Wealthy Syrians head to Iraq for jihad

Wait a minute. Isn't poverty supposed to cause terrorism?

Of course, over the years we have presented here study after study showing that jihad terrorists are generally better educated and more affluent than their peers. Their motivations are religious and ideological. But no one wants to face the implications of that, so they ignore the data and indulge instead and fantasy-based analysis and fantasy-based policymaking. Unfortunately for those analysts and policymakers, reality always wins out in the end.

"Suicide bombers head to Iraq from Damascus," by Hala Jaber and Ali Rifat in the TimesOnline (thanks to all who sent this in):

IN a small flat in Damascus, a young man in jeans and T-shirt draws frequently on a Gauloises cigarette as he describes how he dressed his brother in a suicide belt and watched him blow up some American soldiers at a drinks stall in Iraq.

The young man calls himself Ahmed. He is 23 and he has a degree in chemistry. He knows all about explosives.

Last year, he says coolly, he took 15kg of TNT, packed it into pouches with some nails and strapped the bomb to his 19-year-old brother’s waist....

Ahmed had borrowed a drinks stall used by American convoys on the road that winds north from Baghdad past Saddam Hussein’s home town of Tikrit. His brother was instructed to grab some bottles of cola in his free hand and head for a group of soldiers taking a break from their journey.

“Go sell them some Pepsi,” Ahmed told him gently. “We will meet in heaven, you and I, and that’s a promise.”

Ahmed says his brother kissed him, turned and walked away without a moment’s hesitation.

Did he not long to call his brother back, I ask? The question brings tears to his eyes.

“He had a smile on his face,” Ahmed replies. “He knew he was crossing to a better place where he would meet his maker as a martyr.”

The emotion passes and Ahmed talks with steady self-assurance about his plans to follow his brother’s example. He, too, will take Americans with him when he dies, he says. His ambition is to blast some CIA men to smithereens.

The flat where we met was rented by a handler in Damascus, the Syrian capital, who channels aspiring “martyrs” to insurgent groups such as Ahmed’s....

So who are these bombers and why do they do it? How are they organised? And how much impact are they really making on a war that is sucking ever larger numbers of suicidal volunteers from across the Middle East into Iraq’s vortex of violence.

We tracked down three bombers in our search for answers. The first interviews of their kind with men passing through Syria on their way to die in Iraq, they confounded expectations.

These were no psychopathic loners from the ghetto, but articulate, middle-class men in their twenties and early thirties who had come from good homes and gone to university. One was a newly married accountant.

Yet all had reached the chilling conclusion that killing “sinners” would transport them to paradise. None had the slightest inkling that they might be exploited by Al-Qaeda and other battle-hardened groups which will probably use these fresh-faced idealists for no higher purpose than to sustain the most brutal sectarian conflict of our age....

Abu Ibrahim’s radicalisation came in two stages. “I had no Islamic inclinations at the start of the war,” he said softly. But when he sat with his parents watching television as the first bombs of the Shock and Awe campaign fell on the country next to his, the strength of his reaction took him by surprise.

“I felt a tightening in my chest and a feeling of personal offence and injury, as though every Iraqi woman was my mother, wife or sister, every little boy my young brother and every old man my father,” he said. “I spent all night crying in my bed, and in the morning I left the house and applied for a passport.”

He had decided to fight in Iraq. His mother gave her blessing, saying she wished for Allah to accept him as a martyr if need be but that she would never forgive him if he became a prisoner.

His father, however, was so strongly opposed that he hid Abu Ibrahim’s passport. Abu Ibrahim stole it back and joined about 400 fellow fighters in the north of the country.

He described with bitterness how he witnessed the defeat of Saddam’s forces near Mosul and then found himself detained, just as his mother had feared.

Now came the second part of his transformation into a jihadi. In prison he met Sunni clerics from Saudi Arabia and other countries. These were followers of the Wahhabi tradition of Islam which casts Shi’ite Muslims as heretics. They were also supporters of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. They idolised Osama Bin Laden and lauded the September 11 attacks on America.

According to Mohammed Hafez, a visiting professor at the University of Missouri and author of Suicide Bombers in Iraq, the Strategy and Ideology of Martyrdom, the influence of the Saudi Wahhabis is key to any understanding of the phenomenon. His study of 139 suicide bombings found that 53 were carried out by Saudis, compared with 18 by Iraqis, seven by Syrians and four by Jordanians.

