A new Socrates? I might believe a new Hipparchus, but not a new Socrates.
From AKI (thanks to all who sent this in):
Tehran, 20 Sept. (AKI) - A research centre run by the office of the president of Iran has released a 15-page document in which they define President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the "Socrates of the Third Millenium".The document has been released just days before Ahmadinejad is due to visit New York. The Iranian president will arrive in the city on Sunday to address the United Nations General Assembly.
In the document, various speeches and letters written by the Iranian president are analysed and it concludes that "Ahmadinejad reasons and discusses exactly as Socrates did in ancient Greece, by disarming other speakers and through his sharp reasoning."
"It's mainly the irony used by the president in his dialogue with foreigners," said the document refering to letters Ahmadinejad had written to Pope Benedict XVI, US president George Bush and German president Angela Merkel.
Yes, those letters were heavy with irony, although I don't think they were in the way the Socratic Thug-In-Chief probably intended.

This onslaught risks turning into a racist witch-hunt
The renewed anti-Muslim media campaign is partly driven by a political agenda which seeks to justify war
Seumas Milne Thursday September 20, 2007
The Guardian
Britons are now more suspicious of Muslims than are Americans or citizens of any other major western European country, including France. According to an international Harris poll last month, nearly 30% of British people believe it's impossible to be both a Muslim and a Briton (compared with 14% who think you can't be French and a Muslim); 38% think the presence of Muslims in the country is a threat to national security (compared with 21% in the US); and 46% believe that Muslims have too much political power in Britain, far above the level of any other surveyed country. This week it is was an hour-long Channel 4 Dispatches about attacks on Muslim converts to Christianity; last week it was the BBC Newsnight programme's 20-minute interview with the latest defector from the non-violent Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir; the week before that it was a Newsnight special on radical Islamist books in east London libraries, complete with sinister music and a round-table debate.

I specially like the "non-violent Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir".
Islam is like the AIDS virus. It fools civilised societies into thinking that it is part of them. But this news is good - it indicates that the normal immune response of the nation is atlast kicking in.
One has to be careful though of this Guardian article. It could well be that they are trying to paint the Muslims as poor victimised souls, to neutralise the immune response.

Interesting that the European country thats gone out of its way the most to turn its country into an Islamic state has the most "Islamophobic' citizens.
What was also interesting that it mentioned America but not nations like Iran, China or Russia.

Possibly ‘disarming’ the weak and irresolute like Bush and his dhimmi entourage of Karen Hughes and that ‘Black Snake’ Condie Rice. Wonder what kind of Ramadan bash Washington has planned to cajole our gentle, resident umma this year?

It's a real shame Jimmy Carter didn't have the balls to punish Iran back in 79. He should have leveled a different city each day until the hostages were released. Because of his lack of backbone we now have a new World War against Islam and Muslims. What a stupid bastard!

Interesting Ahmedinejad would compare himself to someone who killed himself over a religious dispute at the same time he is planning a trip to ground zero with no American security detail. Oh, at 10:00 am sharp.
'I understand', he said, 'we can and must pray to the gods that our sojourn on earth will continue happy beyond the grave. This is my prayer, and may it come to pass.' With these words, he stoically drank the potion, quite readily and cheerfully.

In an old B-horror flick titled "WILLARD," "Socrates" was the name of the title character's vicious, man-eating norway RAT!! More likely, Ahmadinejad ('a mighty nut job' indeed) is the next version of THAT "Socrates" ("Socrates the Rat 2" maybe?).

