"The Australians ... to quote one military source, 'were having none of it'."
"Australians 'repelled Iran navy'," by Frank Gardner for the BBC:
Iranian naval forces in the Gulf tried to capture an Australian Navy boarding team but were vigorously repelled, the BBC has learned.
The incident took place before Iran successfully seized 15 British sailors and Marines in March.
The lessons from the earlier attempt do not appear to have been applied in time by British maritime patrols.
The 15 Britons were searching a cargo boat in the Gulf when they were captured over a boundary dispute.
'Having none of it'
When Iranian Revolutionary Guards captured the British sailors and Royal Marines in March, it was not exactly their first attempt.
It turns out that Iranian forces made an earlier concerted attempt to seize a boarding party from the Royal Australian Navy.
The Australians, though, to quote one military source, "were having none of it".
The BBC has been told the Australians re-boarded the vessel they had just searched, aimed their machine guns at the approaching Iranians and warned them to back off, using what was said to be "highly colourful language".
The Iranians withdrew, and the Australians were reportedly lifted off the ship by one of their own helicopters.
The circumstances for the Britons in March were slightly different in that they were caught so much by surprise that, had they attempted to repel the Iranians with their limited firepower, they would doubtless have taken very heavy casualties.
But military sources say that what is of concern is that the Royal Navy did not appear to have taken sufficient account of the lessons of the Australian encounter.
In an oblique reference to the threat from Iran, Britain's First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, has recently admitted there was a need for greater strategic awareness in the northern Gulf.
There's a greater need for "having none of it" from Iran, on land or sea.

they were probably Aussie SAS. the british guys captured were seamen backed by a couple of experienced royal marines. but makes you think why wasn't the british on the look out and could back up these guys if it just happened to the Aussies?

A different commanding officer for the UK may have responded in a different way but we may never know.
All we do know is that the mothership failed to defend her crew. May the mistake never be repeated.
The Aussie encounter took entirely way too long to make the news.

Hurray for the Aussies.
OT - did anyone notice how AP is using Al Qaeda type stringers for their news from Iraq ?
These bastards falsely insinuate that we are bloodthirsty crazies, wrongfully killing civilians and other such poppycock, and essentially propagandize for the Crap Media (MSM) and the Dems.
We are winning and the military is doing an awesome and great job for which the West can be proud.
Bless these troops, their commanders, and the families back home who support them.

Don't think your British sailors are to blame for this debacle. It's the backstabbers at home who leave them having to look over their backs..
Only thing I can say is.. we all are guilty of NOT massing in the streets to BACK our MILITARIES!
Screw the pooftahs in our guvmints!!
The pooftahs who.. used to be the nerds in class.. mind you.. which doesn't mean they were always the geniuses.. no.. these were the snitches, the tattle-tales, the overly ambitious and so on.. the class presidents.. in Germany of the 70s they were the Kommunisten arguing whether the "right path" was Marx or Lenin or Mao.. I KID YOU NOT!
See also under stone thrower Joschka "muesli" Fischer. We still have LOADS of these 670s dinosaurs in office, not only in Germany.
You have them in Britain too.. Red Ken and Pjiotr Galloway and son on.. too many to name. They have been OUTED too many times on numerous blogs - not only this venerable one called Jihadwatch.
So there is NO WAY we can put blame on British Marines who are unsure if they will face a court martial should they shoot back without consulting a lawyer first.
Do NOT blame your marines.
Blame your guvmint FIRST and second blame US ALL for not being a force in the streets to DEMAND that all our forces be allowed to do the jobs and to DEFEND themselves ON THE SPOT when they do come under attack!!
I know I am a coward so if I were on of these Marines I'd PREFER to fight rather than face captivity at the hands of these rogue bandits!
Knowing that I might face court martial and shame at home might indeed hold me from pulling the trigger when i need to.
Anyone who joins the Military these days when they are facing the enemy not only abroad but a much more ferocious and insipid one AT HOME.. they have to be truly BRAVE!!
Australians happen to be just a little more independent-thinking than the rest of us!
But I say do NOT blame the British Marines for their ignoble fate at the hands of these modern-day pirates.
The blame must go solidly where it belongs: At the hands of those who used to snitch on you in school. These days they are in power and they arfe selling out our soldiers in the field as they are selling all of us out at home.
Sad but true.