The Saudis had already fought foreign jihads in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Chechnya, Hafez said. In Iraq they exploited the culture of martyrdom established by Palestinian suicide bombers. The targeting of so many Shi’ites has been consistent with their beliefs.

“Wahhabi tradition sees the ascendancy of Shia as [a] worse evil than occupation by infidels, because Shia are heretics and apostates,” said Hafez.

So it was that if the black-bearded Abu Ibrahim went ahead with his journey as planned last week, he was bound for Al-Qaeda in Iraq; and regardless of his determination to slaughter American soldiers, the chances were that he would end up being directed towardsa Shi’ite target instead.

He had no regrets about his impending death: “There is nothing stronger than my love for God and seeking martyrdom,” he said brightly.

As for his wife, he had already thought of his last message to her: “If Allah accepts my martyrdom, then I shall ensure that you are one of those I name to be salvaged and brought to heaven when your time comes.”...

“These are what I call the ‘violent intellectuals’,” said Professor Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at Georgetown University, Washington. “They are well educated and highly motivated, two important attributes that ensured success in their education and then business and which will also be useful in ensuring their success as suicide bombers.”

I'd call it brainwashing, but what's being washed?

More like a reptilian reflex than what we recognize as the cortex.

(And isn't smoking forbidden by Mohammadism? Those used-gym-sock-smelling French cigarettes are infidel-made temptations to waste money that should go to support Islam.)

Newsflash: There is NO "allah" but a pre-Islamic pagan, PAGAN, rock idol. So, you've died for nothing. NOTHING.

Oh, and Mohammed saw on his "Night Journey" that all women go to Hell...so, forget that "heaven" part too, 'k?

Imbecile. Mohammedan duped imbecile.

unrelated....

Early Sunday morning, a group entered a museum in France and fled when an alarm went off, but only after damaging a Monet painting. Presumably, they would have done more harm.

No word on who would have done this. "Youth," perhaps.

Hasn't Hugh pointed out that Europe is a target-rich environment? Or was it ... well, many people contributing to this site. As if they know something about the future.

Robert, Robert...

You know better than that.

It's not poverty that causes terrorism...

BOREDOM causes terrorism!

In fact, just the other day, I was sitting on the couch, with nothing to do, flipping through the channels. And for a moment, right in the middle for a paid advertisement for the "only bathroom cleanser" I'd "ever need," it occurred to me that maybe the right way to end this horrible ennui would be to blow up some women and children...

Thankfully, I got over the urge, but now I'm worried it might come back at any point--maybe during Dancing with the Stars, maybe during Judge Judy, maybe even during a National League playoff game.... Scary stuff.

COMING TO HUGH FITZERALD'S NEIGHBORHOOD SOON: MUSLIM ONLY HOUSING

VAUGHAN -Before dawn in this sprawl north of Toronto, McDonald's is locked and Tim Hortons is empty. The fake mountain of Canada's Wonderland, the amusement park, peeks from the gloom. Across the street looms the white minaret of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at mosque.

A speaker in the parking lot crackles and broadcasts the Arabic call to prayer. Suddenly, silent life fills the dark streets. Men dressed in the long white shalwar camise of their native Pakistan and women in head scarfs emerge from their brick homes.

The only sound is the squeak of hundreds of soles on the asphalt. At the mosque, couples separate: women to their basement prayer hall, men headed upstairs. Before sunrise on this day of Ramadan, they are coming to pray.

Welcome to Peace Village, Canada's first Islamic subdivision, where all 260 homes belong to members the Ahmadiyya sect, who flooded to Canada in the 1980s after persecution in Pakistan. It looks ordinary, with basketball nets and minivans in the driveways, until you notice the street signs: Mahmood Crescent, Ahmadiyya Avenue and Noor-Ud-Din Court.

"There is nothing like this in North America," boasts Naseer Ahmad, a real estate agent from Pakistan who dreamed up this community of Islamic dream homes (including oak stairs and central air conditioning) on the edge of Toronto. "You have a mosque, and people are walking to enjoy their faith."

The houses, with some modifications, such as increased ventilation (for spicy food) and separate living rooms for women and men, are so successful that, six years after Peace Village opened, Mr. Ahmad plans to double the mosque's size and is now selling 55 townhomes, 1,700 square feet each, for around $350,000 with a garage and a yard, as "Peace Village Phase II."

