US embassy targeted by Azerbaijan Methodists -- no, wait...

...it was "a radical Islamic group." Oh, will the Islamophobia never end?

"US embassy targeted by Azerbaijan terror," by Aida Sultanova for Associated Press:

BAKU, Azerbaijan - The U.S. and British embassies suspended operations Monday in Baku, where the government said it thwarted a radical Islamic group's plot to conduct a "large-scale horrifying terror attack" against diplomatic missions and government buildings.

The Azerbaijani National Security Ministry said one suspect was killed and several others were detained in a weekend sweep in village outside the capital. The ministry said the Islamic group included an army lieutenant who stole 20 hand grenades, a machine gun, four assault rifles and ammunition from his military unit and made them available for the planned attack.

The British Embassy in Baku temporarily closed Monday, and the U.S. Embassy sent out an announcement to American citizens saying it had closed its consular office for an indefinite period because of a security threat. No specifics were given.

National Security Ministry spokesman Arif Babayev told The Associated Press that the radical Islamic group had planned to launch a "terror attack against several government structures in Baku and the U.S. Embassy."

"...large-scale horrifying terror attack..."

Shouldn't that be a large scale horrifying PEACE attack? After all, this is a religion of peace, is it not?

If Islamania really is a religion of peace then I will root for neverending war. The world can't handle the sort of "peace" the Destroyers seek to bring to it.

With "peace" lovers like those, who needs a war?
lol

The really sad thing is that Azerbaijan used to be the most secular of all of USSR's historically muslim republics with a very modern and liberated women and one of the lowest instances of antisemitism.

Mimi,
The USSR kept a tight lid on religion.

How long did it take for political Islam to assert itself once the USSR broke up? What has the two-decade-long struggle for Nagorno-Karabakh done to Azerbaijan? The US was in consultation with Azeri officals earlier this year. Is this bombing attempt at all related to the conflict with Armenia?

Nonie Darwish (bless her heart!) might infer that a "large population of sexually deprived, unmarried young Muslim men" (too poor to attract a bride) "angrily listen to calls for jihad in their mosques." These young men with no families make up a large part of the radical Islamic group who targeted the US Embassy in Azerbaijan - and all jihads. After all, if 72 virgins await them upon death, what have they to lose?

By contrast to the item under discussion, I would like to contribute a small piece of GOOD news from Azerbaijan. There IS an Azeri-speaking church, not a relic of the Russian empire period, but instead a new church, composed of people who are coming out of Islam, and it is growing.

I quote, from a reputable source which I will not specify here, the story of a woman who is currently working on a translation of the Gospels into modern Azeri. Both she and her husband were what one might call slack Muslims (her husband had a drinking problem!); but then first her husband, then she herself, became Christians. “When my husband began his ministry..., there were only three people. Now our church, the Baptist Church, has more than 700 members [most of them converts from Islam, by the way] and is
very active. But it has not all been plain sailing. In 1999 my
husband was arrested during a church service and was impris-
oned for 15 days. God used him during that time, and several prisoners and policemen became Christians. They are still following Jesus today. Again, in 2001, he had more problems and was forbidden to preach. But he is preaching again now and the church is continuing its work, thank the Lord!

Two striking items from this woman's account of her conversion were that it was triggered first, by a dramatic change in her husband's character after he became a Christian - he became "a changed man. He was kind to me and the children and he stopped drinking and taking drugs. He started talking to me about the love of God, and about the Bible". Secondly, when her father died she was very upset because she had no certainty her father was in paradise (a typically Muslim fear). Her husband assured her that her father was in heaven (he had, in fact, identified as a Christian before death); she said, " I would only believe that, if I saw my father in a dream and he told me he was in heaven". The dream took place, and she was convinced.

Rationalists and sceptics are free to jeer at stories like this - but this woman exists, and many hundreds - perhaps even thousands - like her. They will be the first victims if Azerbaijan goes down the road of jihad and sharia law.

...I have no doubt he did not do this alone....apparently they have loose controls over their weapons and even looser security in guarding their own weapons....probably their armed forces are filled with sympathizers and not so loyal troops....

....yep...