""It's mainly the irony used by the president in his dialogue with foreigners," said the document refering to letters Ahmadinejad had written to Pope Benedict XVI, US president George Bush and German president Angela Merkel."
here is Amadinejads letter to President BUsh and the Americans:
"O, Almighty God, bestow upon humanity the perfect human being promised to all by You, and make us among his followers.
Noble Americans,
Were we not faced with the activities of the US administration in this part of the world and the negative ramifications of those activities on the daily lives of our peoples, coupled with the many wars and calamities caused by the US administration as well as the tragic consequences of US interference in other countries;
Were the American people not God-fearing, truth-loving, and justice-seeking, while the US administration actively conceals the truth and impedes any objective portrayal of current realities;
And if we did not share a common responsibility to promote and protect freedom and human dignity and integrity;
Then, there would have been little urgency to have a dialogue with you.
While Divine providence has placed Iran and the United States geographically far apart, we should be cognizant that human values and our common human spirit, which proclaim the dignity and exalted worth of all human beings, have brought our two great nations of Iran and the United States closer together.
Both our nations are God-fearing, truth-loving and justice-seeking, and both seek dignity, respect and perfection.
Both greatly value and readily embrace the promotion of human ideals such as compassion, empathy, respect for the rights of human beings, securing justice and equity, and defending the innocent and the weak against oppressors and bullies.
We are all inclined towards the good, and towards extending a helping hand to one another, particularly to those in need.
We all deplore injustice, the trampling of peoples' rights and the intimidation and humiliation of human beings.
We all detest darkness, deceit, lies and distortion, and seek and admire salvation, enlightenment, sincerity and honesty.
The pure human essence of the two great nations of Iran and the United States testify to the veracity of these statements.
Noble Americans,
Our nation has always extended its hand of friendship to all other nations of the world.
Hundreds of thousands of my Iranian compatriots are living amongst you in friendship and peace, and are contributing positively to your society. Our people have been in contact with you over the past many years and have maintained these contacts despite the unnecessary restrictions of US authorities.
As mentioned, we have common concerns, face similar challenges, and are pained by the sufferings and afflictions in the world.
We, like you, are aggrieved by the ever-worsening pain and misery of the Palestinian people. Persistent aggressions by the Zionists are making life more and more difficult for the rightful owners of the land of Palestine. In broad day-light, in front of cameras and before the eyes of the world, they are bombarding innocent defenseless civilians, bulldozing houses, firing machine guns at students in the streets and alleys, and subjecting their families to endless grief.
No day goes by without a new crime.
Palestinian mothers, just like Iranian and American mothers, love their children, and are painfully bereaved by the imprisonment, wounding and murder of their children. What mother wouldn't?
For 60 years, the Zionist regime has driven millions of the inhabitants of Palestine out of their homes. Many of these refugees have died in the Diaspora and in refugee camps. Their children have spent their youth in these camps and are aging while still in the hope of returning to homeland.
You know well that the US administration has persistently provided blind and blanket support to the Zionist regime, has emboldened it to continue its crimes, and has prevented the UN Security Council from condemning it.
Who can deny such broken promises and grave injustices towards humanity by the US administration?
Governments are there to serve their own people. No people wants to side with or support any oppressors. But regrettably, the US administration disregards even its own public opinion and remains in the forefront of supporting the trampling of the rights of the Palestinian people.
Let's take a look at Iraq. Since the commencement of the US military presence in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, maimed or displaced. Terrorism in Iraq has grown exponentially. With the presence of the US military in Iraq, nothing has been done to rebuild the ruins, to restore the infrastructure or to alleviate poverty. The US Government used the pretext of the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but later it became clear that that was just a lie and a deception.
Although Saddam was overthrown and people are happy about his departure, the pain and suffering of the Iraqi people has persisted and has even been aggravated.
In Iraq, about one hundred and fifty thousand American soldiers, separated from their families and loved ones, are operating under the command of the current US administration. A substantial number of them have been killed or wounded and their presence in Iraq has tarnished the image of the American people and government.
Their mothers and relatives have, on numerous occasions, displayed their discontent with the presence of their sons and daughters in a land thousands of miles away from US shores. American soldiers often wonder why they have been sent to Iraq.
I consider it extremely unlikely that you, the American people, consent to the billions of dollars of annual expenditure from your treasury for this military misadventure.
Noble Americans,
You have heard that the US administration is kidnapping its presumed opponents from across the globe and arbitrarily holding them without trial or any international supervision in horrendous prisons that it has established in various parts of the world. God knows who these detainees actually are, and what terrible fate awaits them.
You have certainly heard the sad stories of the Guantanamo and Abu-Ghraib prisons. The US administration attempts to justify them through its proclaimed "war on terror." But every one knows that such behavior, in fact, offends global public opinion, exacerbates resentment and thereby spreads terrorism, and tarnishes the US image and its credibility among nations.
The US administration's illegal and immoral behavior is not even confined to outside its borders. You are witnessing daily that under the pretext of "the war on terror," civil liberties in the United States are being increasingly curtailed. Even the privacy of individuals is fast losing its meaning. Judicial due process and fundamental rights are trampled upon. Private phones are tapped, suspects are arbitrarily arrested, sometimes beaten in the streets, or even shot to death.
I have no doubt that the American people do not approve of this behavior and indeed deplore it.
The US administration does not accept accountability before any organization, institution or council. The US administration has undermined the credibility of international organizations, particularly the United Nations and its Security Council. But, I do not intend to address all the challenges and calamities in this message.
The legitimacy, power and influence of a government do not emanate from its arsenals of tanks, fighter aircrafts, missiles or nuclear weapons. Legitimacy and influence reside in sound logic, quest for justice and compassion and empathy for all humanity. The global position of the United States is in all probability weakened because the administration has continued to resort to force, to conceal the truth, and to mislead the American people about its policies and practices.
Undoubtedly, the American people are not satisfied with this behavior and they showed their discontent in the recent elections. I hope that in the wake of the mid-term elections, the administration of President Bush will have heard and will heed the message of the American people.
My questions are the following:
Is there not a better approach to governance?
Is it not possible to put wealth and power in the service of peace, stability, prosperity and the happiness of all peoples through a commitment to justice and respect for the rights of all nations, instead of aggression and war?
We all condemn terrorism, because its victims are the innocent.
But, can terrorism be contained and eradicated through war, destruction and the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocents?
If that were possible, then why has the problem not been resolved?
The sad experience of invading Iraq is before us all.
What has blind support for the Zionists by the US administration brought for the American people? It is regrettable that for the US administration, the interests of these occupiers supersedes the interests of the American people and of the other nations of the world.
What have the Zionists done for the American people that the US administration considers itself obliged to blindly support these infamous aggressors? Is it not because they have imposed themselves on a substantial portion of the banking, financial, cultural and media sectors?
I recommend that in a demonstration of respect for the American people and for humanity, the right of Palestinians to live in their own homeland should be recognized so that millions of Palestinian refugees can return to their homes and the future of all of Palestine and its form of government be determined in a referendum. This will benefit everyone.
Now that Iraq has a Constitution and an independent Assembly and Government, would it not be more beneficial to bring the US officers and soldiers home, and to spend the astronomical US military expenditures in Iraq for the welfare and prosperity of the American people? As you know very well, many victims of Katrina continue to suffer, and countless Americans continue to live in poverty and homelessness.
I'd also like to say a word to the winners of the recent elections in the US:
The United States has had many administrations; some who have left a positive legacy, and others that are neither remembered fondly by the American people nor by other nations.
Now that you control an important branch of the US Government, you will also be held to account by the people and by history.
If the US Government meets the current domestic and external challenges with an approach based on truth and Justice, it can remedy some of the past afflictions and alleviate some of the global resentment and hatred of America. But if the approach remains the same, it would not be unexpected that the American people would similarly reject the new electoral winners, although the recent elections, rather than reflecting a victory, in reality point to the failure of the current administration's policies. These issues had been extensively dealt with in my letter to President Bush earlier this year.
To sum up:
It is possible to govern based on an approach that is distinctly different from one of coercion, force and injustice.
It is possible to sincerely serve and promote common human values, and honesty and compassion.
It is possible to provide welfare and prosperity without tension, threats, imposition or war.
It is possible to lead the world towards the aspired perfection by adhering to unity, monotheism, morality and spirituality and drawing upon the teachings of the Divine Prophets.
Then, the American people, who are God-fearing and followers of Divine religions, will overcome every difficulty.
What I stated represents some of my anxieties and concerns.
I am confident that you, the American people, will play an instrumental role in the establishment of justice and spirituality throughout the world. The promises of the Almighty and His prophets will certainly be realized, Justice and Truth will prevail and all nations will live a true life in a climate replete with love, compassion and fraternity.
The US governing establishment, the authorities and the powerful should not choose irreversible paths. As all prophets have taught us, injustice and transgression will eventually bring about decline and demise. Today, the path of return to faith and spirituality is open and unimpeded.
We should all heed the Divine Word of the Holy Qur'an:
"But those who repent, have faith and do good may receive Salvation. Your Lord, alone, creates and chooses as He will, and others have no part in His choice; Glorified is God and Exalted above any partners they ascribe to Him." (28:67-68)
I pray to the Almighty to bless the Iranian and American nations and indeed all nations of the world with dignity and success.

