Motivated by a desire to "promote terrorism."
"11 years for refusing to testify to grand jury in Hamas funding case," from The Associated Press (thanks to all who sent this in):
CHICAGO: A former professor accused of taking part in a Palestinian terrorist network was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison Wednesday for refusing to testify before a U.S. grand jury.Abdelhaleem Ashqar, 49, a former associate professor of business at Washington's Howard University, was taken into custody by federal marshals immediately after the sentencing, during which prosecutors warned that he might flee.
Ashqar was convicted earlier this year of criminal contempt and obstruction of justice for refusing to testify in 2003 before a grand jury investigating the Palestinian militant movement Hamas.
He and co-defendant Muhammad Salah were acquitted of taking part in a racketeering conspiracy aimed at bankrolling Hamas in its violent attacks on the government of Israel. But prosecutors presented telephone records showing that Ashqar was in contact with Hamas leaders.
The judge found that Ashqar's refusal to testify was motivated by a desire to "promote terrorism." That toughened the federal sentencing guidelines and guaranteed that he would get a stiff sentence.

A fitting new university for the professor, where he can feel right at home with his hatred and his psychopathy (islam ?).
Can he then be deported ? Surely there is another hole for him somewhere in Gazastan ?

Glad to see my neighbor Salah will finally stop his gloating about his innocence and the evil Israelis who 'tortured' him into a confession. I'm sure the local media will once again ramp up the televised shots of weeping women and children in despair over losing their poor, persecuted husband/father.

dm60462, there's no contradiction between Salah being a Hamas support and him being tortured by the GSS. They use torture routinely. I was present when they took a five years old boy as hostage, demanding his brother - who murdered an IDF soldier who surrendered his weapon - give himself up. It worked. I daresay it was also counterproductive.

A zero sadly missing from the 11 year sentence

Ashqar is made to look as a hero and martyr by CAIR.
What about the civil rights of Israelis in the land of their ancestors, in which most were born? There have always been indigenous Jews as part of the population there, and many others expelled from Arab lands.
Ashqar is a despicable agent of hate.

I'm happy to see a "promoter of terrorism" and preacher of hate brought to justice.Hopefully he will be deported to his beloved "Palestine" after completing his sentence. Is it still the case that there is no parole in the federal prison system?

The prison officials should keep him away from other muslims, and assign 'Bubba', as his cell mate. After 11 years of playing 'leap frog', and 'bear hug' with Bubba, he will be a changed man...

It is a good thing the case was decided by a judge and not by cowardly Chicago jurors who would let the jihadist walk.
