Keystone Kops Alert. "Leak Severed a Link to Al-Qaeda's Secrets: Firm Says Administration's Handling of Video Ruined Its Spying Efforts," by Joby Warrick for the Washington Post (thanks to all who sent this in):
A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition. It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.
The founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network."Techniques that took years to develop are now ineffective and worthless," said Rita Katz, the firm's 44-year-old founder, who has garnered wide attention by publicizing statements and videos from extremist chat rooms and Web sites, while attracting controversy over the secrecy of SITE's methodology. Her firm provides intelligence about terrorist groups to a wide range of paying clients, including private firms and military and intelligence agencies from the United States and several other countries.
The precise source of the leak remains unknown. Government officials declined to be interviewed about the circumstances on the record, but they did not challenge Katz's version of events. They also said the incident had no effect on U.S. intelligence-gathering efforts and did not diminish the government's ability to anticipate attacks.

We need an investigation and criminal charges filed against the leaker. This operation was compromised; best come down hard and send a strong message so that future ones aren't.

Whenever I see the terms "US" and "intelligence" used in the same sentence, it always causes me some amusement.
Now I know why.

Infiltration at the highest levels? Would the US employ a Russian at the highest levels of the spy network? But they employ the enemy's brothers-in-faith.
Incompetence? Or infiltration?

I doubt that this was mere bungling and suspect that this company was compromised for political reasons.
Don't forget that CAIR has been given access to security procedures at airports like O'Hare, even though they are comprised of a cast of characters that would like to kill us all.
Given bush's own pronouncement on all religons reporting to the same diety -- there is no telling what he is capable of doing -- for example
http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=58033
Furthermore, I don't buy the overly simplistic arguement that this is nothing more than partisan politics -- bush is no longer an idiot in my book; he is a fruitcake and every bit as nutty as his iranian ape counterpart.
We live in the most dangerous time in history and we have deranged morons with nuclear weapons either at the helm, or circling about like buzzards waiting to swoop down and sieze office the first chance they get.
Like Texan used to say -- "lock and load!" the gates of Rome are comin down.

Thank you, Witness.
"lock and load" is not original with me, but the concept has my complete endorsement. The fact is that Americans are stockpiling ammunition by the millions and millions and millions of rounds.
Take a look at this: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=120315&t=11082005
Sold out. Out of stock. This is happening over and over and over. Hunting ammunition is plentiful, but cartridges in military rifle calibers are scarce. All in spite of the fact that there has been a tripling of the prices over the last two years or so.
But you can be certain that when there is the inevitable mixing of feces and fan, the gun-toting agencies of the federal government will be guarding the mosques in this country, and not the Americans.
Sad, sad, indeed. We surrendered to multiculturalism a long time ago. Now we are paying the price.

It is worth noting the spin being put on the articles by newspaper activist Joby Warrick in his report. It is not "government bureaucrats" or "jihadist sympathizers" or "activists" or "whistleblowers" or even "the government" which are claimed to have leaked the information. No, the 'reporter' claims that it is "the Bush administration", as if this were a matter of policy handed down from the president.
The leak was done by a person or persons unknown, who had his or her own agenda. We each may have our ideas of what the agenda might be.
Joby Warrick, of course, put his own spin on the situation which, as is normal for him, includes a barely subtle bashing of G.W. Bush. Had Mr. Warrick been a good reporter, he would've noted only that it was someone who probably was within whatever portions of the bureaucracy were involved. For us, when reading such an article, we would do well to separate the facts (i.e., what was leaked and that it was leaked) from the propaganda and opinions (i.e., who is implied to have leaked it).

1. I would think that this would be an easy leak to trace but then, again, there have been many such leaks and none of the leakers have been pursued or prosecuted.
2. If this isn't treason, I don't know what is.
2. Part of the fault here lies with the private intelligence company for its being so naive as to suppose that secret information they passed on to our colander government would stay secret for any length of time.

SITE should have held onto the info.
They leaked it.
To leakers.
The CIA should now take the cached al-Qaeda website, and set it back up on their own, pretending that it was "driven temporarily offline by the CIA", but is now back in action.
And see how many jihadis they can sucker.

