Debbie Almontaser, principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy, the controversial public Arabic school set to open in Brooklyn (about which Daniel Pipes has much illuminating background here), has resigned -- just days after her dissembling explanation of "Intifada" t-shirts.
From FoxNews (thanks to James):
NEW YORK — A New York City principal who came under fire for controversial comments about an "intifada" T-shirt that seemed to condone terrorism has resigned. On Friday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg accepted the resignation of Debbie Almontaser, principal of the Khalil Gibran International Academy, an English-Arabic school set to open next month in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Almontaser had come under fire for comments she made to the New York Post about an "Intifada NYC" T-shirt that is sold by an activist group that shares an office with the Yemeni-American association that Almontaser represents.
Before condemning the T-shirt message's connection to Palestinian terrorism, Almontaser told the Post that "intifada" means "shaking off" and the shirts represented women "shaking off" oppression.
The comments infuriated the city's United Federation of Teachers president, Randi Weingarten, who called the message "war-mongering."
Yep.

Yes, the principal has stepped down -- she was an outspoken supporter of violence. But what about closing the school? I don't think taxpayers should be required to put forth public funds to support religious schools.

How many other language/ethnic schools are there in the NY school system? This one is for students of arabic background, what's the name of the school for Irish students? Or the name of the school for Asian students?
I seem to be missing the point as to why the NY taxpayers are supporting a madrassa disguising itself as a public school.

I guess some principals are stupid enough to believe we all have blinders on. If this sorry excuse for an educator truly believes the BS coming out of her mouth, now that she has resigned, she should pursue her true calling in life, sweeping up after horses in parades.

OT, but when I clicked on Paul Weston's name above to see if he has a web site (I really liked his post), I came upon the following must-read, article.
THE BIG STORY THAT DISAPPEARED
"To recap, Britain’s first Muslim MP is also Britain’s first ever politician to stand down in the face of death threats; threats uttered by followers of the Religion Of Peace who sympathise with the Islamic savages involved in the most horrific racial murder in Britain’s recent history, one of whom, to boot, was also the first “Scotsman” to be convicted of racially aggravated murder.

A google image search of the name Debbie Almotaser yielded the following:
I deleted everything but the actual sites in the interest of brevity. She is either shown on ULTRA-liberal sites like amnestyinternational and others like npr, Thirteen[pbs] and of cfourse the nytimes..
Alternatively, she is featured on a number of sites that inform about islam and its most dangerous and cunning protagonists among us.
I just got done reading thru a bunch of these and I am revolted that this person almost became principal at this school. Once again a case of the FAST jihad threatening to derail the SLOW jihad..
But not to worry there will be plenty of Dhliberals to help get it back on track. Thank God the usually 100% Liberal Randi Weingarten remembered that she is Jewish [as are a sizable number of the students in New York] long enough to open her mouth and speak up. This is a very welcome sight to behold.
Time to choose sides and STAY THERE, Ms. Weingarten!

I guess we'll be seeing Randi Weingarten sued by CAIR for being racist/Islamophobic?
Definitely a small but needed victory. It'll be interesting to watch and see what Almontaser's replacement does.

An excellent article called "The Dangerous Islamist Leftism Of Dhabah (Debbie) Almontaser And The Proposed Khalil Gibran School In Brooklyn" was published at the Hyscience website back in April. It's well worth reading...
http://www.hyscience.com/archives/2007/04/the_dangerous_i.php
Incidently, it is an insult that New York would name a school for Muslims after the Khalil Gibran. After all, Gibran was a Maronite Christian mystic from Lebanon who spent most of his life in the United States. Not only was he strongly pro-American but his works are banned in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iran and many other Muslim countries.

Of course the ACLU isn't expending any energy stopping religion in schools--unless that religion is Christianity. St. Louis has at least one muslim charter school (Malcolm X Academy). I wouldn't be surprised if other cities had these, also. The school receives state and Federal education grants.
Can you imagine a Jerry Falwell Academy, or a Pope Pius X Academy? Why do we put up with this?

