Misunderstanders of Islam can even be imams, and they're rather thick on the ground these days. Memo to Ibrahim Hooper and Salam Al-Marayati: the peacefulness of your religion, which you so loudly insist upon in the West, seems to be awfully hard for some of your coreligionists to grasp. What say you call for the international institution of programs in mosques and Islamic schools teaching against the jihad ideology of Islamic supremacism?
"Former imam convicted in France for Chechnya-related terrorist plot," from AP (thanks to Twostellas):
PARIS (AP) - A French appeals court sentenced a former imam Monday to five years in prison for involvement in a plot to stage attacks in France to support fighters in Chechnya. The Paris Court of Appeals stiffened Chelalli Benchellali's original 18-month suspended sentence, imposing instead a five-year prison term, and ordered him to return from Algeria to serve his time in France.
Benchellali, his wife and two sons were among 25 people convicted in June 2006 in the plot, apparently aimed at calling greater global attention to the cause of Muslim Chechen rebels fighting the Russian government.
Their family was considered by prosecutors to be at the center of the plan, under which some members of the group traveled to a base for Chechen fighters to learn about explosives and chemical agents.
The prosecution contended the group was plotting an attack in Paris, but could not identify the target. The Russian Embassy, a police station and the Eiffel Tower were mentioned during investigators' interrogations.
Benchellali, an imam at a makeshift mosque in Venissieux, outside Lyon, was expelled from France to his native Algeria after receiving his original suspended sentence.
Prosecutors had appealed because they considered Benchellali's sentence too light.
In Monday's ruling, the court upheld Benchellali's conviction for criminal association with a terrorist enterprise, and sentenced him to five years. [...]
The network was dismantled in two waves, in December 2002 when investigators stormed two houses in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve and the nearby town of Romainville. They found gas canisters, fuses, chemicals and a suit to protect against chemical attacks. In January 2004, police made a second wave of arrests in Benchellali's town of Venissieux, and found chemical products, including ricin.

"Misunderstanders of Islam can even be imams..."
-- from Robert Spencer's comment above
Even ayatollahs and sheiks al-azhar can be misundertanders of Islam. Yes, so many Muslims all over the world, from southern Thailand to southern Sudan to southern France to southern Michigan, can be misunderstanders of Islam. And the madrasas and seminaries are apparently having great difficulty clearing those little misunderstandings up.

Greetings:
"The Paris Court of Appeals stiffened Chelalli Benchellali's original 18-month suspended sentence, imposing instead a five-year prison term, and ordered him to return from Algeria to serve his time in France."
And the odds of him returning would be exactly what.

Yeah, Benchalli will be right over. I can just see him running to the airport like O.J. Simpson
to grab his plane ticket to France.
Had they sent him to Devil's Island (which needs to be dusted off in times like these) in the first place this all would have been over with.

Great idea. Instead of the UK's expensive "Islam Is Peace" campaign telling us how peaceful Muslims are, why don't they instead spend the money on educating themselves about peace?
They would need a snappy title for the campaign, though. How about: "Islam Learns Peace"?

Deeply learned theologian of Shi'a Islam he may have been, but even the Ayatollah Khomeini, judging by the quotation below, was a Misunderstander of Islam:
"Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled or incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. . . . But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world. . . . Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them, put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]…. Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for the Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Qur'anic] psalms and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all this mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim."

The misunderstanding goes all the way back to Mohammed; he thought he was hearing the words of God. But it was all "Satanic Verses", and Mo didn't know it. Poor Mo, he didn't even catch on when he heard the supposed creator of the world give him instructions on how people were to clean up after relieving themselves. Satan must have had trouble keeping a straight face when he delivered those verses.

Hugh, thank you for this clear and honest reminder.
The more I read, the sorrier I am that such intelligent people like you and Mr. Spencer have had to waste your precious time warning us about these monsters and studying their behaviour like so many mountain gorillas.
I know it sounds inhumane and cruel, but how do we stop aid to muslim country's to let them taste the full effect of their beliefs? (Bangladesh, etc.)
How do we secretly side-drill their oil?

"I know it sounds inhumane and cruel, but how do we stop aid to muslim country's to let them taste the full effect of their beliefs?"
Simple, 'tiger...
get the eco-gestapo out of the way here in the US, allow drilling our own (especially the new fields & oil sands HERE, known to be HUGE and even easier to remove than Canada's), the price plummets like a meteor within the next year, crashes their income, we tell OPEC to F.O.A.D., leaving them all to their own devices (let china buy their oil, while we build our military to match their buildup for the obvious main event they're planning)
Bing-bang-done.
And that's just the oil sector...

Holy cow this guy is an Islamophobe. Isn't that what Islamophobes do -- conflate murderous supremacism with a wholly peaceful religion?
We have nothing to be Islamophobic about but Islamophobia itself.

LOL. Remember that Saudi shiek boasting how Islam has something like 40 plus rules on how to relieve yourself?

Let's start calling "the war on terror", "the war on misunderstanders." Evidently this is a more accurate discription of what we're up against, and maybe we can even get Ibrahim Hooper and Salam Al-Marayati on board to help in the fight.
I would think that Mr. Hooper and Al-Marayati would would jump at the chance to combat those who are defaming Islam.

Spreading untruths is an activity taught by the Kuran: it's called "taqiyya."
The imam in question understands Islam just fine.
If only the US government did.

jcom972:
Driling for oil in America is at best a temporary solution to our nation's problem of dependence upon fossil fuel reserves in places like the Middle East, Iran, Venzeula, or Russia.
Our nation's main petroleum reserves have been largely though not entirely DEPLETED. That is why places like Houston are rotting away economically; when the oil wells went dry there was nothing else to keep people there.
The long-term answer to America's need for energy is to develop needed technologies that provide alternatives to fossil fuels.
America really has noithing to lose by developing alternatives to fossil fuel consumption. There's a goodly number of people in America who have ALREADY developed solar and other energy sources for their own use and pay no heating bills to their city: they provide their own energy and have no middleman ripping them off blind (I'll bet they save plenty of money too).
And, by the way if Americans don't develop economically and technologically VIABLE alternatives to fossil fuel sources some other nations almost certainly will and the United States will fall even further and faster behind the curve of the cutting edge of technological development than it already has (which is plenty far and much too fast).
Dependence on anything is never a long-term solution. I would never prescribe it myself.

They were right on the money unfortunately. If they were to carry out the attacks, the establishment would bend over backwards to appease them. It worked so many times before, it'd work again.

Let's hope that while he is in prison he gets some of that "special loving" we hear so much about. With any luck he'll come out with an arsehole like a wizards cuff.
