What the heck is an "unlimited cash reward"? Is the Imam Syed Mohammed Noorur Rahman Barkati going to give the killer of Taslima Nasreen all the money in the world? Meanwhile, he demands that she be deported and threatens to set up a roadblock in front of her home.
And why all the threats and terrorizing? Because she "exposed Indian Muslims to ridicule and contempt" and defamed "Islam and the Prophet." It doesn't seem to occur to the Imam Syed Mohammed Noorur Rahman Barkati that he might deal more effectively with whatever threat to Islam he thinks is coming from Taslima Nasreen by refuting what she says, or at least debating her and making his case while she makes hers.
But in India as in the United States, Muslim spokesmen who take umbrage at statements by non-believers don't seem interested in debating their opponents and taking the opportunity to demonstrate the truth of what they're saying and the falsity of what their opposition is saying. Instead, in a manifestation of utter intellectual bankruptcy, they resort to threats. Legal threats instead of death threats here -- for now at least.
An update on this story. From Rediff.com (thanks to all who sent this in):
Charging her with defaming Islam and the Prophet, an Imam in Kolkata on Friday declared "unlimited reward" on the head of Taslima Nasreen, the controversial Bangladeshi writer. Taslima was attacked in Hyderabad last week.Speaking at a rally after the Friday prayers, Syed Mohammed Noorur Rahman Barkati, imam of the Tipu Sultan Shahi Masjid, also demanded that the writer be deported from the country in a month.
"If our demand is not met, there will be an unlimited cash reward for whosoever kills her. The United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre and the Left Front government in the state will be responsible for the consequences," he told the gathering at Esplanade, in Kolkata.
'If you harbour Taslima and Rushdie in India, then drive away all the Muslims from this country,' a banner at the rally said.
Alleging that Taslima had exposed Indian Muslims to ridicule and contempt, the imam threatened to organise a road block in front of the writer's residence in Kolkata after the month of Ramzan.

There's no debating with primitive people. Islam is the ultimate reactionary ideology because it transports its adherents back to the days of tribal loyalties, magical beliefs and violence over discussion.
It's not just Geico that didn't realize that cavemen still existed.

'in a manifestation of utter intellectual bankruptcy, they resort to threats'
Intellectual reasoning is out of the question in a belief system which is rooted in psychosis and superstition. Rational exploration ia anathema to such a paranoid mindset and is itself perceived as an enormous threat to its very existence and identity. Islam is a death cult that is terrified of death....the death of its own delusional structure. In other words it suffers from a fear of life and truth.

So, correct me if I'm wrong: the Indian government has no problem going after one little writer but death threats, incitements to murder, and physical attacks on the writer are OK. Is that correct?

Actually the imam making this threat should be indicted for making death threats. But the ruling leftist party coalition doesn't want to jeopardize muslim votes.
If the same threat was issued by a Hindu Cleric, he/she will be immediately booked and jailed before trial. Rightist parties that question this hypocrisy are labelled as hindu fundamentalists by liberal parties and liberal media.
Essentially politically right leaning parties are compared with fundamentalists Imams issuing death threats. Unfortunately the same thing is true in USA. Any individual or party critisizing fundamentalists are labelled bigots. A good example is Robert himself. How many in media actually look at his viewpoints objectively?
God Bless USA. I pray god to prevent USA from Dhimmitude.

'...or at least debating her and making his case ...'
No can do. No way, no how. Never.
Many vehement, self-professedly proud Muslims appear to sense that they've been sold a pig in a poke. For a non-Muslim to point this out to them, in any way, is intolerable.
Islam is not a natural state of being for any modern civilized human. It has to be continually propped up, coddled, excused, mollified, aggrandized. A house of cards, every combination of which is a losing hand.

Oh yes, we can live with that. In fact, why dont they just go instead of making threats.
As for Rushdie, we have even given him a knighthood, so on that basis, Muslims should leave Britain. Will they go? Hell no! Does a parasite voluntarily leave the host?

Since Islam's "case" is based in the plagiarisms of a pedophile warlord and slaveholding terrorist, what sense can be expected from its most militant adherents?
This is exactly how one should expect Islam to behave.
Bluster, threaten, and kill.
Just as Mohammad did.

Isn't it against the Law to make a death threat against another person?!
I'd like to see this eemam arrested and put on trial for his incitive actions.
Once they see that's the reaction of the rest of the World when they pronounce their violent threats then these barking dogs will have to simmer down a bit.