Settlers have gathered around churches since Europeans first came to Canada. Newer immigrants took over downtowns vacated by earlier ethnicities, giving Montreal a Chinatown and Toronto a Little Portugal. This is different: it is a new development for one ethnic group.

To the dismay of some locals, a demolition crew last year took down a United Church next to where Peace Village is growing. The changes have inspired Christians to reassert themselves: Across the highway, Italian-Canadians built "Vellore Woods" with a large Catholic church at its centre, mimicking Peace Village.

"The Peace Village is a profitable proposition based on faith, and on profit and loss," Mr. Ahmad says, sitting in his office in his spacious home here. "A lot of people have come to me for advice afterwards, how to put it together." The Ahmadiyya plan a similar faith-based suburb near a mosque they are building in Calgary.

The Ahmadiyya say they don't mean to isolate themselves, and they send their children to public school. Still, the nation's "cultural mosaic" is fairly monochrome in this spot: Teston Road Public School, which opened last month next to the mosque, is about 80% Muslim, and the school provides its gym on Fridays at lunchtime so the kids can kick off their running shoes, bow low toward Mecca and pray.

"Even though they are born in Canada," says Teston Road's principal, David Nimmo, "their first language is Urdu."

Naseer Ahmad came to Canada from Pakistan in 1975 and received a masters' in public administration from Ottawa's Carleton University. He worked years in advertising before helping his community build a mosque on 25 acres of tomato fields the Ahmadiyya bought by the tiny village of Teston. The mosque opened in 1992.

Mr. Ahmad, by then a real estate agent with Royal Le-Page, learned that Italian-Canadian developer Benny Marotta had approval to build homes on about 60 acres adjacent to the new mosque.

Mr. Ahmad, whose mosque was empty -- being too far from the faithful -- suggested a faith-based marketing scheme. "I provided my skills and my knowledge and my contacts."

Although Muslims bought all the houses, he insists he does not sell only to adherents of Islam. "There is no exclusion here," he says. "You come and buy the house, no problem. You want to live beside the mosque, you want to live in a predominantly Muslim community, no problem at all."

In his Toyota Sequoia V8, Mr. Ahmad gives a tour of the place. We take Bashir Street (named for his father) and Abdus Salam Street, named for the first Muslim Nobel laureate, as he speaks of his big plans: an Islamic reference library and doubling the mosque's size, to 40,000 square feet.

"Over here is going to be a TV station," he says. (Already a special cable to each home feeds Muslim television from an audio-visual room at the base of the minaret). "Then over here we're going to have a big huge guest house."

In his office, Mr. Ahmad points to other projects: "This is my Brampton mosque. This is in Cornwall. I have architects and engineers working for me freelance. This is the Calgary mosque."

Peace Village has had one dramatic impact on this area --bringing pedestrian traffic to a place known as a driver's domain. People walk to mosque, and to school. When the final bell rang at Teston Road Public School, a stream, mainly of women, arrived on foot, pushing strollers, and walked their children across the new city park, recently namedAhmadiyya Park, toward the mosque, and home. Some youngsters as young as nine walked with friends, no parents in sight.

"It's back to the way it was when we were kids," says David Nimmo, the principal, who opened this new York District School Board school in September. "Everybody is walking home. Our goal is to make this school part of the centre of the [Muslim] community." (Most kids go home; a daycare on site has just six children.)

The children's lack of English is a hurdle. "Our academic scores are low in these schools," Mr. Nimmo says, leading a tour of his shiny school, filled with children. He is helping to change that.

Two years ago, he called a meeting at the mosque. "I wanted to tell them how poorly their children were doing." When he got there, he found only a handful of parents.

"I was very discouraged, so I asked Naseer Ahmad, he got on the phone and within 20 minutes there were 300 people there. That's how organized they were." Now, he says, "they've rallied around us," and grades are going up.

Accommodating Islam is second nature at the school. Some students are fasting during Ramadan, which ends with the feast of Eid'l Fitr on Oct. 12. "Some try to fast, they get weak and headaches, we let them rest on the health bed," the principal says. "We haven't had meet-the-teacher night and we're not going to have it until after Ramadan, out of respect for the parents."