NOW
DOES THIS CLUE-LESS IDIOT QUALIFY TO BE AWARDED AS WANKER OF THE WEEK
Here what Eagle says
In the very short time I have been doing this, I have seen some very nasty comments. Comments overflowing with hate. You have all seen the quotes I have put up from radical Islamist/Jihadist.
Those are just the tip of the iceberg. Seriously, it is bad out there. Some of you already know that, some of you don’t. It makes me think back to Nazi Germany, the speeches and propaganda, geared towards turning the citizens against the Jews.
I sometimes wonder about the hate speech I have seen though. I mean, do you think that normal Muslims visit those websites?? The Islamist and his buddies already know what the other are thinking, so why do you suppose they would use hate speech propaganda??
Maybe they are hoping for the same thing the Nazi’s did. That should a ‘normal’ Muslim wander in, they can sway them with their suave use of the English language.
Here’s what I wanna do, I am going to put up some comments, with some blanks in it. Some are current, some are from the 1930’s. See if you can tell the difference. Tomorrow I will break it down for you.
Some of this is hard to listen to, but it is worth it. I will be leaving out part of the comment so as to not give it away as to whether this is now or then. Some may seem evident, but lets see if I can disguise them enough.
The number of X’s mean nothing.
(I have filled blanks the with red , and below each comment I have entered the source Shiva )

