More Shi'ite-Shi'ite Jihad -- and undoubtedly still more to come. By Robert H. Reid for the Associated Press:
BAGHDAD - Fighting erupted Tuesday between rival Shiite militias in Karbala during a religious festival, claiming 51 lives and forcing officials to abort the celebrations and order up to 1 million Shiite pilgrims to leave the southern city.
Security officials said Mahdi Army gunmen loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al- Sadr fired on guards around two shrines protected by the Badr Brigade, the armed wing of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council.
Residents of Karbala contacted by telephone said snipers were firing on Iraqi security forces from rooftops. Explosions and the rattle of automatic weapons fire could be heard during telephone calls to reporters in the city 50 miles south of Baghdad.
In addition to the deaths, security officials said at least 247 people were wounded, including women and children.
The clashes appeared to be part of a power struggle among Shiite groups in the sect's southern Iraqi heartland, which includes the bulk of the country's vast oil wealth.
It's naturally a little hard to achieve stable self-government -- which requires restraint and compromise -- when everyone professes a divine mandate to take everything by force.
Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said entrances and exits to Karbala "have been secured and more forces are on the way from other provinces." Officials said buses were sent to evacuate pilgrims from the city, which includes some of the world's most sacred Shiite shrines.
Gunfights also broke out Tuesday between Mahdi militiamen and followers of the Supreme Council in at least two Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad, police said. And extra police took up positions in the center of another Shiite city, Diwaniyah, after gunmen fired on a mosque associated with the Supreme Council, police said.
The trouble started in Karbala late Monday as tens of thousands of Shiites were streaming into the city for the Shabaniyah festival marking the birth of Mohammed al-Mahdi, the 12th and last Shiite imam who disappeared in the 9th century. Devout Shiites believe he will return to Earth to restore peace and harmony.
Scuffles broke out between police and pilgrims as the crowd tried to push through the security checkpoints near the Imam al-Hussein mosque, the focal point of the celebrations. At least five people were killed, police said.
Early Tuesday, crowds of angry pilgrims chanting religious slogans surged through the streets, attacking police and mosque guards, witnesses said. Two ambulances were set ablaze, sending a huge column of black smoke over the city.

Just "some" of them. How many most sacred shiite shrines are there? It sometimes seems that every other shiite town has a most sacred shrine. Who are they all dedicated to? It looks to me like islam, supposedly monotheistic, actually has a whole load of minor gods.

It's perplexing to me that Muslims can't stand back and take a cold hard look at the world Islam created, and not conclude that there's something very wrong.
The death, destruction, oppression, poverty and violence, of their world, should compel any rational person to ask a few questions.

Misogyny by the way was prevalent in Babylonian legends (as in the Tiamat vs. Marduk legend --Marduk made the roof of the universe out of Tiamat's stomach after crushing her skull!).
In fact, the ancient Mesopotamians(the Assyrians, Sumerians, and Babylonians) were enthusiastic practitioners of human sacrifice (which was performed on those ziggurats usually using sharp instruments by turbaned, bearded executioners), headchoppers, and brutal conquerors and looters of neighboring lands, and by the way they worshiped the same deity Islam worships (Baal IS al-lah under an alias).
Much of what is found in the Kuran originated in Mesopotamia. So never fear Babylon still lives.

Ya see, I've had this predicament lately, but it's proving to be more workable as we speak. Here's the easy part...

130,000-150,000 are expected, over 100 Clans, Houses, etc will be there, including from all over the world...and with over 700 bagpipers playing Amazing Grace in orchestral harmony at closing, ya never forget it. We go every year without fail.
I HAVE to go as I am one of the local Clan Chieftains (actually I'm a "clan macmutt"=multiple clans, lol).
THAT's the EASY part.
The hard part...*ugh*...
The annual family reunion (enter screams of terror here) on the same weekend. I thought I'd miss it and enjoy myself at the games instead (since it's usually 2,500 miles away anyway-no great loss).
WRONG!
They decided, since the games went on, they'd decide to have it...OUT HERE AT THE SAME TIME!!!
(my thoughts were: "Oh, HELL NO!!!! in classic Homer Simpson screaming "Oh, what a world!")
Let me fill ya in on what I'm dealing with...
Paternal side is rather orderly...My late Dad, retired USMC, #4 of 16 kids-97 cousins (2nd cousins no clue who half of them are it's so big)
Welsh, Scots & Cornwall Brits.
-siblings and all seem to care for one another, -watch out for each other, etc...not bad. When -they argue, it's like a Bartle's & Jaymes wine cooler commercial- total silent treatment. Mostly from lower midwest farmers, miners, ranchers, etc.
Bad enough, eh? That's nothing!
Maternal side...YIKES!
Group 1...German Catholics, orderly, authoritarian...as in "ACHTUNG, BABY!" mostly from mid-south/lower midwestern business owners.
Group 2...Irish & Scots Catholics, partyin wild & crazy folks, mostly from Chicago-Detroit-Cleveland-Cincinnati-Indy areas.
Hardcore rough-n-tumble blue collar steelworker types.
Group 3...Protestants, ranging from orange anglicans to mormons to pentecostals, don't smoke, don't drink, no sex...errr, something like that, lol They cover the rest of the areas.
Assembly is a shouting contest...and when they're drunk it's even LOUDer...some greetings take the form of fisticuffs, others are thrown drinks for some reason...others required police intervention.
(now ya know why I live clear across the continent, lol)
The maternal siblings love for each other equals that of a cobra and a mongoose...lol
The grudges they held since...1863(?) long grudges! (who the hell cares what happened in 1955? lol) Only thing they agree on that keeps things together is their violent & uniquely vitriolic hatred of Manchester Utd soccer team in the UK (beats me as to why-the team to beat, I presume, go figure...lol).
However, the children of the siblings, we're all best friends and have grown out of that BS. You know, the type that goes...
Cousin 1: "wtf are our parents fighting about THIS time?"
Cousin 2: "Who the hell cares...have another drink!"
We're reduced to being proverbial ice hockey referees-we only intervene when one or both fall down.
Yes, the "reunion" is more like the party from the movie Animal House.
NOW ya know why I say "Oh, HELL NO!"
They all decided they're coming to the games, too.
I'll be there too...hiding in the crowd of up to 150,000 so they'll never find me, my wife will be in close tow...let the family duke it out in front of the Marine Corp booth, the USMC will give them something to do with all that energy!...lol
Besides, they have hotel rooms so I don't have to let them in my house!
The best part? While they try to find us at home after each days events (50 miles away), We'll be hiding in plain sight, on grounds with the RV, confortably inebriated with after-dinner 18 year old Glenmorangie at the all-evening Ceilidh with the Wicked Tinkers band playin'-YES!
(Hey, any group who can play RADAR LOVE on the bagpipes & make it sound badass is worth it!-with or without electrical power-they've been known to blow transformers & play "raw", lol)

I heard there is a grand total of ONE Jewish person remaining in Afghanistan these days.
I, too, wish these groups could escape--but Western countries prefer to give asylum to Muslims instead. It's sickening.

This is what gives the lie to the idea that "Islam is Peace". I don't mean the total Taqiyya absurdity that Islam is willing to live in peace with its non-Muslim neighbors, but even the idea that all would be peaceful if only we were to submit to Islam.
Even if we were so craven as that (God forbid), it would bring no sort of peace--you see the results all over the world--Sunni against Shiite, Arab against Kurd and Berber and sub-saharan African, Sunni faction against Sunni faction in "Palestine", and Shiite faction against Shiite faction in Iraq.
Islam is ugly and violent, and any concessions will only make them bolder.