Near the mosque towers a new Beer Store, its huge facade built to mimic a foaming glass of suds. A worker there said he welcomes the Muslims. "Here it was all Italian, and other people are arriving," says Peter Drago, 22, a smiling man with a mane of hair. He moved here four years ago; since then, out of 20 houses on his block, 12 have changed into Muslim hands.

"You ask, 'Why did you move?' they say, 'I wanted to be near the mosque.' It's good. Multiculturalism is amazing."

Still, all the change in the area has rattled Frank and Rita Alonzi, who for 38 years have lived just up the road. Their farm, where they keep chickens, goats and carrier pigeons, and grow a bountiful garden with gourds, tomatoes and grapes, is now crowded by suburbia. They don't mind that their neighbours are Muslim -- they just miss their peace and quiet. Mrs. Alonzi resents that Canada Post ended delivery to her mailbox. Now she has to walk over a kilometre to pick up her mail at a box in front of the mosque.

The Alonzis also miss Teston United Church, demolished as the region expands a nearby road and developers expand Peace Village. "I was standing there and crying," Mrs. Alonzi says. "I said, 'God, are you not listening?' But nobody listened, and they tore it down." Their son built them a wooden model of the church, to keep the memory alive. She also bought a knotted rag rug from the church at auction, for $75.

The appeal of faith-based suburbs is simple: People feel more comfortable among their own kind. Maqbool Bajwa immigrated to Toronto from Pakistan in 1987 with his four brothers, his mother and father. Immigration Canada let in his father under the business investor category. The family's first home was in Toronto's troubled Jane-Finch area. In 1997, Maqbool Bajwa bought a house in Brampton in Toronto's western suburbs. A year later he sold it and bought in Peace Village. Family bought adjoining houses.

"The mosque was nearby, the street names were all from our community," he says, sitting in an office at MB Computer Depot, a new store his brothers started in an Ahmadiyyaowned plaza near Peace Village. "I love it. When I see Ahmadiyya Avenue, it makes me proud, no question about it. Plus we've got the Vaughan Mills [a new mall], we've got the Wonderland and hopefully the subway coming. I can wear my shalwar camise and walk from home to the mosque without someone looking at me funny for what I'm wearing. It just gives me the absolute comfort of being home."

I find it interesting to contemplate the gulf of perception between Western assumptions about Saddam Hussein's overthrow and the Islamic one. Certainly, many Iraqis hated Saddam's regime, but obviously huge numbers of people across the whole region saw Saddam's ouster as an attack on Islam (Hey man, he may be a ruthless oppressor, but he's OUR ruthless oppressor, bless his heart.).
Saddam may have been a bad guy, but he kept Iraq together using the whip. Now that he's gone, everyone in Iraq is using the whip, applying their own little Jihad, making their own small contribution to anarchy. Ain't it great?

supercargo - that story from Canada about the great big Muslim-only 'village' - i.e. COLONY, is terrifying.

Please, Canadian jihadwatchers, specially if you are Catholics - you have to send a full set of Mr Spencer's books, plus Bostom's 'Legacy of Jihad', plus Bat Yeor on 'The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam' and 'Islam and Dhimmitude'; plus Oriana Fallaci in Italian and English; plus an article from the Times a while ago about a Muslim cleric in Britain who told his co-religionists to feign peace while preparing for war [to take over the UK], to the Italian couple mentioned in the article - Mr and Mrs Alonzi, and to the priest at the Catholic church in the Catholic village of 'Vellore Woods' established opposite this so-called 'peace village' - God bless the Italians, fighting fire with fire!. The priest could also be given a copy of Mark Durie's book 'Revelation?'. Do a mailout to everyone in 'Vellore Woods', with the text of 'Islam 101' from this site. Send the local police chief a copy of 'Sword of the Prophet' and 'PIG to Islam and the Crusades', with a covering letter.

Anybody here know whether similar out-and-out colonies are happening elsewhere in the western world?

In November 2004 I postulated that the battlespace of Iraq would serve as an effective mujahadeen honeypot.