They didn't have to point their machine guns. All they had to do was to throw pork at them.
Which reminds me... I heard an unconfirmed story of American Troops in the Philippines in the turn of the last century. They were constant targets of Muslim harassment. Until one day they captured many of these terrorists. Bound them and tied them. They threw pork, pig organs and blood at them and finally set them free. After that the troops were not harassed and were left alone.
They should have captured some of the Iranians and have done the same thing.

Don't think your British sailors are to blame for this debacleIn that sense, perhaps not, but their behaviour during and after capture gave so much comfort to the enemy that they have to shoulder a large part of the blame. Without exception, they all behaved as though they were taking part in some bizarre reality TV show (celebrity little brother?).
I, for one, will never forget the scenes of their meet and greets with cheetah, laughing and relaxed looking whilst in the company of the chimp-in-chief, allowing themselves to be paraded without their uniforms, in standard Iranian leisure polyester.
And then selling their altogether pathetic stories to the press, oh yes, they really showed the strength of the Royal Navy ('I cried like a baby').

Update: The ADF clarifies:
AUSTRALIAN sailors did repel Iranian gunboats in the Persian Gulf, but it was 2-½ years ago, and it wasn't at the expense of their British counterparts' reputation.THE Australian Defence Force moved today to clarify a report by a BBC reporter who said an Australian navy boarding crew in the Gulf repelled an Iranian gunboat which threatened them not long before 15 British sailors were captured in a similar incident, in March this year.
A defence spokesman said today the incident involving the Australians, a four-hour confrontation after they boarded a grounded cargo ship, occurred in December 2004.
In addition the Australian incident wasn't reported at the time "because it was representative of operations in the Gulf."
Just another day for Aussie sailors (I don't think the SAS is used for boarding parties.)

Like it says in the report, if the RN guys had resisted they may have taken heavy casualties, the problem lay with the commanders in that they should provide more support for the guys and girls in the boarding parties. The Ship the RN people wre from should have intervened and warned them off, but as is typical of the RN (I'm ex RN myself) the officers aint really got a clue, all pomp and no common sense.
A big up to the Aussies though, thats definitely the way to do it!! Lets hope our Navy takes heed and reacts the same way from now on.
And i have to say it was appaling to allow those sailors to sell their stories to the media.

"Frank Gardner for the BBC..."
--the article above, citing the reporter
Not the Frank Gardner?
The Frank Gardner who for years spouted pro-Arab and anti-israel reports from the Middle East?
The Frank Gardner who on September 12, 2001 had to report "reluctantly" from Cairo that Cairenes were celebrating upon hearing news of the attacks in New York and Washington, and one wondered why he had to report this "reluctantly"?
The Frank Gardner whom Muslm terrorists tried to kill in Saudi Arabia, and as he, Frank Gardner, lay bleeding on the street, he begged passersby "help me, I'm a Muslim, help me, I'm a Muslim" because, you see, Frank Gardner knew after his years in the Muslim countries that the only conceivable appeal that might get someone to help him would be to say not "help me, I'm wounded" or merely "help me" but only, given his appearance, "help me, I'm a Muslim." That was the moment of truth, or should have been, for his listeners -- but was it?
And has Frank Gardner forgotten what, for some minutes when he thought he was dying, he appeared to recognize, and gone right back, the way that another untrustworthy reporter from the Middle East, Bob Simon, just after his brief capture by Iraqis during the Gulf War, seemed just a bit chastened, just a bit less outrageous in his reporting, but has returned, whenever he gets chance -- perhaps stupidity rather than malevolence explains it in Simon's case, to his staggering incomprehension of what is going on in the Middle East, not least in the Lesser Jihad against Israel, based on Bob Simon's inability or apparent unwillingness, during all his years reporting from Israel, to learn the first thing about Islam?
Now Frank Gardner is back, reporting on naval battles in the Persian Gulf, does one have a right to ask, and now have answered by him, this question:
When you in a moment of truth screamed "help me, I'm a Muslim" what did you mean? Why did you scream those words, and not others?
We want to know. Tell us.

