"Unfortunately, Muslims in the West must live with the local laws on freedom of expression." But for how long?
An update on this story. "Bangladesh detains cartoonist for offending Islam," from IslamOnline (thanks to Paul):
A Bangladeshi cartoonist has been detained for drawing a caricature offensive to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).Bangladesh witnessed mass protests after the publication of an anti-Islamic caricature by cartoonist Arifur Rahman.
The offensive cartoon, published in the 431st issue of Alpin, a weekly supplement of Bangladesh daily Prothom Alo, led to a one-month jail sentence to Rahman after the Bangladeshi Home Affairs Minister ruled that his drawings hurt Muslims’ feelings.
Islam was introduced to Bangladesh in the twelfth century by Sufi missionaries, and subsequent Muslim conquests helped spread the noble faith. Even though religion is practiced in a moderate manner in Bangladesh, the government bans any insult to Islam.
According to the BBC, the cartoon featured a conversation between a cleric and a child and ended with a joke about Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) name.
The head of clerics of Dhaka’s main mosques filed complaints against the cartoonist who was arrested from his residence last Tuesday and handed over to the Tejgaon police station.
Rahman violated Section 54 code of criminal procedure and under such emergency laws; the government has the authority to detain people without charge if they are deemed to threaten national security.
Meanwhile, Prothom Alo published an apology on its front page for the “unfortunate publication”, withdrew the copies of that issue from the market and fired the cartoonist.
However, many in Bangladesh did not view such measures as enough and demanded that the newspaper be shut down....
Muslims might be a little relieved that those who offend their religion get punished in some countries as this is not the first time that involves the publication of anti-Islamic cartoons....
Western media often claims that such offensive cartoons shouldn’t anger Muslims and that their publication do not violate the laws of “freedom of expression“.
Unfortunately, Muslims in the West must live with the local laws on freedom of expression, Ibrahim el-Zayat, of the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe, told the BBC....
"Magazine banned for 'Mohammad cat' cartoon," from Reuters (thanks to JE):
BANGLADESH has suspended publication of a magazine after a cartoon it published this week triggered protests by Muslims who said it was offensive to the devout. The suspension of publication of the Alpin, the weekly satire magazine of leading Bengali daily Prothom Alo, was ordered as some Muslim groups called for a street protest after Friday noon prayers, and a march towards the Prophom Alo office.
The daily has apologised for the cartoon in which a small boy referred to his cat as "Mohammad cat".
The protesters said it was a deliberate attempt by the cartoonist to ridicule Islam's Prophet Mohammad....
Police said that to avert any violence over the cartoon they would strictly enforce emergency laws banning protests and rallies.
"We shall impose a tight watch around Dhaka's Baitul Mokarram mosque from where the protesters would likely start their march," said a police officer.
Police have also deployed outside the daily's office.
Prothom Alo published a third apology toay and appealed to all to take the printing of the cartoon as a mistake.
On Wednesday police broke up a street march by hundreds of Islamists in Dhaka, demanding "death to the Prothom Alo editor" and "hang the cartoonist".
A government statement on Thursday said: "The magazine in its 431st issue has hurt the sentiment of devoted Muslims" and risked upsetting law and order....

So even with its former good British history and influence, Bangladesh still is influenced by these retards for Mohammed.
Amazing that the fundamentalists crawling out from the gutters can have this influence.

What a whacked out cult Islam is. They get worked up to a frothing rage over some silly ass cartoons.
Cartoon rage by Muslims, however, does serve a good purpose. It points out, to anyone paying attention that is, how utterly incompatible this mass insanity called Islam is with any sane society. We need more cartoons showing 'Mo.

The daily has apologised for the cartoon in which a small boy referred to his cat as "Mohammad cat".
So it's not even a drawing of Mohammed (FPIH) as a cat, but of a cat named "Mohammed". How about one of him as a camel? At least that would be geographically accurate.

"Muhammad cat" cartoonist gets one month in jail; magazine banned"
I wouldn't be too condescending about Bangladesh. Many Western nations have so-called hate crime laws that can, and have, landed people in jail for saying the the wrong thing. And the United States is well on its way to joining them.
These laws are always billed as a means of combating hate, or protecting others from being offended. But in reality thay are intended to punish people for thinking wrong, unapproved, thoughts.
By alowing these laws to be passed, the American public has already accepted the principle that government can -- for a worthy cause -- regulate free speech.
With the influx of Muslims into Western countries, and with their increasing political clout, it is only a matter of time before we join Bangladesh in jailing people for insulting the prophet.
Why not?, we've already conceded the principle that free speech can be regulated in the name of combating hate. Isn't that the principle Bangladesh is operating under?
Don't laugh too loud at Bangladesh. People in this country are routinely charged with, and punished, for hate crimes. We just haven't gotten around to Mohammed yet. But it's comming.

"Even though religion is practiced in a moderate manner in Bangladesh, the government bans any insult to Islam."
Spot the internal contradiction.
rational had a good point. we have moved dangerously along the direction of speech regulation.
still, i viewed that particular cartoon on some site a few days ago, and, really, it couldn't be more inoffensive. so, in this case, i will not suppress my belly-laugh at bangladesh, a country that has just made itself look extremely foolish.
the best (first line of) defence against insane totalitarians is to laugh in their faces.

Razdan - "...who continue to tolerate this abomination called Islam."
Well, you're right, but what are we supposed to do? Will I get arrested if I walk around town wearing my "Bring Back The Crusades" t-shirt? Really, do I stand a chance of getting arrested for "hate speech" or something?