Thanks to you, I have better knowledge on Sunni Islam. For them, the Quran, the Hadith and the Sira have authority.
But the one area that is grey to me is Shia Islam. It seems to me, that it is just the Quran. If that is true, you lose all those violent verses in the Hadith. In theory, the Shia would never kill apostate Muslims because they would consider the Hadith has no authority. Or is that not true?
Do the Shia have any other sources of authority other than the Quran?
Thanks

"Ahmadinejad reasons and discusses exactly as Socrates did in ancient Greece, by disarming other speakers and through his sharp reasoning."
Ahmadinejad reasons and discusses exactly as Muslims normally do, by irrational and illigical reasoning based on the twisted and immoral theology of Islam.
Unquestionably, he is the Islamic Socrates. Only a Muslim could make sense of anything he says.

(PLEASE POST THIS ANNOUNCEMENT AT OTHER WEBSITES)
The U.S. Senate Project (an initiative to increase congressional awareness of the nature and goals of jihad) currently has 90 volunteers in 41 states.
WE ARE STILL SEEKING ADDITIONAL CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL 50 STATES, ESPECIALLY THE FOLLOWING 10:
Connecticut
Delaware
Mississippi
Montana
North Dakota
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Vermont
West Virginia
Wyoming
THE PROJECT: We're looking for people in every state of the Union who would be willing to purchase, from Amazon or any other source, a copy of Robert Spencer's new book Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is And Islam Isn't and mail it, on an agreed upon date, to one of the senators in your state. We want to get the book simultaneously to all 100 senators, in order to send a strong message. If we get more than two people per state, books can also be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives.
If you'd like to participate (or you just have questions), please write to me at traehnam@yahoo.com under the subject heading "Senate," and tell me the state your senator represents, and a nickname. No need for your real name. And I will never share your email address with anyone, not even with other volunteers for this project.
And visit jihadawareness.blogspot.com to get more info on this project and to leave comments other volunteers can read. You can also see there the growing list of participants in this project, and the states their senators represent. I've also designed a graphic that might amuse. Scroll down when you get to the site.
Once we have at least two people from every state, we can agree on a mailing date and then each of us can mail a copy of the book on that date.
Right before each of us mails the book, we’ll issue a press release to media outlets in as many states as possible, and in that way announce and explain the mailing. And perhaps we can come up with some other ways of maximizing the effectiveness of this project and gaining as much positive attention as possible.
One of the project's volunteers suggested contacting Rep. Sue Myrick, who started the Anti-Jihad Caucus in Congress. I'll try to coordinate this project with Rep. Myrick. I've also been calling various congressional offices to get advice on how best to proceed.