As a general rule, I distrust 90% of what the Washington Post prints. This is the same periodical who defended Esam Omeish's calls for Jihad and called upon a known Stalinist to defend him, while reporting that "right-wing anti-Muslim bigots" were the ones condemning Esam Omeish's calls for Jihad. Yeah, THAT Washington Post...

My guess is that the leak was not accidental but deliberate and political. Some political hack figured they could make Bush look bad by blowing the cover on a snooping program that was yielding some success.
And it was the Democrats. Why? because they don't believe that Islam or terrorists like OBL are a real threat. A lot of Democrats think its all b.s. If in doubt go over to DailyKos.

In another article Iread a few hours ago, that qouted the owner of SITE, she stated that the message was leaked 20 minutes after she had notified the White House and released it to them. I dont have the article but I believe they were qouting a Ms Katz.
Regardless, my bad memory aside. That part I remembered, thinking thats some hyper speed leak. Not one that could have happened without the mans say so.

"Operation", "Intel", "Treason" ... give me a break.
Rita Katz at SITE "leaked" this information. She is in business to do just that. This was not a 'Secret Intelligence Operation'. This was not even Ms Katz' proprietary information. She was not the only person to "find" this video. She simply patrols jihad-websites, as do many many other people/organizations. She SELLS her web-findings and translations to the media. The media had access to the tape long before the Bush administration did, because she has long since given them direct access to her site.
Ms Katz had a hack into one Jihad server, the exploitation of which allowed HER to PROFIT from the information she gleaned from the terrorists. When the terrorists realized that SHE had hacked them, because SHE attempted to again profit through the open dissemination of this sensitive information, they made changes to their server to prevent HER further access. For such a self-described seasoned intel veteran, she sure wasn't very careful with the operational security of this asset. She burned herself.
Despite te media's protestations, this "source" has not "dried up". Al Qaeda is still posting online, and we're (we defined both as US Intelligence agencies and private individuals) are still listening and watching. Ms Katz might not be profiting anymore, but that's something entirely different that what the media is spinning.
She was certainly no super-secret agent of the US Intel community, seeing as how she lists governmental agencies as 'clients' and brags about the death threats she gets on her for-profit website. She surely outed herself by complaining to the Post, not very good trade-craft.
This isn't the first time Rita Katz has made allegations that the actions of others have hindered her access to jihad postings. Those allegations are founded on her belief that she somehow owns the rights to the information she finds online. She doesn't. There's a better case to be made that people with such poor opsec/intel-gathering skills have no business screwing around with real terror threats. Because if assets are truly being burned, SHE IS THE ONE BURNING THEM!
So why does she have a forum for her complaints now? There most certainly are motives at work here, the least of which have anything to do the security of Terrorism Intelligence. If there was any breach of security and unwanted disclosure of secrets, it was done by Rita Katz and the Washington Post. However, the Intel community will be hard-put to confirm nor deny anything, for to do so would require revealing Intelligence gathering methods. Which leaves a perfect opportunity to attack the Bush Administration, even though Joby Warrick buries the caveat that 'we don't know where the leak came from'.

Well, thank you, Bar.
Nice to know someone IS paying attention.
It's also one major reason the FISA issue that WAS being raised as an "impeach!" movement just months ago is now *ahem* supported TODAY by the very same folks who tried to make an issue of this "leak" misnomer in the first place.
Yes, the intel "bureaucracy" doesn't like being shown up (though because of some laws they cannot act on things they see, no matter how blatantly actionable otherwise)...
No, our intel is the best in the world (it's the knuckle-dragging by the collaborators in elected office, doing study after study after study to see if it's feasible to act on the intel 3 months out, that makes the intel old & worthless, yet they blame the intel people for the same thing they themselves caused by knuckle-dragging in the first damned place to begin with!) Intel just takes it on the chin because they're not at liberty to call a spade a spade, like the collaborators desperately deserve.
So we've had to rely on such sources as OSINT (look it up) to ge things done despite the interference of the islamicommie collaborators who should even BE in their elected offices in the first place.
The bottom line now is, the FISA issue is no longer disputable, no longer an effective issue by the militant collaborators (who are wearing a LOT of egg on their faces over that conspiracy BS), and is now suddenly being supported, even by those same would-be "Impeach!"ers to save what little face (and credibility) they have left.
;-)
