Maryland: Six more Muslims arrested on money laundering charges -- one charged with financing Al-Qaeda

This makes 39 indictments. Will the Islamophobia never end? "FBI arrests six more Pakistan-origin suspects on charges of money laundering," from ANI (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):

Washington, Sept 24: The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested six more suspects of Pakistani origin from Maryland on charges of money laundering.

On Thursday, 11 suspects were arrested in Maryland, including nine illegal immigrants from Pakistan. On the same day, US federal officials had indicted 39 people, including some Pakistani operators of convenience stores in Eastern Shore communities, the Dawn reported.

Saifullah Ranjha, one of the defendants, was also charged with attempting to finance the al Qaeda.

Commenting on the arrests, Pakistan's Ambassador Mahmud Ali Durrani said that he did not know the details of this particular case, but similar cases in the past has shown that "American officials were often too zealous."

Durrani further said that in many cases either the charges brought against the suspects were difficult to prove or the suspects were released or offered plea bargains.

Meanwhile, Spanish officials said on that acting on tips received from the FBI, they had arrested two Pakistanis from Madrid and Barcelona.

According to police, Anar Muhammad Shan and Mehmood Sandhu, who are members of a terror group, have allegedly collaborated with their accomplices in the US to transfer money to alleged al Qaeda men in Pakistan.

The FBI, however, has claimed that no such money transaction took place.

Meanwhile, it's all about the FBI's overreaction:

These arrests have stunned Pakistani-Americans, as they fear that it would further strengthen the negative stereotyping of their community in this country.

"People are scared. It will have a very negative impact on the entire community," said Munir Ahmad, a member of the Maryland Muslim Council.

"People say that they were licensed money dealers and apparently law-abiding citizens. We don't know what happened," Munir Ahmad added.

Really? I do.

Pakistani-Americans are so sacred [sic] that even during Ramzan, they are not giving money charities to mosques, Irfan Malik, of the National Association of Pakistani-Americans who also lives in Maryland, said.

The poor dears. A few jihadist charities get shut down, and what's one to do to pay alms? Call upon charities not to finance jihad? That idea doesn't seem to enter anyone's mind.

"There are many people who must have gone to the stores and gas stations run by the suspects. Now they fear that the FBI may knock at their doors," Malik said.

After 9/11, in some people were arrested "just for standing near a suspect," he added.

Such as whom? What happened then?

39 indictments?

There's probably 139 replacement personnel already on their way, if they're not already here.

Robert,
nothing less expected from such babblers...they accuse but provide nothing to back it up...
...no different than the ones screaming bloody murder about "innocent people's "rights" taken away by the Patriot Act (implying it's a norm numbering in the thousands, when it's an aberration), only to turn up 1...ONE...that's O-N-E, that merited judicial review, and even that one turned out pretty lame.

What's next?
"But...but...they're just good ol' boys!"

laughable if it wasn't so pathetic.

Some of these people were "Illegal", besides attempting to finance terrorism. At the VERY least, if you can't prove the financing charges, deport them immediately. Our immigration laws are a joke, and the jokes on us. If you can't demonstrate you entered the USA legally, you should have NO right to stay here. Want to contest your deportation? Fine, do it from behind bars. Take as long as you want, but in the meantime, it's prison food and confinement.

Seems to be ingrained in the ideology of islam:

Alms for jihad.

Why not alms for good works ? Alms for infra structure improvement ? Alms for community service ? Or disaster reconstruction ?

Reminds one of that commercial "Where's the beef ?"

It just aint there.

YUMA, Arizona (AP) - A smuggling tunnel connecting the U.S. and Mexico was discovered after a water truck driving above it caused it to collapse, officials said.

Just makes you wonder?

Watch out! They'll sue you over bacon! They should contest their deportation from inside their homelands.. they can always come back in case the result is in their favor.

"11 suspects were arrested in Maryland, including nine illegal immigrants from Pakistan. On the same day, US federal officials had indicted 39 people, including some Pakistani operators of convenience stores in Eastern Shore communities, the Dawn reported."
-- from the article above

How did those nine "illegal immigrants" from Pakistan get here? Pakistan is far away. By what route, by what means, from what countries, possessing what documents, obtaining what false papers here, did those "nine illegal immigrants" arrive here? And as for those "convenience stores," those cash-only businesses that Arabs and Pakistanis have a particular penchant for, "convenience stores" where half the time the clerk or owner never rings up the sales -- haven't you noticed? -- thus cheating the state tax man (not to mention what fiddling with Federal taxes goes on), a special unit of the local or state police ought to be created that will do nothing but investigate these places, and their owners. They provide the money, the moral support, the comfort, the false papers, the lawyers, the local sea in which the spawn of those pursuing violent Jihad are hatched and in which they ultimately swim, and it is that sea that must be drained, in ways still dimly-perceived, or unthought-of.