"The protesters said it was a deliberate attempt by the cartoonist to ridicule Islam's Prophet Mohammad...."--From the article
It's odd, this use of the word "attempt". It sounds to me as if the cartoonist succeeded, finding himself imprisoned.
Mohammedans have already shown us their willingness to kill over cartoons. It didn't take long for this cartoonist to be jugged for his "attempt" to ridicule Mohammed.
The bully has proven his meanness and his strength. It remains for the rest of the world to shrink in fear, and get those pesky cartoonists into a cell, on the double-quick.
It's forgivable for one person, even a small group, to placate and avoid the bully. The same can't be said of the whole world.

rational: In complete agreement with you on the folly of hate-crime legislation which is creeping into American law just as sharia is creeping into American society. Hate-crime legislation is the sheerest folly because it punishes motive rather than the act. Consider these scenarios: Person A is beaten to a pulp for his money, barely survives, the perpetrators are caught, tried and found guilty and each get seven years for the crime. Person B is beaten to a pulp because of his skin color, barely survives, the perpetrators are caught, tried and found guilty and each get seven years for the crime plus five years tacked on because it was a hate crime. How is such "justice" fair and equitable to person A? Disproportionate sentencing based on motive gets the government into thought control and monitoring. Very Orwellian. Bad idea. Just punish the act, regardless of motive. In the scenarios outlined above, I would have given the thugs in both crimes twelve years across the board and left it at that.

I agree with the above posters. We are losing because we are accepting islam as any other faith, whereas it is only a cult in which all the members have to imitate "uswa hasana, al insan, al kamil" and kill everybody who does not. We are losing because we have always thought that human beings are rational, and sensitive, and well, Human. This is the single reason why we have lost, are losing, and will continue to lose.

What is "uswa hasana, al insan, al kamil" ?
Thanks.

Hi bigcatgirl,
"Uswa hasana, al insan, al kamil" loosely means the perfect man; and is a reference to Muhhamad who is revered by muslims as the perfect man whose example is worthy of emulation. Robert Spencer has spoken volumes on this subject... for example,

at September 21, 2007 12:42 PM
Bigcatgirl13106,
I understand urdu, and a little bit or pharsi and arabic. I cannot translate this phrase completely, but I do know what parts of it mean. "al" translates roughly to "the". "al insan" means "the man" and also " the (perfect man)", as for "hasana", "husn" means beauty in pharsi. In brief, this line, "uswa - hasana, al insan , al kamil" means " the perfect man to be imitated (in all respects and deeds).
I am sorry I could not answer your question completely. I can speak urdu, but cannot explain the grammer. Mr. Spencer and Mr. Fitzgerald have written about this particular phrase, the phrase that is central to islam. You can visit the archives for details.
Regards,
Arjun

I found this:
"Still more disturbing to them, the most disturbing thing of all, is for Infidels to raise the matter of Muhammad as the Perfect Man (al-insan al-kamil) or as it says in a Qur'anic verse (33:21), "uswa hasana" -- the Model of Conduct for all time (the phrase also appears two other times in the Qur'an, in reference to Abraham). But it makes no sense to discuss Islam without discussing the figure of Muhammad. He dominates Islam. He is almost more important, in Muslim psychology, than Allah -- no, he is more important."

and from the New English Review:
"the Model of Right Conduct (uswa hasana), he, the Perfect Man, al-insan al-kamil, preached."

Unfortunately, we can't tell them to be quiet and take a time out. We can't make them go to their room and take a nap. They're not little crybabies. They're BIG crybabies.
They may be children, but they're children with the means and the motive and the opportunity (thanks to us, we keep letting them in) to do tremendous damage to all free societies.
Either we give in to them or stand up to them. They're bullies.

"and subsequent Muslim conquests helped spread the noble faith."
What's this? The writer is claiming Islam spread by the sword? What is he, some kind of Islamophobe?
"Western media often claims that such offensive cartoons shouldn’t anger Muslims . . ."
Actually, anger is an emotion, and people in the West aren't into regulating emotions -- just actions. Muslims have our permission to be as annoyed as they want, so long they don't by their actions try to forbid others' free expression.
"Unfortunately, Muslims in the West must live with the local laws on freedom of expression, Ibrahim el-Zayat, of the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe, told the BBC . . ."
I'd dearly love to know whether the "unfortunately" was part of el-Zayat's comment or whether that was inserted by the "reporter." If it belongs to el-Zayat, then perhaps the authorities should be checking into this Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe.

Wellington,
Good post, your A/B scenario says it all.
One last point is that you know, I know, and everyboby else should know, that hate crime laws will always be enforced selectively.
Those deemed worthy of special protection will rarely be charged with a hate crime. Only those deemed to be the oppressors will face charges of hating someone.
Political correctness, not the law, will determine everything.

Unfortunately we gave them cars, cell phones, tv, train and access to aircraft and advanced chemistry.
Unfortunately we have let them live in the west.
Fortunately we can look to history and see that governments dealt with the "Islamic Terrorism and Demographic Threat" effectively. The monarchs King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castille seemed to understand the nature of the menace, as did Prince Vlad III of Wallachia.

wow...islamists are far more insecure about their death cult being exposed for what it is than even I thought they were...wow.
Then again, his self-imposed title (meaning "praised one"-NOT his real name, which is Ubu'l Kassim, a bandit chieftain from southern jordan anyway) of "mohammed" centers around "ham"...a really big clue.
