Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack after a rally in the city of Rawalpindi on Thursday, her party said.“She has been martyred,” said party official Rehman Malik. Bhutto, 54, died in hospital in Rawalpindi. Ary-One Television said she had been shot in the head.
Police said a suicide bomber fired shots at Bhutto as she was leaving the rally venue in a park before blowing himself up.
“The man first fired at Bhutto’s vehicle. She ducked and then he blew himself up,” said police officer Mohammad Shahid.

"The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred," Bhutto's lawyer Babar Awan said.A party security adviser said Bhutto was shot in neck and chest as she got into her vehicle to leave the rally in Rawalpindi near the capital Islamabad. A gunman then blew himself up.
"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.
Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf. Some smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.

Right on the heels of the agreement between Musharraf and Karzai to go after the Taliban's hidey-holes.
Once the Taliban determines a target, it focuses on that target. Remember AQ's persistence to take down the Twin Towers? 1993's failed attack, followed by 2001's attack.
The Religion of Peace continues it centuries-old tradition of murder and assassination.
This is a bad end to 2007. Batten down the hatches for 2008.

But she was a better option that whoever is set to emerge from the American-funded IIS, the dark person who will behead Musharaf and then move to attack American soldiers and marines in Afghanistan using American-made and American-funded weapons.

It all depends which side one is on. The bomber's gang will call him the "martyr". The rational Western mind cannot understand that both she and the bomber are martyrs. But the Islamic mind is schooled in the Koran, where the Almighty contradicts himself and calls it abrogation, and so both will be called martyrs.

Sorry to be so cynical, but I can't believe it took so long. Besides the tragedy of her death, this will have the far greater and very much intended effect of freezing out any pro-democracy (read: non-Islamic) reformers in Pakistan or anywhere in Islamdom.

What was the money used for? Explosives, bullets, incentives to assassins willing to publicly execute the political opposition and then murder many of his own countrymen? Stop Pakistani immigration to the U.S. now! We don't need any more jihadists driving cabs, attending our universities, or bringing their families here to grow Islamic fundamentalism on our soil. This exposes Pakistan in all its glory. A failed state, which back in 1954 was on a par with Taiwan. Look where we are 54 years on. Taiwan is a wealthy and progressive Westernised country, whilst Pakistan is a semiliterate Islamic craphole with open sewers, a 30% literacy rate, overrun with savages who'll do this sort of thing with no regrets - and much more worryingly - armed with nukes. And why? You've guessed: Islam! Those who can plan and do this sort of thing to Benazir Bhutto wouldn't baulk at eliminating 7 million Londoners, 17 million New Yorkers, or Calcutta's 18 million residents if they had the chance. The destruction of the indigenous Indian Hindu culture by the Arab-Persian-Muslim invader-killers has reached out over the centuries in this matter as many of the descendants of those conquered by the Muslims bow to the gas station. The whole place would be better off today if it were all Hindu.
What is the difference between what the "Christian" pig Pizarro did in Peru and what the Muslim pigs did/do in India (including Pakistan/Bangladesh)? One difference is that the Muslims find "moral authority" in the Quran for what they did in India, while Pizarro had to ignore the teachings of Christ in his Muslim-style behavior. But the behavior in each case was the same.
In either case we see "religion" used as a rationalization for imperialism-domination. The Imperial-isms based on "religion"-ideology are lethal and sneer at indigenous cultures with their "moral authority" for dominance. The truth is that British style commercial imperialism is far preferable to the Spanish or Muslim style "religious" covers for imperialism. Islam began as the engine of Arab imperialism and it will end as that.

Rudy Guiliani's campaign has already issued a press statement about her death and said something to the effect that Pakistan must return to the rule of law and democracy. So why do US/Western leaders go on about the rule of law and democracy knowing full well that a one-person vote in these Islamist countries means the only rule of law is Sharia and radical Islam? Let's be honest with the American citizenry that either refuses to or cares not to read up on Islam, world history, etc and explain that we do NOT want democratic elections in countries in which Isalm is the dominant force; "religious" and political.

Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi,Pakistan on June 21, 1953. She attended the Lady Jennings Nursery School and then the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Karachi. After two years of schooling at the Rawalpindi Presentation Convent, she was sent to the Jesus and Mary Convent at Murree.
After completing her early education in Pakistan, she pursued her higher education in the United States. From 1969 to 1973 she attended Radcliffe College, and then Harvard University, where she obtained a B.A. degree cum laude in comparative government She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
The next phase of her education took place in the United Kingdom. Between 1973 and 1977 Bhutto studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She completed a course in International Law and Diplomacy while at Oxford. In December 1976 she was elected president of the Oxford Union, becoming the first Asian woman to head the prestigious debating society.
On 16 November 1988, in the first open election in more than a decade, Benazir's PPP won the largest bloc of seats in the National Assembly. Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of a coalition government on 2 December, becoming at age 35 the youngest person — and the first woman — to head the government of a Muslim-majority state in modern times. That same year, People Magazine included Ms. Bhutto in its list of The Fifty Most Beautiful People. In 1989, she was awarded the Prize For Freedom by the Liberal International.
Bhutto's government was dismissed in 1990 following charges of corruption, for which she never was tried. Zia's protégé Nawaz Sharif subsequently came to power. I've been dreading this ever since her return. Not, of course, that it took much presience, since jihadists have been trying to murder her ever since her return to Pakistan.
It is hard to know what the truth is about corruption charges against her--both rampant fiscal corruption and false charges of same are rife in thrid-world countries--yet there is no doubt that Pakistan was better off under her prime minisrty than any other in recent memory.
That being said, I never thought there was any real hope of her making any sort of positive difference by returning to Pakistan. There is a tiny proto-democracy movement, consisting of parts of the tiny middle-class and the judiciary, which stand against Musharraf's authoritarian policies.
But this group is completely dwarfed by Pakistan's other "opposition group"--hardline Islamists. The Islamists of the Red Mosque, the Islamists fueling the Taliban's resurgence, and the Islamists who murdered Ms. Bhutto.
Where does Musharraf stand in all this? Did he ever intend to ally with Bhutto? Is he serious about the "war on terror"? My guess is that he is like most dictators, playing one faction off against another, mostly in an effort to remain in power and keep the foriegn aid coming in.
It may all be a moot point soon. I hope we don't see an Iranian style "Islamic Republic" on India's doorstep in the near future, but I fear that this is what Pakistan is tending toward.
The brutal murder of Benazir Bhutto, a relatively modrate, rational leader, is a major step in that direction.

