Is he dead? This re-release of old material only reinforces that impression. "Bin Laden in video calls for martyrdom," from CNN:
(CNN) -- Osama bin Laden stresses the importance of martyrdom for Muslim causes in a videotape that purportedly contains a 50-second message from the al Qaeda leader.The 40-minute videotape, whose audio was being translated from Arabic by CNN, was intercepted before it was to appear on several Islamist Web sites known for carrying statements from al Qaeda and other radical groups.
The videotape was made in the last four weeks, but the clips appear to be old, said Octavia Nasr, CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs. There is no indication of where it was shot, and CNN cannot verify its authenticity.
Bin Laden, with a body guard standing directly behind him, is looking down slightly in the video, appearing to address an audience below, which is unseen.
He says that the Prophet Mohammed wanted to be a martyr, and that is a worthy goal for every Muslim.
"So be alert, be wise and think. What is this status that the best of mankind wished for himself? He wished to be a martyr. He himself said, 'By him in whose hands my life is! I would love to attack and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred.'
"So this whole broad life is summarized by him who was inspired by God, the Lord of the heavens and earth, praised and exalted is he. This glorious prophet who was inspired by God summarized this entire life by these words. He wished upon himself this status. Happy is the one who was chosen by God as a martyr."

He got what he wished for and I think he's quite dead. This guy was such an egomaniac that he would be everywhere if he go the chance. My guess is he died 2001-2002. But the issue here is not Bin Laden. The issue here is the utter destruction of Al Qaeda. They must be utterly destroyed, and if that means smuggling nuclear or biological weapons into their "safe havens" and giving them exactly what they would give to the "Kuffar"-then so be it. They do not understand any other language than that.

I have seen the video - this phrase "Osama bin Laden is seen in a videotape aired by the al-Jazeera television station on October 7, 2001" refers to a stock image clip that CNN used for web news story, which is not the same as the image on the video. It may be old - but I don't think that phrase was intended to be directly referencing the news story itself.
FYI OBL is referencing:
Osama Bin Laden quotes Muhammad based on Hadeeth Sunnah Sahih Bukhari, Book 52. Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad), specifically in Volume 4, Book 52, Number 54. Sahih Bukhari is a collection of sayings and deeds of Muhammad, also known as the sunnah. The specific reference states: "By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Were it not for some men amongst the believers who dislike to be left behind me and whom I cannot provide with means of conveyance, I would certainly never remain behind any Sariya' (army-unit) setting out in Allah's Cause. By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to be martyred in Allah's Cause and then get resurrected and then get martyred, and then get resurrected again and then get martyred and then get resurrected again and then get martyred."

Agreed, but that is only the beginning. Al qaeda is following the example of those who have gone before and who are still with us, the worst of the worst being Hezbollah and Hamas.
Imagine the aftermath of smuggling WMD of any type into Beirut or Gaza. The UN would be aching to run a new war crime trial with George Bush and Tony Blair (Gordon Brown would be let off the hook.) in the dock for the deaths of "innocent civilians".

Interesting that bin Laden never martyred himself. Neither did Mo - who always hung back, enthusiastically encouraging dupes to sacrifice their lives for his narcissistic cause.
Muslims - you seriously need to ask yourselves - If martyrdom is so damn great, then why is it that all of the "top brass" in Islam - including Muhammad himself back in the day, and in recent times Osama bin Laden and Zawahiri - none of them martyred themselves. Rather - they send YOU and your children to martyr themselves. Why do you suppose that is?

I agree with the rest of you that the age of this OBL clip suggests he may be dead, but there is another possibility. When it was first recorded years ago it may have been shown to cell leaders who were instructed that when it is finally released to the world, they should strike.

My bet is that those Muslims who are willing to die for Osama will tell you that he is more useful alive than dead. He and Zawahiri and the other higherups have a different job to do and they cannot accomplish what Allah has in store for them if they put themselves in danger. Allah wants them to win the earth for him and they can't do that from the grave. What would Islam have become if Muhammad had been martyred in one of his early battles? Allah would have had no one to whom he could communicate the later verses of the koran, along with the abrogations of his earlier "unalterable" words. Funny how none of Muhammad's successors ever heard from Allah.

How can the followers of this man be so stupid? If he wants so badly to be a Martyr, all he has to do is buckle on an explosive device, walk up to a Pakistani soldier, and pull the cord. He doesn't need any more permission from Allah than the six year old boy, loaded down with explosives, stumbling around a checkpoint in Afghanistan.
The truth is that both he and Mohammad prized their own asses too much to kill themselves. Besides, I doubt if eithere of them bought the crap about Paradise and 72 virgins. and they certainly weren't going to gamble their immortal souls on something they couldn't be sure of.

Osama is 'seen' at the farthest mosque by his lieutenants urging them to carry on Jihad, Osama is taken to paradise on a white horse to play with his 72 whories, Osama disappeared like the 12th imam and will reappear magically in the last days, Osama was the 'perfect man' after Mo and children are told to be like him, Osama was martyred by American bombs without a scratch on his body, Osama's death was a Jewish conspiracy, Osama is seen by true believers as standing atop the White House, Osama will be reincarnated over and over again to fight the Jews and Americans, Osama's body was found in a secret undisclosed tomb with eyes open and perfect state of preservation, Osama magically appears to true believers simultaneously all over the world, Osama never died but went directly to paradise to sit on Mo's right hand, etc. In short, Osama becomes a god for these simple minded primitives believing in his magical powers.
