Canada: Radioactive devices disappearing at alarming rate

Keystone Mounties Alert: "Radioactive devices disappearing at alarming rate," from CTV.ca News (thanks to HotAir):

Radioactive devices -- some of which have the potential to be used in terrorist attacks -- have gone missing in alarming numbers in Canada over the past five years.

A new database compiled by The Canadian Press shows that the devices, which are used in everything from medical research to measuring oil wells, are becoming a favoured target of thieves.

At least 76 have gone missing in Canada over the past five years -- disappearing from construction sites, specialized tool boxes, and generally growing legs and walking away.

Some of the devices could be used in a "dirty bomb," where conventional explosives are used to detonate nuclear material, spreading the contamination over a wide area, said Alan Bell, a security and international terrorism expert from Globe Risk Security Holdings....

"It's come to the fore over the last couple of days but it has always been there. We've had this problem. It's only a matter of time before terrorists use a dirty bomb process to attack the world," Bell said.

[...]

The CP report comes in the wake of the release of a federal study that said the detonation of a small dirty bomb near Toronto's CN Tower would send radiation out over a four kilometre area, causing economic devastation and slamming the city's emergency medical services.

Bell said such reports could actually help motivate terrorists to strike the city.

"I was surprised. Why tell the terrorists where to place the device? This is the ramifications of the weather, this is the area that's contaminated or affected. I thought it was irresponsible to do that."

He said terror attacks around the world have become more sophisticated in recent months, and "it's only a matter of time before they gravitate to using nuclear material in their bomb box."

Yes.

I saw a Nova program called "Dirty Bomb" a few years ago. It was quite surprising the number of radioactive materials that are in common use.

Here's the program transcript.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/transcripts/3007_dirtybom.html

One of the surprising things is that the producers were able to locate old rusting grain sterilizers in the former Soviet Union that still contained dangerous levels of Cs-137, an intense gamma source.

Here's a money quote:

NARRATOR: U.N. investigators have established that the former Soviet Union is littered with forgotten cesium chloride. Unfortunately, no one knows whether any of it has already fallen into the wrong hands.

Perhaps a radiological device is in our future.

Almost all the mosques in Canada (80%) are Saudi funded.

They must be shut down.

Jihadis must be marginalized.

Not getting guaranteed aid and comfort from the local umma.

Canadians are far too trusting and Naive, i should know i am one. we are NOT prepared in the least for this. Canadians feel love and respect from all around the world but simply don't get it when it comes to Terrorism and Islam's goals . they think that it is the US and the UK that is always going to be the target and that we are somehow immune , hello we are fighting in Afganistan, they hate us too! we are sooo wrong it scares me. IMO we are overdue for our taste of the REALITY of Islam's definition of love. i'm sad that it may come in the form of a Dirty bomb.

MoBlows,

Don't feel lonely. In general, I think a great many Americans are growing complacent about our safety.

I live in Central Florida, ten miles from Disney World, and I wouldn't work for Mickey Mouse if I got fired from my job tomorrow. It isn't hard to visualize a filthy terrorist placing a dirty bomb in "Cinderella's Castle".

I'm not a sociable person, and I've always felt sorry for people who have to plaster smiles on their faces every day, as part of the uniform. Now, I'm starting to fear for them, and for our visitors. And for myself, of course--never let it be said that I don't have a selfish bone in my body!

I'm also frustrated. The only friends I have are the ones I spend nine hours a day with, and I'm not allowed to warn anyone, even subtlely (sp?). The last time I tried it, I got a dressing down from the PC police.

Radioactive Material Stolen In Statesville, NC

15 December 2005: Two stainless steel tubes containing a total of two millicuries of Americium 241 was stolen from a locked Siemens Medical Solutions USA vehicle last Friday while it was parked at a restaurant in Statesville, NC. The theft was reportedly discovered and reported this past Monday. According to the state Radiation Protection Section, residents in the area have been advised that the material, if handled improperly, can pose a potential health and safety risk. The radioactive sealed source is used for quality control testing of equipment in nuclear medicine facilities. Siemens Medical Solutions is offering a thousand-dollar reward for the return of the sealed source.

