Narseal Batiste says he was just playing along, and that the FBI informant cajoled him into pretending to be a jihadist. "Fla. Terror Suspect: Jihad Talk Was Fake," by Curt Anderson for Associated Press (thanks to Twostellas):
MIAMI (AP) - A man accused of leading a terrorist cell testified Wednesday that he was putting on an act to get money when he spoke approvingly of Islamic extremism and was never serious about plotting violent attacks.Narseal Batiste told jurors at his trial that comments he made on FBI videotapes about violent Islamic jihad and a ``full ground war'' against the U.S. government were part of the show that a convenience store operator named Abbas al Saidi was urging him to stage.
Al Saidi bragged of family terrorist connections in his native Yemen but was actually an FBI informant. At meetings in 2005, Batiste said al Saidi promised him $10,000 and access to much more if Batiste would play the extremist role for a purported al-Qaida emissary who would soon arrive.
``I wanted the money and support,'' Batiste said. ``That's the only reason I was there.''
That emissary, known to Batiste and his men as ``Brother Mohammed,'' was also an FBI informant named Elie Assad who previously said he was acting out a part as well.
``I understood that if I didn't play the role Abbas was asking me to play, I wouldn't get the money I was looking for,'' Batiste testified under questioning by his attorney, Ana M. Jhones.

AL2000,
Where are you?
Answer me and we can discuss your islamic nonsense in greater detail.
I want to answer your "arguments", but I want to do it where ALL can read it so it is not buried on the bottom of a page that is very old.
I look forward to thrashing you more Mr. Peaceful Religion.

How convenient. What worries me is that all they have to do is to stack the jury with jihadist sympathizers and this guy could walk. This guy ought to hang, IMHO. We need to send a strong, undeniably clear message that we, as a nation, will not tolerate this cr@p!

Is this the "everyone else is scoring derivative petrodollars, so why not me" defence ?
Shouldn't Jimmy Peanut be sitting next to him ? In the docket ?
Jihad for dollars. Has a ring to it.
Turn him over, he's done.

Maybe this guy was telling the truth; give him the benefit of reasonable doubt. Of course he'd still belong in jail for fraud, if not conspiracy to murder.
But if he's a genuine jihadist he really ought to change his last name, which is the French word for "baptist".

Reality check:

What if his story is true and this is another example of the FBI with no clue.
Do they really have the ability to vet the guys they use in these scenarios above and beyond the political correctness and "peaceful loyal American Muslims" pipe dream?
Don't get me wrong, I have great respect for our top cops, I just worry they have been indoctrinated beyond the saturation point.
I hope they hang him.
