if we don't pull together....the truth is we need you...and even though you don't know it yet...you need us ....Ahmadi...

Stay cool...stay focused....stay Ahmadi

Two comments that say what I think:

Islam is a brilliant, self-purifying system of regression.

There is no such thing as a 'Moderate Muslim' to be a muslim you have to believe in the eventual aim of Islamic rule over all. If you do not believe this then you are NOT a Muslim.

That is not difficult to work out, so why do so called intelligent people fail to see that.

I am a secular person, but I also recognise that there are people who want to lord it over others, that is what Islam enables, and it does not matter if 90% of Islamics are peaceful and want to get on with their lives, what matters is the 10% or plus who control and manipulate the rest.

The question for me is that if the 10% are isolated and exposed as it seems to be happening in Iraq in Anbar province, how long before they regress back into their Islamic way of thinking, one generation at most or until they have what they want, the only course of action is the total global destruction of Islam as a belief system no matter what it takes and that takes clear-sighted long term effort and a total understanding of what we face.

The point when it happens is when the majority in the non-Muslim world looks at a Muslim and feels both pity and biting contempt.

Naseem sez: This is one of the reasons why muslims procreate so readily....to have the numbers with them on judgement day.

And that statement standing alone, illustrates muslim insanity.

As Britain’s Tony Blair wrote in The Sunday Times: “Extremism will be defeated only by recognising that we have not created it ... pandering to its sense of grievance will only encourage it.”

The belly laugh of the day.

The same Tony Blair who insists on "negotiations" with Iran, the country that "detained" a 67-year-old scholar who was home visiting her ninety-something mother?

"Peoples who burn their dead..e.g hindoos, Sikhs...will not have the capacity to call up their dead breathern on that day...they have burned them....this is why Islam buries theirs....ready for that day..."

A chuckle. Do they know of the existence of worms who are eating their dead brethren in the grave? Do they know that Iran sits on a fault line and that many of their brethren have been pulverized in earthquakes? If Allah can't find DNA in ashes can he find it in bits of dust?

Does Iran have natural history museums? Will any of their dead break out of the display cases on judgment day?

Re; "The reason we are losing the battle of information and ideas is because the coherent religious and ideological position that al-Qa’ida represents has an extraordinary degree of support within the Muslim world"

I agree. Further, it is the psychotic hatred of Jews prevalent among so-many Muslims (mild or intense)that makes the whole idea of "moderate Islam" a logical impossibility. (For example, CAIR refuses to condemn Hamas, etc. for that reason.) The existence of Israel is salt in the wounds of the Qu'ran beliefs re Jewish people and other non-believers. It's just not supposed to be so (free-non-Dhimmi Jews in Dar-al-Islam). Until this problem is overcome Islam will be a danger to everyone. So much of the "grievances" and Muslim violence are traced back to this psychotic Jew-hatred that is in the DNA of Islam.

One more thing noted: Anti-Semitism has deep roots in both the Arab world and in Europe. It's true that it sometimes has gone into latent states, but it is always there in one way or other. Anti-Semitism is not in the historic DNA of America and Muslims are going to run into a lot of cold shoulder here because of that. However, unfortunately they may have an audience in Europe because many there share this psychosis (especially) with the Arab-Muslim world.

As long as this problem exists, there is no such thing as a "moderate Muslim". I think that's reality. (Denesh, it makes "moderate Muslim" a delusion.)

Someone should take some statistics regarding the comments to Sheridan's article. I'm surprised by the number of leftword liberal comments pointing at the wests political policies and our thirst for oil that is to apologize for Mohammadans. I thought the majority of Aussies where some what educated as to the objective of Islam. Maybe I should move down under and get away from it all.

Naseem,

If Allah can't find bodies that have not been buried then I guess none of the 9/11 hijackers will be found either, since their bodies were both burned and pulverized.

That means none of the "martyrs" will rise again. Neither will most suicide bombers who blow up their own bodies. Not much left for the next life, is there?

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
For dust you are and unto dust you shall return.

What a terrific article. Finally, some people are wising up to the fact that Al-Queda and other such terrorist groups haven't hijacked Islam, they are merely interpreting it correctly. And still we see people insisting the words "Terrorism" and "Islamic" not be used together when Islam is by far the biggest inspiration for terrorism in the world. Of course, most of these types are lefties who in their ignorance buy the Muslims' pathetic lies about they being the victims of the West.

Hopefully, we'll see more articles like this cutting through the multicultural fog that blinds the West to Islam's culture of death and oppression.

It's more than a little ironic that the "lefties" did everything they could to eliminate even the vestige of Christianity in America, on the grounds of separation of church and state, but see nothing wrong with championing a religion that sees no difference between the state and the mosque and a people that would impose their religious laws on all.
Blue laws in America that kept most businesses closed on Sundeay were eliminated but we have special footbaths in public accommodations run by the federal government for the sole benefit of a single faith.

Extremism will be defeated only by recognising that we have not created it...pandering to its sense of grievance will only encourage it.

So let's give all those muzlim 'problem children' a big "F* You," nuclear-style!

I think "taking it to the next level" here means Islam going to the next level of parasitism, after oil. A tribe that is both cornered and deranged is a dangerous tribe indeed.

Wow!! And that was in "THE AUSTRALIAN"?? I used to think that newspaper was a real leftist sissy rag - until now. This is a good sign.

I am not as sanguine about this article as an omen of good things from The Australian as Timbo.
I went to the original article and read the comments. Most commenters seemed obsessed with proving a moral equivalency between Islam and Christianity or with comments about skin color, the evil "whites" or the class struggle, ad nauseum.
Seems the Left in all Western countries is determined to commit SUICIDE and take the rest of us along.