By vigorously planting the Stars and Stripes in the heart of the former capital of the defunct Islamic empire, American military planners were certain that the theater would attract mujahadeen from around the world. It is also logical to conclude that Syria would serve as a portal to the battlespace that is utterly owned by the US military.

dd army:

The group is Ahmadiyah Muslim, which is significant as members are murdered on a regular basis because they deny the Muslim concept of finality-of-prophethood. In the 'seventies, the parasitic government of Pakistan invited Wahabi "scholars" from the Saud terrorist entity to Pakistan, in order to issue fatwahs on Ahmadiyah practises. The result of same: the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was altered to designate Ahmadiyahs as a "non-Muslim minority." So that group seeks exclusion from both Salafist Muslims and their mortal enemy: kaffirun (disbelievers, of murder-cult dictate).

What happens to Muslim women? His father is opposed to the journey toward martyrdom but mom gives her blessing to suicide. I've been blaming the imams but what are mothers doing to their children in their formative years? Does this mother expect to be paid a bounty when her son is killed? Has Assad followed Saddam's example?
They say they crave death but if their goal in life is to kill infidels then why not choose captivity over death? The prisoner might live to fight (and kill) another day. A martyr can't kill any more infidels.

I don't want to know who the bombers are. I want an interview with the HANDLER.

And I'd also like to know a bit more about Mohammed Hafez, 'visiting professor at the University of Missouri' (what kind of Muslim is he? has anyone here read his book?) and Bruce Hoffmann of Georgetown.

Well I had to quit reading when I saw the bit about how Shock and Awe had forced him to react to become a jihadist.

As a military-historical reality, we never unleashed the actual Shock and Awe bombing campaign. Never. It was shelved according to circumstances, after the unscripted try at getting Saddam and his cronies at some restaurant or something. But the fact is we NEVER GOT IT OUT.

Where did he hear about it? From leftists in America? I can guarantee you that those are the only people on earth who whine about the shock and awe. It never happened.

But we still could do it if we wanted to, anywhere, anytime. The ignorance of people is astonishing.

This type of brainwashing is very effective as a weapon in a primitive environment. Don't underestimate it. The only problem is that it is part of a war culture that teaches self-sacrifice; but they are now blowing up their educated, well-trained, valuable members; the world has changed, but they haven't.

If we look at Islamic culture as a competitor with the other major cultures that are shaping the future of mankind (US, European, Chinese, Indian, Russian, etc), then it works in our favor to have them blow themselves up. They are destroying their own future.

Who the hell would want to live there, except muslims? Peace Village, indeed.

The article mistranslates some words:

"Sinners" should be infidels, and "God" should be "Allah".

I doubt we'll get anywhere if we keep up this charade of giving Islam a Christian face to it.

“Wahhabi tradition sees the ascendancy of Shia as [a] worse evil than occupation by infidels, because Shia are heretics and apostates,”

And therein lies the key to victory. Foment the hostility between the sects and let them destory each other.

Any chance of Washington, London, Berlin, Paris, Brussels etc. etc. etc. catching on to this? I didn't think so. Too busy winning hearts and minds.

Divide and conquer works. The Romans did it to my ancestors in Britain...
The Brits did it to my ancestors in Ireland...

Then comes the culture changes... but ONLY if those in power can control intellect and information.

On another note, please tell me this: Does the Koran say all women are destined to hell? If so, it's no small wonder why mothers urge their sons to suicide/homicide. With no afterlife for her, why should she hold any hope for herself or her daughters? How can she?

If Koran teaches that women all go to hell, it's no wonder then that reports I heard coming from witnesses of Islamic men in various Islamic countries DO teach and believe that "women are for breeding and men are for love..."
Of course, with the exception of Iran, where we are told by the thug in chief there are no gay people in his country...??? Lots of closets with lots of closets... layers and layers...
I reckon he and his fellow misogynist/satyrs simply have a different word for their male on male activities... perhaps he would define it as "brotherly love."????

So, go ahead and seek martyrdom. Over time, for the greater good of all humankind, this devil murder cult will become extinct.
And NO, Allah IS NOT Yaweh, Jehovah, Adonai! GET IT for crying out loud. Alah is NOT GOD!

He is a man with very low self worth. When I die I want to take two Daleks and no less than five Imperial Storm Troopers with me. In truth I would really like to destroy a Fleet Carrier or Star Destroyer, but I know my limitations.

Has for the fact that a supposedly intelligent Muslim decided to pot himself in a fruitless exercise that as had no effect on the war whatsoever? Well I’m happy because if the brainy people all kill themselves first then I will only have to deal with the stupid people. I like dealing with stupid people, it leaves time to do other things.
