Pakistan military assault on mosque continues: at least 58 dead

Lal Masjid Update: this could spell deep and lasting trouble for the Musharraf regime, and could ultimately become a rallying point for the forces advocating Sharia in Pakistan.

"Pakistan military assault on mosque continues; at least 58 dead UPDATE," from Thomson Financial:

ISLAMABAD,Pakistan (Thomson Financial) - Pakistani troops continued their assault on a pro-Taliban mosque in the heart of Islamabad today, sparking fierce gunbattles which left at least 58 people dead.

After nine hours of heavy fighting, the mosque's main cleric was barricaded in the basement with some women and children, the army said. Militants armed with rocket launchers and machineguns were firing at troops from the minarets.

The military confirmed that it has rescued 27 women and three children, including the wife and daughter of mosque chief Abdul Aziz.

'We rescued them from the militants. There are three children with them. They were taken hostage by the militants but the troops managed to get them out,' chief military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told reporters.

Earlier several women in burqas and around 30 children escaped from the fortified mosque when the dawn attack began but hundreds are understood to still be inside as soldiers went through the compound's 75 rooms one at a time, facing bitter resistance.

Arshad said around 50 militants and eight soldiers were confirmed dead and at least 15 soldiers were wounded.

Fifty militants surrendered after they were given a final chance during a break in fighting.

What we should be doing to Saudi funded mosques in the West.

Legislate them closed.

And if resisted, raze them to the ground.

Enough of these pukes from the seventh century.

Assalamau Laikum all,

I’m sitting at home in Lahore & am watching this horrendous saga unfold on Geo; it’s just a crying shame, it’s also insane watching Ghazi on the phone with his mother dying in his arms and he is reciting what he believes is his last message to the world.

My heart goes out to the orphans trapped as hostages in Lal Masjid who are caught in the crossfire. Red masjid is turning red today with the blood of these orphans, and the fauji jawans, and there will be no winners in this battle.

Even now though the Mullahs are asking a small question “who will be classified as a shaheed in this scenario? Is it the militants, the innocent students or the army and security officials, all believe that they stand on the “right” side and with Allah SWT.

I mean why are they even asking this question? We all are muslims and we are taking the life of our own brother and sisters. Its awful.

No matter what the views of the Kuffar here are today, it is a colossal human tragedy and a sad sad day.

In all this mayhem and killing of all those innocent people from both sides, Ghazi hasn’t himself been killed so far. I suspect he will be captured alive and then given a pardon after a while under pressure from or deal with “ulema”…I hope not.

For the 1st time peoples are raising questions….are we finally seeing the natural culmination of what Zia started 25 years ago?....surely he did not envisage this?

Already this Islamabad saga is feared to bring some serious repercussions in the form of violent activities throughout Pak. Geo says that some infuriated madrassa students at Batagram went on a rampage of aerial firing which brought forth a sense of fear and insecurity among the locals. There are also reports of violent protests from Swat and Bannu.

May Allah SWT keep Pakistan stable especially Lahore.

Naseem, above, reveals a tone, and a literacy, that was not previously on display. Perhaps I was wrong to take the "female Ahamadi in Lahore" at face value; perhaps she, or a not impossible he, does the police in different voices.

On another, more important note: the murder and mayhen at the Red Mosque provides the perfect opportunity for Gordon Brown, and George Bush, to simply put a "temporary" halt to all visitors, tourist, temporary, student, and those who have managed somehow to acquire a Green Card in a lottery or otherwise, from Pakistan. At this point, with the red red Red Mosque in peoples' minds, such an act will be accepted -- "for the purposes of public safety." Let that "temporary act" cotinue in force. Let other countries, where similar Muslim murder and mayhem will inevitably arise, be subject to the same rules. Those who might object -- in the ACLU or assorted Islamintern-infiltrated NGOs -- will be surprised at the public's not only tolerance, but approval, not only approval but delight, at such actions being undertaken at long last -- and being merely the first in a series of sensible acts of Infidel self-defense.

It is absolutely paramount that the Musharraf government keep these radicals under control, Pakistan is a nuclear country that cannot be allowed to succumb to these Al-Qaeda influenced Muslims. As ugly as fighting and war is,repercussions or not, the consequences of allowing radicals to gain any control of a nuclear country, let alone create an continiously growing haven for Al-Qaeda types is extremely more deadly.