"These arrests have stunned Pakistani-Americans, as they fear that it would further strengthen the negative stereotyping of their community in this country."

Muslims don't need us to strengthen the negative stereotyping of their community in this country. All they need is themselves, and the active (and sometimes passive))support they give to men like this. I wonder what kind of literature they tolerate being passed out at their local Mosques, And what kind of teachings they're hearing from their Imams at Friday prayers, and what kind of instructions their children are getting in Mosque schools?

Are we supposed to believe they're all that "stunned?"

I'll bet that for each of those arrested, there were 20 that that knew, or suspected, them of illegal activities, and they all kept their mouths shut.

They got caught because retail outlets are not the best place to launder money. A Gummit accountant can look at inventory turnover, orders from suppliers and conclude that high income is not reflected by high orders from wholesalers. Car washes, parking lots, coin laundries are more suited to money laundering because the investigator does not have a paper trail to follow. A car wash can be shut down, but it requires a month of continuous observation to count each and every car that goes through. When it is audited and it is discovered that the operation earned money from several hundred phantom customers, money laundering can then be proven. Any CPA can audit a convenience store and demonstrate that it is a source for cleaning up money.

I wasn't discussing money laundering but underreporting of revenues. A different thing.

Hi All,

It's peculiar, but every taxi driver I've met in Maryland is from the Indian subcontinent. They are mostly Pakistanis, a few Hindus, none from Bangladesh yet. Some are quite friendly. One stated that he had recently arrived in the country within the previous weeks and was working for a relative. This is another cash business that may need looking into.

My late father under-reported his income from tips.

I am shocked, shocked that anyone would conciously fail to report every penny of income. That is just un-American!

Posted by: Pelayo [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 24, 2007 10:54 PM

When I was a kid I had a paper route. I always had two or three extra papers, I also had one or two subscribers that the publisher was not aware of. Sometimes I had to buy a paper from a machine, because I certainly did not want the phantom customer to call the office because of an undelivered paper.

I certainly will not criticize a Pakistani for doing what a large number of red blooded, true patriot, WASP retailers also do, unless the money is being sent to buy bombs and bullets.

Poor, inconvenienced Muslims. I recall a time when I had never heard of Islam, and yet Muslims continue to whine.

Give me a break. Islam is causing us all to live different lives and I'm not happy about it; not happy about it at all.

If a father wants to buy 100-rounds of 9mm ammunition to defend his family in Maryland, the bullets will cost him around $15. The tax on those bullets will cost him $500. Coming soon to a jurisdiction near you.

Take a vacation to more normal states...both same boxes cost $22 out the door in NV, AZ, etc...
I recommend NC, KY, TN or GA if you're in MD.
(It's not illegal to buy bullets across state lines)

Heck, even the proto-marxist state of the peoplez republik of kalifornia isn't THAT bad...
Same box ammo is $15+ 0.0775$ tax...less than $17.

$500 is BS...for that you can travel to another state & pick 'em up & still save at least half the difference. No excuse for that...none.

MD is the exception (9 states)...not the norm (41 states)

Taxi driving might also be an interesting business to investigate. From reports in the UK, they're often the eyes and ears for men hot for honor killings.

....as the end of Ramadan nears, I have noticed the Pakistani convenience store operator is not seen for 2-3 days at a time, he leaves his wife to run the store....I have noticed younger and more physically fit Pakistanis hanging out at the store...they are not friendly and give glaring stares....they come and they go throughout the day when the older store operator is there...yesterday I observed the store operator passing some CDs to the younger ones, I noticed the cover of the CDs have Islamic printing and the word Islam in English, the photos on the cover of the CDs show Islamic fighters with AK47s and RPGs.....I think these are Islamic religious CDs....but I could be wrong....at any rate I jotted down the auto tag numbers of the younger ones vehicles and passed the tag numbers and description of the vehicles to the authorities...as usual the authorities gave no indication they were interested....but I keep doing things like this, one day such information may be useful "to the authorities"...viva la resistance......

"How did those nine "illegal immigrants" from Pakistan get here?"

A. came in on temporary visas and just disappeared into the sunset....

B. came across the Mexican border (usually just walking in) after arriving in some South American country that has lax immigration laws and lax security....

c. came across the Canadian border which is extensive and easily crossed.....getting into Canada is just as easy as getting into some leftist South American counties...

d arrived by clandestine small boat after being dropped offshore from a foreign freighter...there are many "Asian" ships traveling up and down the US shoreline on any given day....shades of Nazi sabateours from WWII landing on our shores.(which did happen)....

....we certainly need to tighten our immigration policies and we need to do a much better job of policing our borders....much better....heck, yesterday it was reported that France is deporting 25,000 illegals....the first good thing I recall France doing in a long time....it is mandatory for them to stem their violence by illegals ,, we need to do the same and we have more than 25,000 illegals...

Ban Muslim Immigration...
