Maybe they were Civil War buffs, on their way to reenact the attack on Fort Sumter.
"Vehicle with explosives stopped in US," from Deutsche Presse Agentur (thanks to rocketsbrain):
Washington (dpa) - Local police outside Charleston, South Carolina stopped a vehicle in which they found what were suspected to be explosives, according to media reports late Saturday. Two men described as being of possibly Middle Eastern origin were in the vehicle, which was stopped on a highway. A police bomb squad was at the scene and preparing to examine the vehicle, a local television reported told the Cable News Network (CNN).

"possibly Middle Eastern origin?" They don't know?
The PC'ness just keeps on coming...
I wonder why they were stopped.

Middle Easterners with explosives, huh? Would these Middle Easterners be Muslims with explosives, or would they be Mormons with explosives? Of course, if Mormons with suicide bomb belts began scouring your neighborhood, you can bet the media would get their religious affiliation right the first time.

Getting interesting:
"The circumstances surrounding the pull over of this Florida-tagged sedan involves the concerns raised among Berkely deputies regarding another stop in a different jurisdiction, and that the vehicle was speeding through Goose Creek.
The deputies discovered explosives within the trunk of the vehicle. One or both of the men arrested appeared to eyewitnesses to be of Middle Eastern descent. At 3:45 this morning, a Charleston County Sheriff's EOD squad destroyed the explosives in a controlled detonation. The FBI has made public comment that there was "no immediate threat" in this incident.
Goose Creek is home to the Naval Weapons Station Charleston, which has the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig as a base tenant. Captured 'enemy combatants' have been held in this facility. NWS Charleston is also home to the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Training Commmand and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR)."

While the vehicle may have been carrying explosives, Tom Casey of the State Department stressed that there was absolutely no proof that the occupants actually wanted to blow them up, let alone proof that there was malicious intent.
It is absolutely outrageous and reprehensible for anyone to suggest a geographical basis for terror, whether the individuals are from the Middle East, Norway, Belize, or those of any other place, a clearly agitated Casey told reporters, shaking his head in disgust.
Local police in South Carolina are notorious bigots, and rumor is that at least one of the officers taking part in this arrest was a Christian male of European descent, Casey seethed, these officers need to go back to their local Waffle House and have some okra. The State Department is staffed by the best and brightest from all around the world and is here to help, this is a job for professionals.
Casey was not available for questions although he did stress the need for ongoing sensitivity training.

The State Department has a message for White House candidates wanting to expound on sensitive diplomatic issues: Shut up.
Traditionally silent during presidential campaigns filled with divisive foreign policy debates, the department on Friday delivered a rebuke to would-be nominees of both parties whose recent comments have complicated U.S. efforts to overcome deep suspicion about the war on terrorism in the Muslim world.
It is absolutely outrageous and reprehensible for anyone to suggest attacks on holy sites, whether they are Muslim, Christian, Jewish or those of any other religion,» a clearly agitated Casey told reporters, shaking his head in disgust.
To somehow suggest that an appropriate response to terrorism would be to attack sites that are holy and sacred to more than a billion people throughout the world is just absolutely crazy,» he said, denouncing «any suggestion that the defense of the American homeland or the defense of American interests would ever justify attacking holy sites.
Projection, humor, sigh.

It is hard to tell anything from the terse press release but it could have been and I certainly hope it was, a surveillance. I am always hopeful that the authorities are on top of the situation but most often it turns out to be a dumb traffic stop.

Why would Bangkok News quote CNN, when there is no corresponding CNN story to be found online? Hmmmm.
Here is a LINK to a more local report which addresses Elric66's concerns:
Police close S.C. highway after suspicious items found in vehicle | Sunday, August 05, 2007 GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - Authorities closed a highway outside Charleston for more than five hours Saturday night after police found explosives in the trunk of a car, broadcast outlets reported. Federal officials said there was "no immediate threat."Law enforcement officials closed the road about 7 p.m. after the traffic stop in Goose Creek. Television stations reported that two men riding in the vehicle were detained.
Goose Creek is home to the Naval Weapons Station, which houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held. The traffic stop took place about 5 miles from one edge of the sprawling Navy weapons facility, according to WCSC-TV.
Julie Johnson, assistant special agent-in-charge for the FBI in Columbia, said the FBI was still trying to determine whether a crime had been committedbut that there was "no immediate threat" related to the traffic stop.
Johnson said the FBI was working with state and local agencies, and that they were going to be on the scene for a long time, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported on its Web site early Sunday. She would not answer reporters' questions.
Berkeley County sheriff's Lt. Vince Lombardo told WCBD-TV in Charleston that deputies found suspicious items in the trunk of the vehicle that was stopped.
A reporter with WCBD-TV said she saw a robot remove something from the trunk of the car, but that the item was not immediately moved from the scene.
South Carolina law enforcement Chief Robert Stewart told The Associated Press that his officers were on the scene, but that the FBI was handling the case and he did not elaborate.
Goose Creek, with a population of about 30,000, is located about 20 miles north of Charleston.
The local authorities knew where to look, what to look for (with a robot) and determined it was serious enough to close the roads. Can't help but wonder if CAIR's 'sensitivity training' has anything to do with the FBI's difficulty in determining 'whether a crime has been committed'.