I feel this will result in civil war with the "radical islamists" aided by the Taliban/Al Qaeda and funded by Iran. And since muslim fighters (fueled by the promise of 72 virgins)tend to fight harder than democratic fighters (fueld by wanting to live long enough to grow old), the islamists will win. Just look at the "great battle" Hamas and Fatah fought over Gaza, that lasted what? 20 minutes or so?
Then we will be faced with an islamist regime having nukes, and we won't have to wait 5 - 10 years for Iran to develop them. They will either immediatley launch missles into India over the kashmir issue and/or sell some to Iran to launch into Israel.
Either way, bad start for 2008.

This response is a needed gentle correction. To its credit, Christanity has AWAYS been very respectful of the God-given dignity and rights of women. Also to its credit has AWAYS been for the freedom of slaves, and it played a very big role in the movement towards the ending of slavery in both the USA and in the UK. Christianity is AWAYS credited with promoting democracy and free governments not only in the USA, but elsewhere in the world. Also the CHRISTIAN FAITH IS THE TRUE FASTEST GROWING FAITH in the world today because of the HOPE it offers.
For your futher correction, none of the assasians you mentioned where NEVER Christians to begin with. They were non-believing atheists or pagans. Even when there is a murder of abortion provider(s), there is AWAYS, aways, condemmnation of the violent act by Christian leaders, goes to show that Christianity HAS NOTHING TO DO with violence, period. When Christians do awful deeds (like assassinations), they do so in spite of their religion, not because of it. When Muslims do awful deeds, it is very often because of their religion, not in spite of it. The difference could not be bigger and, sorry to say, you're clueless here. Besides, blaming Christiantity in any way just because Hitler (ditto for Oswald and the others you mentioned) was baptized Christian as an infant is absurd. Hitler had an utter contempt for Christianity, apparently something you did not know.
On another matter and related to the Bhutto assassination, I heard an ex-CIA agent on the news comment that the American military has contingency plans to move in and secure the nuclear sites in Pakistan in a worst case, melt-down scenario. Anyone know anything more about this?

Yes, it is very common in the subcontinent (India, Pakistan & Bangladesh) for people to send their children to Christian convent schools which provide, on the whole, excellent education. BTW, Benazir, despite all her convent education and her sugary Westernized talk, was as jehadist as any of the people who ultimately killed her as was her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who was the true father of the Islamic bomb.

I am not questioning your comment. Could you provide links to the two assertions (she was a jehadist & father was involved with the A-bomb).
This all (if true) fits the idea that Pakistan has been playing the west like a fiddle. There were reports earlier this year on how Musharraf had failed to go in and finish the Taliban when he could have and other instances that seem suspicious at best.
Just more evidence that "taq'ia" (lieing) is the standard practice when dealing with Islamic nations.

Then you mention Hitler, was an occultist and neo-pagan who rejected Christianity and ordered the murders of countless Christians along with the Jewish population he sought to eliminate. In contrast to Hitler's pagan racism, you should look at the real Christians who were killed by him. People like Maximillian Kolbe and Dietrich Bonhoffer. Look at the facts, while Christians opposed Hitler, he was supported and aided by Muslim leaders like the Mufti of Jerusalem.
So unlike these four, all of whom rejected Christianity, look at all the Muslims who committed mass-murders precisely because of Islam. This list is almost endless.

I laugh when I keep hearing about the corruption in other countries. 10 Billion spent on Pakistan and almost half of in unaccounted for etc. etc.
We can't even account for our spending on the Iraq war. We spend billion after billion per month and our troops don't even have the right vests.
After Katrina hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent and the people are living in little travel trailers still.
I think if 50 percent of what we spent has actually been used correctly over there that they are less corrupt than we are..
We have bridges collapsing because no one in our government wants to spend money to repair them, instead they want new bridges that bear their name..
No wonder America is not respected in the world. We want them to decry corruption and in reality we are must bigger offenders..
A trillion dollars are going to be spent on Iraq and we can not even provide our soldiers with the best equipment to protect themselves?
50 percent corruption in this country would be called good government....