Exactly. This principal is gone, soon to be replaced by one who is a little bit more circumspect about speaking openly about his/her true beliefs.
The good news: the infidels are waking up to what Islam really is about. The bad news: the Muslims will learn to hide their beliefs and feelings from the infidels until they reach a more advantageous demographic position.

"Before condemning the T-shirt message's connection to Palestinian terrorism, Almontaser told the Post that "intifada" means "shaking off" and the shirts represented women "shaking off" oppression".
More lies. Islam is patriarchy in overdrive. For example, a Muslim woman is prohibited from marrying a non-Muslim man, but it's OK for a Muslim man to marry a non-Muslim woman. This implies that a woman belongs to the man's Muslim klan-family. It implies that women are breeders for Islam. (If the CAIR-fascists don't like such criticism-that's too f-ing bad-LOL.)

Yes, and "jihad" means "struggle" only pertaining to a person's personal faith.
Before 9/11, if one said "religion of peace" you'd guess it was Mennonite or Buddhism.

sheik yer'mami, did I see boycott info on your blog? Wherever I saw it, it struck me that the sharia-compliant companies ( I remember caribou coffee, yakima sports racks and car carriers and church's chicken) included several that were companies that billed Medicare and Medicaid. It seemed to me that could lead to fraud depending upon who was heading the companies.

Boot every Muslim the heck out of our nation.....make them known they are unwelcome. Don't be so kind to them. Do not buy at any store run by Muslims. Buy only gas at stores where Americans work. Buy food prepared by Americans. Tell Muslims to take their bread shops and stuff them. Do not shop at any place they work.
Stop the Muslim from coming in and keep the pregnant out. There is not one single Muslim doing this nation any good. If Democrats don't like it..they can move on out as well.
Their intention is to take America from within....now what do it take to wake us sleepy heads up! Why are they coming in to this nation..who the hell is letting them. Lets stop it. Take back our nation from those moronic hounds from hell. We have to do it now or never. or we going to face bloodshed like we have never seen. We got families to protect...time to stop those "beasts".
If our government cant get their act together...boost them from their seat of power. And put in people who will keep those bastards out!. Sorry...folks..im sick of those Muslims.

"...it is the teachers unions that have caused the decline in the quality of education American children have been receiving over the last couple of decades.....it is the truth...."
exsgtbrown,
You're absolutely right there. I used to vote for every bond issue floated for public education because I believe education is critical to our countries future. Then I realized that almost every public school I've ever seen was far from derelict, in fact, just about all of them were beautiful, state-of-art-buildings.
Yet students in these schools are getting piss-poor educations. Most could't point out Mexico or Canada on an unmarked map. Most know more about Soujurner truth, an illiterate 19th century, Black Woman, than they Know about our second President, John Adams.
And you can forget about the American revolution or Civil war, except to discuss oppression of some kind. All history began with the civil rights movement in the 1960s. George Washington was nothing compared to Martin Luther King.
I realized that even if every student in every public school in the United States got straight As tomorrow, they wouldn't in any way be educated. Brainwashed? Yes!, Educated? No!
In no way will I support brainwashing by voting for school bond issues. When teachers unions are out, and true educators are in, They'll get my money.
I'd rather see schools fall down than to have them teaching the cuirriculums they teach today.

I'm willing to bet the farm that Almontaser's reference to women's "shaking off oppression" is code for the fact that the USA is not yet under Shari'a, which, for Muslims, means that our society is, to them, oppressive. Of course, by this twisted reasoning, Muslim men are also oppressed here in the USA and everywhere else where Shari'a has not yet replaced secular codes of law. Knowledgeable individuals, such as Pipes, should have raised this and Almontaser should have been pressed for an explanation as to just how women, to her way of thinking, are oppressed here, and if the absence of Shari'a law is, to her, a form of oppression.