Posted by: Mackie [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 10, 2007 9:23 AM

Pure speculation.

There has been a bitter nuclear standoff between India and Pakistan. If Pakistan turns from our friend and ally (good guy) to nuclear-powered Al Qaeda (bad guy) in the blink of an eye, there’s a pretty good chance that the black helicopters take to the air.

What happens if a stable nuclear standoff becomes very one-sided overnight? One thing I know is Condelezza Rice would be giving lectures on the importance of being nice. She would stress the need to identify a set of Founding Mothers and Fathers for a hopeful new Pakistan.

This could be the start of the end of Pakistan as we know it. It was an artifical made country just like Yugoslavia and Iraq. It will implode soon and very soon. What had happened should remind the non-Muslims, Jews and Christians in a special way what we are up against. Remember what was said about Ishmael in Genesis that everyone will be against him and his decendents. As I had said on another thread, the president of Pakistan is living on borrowed time. So is Pakistan.

3cwt of black sack cloth can do that to you when it's hanging over yer napper. One must consider though the detrimental effect of the vitamin D deficiency due to wearing the Burqua....if the rickets don't get you the weight of the sack cloth will. Bandy legs must be the end result either way.

I'm not necessarily one to tend to agree with Naseem, but I almost do about this being a tragedy...though I'm leaning more toward travesty.

If El Presidente had spent more effort on eradicating these jackasses 6 months ago, rather than worrying about his image, there wouldn't be 30 girls buried in the mosque (maybe more?), 30 others dead, and who knows how many more before it's actually over. And there wouldn't be 10 year old girls begging for "martyrdom" for this wretched belief system.

Posted by: Godefroi [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 10, 2007 1:27 PM

Sorry, Godefroi...I disagree with you, even though I appreciate the sentiment.

I think NO MATTER WHAT we do or not do, this kind of thing would happen.

Why?

Because it ALWAYS DOES.

And 1 man, hell 1 country, hell 30 countries COULD NOT stop this.

The best we can do is keep ourselves from suffering the same fate.

Hell, that may be ALL we can do.

War is coming, my friend, to a town near you. Prepare for things to get much, much worse.

No, it's Islam. Sheesh. After 1400 years of taking their own brothers and sisters' lives, not to mention the infidels', you'd think they'd be used to it by now.

I just want to go on record to say how badly I feel about the Red Mosque. Whenever innocents are killing innocents for killing innocents in revenge for killing innocents, it is a tragedy. If only there were something we could do to stop all the Muslim-on-Muslim killing. So much senseless pain and suffering in the name of Allah. Oh well, time to go see what's on the telly.

"the mosque's main cleric was barricaded in the basement with some women and children"---?????

A tower of strength and resolve as a witness to his community!

What was he doing down there? Hiding under some young girls burka?

Sounds like Waco to me!

Around here just the other day had some Presbyterians firing rocket launchers and machine guns from their steeples. Happens all the time here lately.

LOL sarc, sarc, sarc.

Is it the militants, the innocent students or the army and security officials, all believe that they stand on the rightside and with Allah SWT.

They are all "right" - they all stand on the "right" side of allah.

Now the real question you should be asking is "which side is allah on". Is he on the right side or the wrong side?. If allah is on the wrong side, it does not matter which side of him they are.

Your question though, does reveal confusion about the way things are working out in the lands of Islam. Muslims are killing Muslims with such ferocity and in such large numbers, that I'm not surprised that you have doubts. Good. Doubt is the first step towards knowledge.

For the 1st time peoples are raising questions;are we finally seeing the natural culminatio n of what Zia started 25 years ago?....surely he did not envisage this?

Not Zia. Dont blame Zia - he was a mere man. This is the final culmination of the work of Mohammed.

Take heart Nasseem. Start to question Islam - you will have no alternative but to leave it.

Robert wrote (?):"this could spell deep and lasting trouble for the Musharraf regime, and could ultimately become a rallying point for the forces advocating Sharia in Pakistan."

It could but didn't Musharraf do the right thing?

"Ghazi Abdul Rashid killed in action".
The "action" was he was trying to get into his burqa and slip away with the rest of the women when a sniper blew his brains all over the wall, making he red mosque really red.....