I recall reading about this a couple of years ago..can only wonder how much the Jihadists have accumulated. Americans need to be extra vigilant with respect to BOTH borders...that's the sorry truth. We're importing Muslims by the gazillions here. (On another thread, I've noted how the Federal Politicians are intent upon easing/speeding up/facilitating?rubber stamping the immigration of Muslim "Herr Doktors" into Canada -- this is to appease the Islamists who keep screaming that too many Pakistani "doktors" drive taxi cabs.)

This little example contains 38 milliCuries of Americium-241 and Cesium-138. That works out to 1.4 million atoms splitting every second, per device. The half-life of Americium is 432 years. These gauges are everywhere and are commonly used by high school dropouts on construction sites. They are being used by construction crews in the Middle East.

It wouldn't be just the city that's hit which would suffer the repercussions. The neighboring cities would also experience major population influx because everyone would be fleeing.

Think Hurricane Katrina. Food shortages, looting, crime, lodging shortages, etc...

If a reporter wants a good story, send a Freedom Of Information Act request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission asking for a list of missing and stolen moisture-density gauges for the last few years. When a gauge goes unaccounted for, the nuclear licensee has to report it to the state or NRC, depending on the situation.

There is a solid public paper trail, the amount of missing or stolen radioactive material would cause your head to spin, and there are lots of colorful examples. A good one happened a couple of years back when a gauge bounced out of a truck and was delivered to the police station in a shopping cart by a passer-by. The police station went on lockdown as they thought it might be a nuclear bomb.

As an aside, the gauges are sometimes returned to the owner. The thieves take them out of the back of pickup trucks and try to pawn them. When the pawn shops say no, the thieves get spooked by the radiation warnings on the side of the case and drop it back at the laboratory.

one thousand and one nights -the Hero is always a thief - so, the Thief of Baghdad is afoot, and a good bet to win big time - Ah, all the world is awash with Muslims. If only we had loved the Crusaders more..,

On the bright side, there's the potential for some great comedy here, a la John Candy and Dan Akroyd. If they attack somewhere in Quebec or in Eastern Ontario, the OPP or the Surete du Quebec could end up arresting them for not shouting "Allahu Akbar" in French.

Keystone Mounties, eh? Yup.

It is a sad reality, but it will inevitably come down to having a major catastrophe that will kill several thousand lives.
The enemy within are the PC types, "intellectuals", and all the Dhimmis and Muslim apologists, both Muslim and non-Muslim.

However, the positive outcome is that their arguments will be instantly shut down and ignored - at the cost unfortunately of innocent peoples' lives- and we can then start the all out 4th Crusade in earnest with nary a concern for the damages on their turf.

Islam has its' "moderates" that have had their opportunities to neuter their own nutjobs, and since we cannot discern nutjob from anyone else, they all will get painted with the same brush. And plenty of people will die in the process. At least the "world overpopulation" criers will be pleased. :/

Islam needs to take full and complte responsibility for the actions of not only the nutjobs, but the slack arses that are choosing to not actively shut down and denounce these Jihadists, and not reforming THEIR "religion".

The end result is that we are all the victims and we have the right to NOT BE; which inevitably leads to proactive measures that will equal or surpass the carnage wreaked on all of us by them in the name of their "religion". They alone bear the burden of cleansing it, lest we go in and clean house on our own. Only one of these methods will leave a larger number of Muslims standing after it's all over. So it would be in their best interest to get at it immediately.
And again the blame needs to be placed firmly where it belongs: The Ummah.

Hey MoBlows, as a Canadian I also feel your pain. Canadians in general feel like everybody wants to be like them, unfortunately there's no reality to this feeling.

Whether we are in Afghanistan or not doesn't make any difference, we are a target. The Canadian mindset is in for a rude awakening as I believe we are going to feel the jihadist sting sooner than later.

Let's hope I'm wrong.