Taslima is getting railroaded by islam in a rush to judgement. it would appear that her defenders are few.
this is how islam takes upon itself to supercede the law of any land, provided islam has achieved a sufficient demographic percentage in a country.
this is how islam calls for unlawful acts (murder, harassment) because islam considers itself superior to "man's laws," in that islam considers itself to be the sole administrator of "god's laws".
the imam calling for Taslima's punishment should be held partially responsible for anything that happens to Taslima, along with any muslim following the imam's orders.
this ill will directed towards Taslima by islam, again demonstrates that islam is not authorized to hold any political authority, and certainly not the calling for anyone's death.
the free expression of Taslima obviously was threatening the stability and harmonious consensus of the imam's pfeifdom, so the imam recommends Taslima be killed. this is disgusting.
putting a bounty on Taslima is nothing but mafia rule and should be dealt with in no uncertain terms by the Indian government.
the imam's efforts to circumvent free speech demonstrates that islam will be nothing but trouble for India, and the deporting of sharia supremacists would do India good.
defaming the tyranny of islam should be encouraged. the ridicule and contempt of islam for the imam's behavior against Taslima is an unfettered right of one's freedom of speech, an inviolate right.
the criticizing of unlawful islamic acts such as incitement to murder and harassment should be expressly permitted without restrictions in any free nation.
this calling of muslims to violence is how islam exerts it's influence on a beseiged country like India, by inflaming muslims, and then taking over a country through chaos, by islam conveniently providing a solution to that chaos which islam created in the first place.
to allow subversive islam to exist at all is the first mistake of a nation. to keep islam contained and restrained is a tall order for any nation, because when perceptive people like Taslima start standing up for the principles of freedom by vocalizing the absurdities of islam, the persecution from islam starts. where is the government of India in protecting the free speech and expression of Taslima?
Imam Barkate should be arrested. how else will India maintain the supremacy of the rule of law over the rule of islam?
imams do not speak for god. they are just pompous and bellicose in the cause of rallying muslims against the principles of freedom, so that islam can take over the country and world. then, by killing people who stand for freedom, like Taslima, islam thinks it is doing "god" a service.
who will stand up to a bully like islam? it will have to be jesus christ when he returns, appearing like the lightning which extends from east to west in the sky.

"If you harbour Taslima and Rushdie in India, then drive away all the Muslims from this country,' a banner at the rally said."
Hmmm... Since most international terrorist are Mohammedan.... It stands to reason that every country with issues with the Jihadist should immediately hire both Taslima and Rushdie to live in their country as an antiterrorism measure. I’m sure we can come to an international agreement on who gets the pleasure of keeping these individuals and for how long each year.

What these imams fail to realize is that their fatwas and diatribes are helping but Taslima's books on the bestseller list. They are helping her without even realizing it.

Not to appear redundant, but I'll email my song 'The Apostasy of Taslima Nasrin' to anyone interested...
Request at oriana_tribute@yahoo.com
I scored some beautiful Violas in the song, and interjected into the mix a very cool South American acoustical instrument called a requinto (historically meant to be strummed, by I decided to finger-pick it to create a dreamy, ethereal feel).
The lyricism is my take on Taslima's story. What a remarkably provocative woman she is.

A woman is a threat.
A woman talking and writing is a threat.
A woman criticising Islam and speaking in public about it is such a threat that it merits a death sentence.

will the Indian government charge this muslim cleric with intention to kill another person? is it okay to issue death threats and not be punished, or as long as your muslim, the government just knows muslims cannot control themselves.. you see muslims will be muslims,, yeah killing, maiming, is all part of being the pious muslim!

I am reminded of a line from Khaled Hosseini's book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" (recommended)
Nana said, "Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman."

How can imams be forced to take responsibility for their preachings and exhortations.
It's obvious that imams get killed in internecine disputes, but not by us generally (Israel did pack in one of these bastards in Gazastan).
Should we take them out ? or is it better to just continue ridiculing them ?

wow...sounds like the islamists death cult purveyors are more insecure than even WE thought, based on such a ridiculous reaction of self-righteous indignation, which is anythiing but warranted.

PEN, the writers' group that campaigns against censorship and the prosecution of authors and journalists, doesn't report actions specifically concerned with Islam but searching its twice yearly news letter country by country throws up numerous examples.
A search of the site under the term 'Islam' produced 25 articles, concerning a dozen cases:

Talima Nasrin's troubles in Bangladesh get are discussed elsewhere on the site.

No. He'll send them to the USA or to any EUropean country where he will hook them up and teach them how to get on the local jizya dole.

You're way too optimistic. Sad reality about Indians is that too many of them believe in the 'Hindu-Mussalman bhai-bhai' excrement since independence, and all of it isn't simply a case of being fed by the elites - you see that too deeply rooted in the pop culture as well. If what you said was true, not only should the Congress (let alone the Left) be a pariah on India's political scene - but the most anti-Islamic parts of the Sangh Parivar (Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena) ought to be winning every election with a landslide, what with Jihad being one of the top issues, be it Kashmir, Hyderabad, Left Bengal, et al. Never happens.
But I do wish the banner at the rally was for real. And seeing Muslim vs Left fighting in India is the next best thing to watching Muslim on Muslim violence.

Looks like it's time to suggest to the folk who organise the Sydney Writers' Festival, that it might be worth sending that prominent Indian/ Bengali woman writer, Ms Taslima Nasreen, an invitation - all expenses paid - for next year's Festival,
Since this year's Festival featured Ms Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who spoke to sold-out sessions, it appears that the Festival organisers might just be brave enough to give a platform to Nasreen.

"Alleging that Taslima had exposed Indian Muslims to ridicule and contempt, the imam threatened" etc, etc.
- - - - - -
When are these micro-brains ever going to figure out that THEY themselves, with their puerile fatwas and moronic whining about "discrimination" anytime a normal human refuses to behave as if Sharia and the Caliphate were already established, are what bring ridicule and comtempt upon Islam, and upon Muslims in general? In true malignant-narcissist fashion, each and every one of these imams (and how tiresomely many of them there are!!) is willing to sacrifice each and every one of us non-believers to prop up the 1400-year-old myth of the "Perfect Man" prophet and his ridiculously self-serving religion.