Dar al-harb:
Also to someones asking the difference between shia and sunni ,the Koran and the hadith beliefs, does it really make a difference?
Yes it does. Authority is everything. It is whole basis of Roberts books. The reason Sunni Islam does not fall apart, is because of where Sunni Muslims look for their whole structure on life.
And it is the reason the West such problems.
If those books did not exist, we would not be facing the problems we have now.
You have the cart before the horse.
You think that we face Islam and Muslim independent of those books, as if they are incidental. Wrong. They are the very thing that have shaped Islam and Muslims and are continuing to do so. They are the entire West's woes, not the humans. The humans, in one sense, are mere containers for those perverted ideas. To totally destroy Islam, you would have to wipe out the books or there would have to be a complete loss of credibility and I think that is unlikely. There will always be some Muslims who look at the books rather like "crack cocaine" and think some form of "pure Islam" will be the answer to the worlds problems.
Last century we face communism.
But we faced it because of Marx and Engels writings, not because communists arose in a vacuum.
It is not soldiers like Napoleon and Alexander the Great that are dangerous. They get old and die. It is religions and philosophers that are potentially very dangerous as they can turn people into soldiers over a very long period of time until humans become disenchanted with the ideas. Ideas last longer than people. In the Bible does it not say, "All flesh is grass but the word of the Lord stands forever"? Communism lasted less than 130 years with a few rumblings here and there as it is now slowly dieing. Islam is still going strong 1400 years later.
Hence, working out the authority structure of Shia Islam is important. Very very important.
We need to understand how it ticks in much the same way as how Sunni Islam ticks. It will give better understanding of how Iran ticks and in these uncertain times, that is important.

What IS all of this PC rot about not being able to "hate?"
There is nothing wrong with hating what is evil!
I suppose it's fine and dandy for everyone to "hate" Nazis. BUT, for some odd reason, we can't hate Islam/Mohammed/Koran. ALL of which deserve to be hated! How about "despise?" Can we despise Islam/Mohammed/Koran (for many, many good reasons)? Is that acceptable?
I'm so sick of all this "you can't hate" cr** I don't know what to do. I HATE IT!!
And, yes, someone please get rat-faced Holocaust-Denier-Israel-Destroyer Ahmadinejad some hemlock.

Pelayo. Good grief, you're right. Deepest apologies to the Stooges. That was most thoughtless of me. Porkie Pig comparisons came to mind, but no...that's not fair either. I'm really at a loss...Stalin? Pot Pol? no...nothing funny at all about those guys. Anyway, here's to a nice cheery warm cup of hemlock for our new Socrates, if the clueless PC croud hasn't already drunk it all.

Elric, Shiva,
Did you see his first archived posting on his blog, his "open letter to Muslims"?
http://eaglespearlsofwisdom.wordpress.com/2007/07/29/an-open-letter-to-muslims/#comment-1191
What happened? That was only like two months ago.
Or is that the rub? Is that the 180 degree shift in his position, his enlightenment, as it were.
What do you guys think?

Socrates?
I assume they're cryptically hinting that Mahmoud is about to be poisoned by his own people.
Which would be the only Socratic parallel between these two polar opposites.

"If anything in general can be said about the philosophical beliefs of Socrates, it is that he was morally, intellectually, and politically at odds with his fellow Athenians."...[wikipedia]
Hmmm, ImANut, that could be the case.