MoBlows said this:

they think that it is the US and the UK that is always going to be the target and that we are somehow immune , hello we are fighting in Afganistan, they hate us too!
_________

MoBlows, you've been reading JW for a while now, and I'm sure you know that you (Canada) are not a target merely because you're fighting in Afghanistan. You're a target because your country lacks the words "Islamic Republic of" in front of its name. You're living in an infidel country, populated with infidels and run by infidel law. THAT is why Canada is a target. Please don't buy into the LLL media hype that Canada is a target simply because they have troops fighting in Afghanistan.

And I used to believe that it would take one more terror attack to (sadly) get the world on target: The problem *IS* islam, and we need to get an old fashioned crusade humming. However, seeing Britain's brand new PM get up there and refuse to lay the blame at the muslims' doorstep, refusing, even, to admit this is a global war on terror, dashed all hope that some Free World leader would have the balls to actually stand up to the monster that is islam. If you can have multiple near-miss terror plots and STILL sit there with a straight face and say islam/muslims is not the problem, then we are doomed.

Hi, i remember a while back JW ran the story of Alan Johnston, the journo kidnapped in Gaza. Now that the issue has been resolved, im rather perplexed by JW's lack of coverage on the matter. Heres some info, Alan Johnston was freed following a concerted effort by the Islamic group Hamas and a reglious edict(fatwah) issued by an Imam. Hamas as you all know were democratically elected by the Palestinians, but democracy was stabbed in the back by our neo-con and zionist friends. Fatah undemocratically obstructed Hamas's right to power and were forced out of the Gaza Strip by Hamas, in what was an amazing military achievement. Also for an attack fought with machine guns, Hamas and Fatahs conflict resulted in less civilian deaths(callateral when done by west, terrorism when its by muslims) than most "precision" Israeli air strikes, infact precision is an accurate word to describe israeli strikes on civilians.
The streets of Gaza are now under the control of Hamas, the party the Palis(who dont exist) voted for, and Gaza is now peaceful and relatively stable, untill the Israeli war machine next decides to unleash some suppressed anger,(something to do with 50 or 60 years ago) I apologize for the Alan Johnston issue not being resolved in the manner which im certain spencer and you lot wanted, may you forgive us for not giving you the bloody ending you hoped for, but im sure this ending is the one most appreciated by Johnston and his family.

I would have thought Canadians got a harsh dose of reality when the plot to blow up the Toronto Stock Exchange and behead the Prime Minister in Ottawa was thwarted.......by the Mounties, who are not completely clueless.

But it seems this has already been forgotten. Canadians in general are very easy going, even complacent. I don't know what it will take to wake us up.

ImNoDhimmi, don't worry, all will be well, Jack Layton of the NDP wants to run over to Afghanistan to negotiate peace with the Taleban. I say let HIM go over there himself & good luck to him! LOL

Posted by: sounder [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 5, 2007 9:48 AM

I wonder how many Muslim doctors might be accumulating and stockpiling radioactive materials used for medical research, diagnosis and treatment?

Posted by: RBLA [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 5, 2007 10:02 AM

Sounder -
I almost wish the Taliban would kidnap Jack Layton just to shut him up ! Talk about your no-brain, tree-hugging leftist dhimmi. He's one of the worst.

"ImNoDhimmi, don't worry, all will be well, Jack Layton of the NDP wants to run over to Afghanistan to negotiate peace with the Taleban. I say let HIM go over there himself & good luck to him! "

Unfortunately for Jackie, since he has no discernable male parts the niqab/burka will necessarily be donned at the airport. Just like Dhimmi Pelosi had to do when she went to the ME.

Posted by: HardBody [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 5, 2007 1:35 PM

HardBody, you would think the twit would put his brains in gear before his mouth. Words (sound bites) are cheap. Action requires guts, resolve and brains.

I wonder just which one of the 5000?? Taleban Jihadists he expects Canada to negotiate with?

Suggest we should send him over, take McDoughNut with him, would keep him busy doing something productive for awhile, like finding all the Jihadists to figure out which one is the Grand Poohba.

Posted by: sounder [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 5, 2007 2:37 PM

I wonder if there's enough support in Canada for a political party that actually gives a damn for its citizens security and right to peaceful existence?
