More news from Kashmir. But wait a minute! Paging Karen Armstrong, who in her first biography of Muhammad compared him to Gandhi -- Ms. Armstrong, can you please explain why Kashmir's Grand Mufti Mufti Bashir-ud-Din isn't praising Ghulam Nabi Azad, instead of criticizing him? I guess this is just some more of that glorious complexity of Islam that is just beyond the ken of ordinary mortals, with only luminaries like Karen Armstrong capable of explaining it for us.
By Mukhtar Ahmad for Rediff (thanks to Ctzn):
Kashmir's Grand Mufti Mufti Bashir-ud-Din, Saturday asked Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to undertake penance for his recent utterances asking people to adopt Gandhian philosophy for worldly success. In an edict (Fatwa) issued by him, the Grand Mufti said that in case "he does not undergo penance for his utterance, his act would be considered as anti-Islam."
The chief minister had, while addressing a gathering of school and college students on Gandhi Jayanti, reportedly said while "Islam secures the world hereafter, adoption of Gandhian philosophy was the route to success in this world."
The Grand Mufti, while asking the chief minister to clarify his position on the matter, said, "Gandhi was relevant to his community but for the Muslims Prophet Mohammad was the only leader to be followed."
"The best path for every Muslim to follow for betterment in both this world and the world hereafter is the path shown by the Holy Prophet. The chief minister must clarify his recent statement in which he told people to follow the Gandhian path. He must also seek penance for his assertions," the Grand Mufti said.
Gandhi or Muhammad? I thought there was no difference, Ms. Armstrong. Please explain!

Mohammed Ali was known for his decency and decorum and fidelity. He showed his noble qualities in 1924 when he declared at Aligarh and Ajmer: 'However pure Mr. Gandhi's character may be, he must appear to me from the point of view of my religion inferior to any Mussalman, even though he be without character... Yes, according to my religion and creed, I do hold an adulterous and a fallen Mussalman to be better than Mahatma Gandhi.'

Well, isn't that inconvenient?

Christ, wasn't Mahatma a Hindu?
Oops, I appear to be mixing my metaphors. Or something.
Actually, Gandhi would seem to be a more admirable religious figure than Praise Be His Name.
I'll bet that puts me on the hit list......

Next thing you know Armstrong will be the lucky recipient of one of those fatwas of death for putting Mr. Perfect in the same boat as Gandhi.
If that would mean an end to her blatherings on the cult of death and her love affair with old Mo
then this would be a good fatwa for a change.

Mohammad = Gandhi???
What an INSULT to Gandhi!
Comparing Gandhi and Mohammad is like comparing a mountain to a pebble!
I guess the Mufti made his point well.
Gandhi is just NOT Mohammad. He's too magnanimous and civilized a human being to be compared to the man from the desert societies of Arabia.

This reminds me of an article that was on Dhimmi Watch a while ago. A recent convert to Islam in a Muslim country had helped an elderly woman and he got into big trouble for it (I think he took her to the hospital and was therefore alone with her).
Try to do something truly good and selfless and you might just get a major smack-down because you transgressed against Mohammed's "perfect" example.