Happens all the time...fuget aboud it. 'Don't worry, be happy'. It's just a very small, teeny weeny, tiny, dinky little, very few, jihadists with evil intent. In fact there are only three. Abu Mohammad bin Muhammad, Abu Muhammad bin Mohammad, and their brother Mo. Mo is the brains of the outfit. It seems like there are more terrorist acts than three guys could do, but nope there are only three, it just seems like more because they move very fast.
We are only fighting three jihadists, but these are the toughest three guys we have ever fought.
But you dont have to worry about it, you can still go to the mall, our guys are fighting all three of them 'over there' so we dont have to fight them 'over here'...See ya at Starbucks...

The PC is getting worse, originally the MSM had used Muslim in their announcements on TV and now its just two suspects, etc.
The result is a news snippet so sanitized that it would make the editors of Pravda or Tass blush in envy.

This had to be either local cops screwing up a federal surveillance OR local cops stumbling upon suspects that SHOULD have been under federal surveillance. Either way, it sure doesn't seem like a PLANNED take down. The lack of info available lends itself to make me believe the latter, as the federal "PR" person probably has the weekend off and it is taking the sub some time to concoct the story about "how everything is under control" and "No immediate threat here!". OK, so tell me, why does the RED CROSS set up shop at a traffic stop?.......ANYONE???????????

This had to be either local cops screwing up a federal surveillance OR local cops stumbling upon suspects that SHOULD have been under federal surveillance.
It appears to have been the latter, according to MSNBC. (But what WAS the "suspicious" item that caused the search?)
Two men were detained after police found a suspicious item in their car during a routine traffic stop for speeding near Charleston, authorities said Sunday.
Down in the MSNBC article, federal officials later said there was “no immediate threat.”
Yeah, and there was also "no immediate threat" when Atta killed the pilot of a commercial airliner and announced to the passengers that they were "returning to the airport".

OT, but not.
I just saw on Barnes & Noble online a book that has just come out - "The Al Qaeda Reader," edited by Raymond Ibrahim, and the description of the book is RIGHT ON! Check this out:
"Ibrahim's translations of these documents reveal an ideology THAT CALLS FOR A RELENTLESS JIHAD AGAINST NON-MUSLIM "INFIDELS," REPUDIATES DEMOCRACY IN FAVOR OF ISLAMIC LAW, STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF MARTYRDOM, AND MOCKS THE NOTION OF "MODERATE" ISLAM."
ain't it the truth? The Goose Creek Jihadists are, of course, just following said ideology.

It is of course best if the police keep their lips buttoned, but a number of posters on this and other sites have raised the question of what the "Two men described as being of possibly Middle Eastern origin" were doing which attracted the attention of the police.
It is an interesting question.
Last I saw on the subject, the incident was described as a routine traffic stop.
In any case three cheers for the vigilant cops.

While on the topic of apparently suppressed news stories...
I mentioned this one the other day and still have seen nothing to clarify.
____
A mother and 2 young daughters were murdered in their home near Atlanta on Thursday. They were originally from Kenya. It was known that the mother fled Kenya to protect her daughters from female genital mutilation threatened by a "religious sect".
That's about it as far as the news goes.
Now, the practice of that barbaric procedure is not isolated to Islamic cultures and there is no evidence muslims are involved in this, but, I cannot figure out why there is nothing else being reported on this story. The police will not reveal further information.
There have been autopsies and nothing released about them. Talk show host Niel Boortz speculated the other day that he would not be surprised if those autopsies indicated the procedures were performed during or after their deaths. Would that not tell us something about whether this was related to mom's flight from Kenya?
Are the police NOT releasing information to prevent "backlash" upon the of the muslim community or prevent offended sensibilities?
Something stinks about this case. The public has a right to know whether these were Islamic related honor killings.

Here is about the best I have found so far:
For followup see also:
Flopping Aces has a good roundup from news sources. There seems to be a tight lid on this story with the news stories containing only the barest minimum of information.
Michelle Malkin updates with an interesting tidbit which could be another reason this area might be targeted:
Law enforcement officials closed the road about 7 p.m. after the traffic stop in Goose Creek, home to the Naval Weapons Station. The station houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held.
Riehl World View Dan has a good roundup including this update: According to the AP, the two men are still being held at the scene 7 hours later and the bomb squad is going to “demolish” a suspicious device.
Sister Toldjah is also covering this story and links to a blogger caught in the detour. She also zeros in on the Naval Weapons Station being home to the brig where enemy combatants have been held. I think this is interesting, but this base would be a far more valuable target because of the ordinance stored there.
Reliapundit of The Astute Bloggers highlights that the so-called “routine traffic stop” was really a “tip” from another jurisdiction.
The Jawa Report also likes the brig angle.
Blogs of War has a good roundup with quotes from various local media. John Little also notes how tight-lipped authorities are being:
I just got off the phone someone from the Naval Weapons Station. “Nobody has any comment” is all I could get out of them. It was a very annoyed “no comment” at that.
Not much is leaking out but it still sounds like there’s something to this story