*What is wrong with the islamic republic of iran? What third millenium? A third millenium after what? This is not islamic calendar they are talking about. Are they kafirun? Comparing a muslim to a polyteist as a compliment?

wrathofasma: Thanks for the link to the John Derbyshire article in National Review Online. What struck me most as I read it was the tone of superiority Derbyshire conveyed, specifically that his reservations about Islam are reasoned and correct but those of someone like Robert Spencer (and, by implication, rubes like us who post here at JW) are over the top, not quite gentlemanly and ultimately a bit lowly all around. Way too smug for my taste I must say. And way too guilty of not seeing just how much the Islamic religion is a dagger pointed at the heart of almost every Western institution. It was instructive reading, though, because it revealed just how much has yet to be done to convince the West en masse that Islam is bad news in a way no other major religion is. Derbyshire's half-cluelessness is a special type of ignorance that also must be effectively answered if the West is to survive.

If this grinning monkey in a ill-fitting suit is the "Socrates of the Third Millennium" then I guess that must mean the Jimmy Carter is the the Delphic Oracle reborn and Madeline (Oy, I'm a Jew!) Halfbright must be the current incarnation of Isis.

Actually Socrates was killed in a political dispute. I studied ancient Greek at university and Scorates' Defense as recorded by Plato [The Apology] is one of the first texts I read. Socrates was "prosecuted" for things a character in Aristophanes' play named after him said. It would be like prosecuting Bush for something a depiction of him in a political cartoon said. What Socrates did was to refuse to cooperate with a kangaroo court and attempt to go out with dignity. I DOUBT Iran's "Socrates" will show that kind of dignity if he faces the kind of trial he deserves.

Hipparchus? Robert, methinks you give him too much credit. Maybe Caligula with an earache; that is, if Iran ever gets nuclear warheads.

When Ahmadinejad speaks at the United Nations, American and other Western delegations, should whip out sun glasses in anticipation that a sudden burst of light might fill the hall, causing temporary blindness, or even permanent damage to their eye sight.
That's the explanation they should give the world press.

The imbecile dwarf is now 'socrates'? Too much!
Will Islamics ever see themselves for what they really are? idiots praising their own idiocy. But if you're 14 centuries retarded, I suppose it might make sense for them.
What ignorant uncouth fools we must suffer in this new millennium.

Re: Iran: Ahmadinejad is 'Socrates of third millenium', says president's office
He's more a bizarre sock-puppet of the third Reich. The fact that this runt wearing platform shoes could become head of state anywhere and dream of having a nuclear arsenal is not a good sign for the future of the human species. If we can steer through this age of weirdness and propaganda, he will be viewed like the puppet Chickie. Say hello to the sock-puppet of the third millennium.....

awake,
He is like Mo. He makes things up as he goes along. He has also lied that I said all Muslims are evil and/or terrorists. He now blocks me so no one can see me defend myself. You asked him to put forth my post saying it and he cant do it.
I do disagree with you though that he makes his views known. He hasnt but in the vauguest terms. You ask him anything specific and he wont answer.
You can visit him on his other blog. He even has his cowardly Muslim friends there that ran away because I challenged some of the things I said. I even dared ask his Pali friend if she voted for Hamas.

....and he has a problem with this?...perhaps he should look at Middle Eastern history and see what has happened when Muslims take over....or perhaps he should look at current events and see what happens when Muslims appear....
...Muslims really hate it when infidels know the truth about Islam...
....it is worth repeating...Ban Muslim Immigration...

Tehran, 20 Sept. (AKI) - A research centre run by the office of the president of Iran has released a 15-page document in which they define President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the "Socrates of the Third Millenium".
Robert: You jest, surely. I notice that this piece of garbage was announced AFTER Armandhandjob arrived in New York City to address the Uncivilized Union (UN); methinks that this clown ORDERED the research center's brown-nosing boot-lickers to make that announcement: it's the way tyrants operate, to glorify themselves...just like Hitler and his henchmen did during World War 2.
Nice joke, though.
