Hundreds surrender at Lal Masjid, thousands remain

Lal Masjid Update. "Hundreds surrender at Pakistan mosque, many defiant," from Reuters:

ISLAMABAD - More than 500 radical Muslim students surrendered at a besieged mosque in the Pakistani capital on Wednesday but thousands of militants remained inside a day after 11 people were killed in clashes.
Hundreds of soldiers and police sealed off the mosque and imposed a 24-hour curfew after Tuesday’s bloodshed, as the government extended a deadline for students to lay down arms.
The violence erupted after a months-long stand-off between the authorities and a Taleban-style movement based at Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, less than a couple of kilometres (a mile) from parliament and Islamabad’s protected diplomatic enclave.
Soldiers moved 12 armoured personnel carriers, mounted with machineguns, into the area as gunfire subsided overnight.
Growing numbers of students took up an offer of safe passage and 5,000 rupees ($85) and left the mosque as a deadline for students to surrender passed at 1.00 p.m. (0800 GMT).
More than 500 people, 100 of them women and children, had left the mosque but between 2,000 and 5,000 people remained inside, officials said.
The men who surrendered were herded onto trucks while women and children were released.
Liberal politicians have for months pressed President Pervez Musharraf to crack down on Lal Masjid’s clerics, who have threatened suicide attacks if force was used against them.

An AP report contains this quote concerning the holdouts:

One of those who decided to give up, 15-year-old Maryam Qayyeum, said many were not leaving the seminary. "They are happy. They only want martyrdom. They don't want to go home," she said.

Greetings:

The brother of the head "Imam" was caught trying to sneak out in a burqa. I guess they'll be calling him Abdul Aziz al-Burqa from now on.

Does the Koran say anything about cross-dressing?

9:39 If ye go not forth He will afflict you with a painful doom, and will choose instead of you a folk other than you. Ye cannot harm Him at all. Allah is Able to do all things.

Prepare for your painful doom quitters.

11B40; Maybe that's the reasoning behind such a strict dress code. I've read about men sneaking out of mosques in drag, probably with little kids in tow. And again, another fine example of the mighty men of islam. What insidious wimps.

Where is Naseem...we need her/him/they to explain to us what is going on.

2/5 thousand people inside is a lot of people.
The authorities should cut off water, and any electricity, and prevent any food delivery's, and wait them out...

When you make life on Earth hell through the dismal Koranic madness, martyrdom probably looks like a pretty nice escape from its joyless, babbling, brainless grimness.

The only "prophet" who ended up poisoned by one of his warmaking's victims.

Mohammad, pedophile, slaveholder, terrorist, thief, warlord, plagiarist, plunderer, and rapist.

Sure, there's a real role model.

(Other than the devil, I mean.)

If they want martyrdom we should send them some of Jim Jones Kool-aid, a delicious refreshment for those hot summer days when one wants to become metaphysically challenged. One drink it all it takes and they'll be on their way to the land of raisins.

Mixes well with Mecca-cola too.

"They are happy. They only want martyrdom. They don't want to go home"

Who are we to deny them this last request?

Go ahead and martyr yourselves, guys. Blow up your mosque. We won't mourn your passing.

I have pointed this out before, but martyrs are not killing themselves for Allah. They are doing it for themselves. There are two main types of martyrs.
The horny little devils who seek the illustrious 72, because they cant get a womam, or are not satisfied with the ones they have.
And the psychotic, the easilly led, the mentally challanged, and the stupid. Mostly you can combine all that, and come out with a jihadist.
The common denominator is that each and every one knows they may not get into heaven. This is their biggest fear and paranoia. So they seek to insure it by martyrdom. This is not to glorify Allah, but to glorify thenselves. It is the grossest of materalism, because they dont mind killing others to achieve it...

duh_swami,

It also is the result of their having no regard for life, even their own. Martyrdom is not something you're supposed to seek for yourself. If you do then it's not martyrdom. It's suicide.

They should hose down the mosque and students, with diluted pig fat. There will then be no desire for martyrdom, as they will be unclean :)

They want martyrdom, we enjoy killing them.
Works for me! ;-)

I dunno for sure, but I'm willing to bet that alot of the suicide kids are the result of a youths desire to do good in the world. The need to make a mark and help the world.... you know the whole altruistic thing. You put that together with Islam (see your local Imam.) and you have a recipe for disaster. Then their twisted spiritual leaders, (seems the more radical the more holy,) use this youthful enthusiasm to further their political/religious agendas, by making statements in the form of mass murder.
This betrayal of their own youth, seeking spiritual enlightenment, guarantees these scum a special place in hell.
Of course a large number have their own reasons or sicknesses, but to kill your most enthusiastic youths, seeking to do good...is one of the greatest sins I can imagine.

Unfortunately, they're buying tickets for their young people as well. They instill in them a contempt for knowledge, beyond the words of the Koran, and adoration of death for its own sake. It's probably a reason the Muslim world never advanced much beyond the 12th century. It remained static for centuries until the Western world learned there was black gold under them there sands.

They only want martyrdom...

Maybe they are getting their wish...

Several loud explosions have been heard at a mosque in the Pakistani capital where armed Islamic students have been resisting a siege by security forces.
At least 16 people have died in recent clashes at Islamabad's Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) complex.

Pakistani authorities have sent troops and police to seal off the mosque and have urged its students to surrender.

The mosque has been at the forefront of a vigilante campaign to enforce a form of Islamic Sharia law in Pakistan.

Its students have kidnapped police officers and people they accuse of involvement in "immoral" acts such as prostitution.

Cleric captured

It is not clear what caused the explosions in the early hours of Thursday morning, as reporters were being kept away from the site by police.

The explosions were followed by a loudspeaker announcement calling again on those inside to surrender.

"...herded onto trucks..."

Music to my ears.

The newspapers here reported this morning that over 800 had been arrested and over 20 killed. 17 females were picked up by their families and had left the mosque.

Time to send in the Orkin man. I hear he is quite effective at cock-roach elimination.