This story with great detail is listed at www.snopes.com the urban legends web site. General John J. Pershing was given credit for this, but snopes says it was another officer. Twelve "insurgents" were captured.
Twelve graves were dug and then twelve pigs shot and gutted and put in the graves. Eleven were shot by our firing squad falling in the with the pigs, guts n blood. The survivor was sent back to tell the story. For 50 years all was quiet on the Philipines Front.

Yes, TR, Pershing is mentioned here in a pig pipe dream here from time to time. I've carried those quotes and credits from Jihad Watch to other sites. Even the White House via ground pounded mail. At least I know the words Jihad Watch have been in the home.
Austrailia's "Desert Rat Kids" would have pig parlors built all over Iraq and Afganistan. All dedicated pig farmers and pigs would be maintained for the "insurgents" cringe "factor! I can hear the feeder lids banging now! You could hear the high pitched squeals for miles! Oh! The odors waifting thru he air!
They'd shake in their sandles! Paridise Lost!
Heck! The smart Aussies would somehow put dried pig's blood in every weapon's projectile!
I wonder if pigs would eat poppies?
I admit, I was a hog & bull hauler to the tune of 1,800 to 2,000 hogs per week. We may have indirectly met before over the Easter Ham at your house.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have learned the difference between the Aussies and the English. Not all "white, blond, blue-eyed" English-speaking people are "feed for our fighting cocks", as an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander put it right before grabbing 15 British "military persons" without a shot being fired. More recently, another 5 Britons were grabbed, right inside Iraq's Finance Ministry. Like every government or Western office, it is surrounded by a Berlin wall and 3 rings of razor wire, which did not keep the attackers dressed as Iraqi police from intimidating guards and just brashing them away. As they entered the building, they made their intent clear, shouting: "Where are the foreigners?". And yet, the Britons did not fight. 4 of them were "professional security personnel", with military careers in the "elite" British SAS, all armed with powerful automatic weapons. Not one even pointed the weapon and told the attackers to back off. Again, heavily armed British "military professionals" were taken with bare arms, without a shot fired. All attackers were Iranian Revolutionary Guards, fluent in Arabic, and yet, they did not even bothered to hide being Iranian, talking to each other in Farsi. This shows the degree of contempt they have for the British. Why shouldn't they? Shortly before the earlier taking of the 15 Brits, Tony Blair emphatically declared that any use of force against Iran is "not an option, under any circumstances". This is the same Blair who was so bloodthirsty and uncompromizing toward the Serbs, pushing for the war against them even harder than Clinton did. Our own so-called leaders, both civilian and military are not much better than Blair. Almost every day, our GI's report their buddies being killed by the powerful Iranian ESP's (Explosively Shaped Penetrators). And yet, Baby Bush does not dare to take on Iran, paralized by fear. Here it is, NATO, the mightiest military alliance in history, too cowardly to even use its right to self-defense against a relatively small, non-nuclear(yet), stand-alone country. It is not Arab, the Arabs will not join it to fight us. It is Shi'ite, considered apostates by the vast majority of Muslims. The Muslim world will not fight us for the Iranians. There are no logical reasons for NATO's cowardice, only pathological. This is even greater cowardice than the one displayed by the French on March 7, 1936 when they did not dare to challenge Nazi troops marching into the demilitarized Ruhr, at the time when France was still vastly stronger than Germany, and could have pushed all the way to Berlin in a single week. The last best chance to prevent the most horrible war in history was lost. This NATO cowardice can have even more dire consequences, now that the mad suicide bomber Ahmadinejad is within a short reach of the ultimate bomb. Looks like bombing and murdering Serbs who have never spilled 1 drop of English or American blood in their entire history, not even in self-defense when US and UK were bombing and burning them and their children alive in their own homes, is all NATO is good for. Maybe we should change our US Constitution and start importing our presidents and top military leaders from Australia, where they still have men.
